There is no single “best” semiconductor ETF for reducing memory-chip risk. Among the four products compared here, XSD offers the largest cited holding count, SOXX is a broad established basket, SMH is a more concentrated large-company fund with documented Micron exposure, and PSI uses a factor-based selection process. The right choice depends on the ETF’s current memory-stock weights, overlap with your other investments, geographic mix, fees and your tolerance for semiconductor cycles.
These funds are not memory-only products. They generally own chip designers, manufacturers, equipment suppliers and other semiconductor businesses, so buying one still leaves you with substantial sector and industry risk.
What a semiconductor ETF can—and cannot—diversify
A semiconductor ETF pools shares of companies involved in producing or enabling semiconductors. Depending on its index, that can include integrated-device manufacturers, fabless designers, foundries, memory producers, equipment makers and specialist suppliers. The basket spreads company-specific risk, but it does not remove the risk of owning the semiconductor industry.
Memory chips are particularly cyclical. Pricing, inventory corrections, capital-spending changes and demand for servers, PCs and mobile devices can affect several memory companies at the same time. A fund that owns many non-memory businesses may therefore behave differently from a memory-focused portfolio, but its actual protection depends on current weights rather than the fund name.

Memory exposure also appears indirectly. An equipment company may depend heavily on memory-fabrication spending, while a diversified chip designer may be driven by different end markets. Counting only companies whose names contain “memory” will miss those economic links. Use the ETF’s latest holdings file, index rules and geographic exposure together.
At-a-glance comparison
The figures below come from the cited issuer documents. Holding counts are shown with their document dates; weights change as prices move and portfolios are rebalanced.
| ETF | Index or selection approach | Cited holdings | Expense figure | Construction relevant to memory risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XSD | S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index | 44 holdings, State Street factsheet dated March 31, 2026 | 0.35% gross expense ratio, same factsheet | Largest cited holding count of the four; equal or modified weighting rules should be checked in the current index methodology and holdings file. |
| SOXX | U.S.-listed semiconductor equity index | 30 holdings, BlackRock iShares factsheet dated March 31, 2026 | 0.33% expense ratio, current iShares prospectus page accessed October 19, 2026 | Broad semiconductor value-chain exposure, including businesses benefiting from AI and digital-infrastructure investment. |
| SMH | MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index | 25 holdings, as represented by the cited VanEck product information | 0.35% total annual fund operating expenses, VanEck page showing October 13, 2026 holdings data | Most concentrated holding count in this comparison; the cited holdings page includes Micron Technology. VanEck warns that a narrow industry focus can concentrate risk in a few large names. |
| PSI | Dynamic Semiconductor Intellidex Index | Not stated in the cited current product extract; do not infer a count from another date | 0.55% total expense ratio, Invesco product page accessed October 19, 2026 | Factor screen evaluates price momentum, earnings momentum, quality, management action and value; the portfolio is rebalanced and reconstituted quarterly. |
“Broadest” here means the highest cited number of holdings, not guaranteed protection from a particular company, country or business model. The four funds can still overlap heavily in their largest positions.

1. Count holdings, but do not stop there
More holdings can reduce the effect of one company’s earnings surprise, yet the largest positions may still dominate returns. XSD’s cited 44 holdings exceed SOXX’s 30 and SMH’s 25. PSI’s comparable current count is not established by the cited product extract. Compare the percentage assigned to the top five and top ten holdings in each latest file, not just the number of lines in the file.
2. Identify direct memory producers
Search the current holdings for Micron Technology, SK hynix, Samsung Electronics and any other company whose principal business is memory. The cited SMH page specifically shows Micron, but the available documents do not provide a single date-matched percentage for all four ETFs. Do not carry an old allocation into a new article or investment decision.
3. Measure overlap with your existing portfolio
If you already own a large-cap technology fund, individual chip shares or a global equity fund, an ETF can duplicate the same companies. Export the holdings of the candidate ETF and your existing funds, standardize ticker symbols and calculate the combined portfolio weight of each memory producer. A fund that looks diversified on its own may add little diversification in your overall account.
4. Check geographic and listing exposure
U.S.-listed does not mean every underlying business is U.S.-based. Review issuer country, incorporation, principal listing and revenue exposure where the data is available. Country concentration can create a different risk from company concentration, including currency, regulation and geopolitical effects.
5. Examine index rules and turnover
Index methodology determines who enters, who leaves and how fast weights change. PSI’s quarterly rebalancing and reconstitution can produce a different set of exposures from a fixed constituent list. For SOXX, SMH and XSD, read the current methodology and rebalance schedule supplied by the issuer. A low holding count with strict caps may diversify differently from a larger basket that allows a few positions to dominate.
SOXX: established broad-sector basket
What it owns
SOXX tracks a U.S.-listed semiconductor equity index. BlackRock iShares’ March 31, 2026 factsheet lists 30 holdings. The fund description says it invests across the semiconductor value chain, including companies benefiting from AI and digital-infrastructure capital investment.

Cost and construction
The current iShares page lists a 0.33% expense ratio, the lowest stated expense figure among these four products. The fee is a recurring fund expense deducted from assets; it is not a separate bill sent to the shareholder.
Why it may fit a memory-risk-aware investor
- Thirty cited holdings provide a broader starting point than a 25-stock basket.
- Value-chain coverage can include businesses whose earnings drivers differ from memory pricing.
- The fee is modestly below the 0.35% figures cited for SMH and XSD.
What still needs checking
SOXX remains a sector fund, and its largest constituents can drive returns. Before purchase, download the current holdings and calculate direct memory exposure, top-position concentration and overlap with your other funds. The SEC summary prospectus advises investors to review the prospectus and fund risks before investing; those risks include the consequences of concentrating in one industry.

Index and fee
SMH tracks the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index. VanEck’s U.S. product page lists 0.35% total annual fund operating expenses and shows holdings data dated October 13, 2026.
Documented memory connection
The cited holdings page includes Micron Technology. That confirms exposure, but it does not establish Micron’s percentage for every trading day or prove that SMH has the highest memory allocation among the four. Use the latest file for the date you make your decision.
Concentration trade-off
With 25 cited holdings, SMH is the narrowest basket by the comparable holding counts supplied here. VanEck explicitly cautions: “A narrow industry focus concentrates risk in a few large names.” That warning matters when the same large companies appear in your other technology investments.
When the design may be useful
SMH can suit an investor who intentionally wants a focused semiconductor allocation and accepts greater single-company and sector volatility in exchange for a compact portfolio. It is not the automatic choice for minimizing memory exposure; its current weights must be compared with the alternatives.
PSI: factor-driven selection rather than a simple broad basket
How the index selects companies
PSI tracks the Dynamic Semiconductor Intellidex Index. Invesco says the index evaluates companies using “price momentum, earnings momentum, quality, management action, and value.” The fund is rebalanced and reconstituted quarterly.
Fee and interpretation
Invesco lists a 0.55% total expense ratio, higher than the stated ratios for SOXX, SMH and XSD. The fee pays for fund operating expenses; it does not guarantee better returns or lower memory sensitivity.
How quarterly changes can affect risk
A factor process can rotate toward companies scoring well on the selected measures and away from companies whose scores deteriorate. That may change memory exposure without a change in the fund’s name or broad sector label. Because the cited product extract does not provide a harmonized current holding count, assess PSI by its latest holdings, position limits, turnover and factor exposure rather than trying to rank it by count.

Who should investigate PSI
PSI is a candidate for investors who specifically want a rules-based factor tilt and are comfortable monitoring a higher stated expense ratio and periodic portfolio changes. It is less suitable for someone seeking a simple, stable list of the largest semiconductor companies.
XSD: breadth-oriented comparison point
Holdings and fee
State Street Global Advisors’ March 31, 2026 factsheet lists 44 holdings for XSD, the highest cited count among the four products. The same factsheet lists a 0.35% gross expense ratio.
What the larger count tells you
Forty-four positions can spread company-specific events across more names than a 25- or 30-stock basket, provided the weighting rules do not recreate heavy concentration at the top. It does not ensure that memory producers receive small allocations, nor does it remove equipment, foundry or design-cycle risk.
Questions to answer in the current file
- What percentage is assigned to each direct memory producer?
- How much of the portfolio is in the five largest positions?
- How many names overlap with your existing technology funds?
- Which countries and currencies account for the economic exposure?
XSD is therefore a breadth-oriented starting point, not a guarantee of the lowest memory sensitivity.
A repeatable process for measuring current memory exposure
Use the same procedure for every candidate so that you are comparing like with like. Record the retrieval date and keep the downloaded files with your notes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the issuer’s current holdings download. Use the fund website’s holdings or portfolio-data section, not a third-party table with an unknown update date.
- Record the as-of date. Put the date next to every percentage. Prices can move daily, and an index rebalance can change composition.
- Tag direct memory companies. Mark Micron Technology, SK hynix, Samsung Electronics and other companies whose principal business is memory. If a classification is ambiguous, note the reason rather than forcing it into a category.
- Sum direct memory weights. Add the portfolio percentages for the tagged companies. Label the result “direct memory producers” so it is not mistaken for total memory-linked economic exposure.
- Review adjacent exposures. Identify equipment, materials and manufacturing companies that may be sensitive to memory-fabrication capital spending. Keep this as a separate qualitative or quantitative category.
- Calculate top-five and top-ten concentration. Add the largest positions regardless of industry label. A low direct-memory total can still accompany high concentration in another semiconductor segment.
- Compare overlap across funds. Match issuer names and tickers, then calculate duplicated weights. If two ETFs each own the same company, their percentages add in your portfolio.
- Check country and listing data. Note where companies are incorporated and listed, and whether the fund’s index limits non-U.S. issuers.
- Read the methodology and rebalance calendar. Record caps, eligibility rules, quarterly changes and any special treatment of affiliated share classes.
- Save a dated snapshot. Repeat the review after a scheduled rebalance or when a large holding has a corporate action. Never present an old percentage as current.
Choosing among the four by investor objective
If breadth is your first screen
Start with XSD because its cited 44 holdings are the largest count in this comparison. Then verify that the weighting formula produces the concentration profile you want and that its current direct-memory total is acceptable.
If you want a broad, established core holding
SOXX provides 30 cited holdings, semiconductor value-chain coverage and a 0.33% expense ratio. It can serve as a core-sector candidate when its current overlap and memory allocation fit your portfolio.
If you deliberately want a focused basket
SMH’s 25-stock index is the most compact cited basket and has documented Micron exposure. Choose it only if you accept the possibility that a few large names will drive results, as the issuer’s concentration warning describes.
If you want factor selection
PSI is the distinctive option because its index scores momentum, quality, management action and value and changes quarterly. Compare its latest factor exposures and turnover with the simplicity and cost of the other funds.

If minimizing memory risk is the overriding objective
Do not select by ticker, holding count or fee alone. Rank the candidates after completing the dated holdings analysis, then consider whether a non-semiconductor asset class would reduce portfolio sensitivity more effectively than switching between semiconductor ETFs.
Costs, trading and portfolio role
Understanding the stated expense ratios
The cited recurring expense figures are 0.33% for SOXX, 0.35% for SMH, 0.55% for PSI and 0.35% gross for XSD. A gross ratio is the fund’s stated operating expense before any contractual waivers or reimbursements; confirm the current prospectus for the net figure, if one is provided. Small fee differences compound over time, but a lower fee cannot offset a concentration level that is unsuitable for your objectives.
Use a position size that matches sector risk
A semiconductor ETF is still a sector allocation. Decide what percentage of your total portfolio can lose value during a chip downturn before choosing the fund. Keep the ETF’s role explicit—for example, a satellite allocation around a diversified core—rather than treating it as a complete equity portfolio.
Allow for trading frictions
Expense ratios do not include every cost you may incur. Bid-ask spreads, brokerage charges, taxes and the difference between the fund’s market price and net asset value can affect your result. Use limit orders when appropriate, avoid trading solely because of a short-term memory-price move and check your broker’s current terms.
Risks that remain after diversification
- Industry cyclicality: Semiconductor demand, inventories and capital spending can turn together across many holdings.
- Large-company concentration: A handful of positions can dominate performance even when the fund has many line items.
- Memory pricing risk: Direct memory producers and memory-sensitive suppliers may decline during oversupply or weak demand.
- Technology and product transitions: A company can lose competitiveness when a manufacturing process, architecture or end market changes.
- Geopolitical and regulatory exposure: Cross-border supply chains, export controls and local-market rules can affect several holdings at once.
- Currency and foreign-market risk: U.S. listing does not eliminate exposure to non-U.S. operations or currencies.
- Methodology and turnover risk: Reconstitutions can change exposures, create trading costs and produce taxable distributions in taxable accounts.
- Tracking difference: The ETF’s return can differ from its index because of fees, sampling, transaction costs and corporate actions.
Read each fund’s prospectus and summary risk disclosures before investing. The SEC summary prospectus for SOXX states that investors may want to review the prospectus, which contains more information about the fund and its risks.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating a semiconductor ETF as a memory hedge
Correction: Separate direct memory holdings from broader semiconductor exposure and compare the resulting percentages with your overall portfolio.
Mistake: using a stale holdings table
Correction: Put the issuer’s as-of date beside every allocation and refresh it after a rebalance or major corporate action.
Mistake: assuming more holdings always means lower risk
Correction: Inspect top-position weights, overlap and index caps. Forty-four lightly weighted names can behave differently from a concentrated 25-name portfolio, but the count alone cannot tell you which is safer.

Mistake: ignoring your existing funds
Correction: Aggregate duplicate companies across every account before deciding that a new ETF adds diversification.
Mistake: expecting factor rules to stay constant
Correction: For PSI, monitor the quarterly rebalancing and reconstitution schedule and review the new holdings after each change.

A practical decision checklist
- Have you defined how much semiconductor-sector exposure your total portfolio can tolerate?
- Did you download each candidate’s holdings from the issuer and record the same as-of date?
- Did you calculate direct exposure to Micron Technology, SK hynix, Samsung Electronics and other memory producers?
- Did you assess memory-sensitive equipment and manufacturing exposure separately?
- Did you add overlapping positions from your existing funds?
- Did you compare top-five concentration, country exposure, index rules and rebalance schedules?
- Did you distinguish XSD’s gross expense figure from net expenses elsewhere?
- Are you comfortable with the stated fee, turnover and remaining sector risks?
- Have you checked the current prospectus and considered tax advice for your jurisdiction?
After answering these questions, choose the fund whose current construction supports your portfolio role—not the one with the most appealing ticker or a single historical performance chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any of these ETFs eliminate memory-chip cycle risk?
No. Each fund remains exposed to semiconductor demand, capital spending and supply-chain cycles. A lower direct-memory percentage can reduce one source of sensitivity, but it cannot hedge the entire sector.
How often should I recheck an ETF’s memory exposure?
Review the holdings after each scheduled index rebalance and whenever a major holding has a merger, spin-off or other corporate action. If the allocation is important to your portfolio, also set a calendar review using the issuer’s latest dated file.
Is XSD automatically safer because it lists 44 holdings?
No. The holding count is the highest cited here, but weighting rules, top-position concentration, overlap and country exposure determine how diversified the actual portfolio is.
Where can I find the authoritative data for a purchase decision?
Use the current holdings download, index methodology, prospectus and risk disclosures published by the relevant fund issuer. Record the document dates so you know exactly which portfolio you evaluated.
