There is no evidence-backed universal winner for PDF report generation. For teams that want to manage the browser themselves, Playwright offers direct control over rendering and PDF settings. Hosted APIs can reduce browser infrastructure work. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try if you want a hosted screenshot API with PDF options, clean captures, and billing that excludes failed or unusable captures; compare its PDF output with your own reports before committing.
What makes a screenshot API good for PDF reports?
A report PDF is only useful if it preserves the information and layout readers need. A service may advertise URL-to-PDF conversion, but that alone does not establish how it will handle your charts, long tables, web fonts, images, dynamic content, or page breaks. There is no independent, comparable benchmark here that establishes one provider as the fastest, most reliable, or most faithful.
Compare candidates using the same representative report pages and input state. Include a chart, a long table, web fonts, images, a page break, and any content that loads after the initial page render. Check that the output has the intended paper dimensions, margins, background graphics, page range, and print-versus-screen styling. For hosted services, also verify current pricing, quotas, timeouts, data retention, security terms, support, and service guarantees directly with the provider.
Which options should you evaluate?
| Option | What is documented | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | A hosted website screenshot API that can return PDF, with controls for paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges. It also offers clean captures, usage and billing verdict headers, and an MCP server. | Teams wanting a hosted API, report PDF controls, and a way to avoid paying for failed or unusable captures. Confirm the PDF request settings in the ScreenshotNeo documentation and test your own reports. |
| Playwright | Its Page API can generate PDFs and screenshots. PDF generation uses print CSS by default, with configurable paper format, margins, page ranges, background printing, and CSS page sizing. | Teams able to operate browser automation and wanting control over the runtime and PDF-generation code. |
| ScreenshotAPI.net | Its vendor documentation describes PDF rendering from a URL or raw HTML, with page format, orientation, page range, wait/delay behavior, lazy loading, and CSS/JavaScript injection. | Teams looking for a hosted URL- or HTML-to-PDF service and willing to validate the current service terms and output against their reports. |
| ScreenshotAPIs.org | Its guide describes a POST PDF endpoint accepting a URL or HTML and returning PDF bytes, with layout controls, wait strategy, headers/footers, and optional webhook delivery. | Teams evaluating a hosted endpoint, including whether its documented webhook workflow fits their report pipeline. |
These are documented capabilities, not an independent assessment of output quality or service reliability. For vendor details, consult the ScreenshotAPI.net PDF documentation and the ScreenshotAPIs.org guide. Recheck that the endpoints, options, and commercial terms are still available before adoption.

How to generate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright is the self-managed route: your code opens the report in a browser, waits for the page to be ready, sets any required media mode, and asks the page to generate a PDF buffer. The example below uses Node.js and Chromium. Install Playwright and its browser first with npm install playwright and npx playwright install chromium. Save the code as report.mjs, then run node report.mjs.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.env.REPORT_URL;
if (!url) throw new Error('Set REPORT_URL to the report URL');
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 } });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60_000 });
await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' });
await page.pdf({
path: 'report.pdf',
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
preferCSSPageSize: true,
margin: { top: '12mm', right: '12mm', bottom: '12mm', left: '12mm' }
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Set the environment variable to a report URL you control, for example REPORT_URL=https://example.com/report node report.mjs. The URL must be reachable from the machine running the script. If the report requires authentication, arrange access in your own application or browser context; do not put credentials into a URL that might be logged.
Choose print or screen media deliberately
Playwright documents that page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS media by default. If the report was designed to look like its on-screen dashboard rather than a print layout, call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before generating the PDF, as in the example. That choice can change responsive styles, colors, and visibility rules, so inspect the resulting document rather than assuming either mode is correct. See the Playwright Page API for the full set of PDF options.

Set the page geometry and rendering options
The example explicitly chooses A4, margins, background printing, and CSS page sizing. Those are intentional choices, not universal defaults for every report. Pick a format and margins that suit the audience; use landscape when wide tables need the space; and set page ranges when only selected pages belong in the deliverable. With preferCSSPageSize, page sizing specified by the report’s CSS can take precedence, so make sure that is what you want. printBackground includes backgrounds that may otherwise be omitted from print output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a report that loads charts or data asynchronously, a navigation event alone may not mean the report is complete. Wait for a meaningful report-specific selector or application-ready signal before calling page.pdf(). Use a fixed delay only when necessary; it can waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones.
How to compare hosted PDF APIs fairly
- Prepare representative inputs. Use report URLs or HTML that reflect production content, including the longest tables and slowest-loading charts. Keep the data, viewport, and page state consistent between runs.
- Set matching output requirements. Ask each candidate for the same paper size, orientation, margins, background treatment, page range, and media behavior where supported. Record options that a service does not document rather than assuming equivalent behavior.
- Check visual and functional output. Inspect page breaks, clipped columns, loaded images and fonts, chart rendering, text legibility, and whether content is missing. Confirm that the PDF opens and has the expected page count.
- Test failure and scale behavior. Try representative slow or unavailable pages and check how the service reports failures and handles timeouts. Measure your own workload under controlled conditions rather than extrapolating from feature lists.
- Review operating and commercial terms. Confirm current quotas, price, request limits, timeout rules, retention, security, support, and service guarantees with the provider before putting reports or sensitive data through it.
Playwright notes that visual output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A fair comparison therefore holds the environment constant when possible; if you manage Playwright in production, pin and maintain the browser and runtime environment as part of the report pipeline. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

Troubleshooting common PDF problems
The PDF looks different from the browser
Check whether print CSS is hiding or restyling elements, and decide whether screen media is the intended output. Then verify paper dimensions, CSS page sizing, margins, and background printing. For a Playwright comparison, keep the operating system, browser version, settings, and headless mode consistent.
Charts, images, or fonts are missing
The page may still be loading when capture begins, or a resource may not be reachable from the browser environment. Wait for a report-specific ready selector rather than relying only on a generic network condition. Check that the URL can load those resources from the machine or hosted service performing the render.

A table is clipped or breaks awkwardly
Check the paper orientation and width, the page margins, and the report’s print CSS. Try landscape for a genuinely wide report, and adjust page-break rules in the report stylesheet. Test the same settings against the longest production table; a short sample may conceal the problem.
A capture times out or returns an empty report
Distinguish a slow page from one that is blocked, unavailable, or waiting indefinitely for network activity. Check the target page in the same environment, review the service’s timeout and failure reporting, and wait on a specific application-ready condition when possible. Do not treat an empty or failed render as a successful PDF.

Results vary between runs
Dynamic data, changing page state, fonts, browser versions, host machines, and rendering settings can all affect appearance. Stabilize report data and browser assumptions, then compare repeated captures using the same settings. If you depend on reproducible output, make environment maintenance part of the operating plan.

How to choose for your team
- Choose Playwright when direct browser control is worth operating the runtime, and your team can maintain a consistent rendering environment.
- Choose a hosted API when reducing browser infrastructure work is valuable, after validating the PDF output and checking current service, security, and pricing terms.
- Start with ScreenshotNeo if its PDF controls and clean-capture behavior match the workflow; it is the first hosted service to try here because clean shots are billed, failed or unusable captures are not, and its paid entry plan is $5 for 3,000 shots. Treat that as a fit-based recommendation, not a benchmark result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a PDF from raw HTML instead of a published report URL?
Yes for the hosted options whose cited documentation describes HTML input: ScreenshotAPI.net and ScreenshotAPIs.org. Confirm the current request format and limitations in their documentation before building around it.
Does using network idle guarantee every report element has rendered?
No. A page can continue updating after network activity settles, or use application-specific loading behavior. For reports with dynamic content, wait for a meaningful ready condition and inspect the output.
Is a hosted service automatically more reliable than Playwright?
The documented features do not establish that. Reliability depends on the specific service and workload; evaluate failure handling and service guarantees alongside your own controlled output tests.
