Best security camera storage plans compared: Nest, Ring and Arlo depends on what you need stored. Ring Protect Multi is the lowest-cost choice for several cameras and event clips; Google Home Premium Advanced is strongest for 24/7 history and AI search; Arlo Secure Plus suits Arlo owners who prefer its detection features. Prices below are U.S. prices checked August 16–18, 2026.
Cloud storage is not one feature. A plan may retain motion-triggered clips, continuous footage, searchable video, or only short previews. The right choice depends on your camera model, number of cameras, power source, privacy preferences, and whether you need professional monitoring.
Key takeaways
- Ring Protect Multi costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and covers all Ring cameras and doorbells at one location with up to 180 days of event-video history.
- Google Home Premium Advanced costs $20 per month or $200 per year and adds Gemini-assisted video search, descriptions, daily summaries, 60 days of event history, and up to 10 days of 24/7 history on compatible devices.
- Ring Protect Solo is the cheapest one-camera plan at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, while Arlo Secure Plus Single Camera costs $7.99 per month with annual billing or $9.99 per month with monthly billing.
- Arlo Secure Plus Unlimited costs $17.99 per month with annual billing or $19.99 per month monthly and covers unlimited Arlo cameras, but Arlo continuous recording has separate compatibility and plan conditions.
- Event-history days are not the same as continuous-recording days: Ring’s 180 days primarily covers motion-event videos, while Google Advanced lists up to 10 days of continuous history for compatible cameras and wired doorbells.
- Local storage can reduce cloud dependence, but Ring requires compatible Alarm Pro hardware and a microSD card, while Arlo requires compatible cameras, hubs, and storage configurations.

What exactly does a security camera storage plan save?
A security camera storage plan may save event clips, continuous video, searchable footage, or short previews. Those are different services, and a plan’s advertised number of storage days does not automatically mean that every second was recorded.
Event-based recording
Event-based recording creates a clip when the camera detects a configured event, such as motion, a person, package, vehicle, animal, sound, or another trigger. Event history is useful for reviewing alerts, but it may not contain activity that the camera failed to detect.
24/7 continuous recording
24/7 recording continuously uploads or records footage, allowing you to inspect moments that did not trigger an alert. Continuous recording normally requires a compatible wired camera and a reliable power and internet connection. Battery cameras generally cannot provide conventional always-on recording while operating wirelessly.
Live view, previews, and saved clips
Live view means watching the camera in real time; live view is not the same as recording. A thumbnail or short event preview may be available without a subscription even when the full clip is not retained. Downloaded or shared clips can also follow different retention rules from clips left in the provider’s cloud archive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google’s storage guidance explicitly distinguishes event video history from 24/7 video history and explains that newer Google cameras may provide limited event previews without a subscription.
How much do Nest, Ring, and Arlo plans cost?
Ring is usually cheapest for one camera and for several cameras, while Google becomes competitive when a household has multiple compatible Nest devices and needs only event history.
| Household need | Lowest relevant option | Listed cost | What the price means |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Ring camera or doorbell | Ring Protect Solo | $4.99/month or $49.99/year | One device with event-video storage |
| One Arlo camera | Arlo Secure Plus Single | $7.99/month annual billing; $9.99/month monthly | One camera with Arlo cloud history and detection features |
| Several Ring cameras | Ring Protect Multi | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | All Ring devices at one location |
| Several compatible Nest devices | Google Home Premium Standard | $10/month or $100/year | Whole-home compatible-device coverage with 30 days of event history |
| Several Arlo cameras | Arlo Secure Plus Unlimited | $17.99/month annual billing; $19.99/month monthly | Unlimited Arlo cameras with 60-day history |
| Google cameras needing 24/7 history | Google Home Premium Advanced | $20/month or $200/year | Whole-home coverage plus up to 10 days of compatible continuous history |
For annual billing, Ring Multi costs $99.99 per year rather than $119.88 when paying $9.99 monthly. Google Standard costs $100 per year rather than $120, and Google Advanced costs $200 per year rather than $240. Arlo Plus Unlimited costs $17.99 per month when billed annually versus $19.99 monthly; Arlo’s listed $24.99 Premium price is an annual-billing monthly rate, so a monthly equivalent should not be inferred.
Which plan is cheapest for one camera?
Ring Protect Solo is the cheapest one-camera plan among these three brands. Ring lists Solo at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year for one Ring camera or doorbell, with up to 180 days of event-video storage.

- 2K Resolution, Day and Night Clarity: Capture every event that occurs around your home in 3MP resolution. More than just daytime, 4 LED lights increase the light source by 100% compared to 2 LED lights, allowing more to be seen for excellent color night vision.
Choose based on the camera you already own. A cheaper plan from another ecosystem cannot store footage from an incompatible camera.
Which plan is best for multiple cameras?
Ring Protect Multi is the clearest value for multiple Ring cameras. Ring lists Multi at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and covers all Ring cameras and doorbells at one location. Ring also lists up to 180 days of stored motion-event videos and person, package, and vehicle alerts.
Google Home Premium Standard is similarly priced at $10 per month or $100 per year and covers compatible Google and Nest devices across the home. Google Standard is the better fit when the household already uses Nest cameras and event history is sufficient.
Arlo Secure Plus Unlimited costs substantially more—$17.99 per month with annual billing or $19.99 monthly—but covers unlimited Arlo cameras. Arlo’s higher price may be worthwhile for an existing Arlo household that values Arlo’s detection ecosystem, but the plan is not the lowest-cost route to multi-camera cloud storage.
Which service retains event footage the longest?
Ring has the longest advertised event-history retention among the three brands. Ring lists up to 180 days for stored motion-event videos, compared with 30 days on Google Home Premium Standard, 60 days on Google Home Premium Advanced, and 60 days on Arlo’s current plan pages.
| Brand or plan | Advertised event/video history | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Protect Solo, Multi, and Pro | Up to 180 days | Primarily stored motion-event videos, not an ordinary full-time archive |
| Google Home Premium Standard | 30 days | Event history |
| Google Home Premium Advanced | 60 days | Event history, plus separate 24/7 history on compatible devices |
| Arlo Secure | 60 days | Arlo describes video and event history; device and plan eligibility applies |
Longer retention does not guarantee better evidence. An event-based camera can miss activity because motion occurred outside a detection zone, Wi-Fi was unavailable, the camera was asleep, the trigger threshold was too high, or the plan and device did not support the requested feature.
Which plan is best for continuous recording?
Google Home Premium Advanced is the clearest mainstream choice for continuous history. Google lists up to 10 days of 24/7 video history for compatible cameras and wired doorbells. Compatibility matters: not every Nest model supports continuous history, and battery-powered cameras generally cannot record continuously while operating on battery power.
Recommended Free Tools
Ring offers 24/7 recording for eligible cameras, but Ring requires a Protect plan plus an additional $3 per month per camera. Ring Elite models have separate pricing. That per-camera fee can make continuous recording expensive in a multi-camera installation.
Arlo lists 24/7 continuous video recording with 30 days of continuous history on up to three cameras per paid subscription. Arlo’s continuous-recording eligibility, compatible hardware, and checkout price should be confirmed for the exact camera and plan because Arlo displays the feature separately from its standard 60-day event-history description.

Which plan has the best AI and video search?
Google Home Premium Advanced has the strongest search-oriented feature set. Google lists Gemini-assisted video search and descriptions, along with daily summaries, on the Advanced plan.
Arlo’s Plus and Premium plans emphasize detection and filtering features such as person, vehicle, package, and animal detection, activity zones, custom detection, and advanced audio detection, depending on the plan and camera.
Ring Protect Pro adds features such as video descriptions, Familiar Faces beta, and video search. Some Ring intelligence features may require Pro or a separate Pro Intelligence add-on, so buyers should check the current plan page for the exact camera and account.
These features are not interchangeable:
- Detection classifies an event, such as a person or vehicle.
- Description summarizes what happened in an event clip.
- Search lets you query or filter an archive of video history.
AI availability can vary by camera, plan, region, app rollout, and beta status. The Google Home Premium feature list, Arlo plan matrix, and Ring plan page should be checked against the exact camera model.
What are the Nest, Ring, and Arlo differences for whole-home coverage?
Google Home Premium is generally a whole-home subscription for compatible Google Nest devices. Ring separates one-device coverage from whole-location coverage: Solo covers one camera or doorbell, while Multi and Pro cover all Ring devices at one location. Arlo offers a single-camera tier and unlimited-camera tiers.
Google’s subscription documentation says that Google Home Premium features vary by subscription, device, and region. Legacy first-generation Nest Aware subscriptions may have different names, migration rules, and benefits from current Google Home Premium plans.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ring’s current public names are Ring Protect Solo, Multi, and Pro. Ring changed plan naming in 2026, so existing subscribers should check the billing page in their Ring account rather than assuming a legacy plan has exactly the same benefits as a newly purchased plan. The naming transition is described in Ring’s plan announcement.
What works without a subscription?
Without a subscription, a camera may still offer live viewing, notifications, or limited previews, but buyers should not assume that full cloud recording, searchable history, advanced alerts, or permanent saved footage will remain available.
| Ecosystem | What may remain available | What a paid plan adds or preserves | Key warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Nest | Newer cameras and doorbells may provide up to six hours of event-video previews without a subscription, depending on model | Longer event history, Advanced 24/7 history, and AI features | Older cameras generally require Google Home Premium for recorded history |
| Ring | Live view and device functions | Stored motion-event recordings and smart alerts | Ring says stored recordings are lost when a trial or subscription ends |
| Arlo | Some device functions during or after the trial | Cloud recording, premium detection, and 60-day history | Arlo’s new-device trial does not establish permanent free cloud storage |
Google’s exact free experience depends on the camera model. Ring states that recordings are lost when the trial or subscription ends if the user does not subscribe. Arlo provides a trial with new cameras, doorbells, floodlights, or security systems, but a paid plan is needed after the trial for premium cloud recording and related features. Download important clips before cancellation or expiration.

Can local storage eliminate the subscription?
Local storage can reduce or eliminate recurring cloud-storage costs in some setups, but it is not a universal feature of Nest, Ring, or Arlo. Local recording also shifts responsibility for hardware, storage failure, theft, damage, backups, and remote access to the owner.
Ring local storage
Ring Local Video Storage is available through a microSD card in a compatible Ring Alarm Pro setup. The solution requires Alarm Pro hardware and a separately sold microSD card; ordinary Ring cameras do not all contain a card slot or record locally by themselves.
Arlo local storage
Arlo local recording depends on compatible cameras, hubs, and storage configurations. Some newer Arlo cameras cannot use Arlo base stations or hubs, so buyers must verify compatibility by exact model before buying a SmartHub, base station, or storage accessory.
Google Nest local storage
The mainstream Nest storage model is cloud-oriented. Buyers should not assume that Google One or Google Drive storage allowances automatically provide an ordinary local or cloud Nest camera archive.
For buyers whose primary goal is subscription avoidance, dedicated local-recording ecosystems such as Reolink, UniFi Protect, or selected Eufy Security products may be worth investigating. Those alternatives require model-specific checks for NVR, microSD, privacy, and cloud features and are not direct price comparisons in this article.

| Situation | Best starting point | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Ring camera or doorbell | Ring Protect Solo | Lowest listed entry price and up to 180 days of event history | Only one device is covered |
| Two or more Ring cameras | Ring Protect Multi | All devices at one location for $9.99/month or $99.99/year | Standard storage is event-based |
| Several compatible Nest cameras | Google Home Premium Standard | Whole-home coverage at $10/month or $100/year | No 24/7 history listed |
| Wired cameras requiring continuous history | Google Home Premium Advanced | Up to 10 days of 24/7 history on compatible cameras and wired doorbells | $20/month or $200/year; compatibility required |
| Battery-powered cameras | Event-based plan from the existing ecosystem | Battery cameras are generally unsuitable for conventional 24/7 recording | Important activity between events may not be captured |
| Natural-language video search | Google Home Premium Advanced | Gemini-assisted search, descriptions, and daily summaries | Requires compatible Google devices and the Advanced tier |
| Arlo detection and activity zones | Arlo Secure Plus | Designed around Arlo’s detection and activity-zone features | Unlimited coverage costs more than Ring Multi |
| Professional monitoring | Ring Protect Pro or Arlo Secure Premium | Both bundle storage with monitoring-oriented services | Monitoring is not the same as continuous recording or guaranteed response |
| Lowest cloud dependence | Compatible local-storage setup | Can keep recordings on owner-controlled hardware | Requires compatible hardware, maintenance, and an off-site-backup strategy |
What should you check before buying?
- Identify the exact camera model. Plan features can differ between camera generations, wired and battery models, doorbells, and devices migrated to Google Home.
- Separate event history from 24/7 history. A plan advertising 60 or 180 days usually refers to event clips, not every second of footage.
- Count covered cameras. Ring Solo covers one device; Ring Multi and Pro cover one location; Google covers compatible devices in the home; Arlo separates single-camera and unlimited-camera tiers.
- Calculate add-ons. Ring continuous recording adds $3 per month per eligible camera. Arlo continuous recording and monitoring have separate eligibility and tier conditions.
- Confirm power requirements. Conventional 24/7 recording generally requires a wired camera or permanent power source.
- Check local-storage hardware. Ring requires compatible Alarm Pro and microSD hardware; Arlo requires compatible cameras and hubs.
- Compare monthly and annual billing. Annual prices may lower the effective monthly rate, but do not assume a monthly plan exists at the same equivalent price.
- Download important footage before cancellation. Ring explicitly warns that stored recordings are lost after a trial or subscription ends without continued service.
- Secure the account. Use a strong unique password, multifactor authentication, and official household-sharing controls instead of sharing the master password.
- Review privacy policies separately. Cloud footage is held by a vendor-controlled service; local storage improves control but can be lost through theft, damage, card failure, or lack of backup.
Are professional monitoring and video storage the same thing?
Professional monitoring and video storage are different services even when a plan bundles them together. Monitoring may add live-agent intervention, emergency dispatch, or alarm response, while storage determines which video is retained and for how long.
A monitoring plan does not automatically provide longer retention, continuous recording, police acceptance of every alert, guaranteed response, or protection against camera, power, or internet failure. Compare monitoring availability, emergency-dispatch rules, false-alarm procedures, and local jurisdictional limits separately from storage.
Ring Protect Pro is listed at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year. Arlo Secure Premium Unlimited is listed at $24.99 per month with annual billing. The plans are not interchangeable on price alone because supported hardware and monitoring services differ.
What happens when a Nest, Ring, or Arlo subscription ends?
When a subscription ends, cloud history and premium features can change immediately or after the provider’s stated retention process. Download evidence before cancellation and test the camera afterward instead of assuming the previous experience will continue.

Which security camera storage plan should you buy?
Buy Ring Protect Solo for the cheapest one-camera cloud plan, or Ring Protect Multi for the lowest-cost straightforward coverage of several Ring cameras. Ring is the strongest value when event-based recording and long event retention matter more than continuous recording.
Buy Google Home Premium Standard when you already own several compatible Nest devices and need whole-home event history. Choose Google Home Premium Advanced when 24/7 history, Gemini-assisted video search, descriptions, and daily summaries justify $200 per year.
Choose Arlo Secure Plus when you already use multiple Arlo cameras and prefer Arlo’s detection ecosystem. Choose Arlo Secure Premium or Ring Protect Pro only when professional monitoring is an actual requirement, not merely because monitoring appears alongside storage in the plan description.
Choose a local-storage-compatible system when avoiding recurring cloud costs and reducing cloud dependence are more important than effortless off-site backup. Local storage is not automatically safer: protect the storage device, test recovery, and maintain an off-site copy of important footage.

Is Ring cheaper than Google Nest and Arlo for camera storage?
Ring is generally cheaper for one camera and for several cameras. Ring Protect Solo costs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, while Ring Protect Multi costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year; Google and Arlo can offer better value when their ecosystem-specific features or whole-home coverage are needed.
Does 180 days of Ring storage mean Ring records continuously for 180 days?
No. Ring’s advertised 180-day period primarily applies to stored motion-event videos. Continuous recording is limited to eligible cameras and requires an additional $3-per-month-per-camera fee on top of a Ring Protect plan.
Can Nest, Ring, or Arlo cameras record without a subscription?
Some camera functions may remain available without a subscription, but full cloud recording and advanced features are not guaranteed. Newer Google cameras may provide limited event previews, Ring retains live viewing and device functions but says stored recordings are lost after service ends, and Arlo requires a paid plan after its trial for premium cloud recording.
Which security camera plan is best for 24/7 recording?
Google Home Premium Advanced is the clearest mainstream option, with up to 10 days of 24/7 history on compatible cameras and wired doorbells. Ring and Arlo also list continuous-recording options, but eligibility, camera compatibility, power requirements, camera limits, and extra charges must be checked first.

Local storage can reduce or eliminate recurring cloud-storage costs in compatible setups, but it is not universal. Ring requires compatible Alarm Pro hardware and a microSD card, while Arlo requires compatible cameras, hubs, and storage configurations.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Ring Protect Multi is the practical value pick for multi-camera event storage, Google Home Premium Advanced is the feature pick for compatible wired cameras, continuous history, and AI search, and Arlo Secure Plus is the ecosystem pick for Arlo owners. No subscription is the best answer only when you have verified local storage or accept losing cloud history and advanced features.
