For a fixed home, begin with Starlink Residential and compare the address-qualified Viasat and Hughesnet offers available at your service address. For an RV or other mobile land setup, Starlink Roam is the relevant category. For a boat on inland or coastal waters, Roam may fit; regular international or ocean passages generally require checking Ocean Mode rules or choosing Starlink Maritime. Your real cost depends on the address, country, data tier, hardware, mounting and, for marine use, any priority-data or ocean charges.

Prices and tier names shown on provider pages can differ by market and account. The figures below are captures from 2026 pages, not a universal rate card, so use the provider’s address or checkout eligibility tool before ordering.

Quick recommendations by use case

Your situation Best starting category Why it fits Important qualification
Primary residence or vacation home at one address Starlink Residential It is the household service category and is simpler than a mobility plan when the dish stays at one location. Residential is not authorized for in-motion use. Prices, speed tiers and availability are address-dependent.
RV, camper, van or nomadic land travel Starlink Roam Roam is designed for travel, can be paused or placed on Standby on listed plans, and has plans intended for use away from one fixed address. Movement, in-motion operation and coverage remain subject to the plan’s policy, local regulation and network availability.
Inland or coastal boat trips Starlink Roam, after checking water coverage Roam is described for coastal and inland waterways and can be a practical option for a movable, smaller boat. Do not assume Roam covers every offshore route. Confirm Ocean Mode rules and the countries or waters where you will operate.
Regular international or open-ocean passages Starlink Maritime Maritime is designed for global ocean coverage and network priority rather than occasional coastal mobility. It is a different cost category; the captured 2026 page lists a $2,150 monthly plan and volatile priority-data terms.

What to compare before choosing a plan

1. Service location and mobility

A home plan is tied to a service address. A mobile plan is intended to move, but that does not mean every country, sea lane or in-motion situation is authorized. Check the service map and the terms for the exact countries, waters and vehicle or vessel use you have planned. Residential should be treated as stationary service; Starlink’s cited support policy does not authorize it while the vehicle or vessel is moving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. What “unlimited” means

Unlimited can describe different things. A plan may provide unlimited high-speed data, a high-speed allowance followed by unlimited lower-speed data, or priority data that is used first and then continues at a reduced rate. Roam 100GB and 300GB captures describe high-speed data followed by unlimited low-speed data. Starlink Maritime’s captured offer describes priority data and continued service of up to 1 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps upload after the priority allowance is exhausted. Read the current plan language rather than comparing the word unlimited alone.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Network priority and congestion

Residential, Roam and Maritime tiers do not have identical priority or performance conditions. A mobile or marine plan can be worth the premium when access in busy areas or at sea matters more than the lowest monthly bill. Viasat also says congestion can reduce priority for Unleashed and Unleashed Max customers whose usage trends above typical usage.

4. Total installed cost

Budget for the recurring service plus the terminal, router or power equipment, shipping, installation, a permanent mount, cable routing, adapters and any marine priority-data or ocean charges. A low introductory rate can be more expensive over a year if it requires a costly installation or changes after the introductory period.

Best satellite internet plans for a fixed home

Starlink Residential: the default starting point

Residential is the household category for a dish that remains at one address. It is the clearest first comparison for a house, cabin or other fixed property where you do not need the account to follow you. Do not select it for an RV or boat simply because its monthly price is lower: the cited Starlink policy does not authorize in-motion use, and the service is not the mobility category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starlink’s 2026 captures show why an address check is essential. Different pages list Residential Lite at $80 per month, Residential at $120 per month, Residential 100 Mbps at $55, Residential 200 Mbps at $85 and Residential Max at $130. These are not five universally available tiers; they are market- and account-dependent captures. A checkout result for your address is the authoritative offer.

Viasat: compare the allowance and the introductory period

Viasat offer shown on the 2026 page High-speed or priority treatment Captured price and qualification
Essentials 150GB of high-speed data, then unlimited standard data Starting at $39.99 per month for the first 12 months; availability check required.
Unleashed Plan behavior and priority depend on the address and current terms; congestion can reduce priority for users whose usage trends above typical usage. Starting at $69.99 per month introductory pricing; availability check required.
Unleashed Max Higher-tier option, still subject to the provider’s congestion policy. Starting at $109.99 per month introductory pricing; availability check required.

The same page shows a $99.99 per month standard starting price. It does not establish that every address or every plan converts to that exact amount, so confirm the post-introductory price in the offer presented for your address. Essentials is easiest to evaluate when you can live with a defined high-speed allowance followed by standard data; households that stream or upload heavily should examine the allowance and congestion language before switching.

Hughesnet: check whether your use fits its data model

Hughesnet’s own guidance says it is not recommended as a full-time streaming replacement or for console gaming because those activities quickly consume Priority Data. That makes Hughesnet worth considering only after you understand the included priority allowance, the speed after it is used and your household’s actual video, gaming, backup and work traffic. Ask for the complete address-specific offer rather than assuming a generic national plan.

Home buying checklist

  1. Enter the exact service address on each provider’s availability page. Rural availability, plan names, speeds and prices can differ even between nearby addresses.
  2. Write down the recurring price after any introductory period, the included high-speed or priority allowance and what happens after it is exhausted.
  3. Add the terminal, installation, cable route and any roof, pole or wall mount to the first-year cost.
  4. List your peak activities—video calls, streaming, cloud backup, software updates and gaming—and compare them with the provider’s data behavior.
  5. Choose Residential when the terminal will stay put; choose a mobility category only when you genuinely need travel authorization.

Best satellite internet plans for RVs and mobile land travel

Why Roam is the relevant category

Starlink Roam is designed for RVs, campers, nomads and travel. The provider’s product language states: “In-motion use is supported with all our Roam service plans.” That statement still carries the surrounding conditions: operation must be in an authorized location, comply with policy and regulation, and remain within coverage. It is not permission to drive or sail anywhere without checking the current terms.

Roam plans can be paused or placed on Standby when that feature is listed for the plan. Pausing can make seasonal travel cheaper than paying for a home-style service all year, but verify whether the current plan exposes Standby, how billing works during the pause and whether reactivation timing matters for your trips.

Roam price and allowance captures

2026 Starlink capture Plans and monthly figures shown How to interpret it
Roam page capture Roam 50GB: $80/month; Roam Unlimited: $160/month A page-specific offer; not a universal global price.
Separate service-plan capture Roam 50GB: $50/month; Roam Unlimited: $165/month Different figures for the same named tiers demonstrate market or account variation.
Another current capture Roam 100GB: $55/month; Roam 300GB: $80/month; Roam Unlimited: $175/month Shows that allowance names and prices can change by market or account.

Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB descriptions in the captured pages say that the high-speed allowance is followed by unlimited low-speed data. The captures do not establish one universal reduced speed, so do not promise a particular post-allowance performance. If your work depends on large uploads, video meetings or frequent streaming, compare the allowance with your monthly usage and consider the cost of moving to a higher tier.

Mini or Standard for an RV

Starlink Mini is the portable, DC-capable option and is easier to carry between campsites or power from a suitable vehicle system. Standard is a conventional home-style kit with a separate router and power equipment; it can be a better fit when the dish will remain mounted on the RV and you want a more permanent installation. Neither choice removes the need for a clear view of the sky.

RV mounting and power decisions

  • Use a temporary placement only when it gives the terminal a clear sky view and you can protect the cable from tires, doors and sharp edges.
  • For a permanent roof installation, plan the mount and cable route before drilling. Starlink says permanent mounts designed to avoid obstructions are available through its shop after ordering.
  • Confirm your vehicle’s DC capacity, inverter losses and battery reserve. A portable terminal that fits in a backpack can still be a substantial continuous electrical load.
  • If trees, roof accessories or neighboring vehicles block the sky, expect interruptions; moving the terminal or raising it on a suitable mount can matter more than changing plans.

RV setup sequence

  1. Use the address or travel eligibility checker to confirm that the Roam plan is sold for your account and intended destinations.
  2. Choose Mini or Standard after measuring storage space, mounting points, cable distance and available AC or DC power.
  3. At camp, place or mount the terminal with the clearest practical sky view; keep the cable connector dry and protected.
  4. Connect the supplied power equipment, start the terminal and complete activation through the provider’s current app or account instructions.
  5. Before driving, stop service or stow the equipment unless your exact Roam plan and location are authorized for in-motion operation. Secure every loose component.
  6. When the RV is stored, use Standby or pause only if that control is shown on your plan and note the date you intend to reactivate.

Best satellite internet plans for boats

Inland and coastal cruising: evaluate Roam first

Starlink describes Roam for coastal and inland waterways, making it the first category to investigate for a lake boat, river craft or coastal cruiser that returns to land frequently. You still need to check the waters and countries covered by the current service rules. A plan that works at a marina does not automatically authorize an offshore passage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ocean crossings: when Maritime becomes the relevant comparison

For regular international or open-ocean travel, compare the Ocean Mode rules for your Roam account and Starlink Maritime rather than assuming a coastal plan will continue offshore. Maritime is designed for global ocean coverage and network priority, which addresses a different operating requirement from occasional coastal mobility.

A captured 2026 Starlink Maritime page lists a plan at $2,150 per month with ocean and global land use. It says that after priority data is exhausted, service can continue at up to 1 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps upload. Treat both the price and the allowance as especially volatile: marine terms can change, and the checkout offer for the vessel’s account and operating area controls.

Marine mounting, motion and obstruction planning

A boat introduces constant pitch, roll, spray, salt, vibration and changing obstructions. West Marine lists Starlink-compatible pipe-adapter, wedge, pole-mount and other marine accessories, and positions Mini for smaller or movable boats. A wedge or pole arrangement can be preferable to leaving a terminal loose on deck, but the mount must be appropriate for the hull, structure and cable route.

  • Identify a location with the widest practical sky view while accounting for masts, rails, sails, antennas and nearby structures.
  • Keep connectors and power equipment away from standing water and route cables so they cannot chafe or become trip hazards.
  • Check the terminal’s environmental and mounting requirements in the current hardware documentation before exposing it to spray or permanent outdoor service.
  • Confirm whether the plan permits in-motion operation in the waters where you will travel. Roam’s in-motion statement does not override geographic, regulatory or coverage limits.
  • For a vessel relying on service offshore, calculate battery or generator demand and keep an independent navigation and emergency-communication method.

Boat setup sequence

  1. Map the intended route and distinguish marina, inland, coastal and open-ocean segments. Check the current Roam, Ocean Mode and Maritime eligibility for each segment.
  2. Select the terminal and marine mount together. A small movable boat may favor Mini; a permanently installed vessel may need a robust wedge, pipe or pole solution.
  3. Dry-fit the mount and cable path, checking for swing, snagging, spray exposure and obstructions before making permanent holes.
  4. Install the mount to the vessel structure using hardware suitable for the surface and follow the terminal’s current installation instructions.
  5. Connect protected power, activate the account and verify service while stationary in a safe location before departure.
  6. Test the service on the route only within the plan’s authorized coverage and in-motion conditions; switch to Maritime when the voyage requires its ocean coverage and priority model.

Hardware comparison: Mini versus Standard

Hardware Published specifications or contents Best fit Trade-offs to plan for
Starlink Mini US page lists a $199 starting price, up to 300+ Mbps, average power use of 25–40W and a backpack-sized portable design. The specification sheet lists a 2.89kg package and includes a pipe adapter and flat mount. Portable RV use, seasonal travel and smaller or movable boats where DC-capable, compact equipment matters. Portable placement still needs a clear sky view; permanent marine or roof installations may need a more suitable mount and weather-conscious cable routing.
Starlink Standard The cited specifications list a dish, kickstand, Gen 3 router, 15m Starlink cable, AC cable and power supply. Starlink says the kit arrives with everything needed to get online in minutes. Fixed homes and RVs or boats where a conventional router and a permanent installation are preferable. Separate power equipment and a larger fixed-installation footprint can increase mounting, cable-routing and power-planning work.

The listed kit contents do not mean every mount or installation tool is included. Starlink says permanent obstruction-avoidance mounts are available through its shop after ordering, while marine retailers list additional wedge, pipe-adapter and pole options. Confirm compatibility with the exact terminal generation and region before buying an accessory.

How data policy changes the real-world experience

High-speed allowance followed by lower speed

Roam’s 100GB and 300GB captures use this model: you receive the stated high-speed amount, then continue with unlimited low-speed data. That can be adequate for messaging, light browsing and telemetry but frustrating for large software updates, cloud backups or sustained video. The exact reduced speed is not stated in those captures and should be checked in the current plan terms.

Priority data at sea

Maritime is presented as a priority-data service for ocean and global land use. Once the priority allowance is exhausted, the captured page says service may continue at up to 1 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up. Treat that as a ceiling stated by the page, not a guaranteed speed in every location or weather condition.

Congestion on Viasat plans

Viasat says congestion can reduce priority for Unleashed and Unleashed Max users whose usage trends above typical usage. If several people stream, back up photos and download games at the same time, compare the provider’s priority language—not only the headline monthly price.

Activities that can consume an allowance quickly

  • 4K or multiple simultaneous video streams.
  • Console game downloads and updates.
  • Continuous cloud-camera recording or large off-site backups.
  • Operating-system images, virtual-machine files and other multi-gigabyte downloads.
  • Frequent video uploads from an RV or boat.

Build a realistic first-year budget

Usage-related charges Overage, standard-data or congestion effects in the selected plan Reduced speed after the high-speed allowance, if applicable Priority-data exhaustion, ocean terms or any pay-per-GB charges shown at checkout

Add the one-time hardware and installation costs to twelve months of the actual post-introductory service price. For seasonal RV use, calculate the cost of active months plus any reactivation or Standby terms instead of assuming a pause always makes the plan cheaper.

A practical decision process

  1. Fix the operating address or route. One home address points toward Residential; a moving land setup points toward Roam; a planned ocean crossing requires an Ocean Mode or Maritime comparison.
  2. Mark where movement is required. If the terminal must operate while driving or underway, remove Residential from consideration and verify the exact Roam or Maritime authorization.
  3. Estimate monthly data. Separate ordinary browsing and email from streaming, backups, game downloads and video uploads. Compare that estimate with each high-speed or priority allowance.
  4. Choose a terminal and power method. Mini favors portability and DC use; Standard favors a conventional router and more permanent installation.
  5. Design the mount before ordering accessories. Obstructions, cable length and structural attachment often determine reliability more than the plan name.
  6. Verify the checkout offer. Record the monthly price, introductory duration, speed or allowance, after-allowance behavior, pause rules and any regional restrictions.
  7. Keep a fallback for critical communications. Satellite internet should not be your only navigation or emergency link on a vessel, and an RV traveler should plan for areas outside authorized coverage.

Assuming one advertised price applies everywhere

2026 Starlink captures show the same named Roam and Residential tiers at different prices and with different allowance labels. Viasat’s figures also distinguish introductory and standard pricing. Treat checkout for your address or account as the source of truth.

Confusing unlimited low-speed data with unlimited high-speed service

After a high-speed allowance, a connection may continue but perform very differently. Ask what speed, priority and restrictions apply after the allowance rather than relying on the word unlimited.

Ignoring obstructions

Trees, roof fixtures, masts and sails can interrupt a satellite link. Test the clearest practical location before committing to a permanent mount, and raise or relocate the terminal when the installation blocks its view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving a mobile terminal unsecured

Driving vibration, wind and vessel motion can damage a dish, connector or cable. Stow the equipment for travel unless your exact plan and location authorize in-motion use, and use a properly designed mount for permanent installations.

Budgeting only for the monthly bill

Mounts, installation, power conversion, cable routing and marine protection can exceed the difference between two service tiers. Include them in the first-year comparison.

Bottom line

Choose Starlink Residential for a stationary home, Starlink Roam for an RV or authorized coastal/inland mobility, and Starlink Maritime when an ocean-going vessel needs global coverage and priority service. Compare Viasat or Hughesnet at the exact home address when their allowance and pricing fit better. Because 2026 plan names, prices and data rules vary by market and account, verify the complete checkout offer—including post-allowance behavior, mobility authorization, hardware and mounting costs—before paying.
