If you want music to keep playing with your phone screen off, YouTube Music Premium is the clearest officially supported choice. It enables background play for music on mobile. But no setup described in YouTube’s help documentation guarantees that an unattended YouTube video or livestream will play all night: autoplay can pause for a “Continue watching?” prompt, while the sleep timer deliberately stops playback.
Choose the setup that matches what you want overnight
- Music with your phone screen off: YouTube Music Premium supports background play for music on mobile. Benefits and availability can vary by location, account, device, and app version. YouTube Music Help: Explore Premium benefits
- A video that stops after you fall asleep: Set YouTube’s sleep timer to pause playback after your chosen duration. It is a scheduled cutoff, not a way to keep playback going all night. YouTube Help: Set a sleep timer
- Autoplay left running unattended: YouTube may interrupt it with a “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt. Do not rely on autoplay as a guaranteed overnight playback method.
- YouTube Music through a speaker: A Google Cast-compatible speaker is an option. Google documents YouTube Music casting continuing after you exit Chrome, close the web app, or turn off the computer; that documentation does not establish the same behavior for every YouTube video or livestream. What happens when YouTube autoplay runs unattended
With autoplay on, YouTube says the “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt may appear before these intervals of uninterrupted watching:

These are YouTube’s stated intervals, not reliability measurements or a promise that playback will continue until the prompt appears. An unattended device may therefore stop advancing through autoplay content before morning. YouTube Help: Why YouTube asks, “Continue watching?”
Set up screen-off music on a phone
- Open YouTube Music and sign in to the account with an active YouTube Music Premium membership. Premium is the officially supported route for listening to music while using other apps or with the screen off.
- Start the music you want to hear. Turn off the display or switch to another app; background play is intended to let music continue in either situation.
- If playback stops, check that the membership is active and available in your location, confirm background play is enabled in the app’s settings, check the network connection, and make sure another app is not taking over audio playback. YouTube also recommends these checks for background-play problems in the YouTube app. YouTube Help: Background play isn’t working on Android
YouTube Music describes the benefit this way: “With a YouTube Music Premium membership, you can listen to music and podcasts uninterrupted while using other apps or when your screen is off.” Podcasts may still contain ads, and feature availability can vary by location.

Use a sleep timer when playback should stop
If you want audio or video only until bedtime, use YouTube’s sleep timer and select the duration. The timer automatically pauses the video when that time has elapsed. Its purpose is to stop playback, so it is not suitable when the goal is music all night. See YouTube’s sleep timer instructions for the current controls.
Cast YouTube Music to a speaker
YouTube Music supports casting to compatible speakers. Google says casting music can continue after you close the web app, exit Chrome, or turn off the computer. Confirm that the speaker supports Google Cast and that YouTube Music is playing through the cast connection. This guidance is specific to YouTube Music; it does not promise that a YouTube livestream or every browser-based playback setup will remain active overnight.
