The best screen recording software for a webinar depends on what you need afterward. Start with your webinar platform’s native recording when you need the shared presentation and event context; use OBS Studio for configurable desktop, camera, and audio capture; choose a local-track tool such as Riverside when separate participant files are central to editing. Check event compatibility, recording permissions, and the resulting files before the live session.

Choose by the recording you need

Your priority Start with Why
Preserve the webinar’s screen share and available event materials Your webinar host’s native recording For Zoom, cloud recording settings can produce combined or separate speaker, gallery, screen, and participant-audio files, with optional chat and caption outputs.
Control a screen, window, webcam, microphone, and desktop audio in a local recording OBS Studio It is a configurable desktop capture tool, not a webinar platform that creates event-native interaction artifacts.
Edit individual participant recordings Riverside It advertises separate local participant tracks, up to 4K video, and uncompressed audio for business recording.

These tools solve different recording jobs, so there is no universal winner. Decide whether the deliverable is a composed replay, a flexible screen-and-audio file, or separate participant tracks before choosing.

How the main options differ

Zoom computer or cloud recording

If you already host in Zoom, check its native recording options first. Zoom says computer recording is available to free and paid subscribers on supported desktop clients. It is not supported on iOS, iPad, or Android, and an administrator may control whether users can record. Availability of cloud outputs depends on account and recording settings. Zoom’s local recording guidance and cloud recording guidance describe these options.

Cloud recording can preserve screen and speaker views as separate files rather than forcing every editing decision into one composite. Confirm which outputs are enabled and that the account has the required storage before the event; do not assume chat, captions, or every view will be captured by default.

Zoom Recording Studio

Recording Studio is a specific option, not a universal webinar-recording switch. Zoom documents qualifying Webinars Plus or Events licensing, cloud recording, supported desktop clients, storage, and participant local storage as requirements. The support page says webinar event types are unsupported, so confirm the exact event type before relying on it. Zoom Support’s Recording Studio requirements and limitations also state that participant local files can be up to 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Participant local files contain video and audio, but screen shares are included only in the cloud recording, not local files. A participant who quits the client or loses network connectivity may fail to upload a local file. Zoom gives an approximate storage estimate of 2–3 GB per hour at 1080p60; treat that as a support-page planning estimate, not a guaranteed file size.

OBS Studio

OBS Studio is a standalone choice when the operator wants to assemble a recording from a display or window, webcam, desktop audio, and microphone. Its official quick-start guide walks through setting up sources and recommends making a short test recording before the actual session. Plan for someone to configure, monitor, and verify the desktop recording; OBS does not itself create webinar-native chat, caption, or poll-result files. For a useful comparison of the role of standalone capture versus host-platform recording, see Digital Samba’s comparison; its judgments are the publisher’s, not an independent benchmark.

Riverside

Riverside is worth considering when participant tracks and post-production matter more than relying solely on a webinar host’s composed replay. The company advertises separate local participant tracks, video up to 4K, and uncompressed audio for business recording. These are vendor capabilities, not comparative test results; verify current plan fit and availability before purchasing.

Check these details before the event

  • Event type: Confirm the selected feature supports this exact meeting or webinar format. In particular, Zoom documents webinar event types as unsupported for Recording Studio.
  • Permissions: Confirm recording is enabled for the account and user. Ask the administrator whether an account-level policy controls the setting.
  • Capture scope: Decide whether the final edit needs screen share, presenter camera, participant video, desktop audio, microphone, chat, poll results, or captions. Verify each output rather than inferring it from a product name.
  • File layout: Decide whether one composed replay is enough or editors need separate views, participant video, or audio tracks. For Recording Studio, the screen share is cloud-only.
  • Storage and connectivity: Check local disk space, cloud storage quota, supported client and operating system, and network stability—especially when participants must upload local recordings.
  • Guest workflow: Consider how much setup participants must do and who will confirm their recordings uploaded successfully.
  • Participant notice: Decide who is responsible for recording and how participants will be informed. Applicable requirements vary by jurisdiction; consult appropriate local guidance rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.

Make and verify a test recording

  1. Choose the recording path and confirm eligibility. Check the event type, supported client, license, account settings, and administrator controls for the feature you intend to use.
  2. Select the outputs. In the host’s recording settings, enable the views and optional materials you need. For OBS, add the relevant display or window, camera, microphone, and desktop-audio sources.
  3. Check resources. Confirm available cloud storage and local disk space. If using participant local tracks, allow time and connectivity for uploads to complete after the session.
  4. Record a short rehearsal. Speak, play any audio that must be included, share the presentation, and test any transitions that matter.
  5. Review the actual files. Check that the right microphone and desktop audio were captured, that the screen is legible, that separate tracks or views exist as expected, and that the recording is complete and playable.
  6. Assign ownership. Name the person who will start the recording, watch for problems, and confirm cloud processing or local uploads before the event ends.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely reason What to do
Recording control is missing or disabled Recording may be disabled by account settings or administrator policy, or the selected client or device may not support that recording mode. Check account and user recording settings, ask the administrator, and use a supported desktop client. Zoom computer recording is not supported on iOS, iPad, or Android.
The recording lacks the screen share The screen share may not have been included in the chosen output. Recording Studio participant local files do not contain it. Use or verify the cloud screen-share recording for Recording Studio, and review a rehearsal file before the event.
A participant’s local file is missing The participant may have quit the client or lost network connectivity before the local recording uploaded. Check the participant’s client and connection, provide time for upload completion, and verify the file before ending the workflow.
Voice or desktop audio is absent in an OBS file The intended device or source may not be configured or captured. Inspect the audio meters and source/device selection, then make and review another short test recording.
There is not enough storage Local disk or cloud quota may be insufficient for the selected recording outputs and duration. Check available space in advance; for Recording Studio, use Zoom’s approximate 2–3 GB per hour at 1080p60 estimate as a planning reference, not a guarantee.
Tracks or downloads do not match the editing plan The selected product or plan may have different track-download limits or output behavior than expected. Verify the current official plan terms and test the intended workflow before buying or recording a high-stakes session.
