Evaluate Tabby for a centrally operated code-completion service, Continue for configurable IDE and CLI assistance, Aider for terminal-based, Git-aware pair programming, and OpenHands for broader software-agent workflows. The right choice depends on where the model, repository context, logs, and agent execution run—not just where the interface is installed.
What “self-hosted” means for a private codebase
“Self-hosted” can describe different parts of a coding-assistant setup: an IDE extension, a model inference server, a service that indexes repository context, or an agent runtime and sandbox. Those components do not necessarily share a data boundary. A tool may run in your environment while sending requests to a separately configured hosted model or connecting to other services.
Before choosing a product, trace where each of these goes: prompts and code snippets, repository indexes, telemetry, application logs, error reports, authentication tokens, and commands executed by an agent. Check the actual model endpoint and integrations in the configuration you intend to deploy. The official product pages describe capabilities and deployment choices, but do not establish a complete security audit or a guarantee for every configuration.
How the four options differ
| Option | Primary workflow | Documented context or model choices | Best fit to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tabby | Self-hosted code-completion server, with IDE extensions and chat/search capabilities | Can index repository-associated material for completion, chat, and search; supports coding models including CodeLlama, StarCoder, and CodeGen. | Teams that want to operate a shared completion service and manage repository context under their deployment controls. |
| Continue | IDE-centered assistant with agent, chat, edit, and autocomplete modes, plus a terminal CLI | Documentation includes model configuration, Ollama, offline use, and self-hosting a model. The configured provider and endpoint determine whether a particular setup is local. | Developers who want several assistance modes in their IDE and flexibility to choose a model configuration. |
| Aider | Terminal-based AI pair programming for new or existing codebases | Supports local and cloud LLMs, maps a codebase, integrates with Git, and can run linters and tests after edits. | Developers comfortable with a terminal and Git who want an explicit edit-and-review workflow. |
| OpenHands | Software-agent ecosystem with client, agent, and sandbox components | Agent Canvas can connect to local, self-hosted, Cloud, or Enterprise backends; the ecosystem also includes a managed Cloud service and a community-supported Sandbox Server. | Teams investigating agent workflows that can involve command execution and sandbox operation. |
This is a comparison of documented workflows, not a ranking of coding quality. The official pages reviewed do not establish a comparative accuracy, speed, productivity, or privacy winner.

Which assistant fits each workflow?
Tabby: a self-managed completion service with repository context
Tabby describes itself as an open-source, self-hosted AI coding assistant. Its overview focuses on an LLM-powered completion server, while its context-provider documentation describes fetching repositories and related pull requests, issues, and commits; parsing repository content into an index; and using that context for completion, chat, and search. Local repositories can be provided through file://. With Docker, the directory must be mounted and the path must be the one visible inside the container. For private GitHub or GitLab sources, the documented setup uses a personal access token. Review the grant and fetched data as part of your access-control design rather than assuming that indexing is limited to the files currently open in an editor. Tabby’s context-provider documentation
There are operational details to weigh if you run Tabby centrally: its FAQ says it supports one GPU per instance and advises against placing the Tabby root directory on NFS because SQLite depends on file locking that some network filesystems may not provide reliably. Tabby FAQ

Continue: configurable IDE and CLI assistance
Continue documents agent, chat, edit, and autocomplete modes for VS Code and JetBrains, as well as a terminal CLI. Its documentation also covers Ollama, using the assistant without internet, and self-hosting a model. These guides make it a candidate for developers who want to configure an IDE-first workflow around a local model, but they do not make every Continue setup local by default. Confirm the provider and endpoint in the actual configuration. Continue documentation
Aider: terminal pair programming with Git
Aider is designed for terminal-based work on new or existing codebases. Its feature documentation describes codebase mapping, Git integration, and the ability to run linters and tests after edits, as well as support for both local and cloud LLMs. Its documentation also highlights several cloud models, so selecting Aider alone does not establish that prompts stay on your own machines or servers. Choose and verify the intended local or organization-controlled model configuration if that is a requirement. Aider

OpenHands: agent execution and sandbox components
OpenHands covers more than an IDE assistant. Its documentation distinguishes Agent Canvas, a browser client and control center, from the Software Agent SDK and Agent Server, the managed OpenHands Cloud service, Enterprise options, and a community-supported Sandbox Server. For a private codebase, identify which backend receives the request and where tools or commands run; do not treat the local or self-hosted components as interchangeable with Cloud. The documentation also notes that public repositories have their own licenses, so check the license for the specific component you plan to use. OpenHands introduction

- Locate inference. Record whether the model runs on a developer workstation, an organization-controlled server, a private cloud, or a third-party hosted provider.
- Trace each data type. Check the destinations for prompts, code snippets, repository indexes, telemetry, logs, tokens, and error reports separately; they may not all follow the model request’s route.
- Inspect integrations. Check configured providers, proxies, and connected services rather than inferring data handling from the location of the IDE extension or server.
- Review repository grants. If a tool indexes a private repository, document what access it receives and what associated material it fetches. For Tabby’s documented GitHub/GitLab route, that includes reviewing the personal access token used for private repository access.
- Locate execution. For agent workflows, establish where commands run and how the execution environment is sandboxed. A chat response and an agent that can operate on a codebase create different operational questions.
What hardware is needed to run a coding model locally?
There is no general VRAM requirement that applies to all four tools or every model. Tabby’s FAQ estimates approximately 8 GB of VRAM for CodeLlama-7B in its default int8 CUDA mode. That is an example for that model and configuration—not a universal minimum, nor evidence that every workload will fit or perform well at that capacity. Tabby FAQ
Choose the model and workload first, then check their actual memory needs and test them on the hardware you plan to operate. The reviewed documentation does not support naming a particular GPU as sufficient for every local coding-assistant setup.

How to choose: run a small, representative pilot
Shortlist by interaction style first, then test the configuration you would actually deploy. A useful pilot uses representative tasks and a non-production or appropriately controlled repository. Compare the same kinds of work in each candidate rather than relying on feature lists alone.
- Match the workflow. Start with completion, IDE chat/edit/agent modes, terminal pair programming, repository indexing, or agent execution—whichever your developers need.
- Pin down the deployment. Record where the interface, inference endpoint, repository-context service, and any agent sandbox run.
- Test representative code tasks. Use your languages, project conventions, editor or terminal workflow, and expected review process. Measure the results your team cares about; the reviewed official documentation does not provide a like-for-like quality benchmark.
- Review access and operations. Check repository permissions, token scope, storage, updates, logs, and the operational ownership required to keep the chosen deployment running.
- Make the decision configuration-specific. Document the exact model provider, endpoint, integrations, and execution location that passed review. A product’s support for local operation is not a substitute for verifying the settings used by your team.
