For quick PS5 clips, start with the console’s built-in capture tools. To record console gameplay on a computer, use OBS Studio with a compatible capture device, or capture the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window if your network can carry the video reliably. Switch-family consoles need to be docked for capture-card recording; Switch Lite cannot use that route.
There is no single best option for every player: the right choice depends on whether you want a fast clip or a computer-based recording workflow, and on your console and setup.
Which recording method fits your setup?
| What you need | Best starting point | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A quick PS5 clip without a computer | PS5’s built-in capture tools | Some scenes are blocked from capture; a new recording is limited to one hour. |
| Console footage in a computer recording or stream layout | OBS Studio with a compatible capture device | Requires a capture device and a computer that supports it. |
| Console footage in OBS without a capture device | Capture the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window | Video is sent over the network from console to computer, so a fast, reliable connection matters. |
| Nintendo Switch-family gameplay recorded on a computer | OBS Studio with a capture device while the console is docked | Switch Lite cannot be docked and cannot use this capture-card workflow. |
Native capture and computer recording solve different problems. The console’s own tools are convenient for saving moments; OBS is more suitable when you want a scene layout, separate audio tracks, or recordings kept on a computer for editing. This is a workflow distinction, not a claim based on comparative performance testing.
Record a clip directly on PS5
Start a new recording
- Open the Create menu on the PS5.
- Select Start New Recording to record gameplay. PlayStation Support says, “You can record up to 1 hour of gameplay.”
- When finished, stop the recording and find the saved clip in the console’s media area.
Save gameplay that just happened
- Open the Create menu and select Save Recent Gameplay.
- Choose the segment length. PS5 can save recent gameplay from the last 15 seconds up to one hour.
Set capture format and audio
Open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts to adjust Capture Options, including file format and resolution. The options can also include microphone or voice-chat audio. Ask other people in voice chat before recording their voices; Sony’s audio guidance specifically advises getting their permission. Some scenes cannot be captured, so a blocked scene is a console restriction rather than a recording-software fault. See PlayStation’s PS5 capture guide for the current console workflow.

Record console gameplay on a computer with OBS
OBS Studio can receive console video in either of two ways: from a game capture device added as a Video Capture Source, or from a window showing PS Remote Play or the Xbox app. OBS documents these as console-footage paths for recording or streaming. The app-window method depends on a faster connection between the console and computer to maintain optimal quality.
Option 1: Use a capture device
- Check that the exact capture device supports your console’s video output, your computer’s operating system and connection interface, and the capture resolution and frame rate you want.
- Connect the console’s video output to the capture device and connect the device to the computer. Follow the device maker’s connection instructions for the particular model.
- Open OBS and add the device as a Video Capture Source. Confirm that gameplay appears in the preview.
- Configure OBS’s recording destination and audio sources, then make a short test recording and review both picture and sound before recording a full session.
A capture card is not required for every console recording task. It is useful when you want console video in OBS, a computer-based layout, or an archive for editing. For Switch-family consoles, the console must be docked for this workflow; Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with capture devices in this way.

- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Option 2: Capture the console app window
- Use PS Remote Play or the Xbox app to show the console’s gameplay on the computer.
- In OBS, add a Window Capture source and select the relevant app window.
- Check that the network between the console and computer is fast and stable enough for the video quality you want, then test the recording for dropped frames, delay, or image degradation.
This path avoids a capture device, but it sends gameplay over the console-to-computer network. If the image stutters or loses quality, improve that connection or switch to a capture-device workflow. OBS’s console guidance is at How do I capture footage from my game console?
Choose a capture device by the signal you need
Capture-device specifications can be easy to misread. A device’s maximum passthrough resolution or frame rate describes what it can pass through to a display; it does not automatically mean it records at that same resolution or frame rate. Check the capture modes separately.

- Console compatibility: confirm support for the particular console and its output signal.
- Capture versus passthrough: compare each specification independently, including the resolution and frame rate you intend to record.
- HDR and VRR: check whether the desired HDR or variable refresh rate combination works with the capture mode you plan to use. HDR capture may not be available at every resolution and frame-rate combination.
- Computer requirements: confirm the model’s connection interface and operating-system support.
- Audio: verify how the device handles game audio and any microphone or chat audio you need.
For a concrete example, Elgato lists its Game Capture 4K X as compatible with PS5/Pro, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, and lists OBS among supported apps. Its specifications distinguish passthrough from capture modes and note HDR limitations for some combinations. That makes it an example to evaluate against your requirements, not an independently tested winner. See Elgato Game Capture 4K X specifications. AVerMedia also provides a capture-card selector for recording, streaming and other video-broadcasting scenarios; check the exact model’s compatibility and specifications before buying.
Troubleshoot common recording problems
- OBS shows a blank or missing capture-device picture: confirm the device is connected, selected as the Video Capture Source, and receiving a signal supported by that model. Check the manufacturer’s setup instructions and the console’s video-output settings.
- Remote Play or Xbox app footage stutters in OBS: the app-window route relies on the console-to-computer network. Improve the connection and test again, or use a capture device instead.
- Switch footage does not appear through a capture card: verify that the Switch is docked. Switch Lite cannot use the dock-dependent capture-device route.
- OBS preview appears, but the recording lacks audio: check that the intended audio sources are enabled and captured in OBS, then make a short test recording. If recording voice chat, ask participants before including their voices.
- A PS5 scene will not record: some scenes are blocked from capture. Try saving a different gameplay segment rather than assuming the software is broken.
- Recorded quality is lower than expected: compare the capture mode—not just passthrough—with the resolution and frame rate you intended, and check HDR support for that exact combination.
