The best secure home router is one that supports WPA3 Personal (or at least WPA2 Personal), receives ongoing software updates, and gives you control over risky convenience features such as remote management, WPS, and UPnP. No current model ranking is established here, so use the checklist below to compare routers and verify model-specific claims before buying.
Which Wi-Fi security mode should a secure router support?
Look for WPA3 Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes WPA3 as the newer and best encryption available for home Wi-Fi. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance says WPA2 is also an acceptable option. If an older router cannot use either WPA3 or WPA2 after its software is updated, consider replacing it.
Confirm the mode in the router’s specifications or administration interface rather than relying on a generic claim such as “secure Wi-Fi.” Check which modes the router supports and whether they are available for the network configuration you plan to use.
How will the router receive security updates?
Router software, often called firmware, needs to stay current. Before buying, check whether updates are automatic, how they are installed, and how long the manufacturer says it will provide software updates. The FTC’s November 2024 guidance on smart-device updates advises buyers to look for the manufacturer’s stated update-support period.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For an ISP-provided router, ask the ISP whether it sends automatic updates. A manufacturer’s update policy is useful only if it applies to the specific model and version you are buying; verify that commitment directly rather than assuming all routers from one brand have the same support period.
Which settings should you be able to control?
A secure router should let you change default access details and manage features that expose the network to remote access or automatic device connections. After setup, review these controls:

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Administrative credentials: Change the default administrator username and password to unique values.
- Wi-Fi credentials: Replace the default network name and password with unique choices.
- Remote management: Turn it off unless you need to administer the router from outside your home network.
- WPS: The FTC advises turning Wi-Fi Protected Setup off.
- UPnP: Turn Universal Plug and Play off unless you have a specific need for it.
The FTC recommends disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) also advises disabling UPnP and remote management when they are not needed in its home-router security guidance. CISA’s document is legacy guidance, so treat it as corroboration for those settings rather than evidence of current model features.
Does the router provide a guest network and firewall?
Prefer a router that supports a guest network so visitors can use Wi-Fi without joining your main network. Also check that the router has a firewall setting and that the firewall is enabled. The FTC includes both guest networking and checking the firewall among its home Wi-Fi security recommendations.
Rank #3
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to apply the checklist after installation
- Open the router’s administration interface using the instructions for your model or ISP.
- Change the default administrative username and password, then change the Wi-Fi network name and password to unique values.
- Choose WPA3 Personal where supported; use WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable.
- Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP unless you have a specific reason to keep a feature enabled.
- Create a guest network for visitors and confirm that the firewall is on.
- Log out of the administration interface when finished. Check for firmware updates and establish whether the manufacturer or, for an ISP-provided router, the ISP supplies automatic updates.
These are configuration recommendations, not guaranteed features or settings on every router. Menu names and paths vary by model and provider.
