There is no one best Baldur’s Gate 3 preset for every platform. On PC, tune for your hardware and test DirectX 11 against Vulkan if performance or stability is poor. On Steam Deck, start with the Native build and its current defaults; Larian’s older general troubleshooting advice recommends FSR 1.0 Balanced, while the Native build changed to FSR 2.2 in Hotfix #35. On PS5 Pro, Quality prioritizes native 4K at 30 fps and Performance targets 60 fps with upscaled 4K output. The official material cited here does not establish current resolution or frame-rate targets for base PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
How to choose settings for your platform
Start with the settings your platform actually exposes. PC players can adjust graphics and renderer options; Steam Deck players can choose between upscaling options and Native or Proton builds; consoles use platform modes rather than the PC graphics menu. Lower resolution or graphics quality only when you need to diagnose a performance problem, not because one preset is best for everyone.
Best settings for Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC
PC performance depends on the graphics card, processor, resolution, and frame-rate target. Larian’s guidance is a troubleshooting method, not a universal preset or a claim that one renderer is always faster.
If performance or stability is poor
- Test DirectX 11 and Vulkan separately. Keep the option that behaves better on your computer; Larian does not identify a universally superior choice.
- Lower the resolution or graphics settings and check whether performance improves. Change settings systematically so you can identify what helped.
- If your monitor refresh rate is above 60 Hz and the setup is causing graphical issues, try capping the game at 60 fps.
- If your PC has both integrated and discrete graphics, check that Baldur’s Gate 3 is using the discrete GPU.
Larian’s 2023 launch-era announcement offered 1440p at 60 fps on a system with a good CPU and GeForce 3060 as an example, and said native 4K called for a top-end GeForce 4080/4090 or AMD equivalent; it also noted that DLSS can reduce requirements. Those dated examples are not current buying thresholds or a guarantee for every scene or configuration.

Best Steam Deck settings
Start with the Steam Deck Native build and keep SteamOS current. Larian says the Native build uses less CPU processing and memory than running through Proton, with more stable frame rates, shorter loading times, and smoother gameplay as intended benefits. These are developer-described benefits, not a fixed frame-rate guarantee; performance can still vary by area and update.
Recommended starting point
- Use Baldur’s Gate 3’s Official Layout for the gamepad controls.
- Set the aspect ratio to 16:9 and display mode to fullscreen.
- Begin with the medium video defaults.
- If performance is troublesome, Larian’s general Steam Deck FAQ recommends FSR 1.0 Balanced. The Native build’s later default is different, as explained below.
FSR 1.0 or FSR 2.2?
Larian’s general Steam Deck FAQ recommends FSR 1.0 Balanced as a performance troubleshooting option. Its Native-build FAQ says FSR 2.2 can produce a sharper image than FSR 1, at some performance cost. Then, on November 20, 2025, Hotfix #35 changed the Native build’s default upscaling type from FSR 1 to FSR 2.2. These recommendations describe different points in the game’s update history: FSR 1.0 Balanced remains an option to try when seeking performance, while FSR 2.2 is the newer Native-build default and favors sharpness.

When to try Proton instead
If the Native build causes a problem, Larian documents reverting to Proton version 8 or higher. Save locations differ between Native and Proton; with Steam Cloud enabled, the most recent saves sync automatically when switching to Native. Treat this as a compatibility workaround rather than a routine performance tweak.
Installing to a microSD card
For a Deck installation on removable storage, Larian’s support FAQ recommends a 256GB card with high read/write speeds (UHS-I to UHS-III). This is storage guidance, not evidence that a card increases frame rate.

PS5 and PS5 Pro modes
The published mode figures below are for PS5 Pro only. In a November 2024 announcement, Larian specified Quality at native 2160p (4K) and 30 fps, and Performance at 60 fps with output upscaled from 1440p to 2160p using PSSR. Split-screen on Pro offers 30 or 60 fps according to the selected Quality or Performance mode. Because these figures come from a 2024 announcement, they should not be assumed unchanged after later updates. They do not describe base PS5.

Larian has also published console troubleshooting advice for particular symptoms. For reported controller radial-wheel lag on PS5, its September 2025 workaround recommends turning off Performance Mode and VRR. A later update to Hotfix #34 said turning off Performance Mode may temporarily address occasional freezing; Hotfix #35, dated November 20, 2025, listed a fix for a PS5 freeze triggered by L2. These are issue-specific notes, not a general recommendation to disable Performance Mode.

Xbox Series X and Series S settings
The official material cited here confirms Xbox fixes but does not give current Series X versus Series S resolution or frame-rate targets, or a model-specific graphics preset. Do not apply PS5 Pro figures to Xbox. Use the mode and display options shown in your own game and console menus, but the available official information does not establish which Xbox mode is best or what performance target either model achieves.
