The best app depends on what you need after recording: choose Loom to share a link quickly, ScreenPal to record and make simple edits in one place, StreamYard for a screen-and-camera presentation you can repurpose into vertical clips, or OBS Studio for configurable local capture. These are workflow matches, not results from a head-to-head speed or quality test.

Choose an app by the video you need to publish

Your priority Best fit Why it fits Check before you start
Send someone a recording link Loom Loom says it creates a share link after recording and lists desktop, iOS, and Android availability. Its Starter plan page lists a limit of 25 videos per member; check the current plan terms before relying on it.
Record, edit, and share a straightforward video ScreenPal ScreenPal describes its free workflow as including recording, editing, sharing, and hosted videos. The free recorder is listed for recordings up to 15 minutes each. Limits and paid features can change.
Present on camera while demonstrating a screen, then make social clips StreamYard StreamYard’s own comparison describes screen-and-camera layouts, local tracks, and a vertical repurposing workflow. This is the vendor’s description of its product, not an independent comparative test.
Control local recording sources and settings OBS Studio OBS is described as offering substantial capture control. Its setup is more technical than a quick-start recorder, so it is a better fit if you are comfortable configuring a recording workflow.
Adjust a finished recording’s edit or export CapCut, after capture CapCut’s help describes export choices that can include 2K or 4K on supported configurations. It is an editing/export option in this comparison, not a recommended screen-capture app. Export choices vary by device and source.

What to compare before choosing

  • End result: Decide whether you need a shareable link or a downloaded video you can edit and upload yourself.
  • Presenter framing: If your face needs to appear alongside the screen, check whether the recording workflow offers the layouts you want. For clips, plan the final vertical framing before you record.
  • Setup effort: A tool with many controls may suit recurring, carefully configured recordings; it may not be the fastest way to make a one-off explainer.
  • Plan limits: Confirm the current recording length, video allowance, editing features, and hosting terms for the plan you intend to use.
  • Export requirements: Check resolution and format options on the device you will actually edit and publish from. The available sources do not establish a uniform, independent benchmark across these apps.

How the main options fit different social-video workflows

Loom: record and share a link

Loom is a natural fit when the immediate goal is to send a walkthrough or demo by link rather than manage a local editing workflow. Its product page says the link is ready to copy after recording, and lists desktop, iOS, and Android support. Loom’s Starter plan page lists 25 videos per member, so do not assume the free option is unlimited. See Loom’s screen recorder and plan details.

ScreenPal: capture with simple editing

ScreenPal’s plans page describes a free workflow with recording up to 15 minutes at a time, editing, sharing, and unlimited hosted videos. It lists unlimited recording time and automated captions among upgrade features. Those are plan-page statements, not a guarantee that every feature is available on every device or under unchanged terms; review the current plan details before building a workflow around them. Check ScreenPal’s plans.

StreamYard: screen plus camera for presenter-led clips

StreamYard’s comparison presents its product as a browser-based studio for recording a screen with a camera, controlling layouts, saving local tracks, and turning recordings into vertical cutdowns. That makes it worth considering when the presenter is part of the video and the recording may be reused as social clips. Because the comparison is authored by StreamYard, treat those capabilities as the vendor’s description rather than independent test findings. Read StreamYard’s comparison.

OBS Studio: configurable local capture

OBS is a stronger fit when you want control over local recording sources and settings and are willing to spend time configuring them. The cited comparison and editorial roundup both characterize it as powerful but more technical for novice creators; the available evidence does not establish that it is the fastest or best-quality choice for everyone. Visit OBS Project.

CapCut: an editing and export step, not the capture recommendation here

CapCut’s help guidance describes desktop export choices of 2K (2560×1440) and 4K (3840×2160) when the project and device support them. It says mobile resolution options depend on hardware, source media, region, and app version. The guidance is current as of January 2026; check the options shown in your own version rather than assuming a resolution will be available for every recording. Review CapCut’s export guidance.

Make a screen recording easier to publish

Before recording

  • Write down the single action or idea the clip needs to explain, then close unrelated windows and notifications that could distract from it.
  • Decide whether the finished video will be horizontal or vertical. If you need a vertical social clip from a screen demonstration, keep essential text and controls near the center so a later crop is less likely to cut them off.
  • Check whether the app captures system audio, microphone audio, or both, and select the sources needed for your explanation.

While recording

  • Move the pointer deliberately and pause briefly on important controls so viewers can follow the demonstration.
  • Speak in short steps; if you make a mistake, pause and repeat the sentence or action so it is easier to trim later.
  • A USB microphone is an optional way to record narration. The available comparison discusses separate microphone and screen-audio controls, but it does not establish a best microphone model.

After recording

  • Trim dead air and repeated actions, and make sure any on-screen text remains legible in the intended crop.
  • Review the final clip with sound on and off: narration should be clear, while captions or visible labels should carry the key point for viewers watching silently.
  • Check the exported file on the device and platform where you plan to publish it. Export options depend on the editor, device, source media, region, and app version.

Common snags and what to check

  • The free plan will not cover the recording: Check the app’s current per-recording time and account/video limits before starting a long walkthrough. ScreenPal lists up to 15 minutes per free recording; Loom’s Starter page lists 25 videos per member.
  • Your face or screen is framed poorly in a vertical clip: Revisit the layout and crop before recording, or use a workflow designed around screen-and-camera layouts and vertical repurposing. StreamYard describes such a workflow in its own comparison.
  • The export menu does not show the resolution you expected: Check project resolution, original footage, hardware capability, region, OS, and app version. CapCut specifically notes that these factors affect available export choices.
  • The result takes longer than the recording: If sharing a link is enough, a link-first tool such as Loom may avoid a separate download-and-edit step. If you need detailed local control, OBS offers a different trade-off and more setup.
