Comet is the closest directly documented Ahsay alternative in the available comparison. Both support BaaS and self-hosted storage models, white-label MSP operations, automatic backup, unlimited retention, immutable backup, AES-256 encryption and two-factor authentication. Choose a cloud-first service such as Cove Data Protection when minimizing infrastructure operations matters more than storage ownership; choose Veeam Data Platform when broad workload orchestration and enterprise integration are the priority. MSP360 Backup and Datto are additional candidates, but every provider should verify current workload support, key custody, restore validation, migration tooling, pricing and partner terms before committing.

What Ahsay sets as the baseline

Ahsay is not a narrow endpoint backup tool. Its current product material describes deployment from the cloud or a provider’s own hardware, white-label branding, immutable backup, AES-256 encryption, two-factor authentication, deduplication, compression, restore drills and integrity checks. The listed workload range includes Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, databases, NAS, Linux bare metal, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.

That breadth changes how an MSP should define an alternative. Replacing only the backup agent is not enough if the replacement loses tenant separation, storage choice, mobile coverage, database protection or recovery testing. Use Ahsay’s capabilities as a checklist, then test the operational details that determine whether a service is genuinely secure at scale.

Ahsay capability Why an MSP needs it Verification question for an alternative
Cloud or self-hosted deployment Lets the provider balance operational simplicity, data residency and infrastructure control. Can the service run in vendor cloud, on provider infrastructure, or both? Which functions require vendor hosting?
White-label branding Allows the MSP to present backup as its own managed service. Can portals, agents, alerts, reports and recovery communications use the MSP’s identity?
Immutable backup Reduces the chance that ransomware or a compromised administrator can alter recovery points. What exactly is immutable: blocks, snapshots, metadata, retention policy or the entire tenant? Who can shorten retention?
AES-256 encryption and 2FA Protects data in transit and at rest and reduces account-takeover risk. Where is encryption performed, who controls keys, and can administrators enforce 2FA for every role?
Restore drills and integrity checks Shows that recovery points are usable rather than merely present. Are validation and test restores automated, logged and reportable per tenant?
Broad workload coverage Prevents a separate backup stack for SaaS, servers, virtual machines, NAS and endpoints. Are the exact SaaS, database, hypervisor, NAS and mobile platforms used by your customers supported?

Shortlist: which alternative fits which MSP?

Comet: the closest documented like-for-like option

The July 31, 2025 Ahsay-versus-Comet table is the most direct evidence available for a side-by-side decision. It records both products as supporting Backup as a Service and DIY, self-hosted storage-based models. It also records white-label MSP backup, automatic backup, unlimited retention, immutable backup, cloud storage, bring-your-own-disk, AES-256 encryption and 2FA for both.

The same table shows meaningful differences in workload and platform coverage. Ahsay is recorded as supporting Google Workspace, QNAP, FreeBSD, IBM AIX, Proxmox VE, Android and iOS where the Comet column has limitations or no support. Treat those entries as a dated comparison, not a permanent product boundary: obtain a current support matrix for every operating system, hypervisor, SaaS workload and database you sell.

Backup-data validation is a particularly important qualification. The table marks Ahsay as supported and Comet as unsupported. Because validation features can change and the table is dated, ask Comet to demonstrate the current workflow: what is checked, whether checks run automatically, how failures are surfaced, and whether a tenant-level report can be retained for audit purposes.

When Comet is the right first proof of concept

  • You need both vendor-hosted and provider-controlled storage options.
  • Your service depends on white-label portals and delegated administration.
  • You want to compare immutable retention and AES-256 encryption without abandoning a bring-your-own-disk model.
  • Your customers fit the workloads Comet currently supports.

When Comet may not be the right fit

  • Your contracts require Google Workspace, QNAP, FreeBSD, IBM AIX, Proxmox VE, Android or iOS coverage that has not been confirmed in the current release.
  • Your compliance process requires built-in backup-data validation and the current product cannot provide an equivalent.
  • You need a migration path that preserves historical recovery points and the vendor cannot document that process.

Cloud-first versus provider-controlled storage

Deployment and storage ownership are security decisions, not merely purchasing preferences.

Cloud-first model

A cloud-first platform such as Cove can reduce the MSP’s burden of maintaining backup repositories, patching storage servers and capacity planning. G2 describes Cove as cloud-first and highlights a multi-tenant dashboard, which can simplify centralized operations. The trade-off is less direct control over storage location and infrastructure. Confirm data residency, tenant-level export, retention enforcement, deletion protections, encryption-key custody and the procedure for recovering data if the contract ends.

Self-hosted or hybrid model

Self-hosting can provide stronger control over geography, network paths, hardware and storage economics. It also makes the MSP responsible for repository hardening, access control, monitoring, patching, capacity, off-site copies and disaster recovery for the backup system itself. A platform that supports both BaaS and DIY storage gives you more design options, but it does not remove those responsibilities.

Questions that expose portability risk

  • Can you export data and metadata in a documented, usable format?
  • Can an encrypted backup be restored without the vendor’s management plane?
  • Who holds the encryption key, and what happens if the only key administrator leaves?
  • Can immutable retention survive account compromise and administrator credential theft?
  • Are egress fees, repository conversion and long-term retention included in the service model?

Security controls to compare in a proof of concept

Encryption and key custody

Ahsay states: “Ahsay encrypts all backup data (contents and filename) using a robust AES 256-bit encryption algorithm before transferring it over the internet or network to the backup destination(s).” It also says data remains encrypted at the destination and that a generated encryption key controls decryption.

For an alternative, document where encryption occurs, whether filenames and metadata are covered, how keys are generated and rotated, which roles can recover or reset keys, and how a lost key is handled. A platform can advertise AES-256 and still leave your recovery process undefined if key custody is not operationally documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Immutability and retention

Ahsay describes immutable data as data that cannot be changed, deleted, modified or encrypted. Ask the alternative to show the enforcement point and the bypass controls. Test a normal administrator, a tenant administrator and a compromised credential against the same recovery point. Verify whether retention can be shortened, whether legal holds exist, and whether immutable copies are isolated from the management plane.

Identity, 2FA and tenant isolation

Require 2FA for every administrator and customer role, not only the primary account. Review delegated permissions, service accounts, API tokens, session controls and audit logs. A multi-tenant dashboard is useful only if one tenant cannot discover another tenant’s jobs, metadata, storage paths or recovery data.

Integrity checks and restore validation

A successful backup job is not proof of a usable restore. Determine whether the platform validates backup data, performs automated restore drills, checks application consistency and records failures. Require a report that identifies the tenant, protected workload, recovery point, test date, result and remediation owner.

Workload coverage: build the matrix from your contracts

Do not accept a generic “supports servers” claim. List every workload that appears in customer agreements and map it to an agent, connector or appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Workload category Examples in Ahsay’s listed coverage Acceptance test
SaaS Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace Protect mail, files, collaboration data and administrative metadata; perform a granular and full-tenant restore.
Virtual machines VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox Back up a representative VM, restore to an isolated network and measure the actual recovery sequence.
Databases Databases generally, with the exact engine requiring confirmation Test application-consistent backup, point-in-time recovery and credential handling.
NAS and file servers NAS, including QNAP in the dated comparison Preserve permissions, timestamps, links and large-file behavior.
Physical systems Linux bare metal, Windows, macOS and Linux Perform a bare-metal or full-system recovery using replacement hardware or a virtual target.
Mobile endpoints iOS and Android Confirm current application availability, supported data types and restore limitations.

Migration plan for an MSP

Run migration as a controlled service change, not as a single agent replacement. Keep the existing protection active until the new platform has produced verified recovery points.

  1. Inventory contracts and recovery objectives. Record each tenant, workload, retention requirement, recovery-point objective, recovery-time objective, legal hold, data-residency requirement and escalation contact.
  2. Classify data and keys. Identify where existing backups reside, who controls encryption keys, which tenants share repositories and whether historical data must remain restorable after cutover.
  3. Shortlist by hard requirements. Eliminate candidates that cannot cover a contracted workload, required geography, white-label workflow, immutable-retention rule or administrator-control model.
  4. Request current documentation. Obtain the release-specific workload matrix, security architecture, key-management procedure, retention behavior, audit-log schema, export format, API limits and partner terms. Do not treat a dated comparison as current product documentation.
  5. Build a representative pilot. Include at least one SaaS tenant, virtual machine, physical server, database, NAS share and endpoint if those appear in your estate. Include a large dataset and a deliberately constrained network.
  6. Configure isolation before ingesting data. Create separate tenants, roles, storage targets, encryption keys and alert routes. Test that support staff can perform assigned tasks without cross-tenant visibility.
  7. Seed and run parallel protection. Start initial copies while the existing service continues. Measure transfer behavior, changed-block efficiency, throttling, failure handling and alert quality under normal production conditions.
  8. Prove recovery. Restore files, a full system, a VM, a database and SaaS objects. Record elapsed time, operator steps, dependencies, data loss and whether the result meets the contract.
  9. Test an incident scenario. Simulate a stolen administrator credential, a deleted tenant, a damaged repository and a lost encryption key. Document who can respond and what remains recoverable.
  10. Cut over in waves. Move low-risk tenants first, keep the old service read-only where possible, and define a rollback window. Notify customers of any changed recovery procedure.
  11. Retire only after retention obligations are met. Preserve historical recovery points, audit records and keys for the period promised in each contract. Obtain written confirmation of deletion only after the retention and legal requirements are satisfied.

RPO, RTO and retention decisions

RPO and RTO are not interchangeable with backup frequency or vendor marketing claims. Set them per workload. A file share may tolerate hourly protection, while a transactional database may require a different schedule and application-aware recovery method. A platform’s stated “automatic backup” capability does not establish a particular RPO; measure the schedule, queueing and transfer time in your environment.

Similarly, unlimited retention is a policy capability, not proof that every recovery point is immutable forever. Define the retention period, deletion authority, legal hold process, storage tier, expected growth and restore priority. Confirm whether immutable retention consumes separate capacity and whether the provider can demonstrate recovery from the oldest required point.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing by feature count alone. Fix: test the complete recovery workflow and the administrative controls behind each feature.
  • Assuming AES-256 answers the key question. Fix: document key ownership, escrow, rotation, recovery and separation of duties.
  • Confusing a dashboard with tenant isolation. Fix: perform cross-tenant access tests with customer and technician roles.
  • Treating immutability as a checkbox. Fix: attempt deletion, retention reduction and repository access with each relevant role.
  • Leaving validation until after migration. Fix: require automated integrity checks or restore drills in the pilot and retain the reports.
  • Ignoring portability. Fix: execute an export and an off-platform restore before signing a long-term agreement.
  • Publishing or budgeting unverified prices. Fix: obtain a current quote that states storage, egress, protected-workload units, support, minimums and partner incentives.

How to make the final decision

Choose Comet first when equivalence matters

Start with Comet when your design depends on white labeling, self-hosted or bring-your-own storage, unlimited retention, immutable copies, AES-256 encryption and 2FA in one MSP-oriented stack. Make the decision conditional on current workload support and demonstrated validation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a cloud-first platform when operations are the constraint

Evaluate Cove when your priority is reducing repository administration and operating through a centralized multi-tenant console. Make storage ownership, export, key custody and recovery portability explicit acceptance criteria.

Choose a broad infrastructure platform when environments are complex

Evaluate Veeam when customers have varied virtual, physical and application infrastructure and your team can support a more involved platform. Confirm the specific service-provider edition, delegation model, immutable repository architecture, licensing and white-label requirements.

Keep MSP360 and Datto in the second evaluation wave

MSP360 and Datto are named alternatives worth testing when their storage, continuity or channel model matches your service. Treat current feature support, migration tooling, tenant controls and commercial terms as open verification items rather than settled facts.

Vendor questions to put in writing

  • Which exact workloads and operating-system versions are supported today, and which are agentless or connector-based?
  • Can you enforce immutable retention against both tenant and provider administrators?
  • Where are encryption keys generated and stored, and can the MSP recover data without vendor intervention?
  • How are restore drills, integrity checks and failed jobs reported and exported?
  • Can each tenant use separate storage, keys, policies and administrators?
  • What data and metadata can be exported, in what format, and how is an independent restore performed?
  • What happens to backups, keys, licenses and support when a tenant or the MSP terminates service?
  • Which costs recur for protected workloads, storage, egress, retention, support and migration?
  • What service-provider, white-label and multi-tenant functions are included in the quoted edition?

Frequently asked questions

Is Comet more secure than Ahsay?

The available dated comparison does not establish that one is universally more secure. It records several shared controls, including immutable backup, AES-256 encryption and 2FA, while showing differences in workload coverage and backup-data validation. Security depends on the configured key, identity, isolation, retention and restore processes, so run the same proof-of-concept tests on both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an Ahsay alternative preserve existing backups?

Do not assume it can. Historical recovery-point portability depends on the source format, encryption keys, metadata and the destination platform’s import tools. Require a written migration method and demonstrate a restore from retained historical data before decommissioning Ahsay.

Do immutable backups eliminate the need for offline copies?

No. Immutability protects against defined modification and deletion paths, but it does not replace geographic redundancy, independent credentials, capacity planning or a tested recovery procedure. Decide whether your risk model also requires an isolated or offline copy.

What should a small MSP verify first?

Start with the workloads you actually sell, tenant isolation, key recovery, immutable-retention enforcement and one complete restore drill. These tests reveal more about operational risk than a long feature list.

Are current prices and partner economics comparable?

They are not established here. Obtain current vendor quotes and partner terms that specify licensing units, storage, egress, support, minimum commitments, migration services and any white-label or multi-tenant charges.
