Grim captures a Wayland screen or output; slurp lets you select a region interactively. Pipe the result to wl-copy to put it on the clipboard, or add Satty or swappy to annotate it. Choose Hyprshot if you prefer one Hyprland-focused command for windows, regions and monitors; choose Flameshot if you want a graphical annotation interface and have portal support configured.
Best Hyprland screenshot tools at a glance
| Tool | Best for | Capture and output | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| grim + slurp | A simple, composable Wayland workflow | grim captures; slurp provides interactive region selection. Pipe to wl-copy for clipboard output or to an annotation app. | Separate tools mean you choose the output path and any annotation step. Grim is described by the Hyprland wiki as a simple Wayland screenshot tool. |
| Hyprshot | Hyprland-oriented window, region or monitor capture in one command | Can save to a selected folder or copy to the clipboard. | Its documented dependencies include Hyprland, jq, grim, slurp, wl-clipboard and libnotify; hyprpicker is optional for freezing. |
| Satty | Modern screenshot annotation | Works after capture; the Hyprland wiki shows a grim-to-Satty pipeline with clipboard copying and timestamped output. | It is an annotation step, not a replacement for the capture utility. |
| swappy | Annotation in a grim-based pipeline | Can receive a screenshot on standard input. | Useful when you want to compose capture and annotation tools rather than use one integrated interface. |
| Flameshot | A graphical annotation interface | Offers a GUI-oriented workflow; Wayland capture depends on portal support. | Portal configuration may be needed, including xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland. |
| HyprCapture | Hyprland-oriented screenshot and recording workflows | Compositor-oriented screenshot and recording behavior. | Check current package availability and project maintenance before installing. |
| hyprsnap | A script-based, feature-rich capture workflow | Combines grim, slurp, rofi and hyprpicker for region, window or full-screen capture, including screen freezing. | As a newer alternative, package and maintenance details may change; verify them at install time. |
The Hyprland project’s Screenshots & Recording wiki is the primary reference for the grim, slurp, annotation and portal examples. Hyprshot’s project README documents its modes and dependencies; hyprsnap’s repository describes its script-based workflow.
Use grim and slurp for a simple region screenshot
This is the best starting point if you are comfortable with a terminal or keyboard shortcuts. The tools do separate jobs: slurp lets you draw the selection, and grim captures the selected geometry. Install the packages named grim and slurp using your distribution’s package manager; package names and availability vary by distribution.
Save the selected region to a PNG
Run:
grim -g "$(slurp)" ~/Pictures/screenshot.png
When slurp appears, select the area you want. Grim writes the capture to the path supplied. Use an existing writable directory, or change the filename and path to suit your setup.

Copy the selected region to the clipboard
Install wl-clipboard, then pipe the PNG directly to wl-copy:
grim -g "$(slurp)" - | wl-copy
The hyphen tells grim to write image data to standard output rather than a file. The Hyprland wiki documents this clipboard pipeline. If you want a full-screen capture copied to the clipboard, omit the geometry selection:
grim - | wl-copy
Add annotation with swappy
Install swappy if you want to mark up the capture after selecting it. The Hyprland wiki’s example sends grim’s output to swappy:
grim -g "$(slurp)" - | swappy -f -
For annotation plus clipboard output, use the output controls provided by your installed swappy version and configuration. The command above is the documented handoff; check swappy’s own usage information for any save or copy preferences you need.

Add annotation with Satty
Satty is another annotation step, positioned by the Hyprland wiki as a modern tool inspired by swappy and Flameshot. The wiki demonstrates piping a grim capture to Satty with clipboard copying and a timestamped output filename. Satty’s options can depend on its installed version, so use the current command shown by the Hyprland Screenshots & Recording page and verify its save behavior against your needs.
Choose Hyprshot for a single Hyprland-focused command
Hyprshot wraps common capture choices in one utility. Its README documents window, region and monitor modes, saving to a chosen folder and copying to the clipboard. This is convenient when you do not want to assemble separate grim and slurp commands for each capture type.
Install Hyprshot using a method supported by your distribution, then follow its current README for exact flags and configuration. The documented dependency chain includes Hyprland, jq, grim, slurp, wl-clipboard and libnotify. hyprpicker is optional and supports freezing behavior. Because installation sources and package availability vary, check the Hyprshot README before choosing a package or copying a command from an older guide.
Pick Hyprshot when you value a unified interface for window, region and monitor screenshots. Pick grim plus slurp when you want the smallest, most transparent building blocks and control over every pipe in the workflow.

When to use Flameshot, HyprCapture or hyprsnap
Flameshot: GUI annotation, with portal setup
Flameshot suits people who want to interact with a graphical annotation interface rather than pass the screenshot through a command-line pipeline. On Wayland, the Hyprland wiki warns that Flameshot relies on portal support. If capture does not work, check that the relevant desktop portal is installed and running; xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland may be required in a Hyprland setup. Portal configuration is a prerequisite to investigate, not a guarantee that every distribution’s setup is identical.
HyprCapture: compositor-oriented capture and recording
The Hyprland wiki describes HyprCapture as a Hyprland-oriented screenshot and recording utility. Consider it if you specifically want screenshot and recording behavior integrated around the compositor. Verify the project’s current package source and maintenance status before relying on it; those details can change.
hyprsnap: script-based screen freezing and capture
Hyprsnap combines grim, slurp, rofi and hyprpicker for workflows that include frozen-screen selection and region, window or full-screen captures. It may fit users who want a script-driven workflow with more components than the basic grim-and-slurp setup. Check the hyprsnap repository for current installation and maintenance details before installing.
Set up reliable keyboard shortcuts
Hyprland keybindings can launch the same commands you use in a terminal. Add a binding to your Hyprland configuration that invokes the command for your chosen workflow—for example, the region-to-clipboard command grim -g "$(slurp)" - | wl-copy. The exact binding syntax and config location can depend on your Hyprland configuration, so use the keybind format already present in your setup. Test the command in a terminal first: that separates capture or dependency errors from shortcut configuration errors.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
slurp selection appears, but no screenshot is produced
Check that grim is installed and that the command runs from a terminal. Confirm the output path is writable if saving to a file. If using the clipboard pipeline, install wl-clipboard and confirm wl-copy is available.
The clipboard remains empty
Make sure the command ends with | wl-copy and that grim outputs to standard output with -, as in grim -g "$(slurp)" - | wl-copy. Without the output hyphen, grim may write to a file or expect a filename instead of supplying image bytes to the pipe.
Hyprshot fails to start or a mode does not work
Review the README’s dependency list and install missing components, particularly jq, grim, slurp, wl-clipboard and libnotify. Check the current Hyprshot instructions for the exact mode flags and folder settings; do not assume an older example matches your installed version.
Flameshot cannot capture on Wayland
Investigate portal support first. The Hyprland wiki notes that Flameshot depends on it for Wayland capture; ensure the appropriate portal components are installed and configured for your distribution, potentially including xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland.

A menu disappears before the capture
Use a workflow with screen-freezing support rather than a plain capture command, and confirm its dependencies and behavior in your setup. Hyprshot documents optional hyprpicker freezing; hyprsnap combines hyprpicker with its script-based workflow. Availability and configuration can vary.
How to choose
- Choose grim + slurp for a minimal, dependable region-capture foundation and direct control of file or clipboard output.
- Choose Hyprshot for an integrated Hyprland-focused utility with window, region and monitor modes.
- Add Satty or swappy when your workflow needs post-capture annotation.
- Choose Flameshot if a graphical annotation interface matters and portal support is configured.
- Consider HyprCapture or hyprsnap for compositor-oriented recording or more integrated/scripted workflows, after checking current maintenance and package availability.
The cited project documentation does not publish comparable performance, adoption or reliability measurements for these tools, so there is no evidence-based speed winner. In practice, choose based on capture scope, annotation, clipboard/file handling, freezing, portal integration and the number of components you are willing to maintain.
