For one place to browse and launch a multi-system collection across Windows, Linux, and Steam Deck, ES-DE is the strongest starting point supported by the available official documentation. If you want games to appear as individual entries in Steam instead, use Steam ROM Manager. On Steam Deck, EmuDeck can help configure both: ES-DE is the collection frontend, while Steam ROM Manager creates Steam library shortcuts.
These tools solve different problems, so there is no single winner for every workflow. The comparison below focuses on their documented roles and platform support, rather than claiming a ranking of every ROM-management option.
How the three tools differ
| Tool | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| ES-DE | A frontend for browsing and launching games in a multi-platform collection. It offers controller navigation, themes, and built-in scraping for game information and media. The project lists support for over 150 game systems. | Organizing a large collection in a dedicated interface. |
| Steam ROM Manager | Uses parsers to add ROMs, emulators, and tools as non-Steam shortcuts in Steam. In EmuDeck’s documented workflow, it can retrieve artwork during parsing and save entries to Steam. | Launching games as individual items in Steam’s library. |
| EmuDeck | An installation and configuration script for emulation tools that creates an organized Emulation folder. Its workflow includes ES-DE and Steam ROM Manager; it is not itself the collection frontend. | Setting up an emulation environment on SteamOS/Linux or Windows. |
ES-DE calls itself “a frontend for browsing and launching games from your multi-platform collection.” EmuDeck describes itself as “an installation script that helps you get started with emulation.”
Which one should you choose?
Choose ES-DE for a unified collection frontend
Use ES-DE if you want to browse and launch games from a dedicated interface instead of filling Steam’s library with a separate shortcut for every game. The ES-DE project lists Windows portable and installer downloads, Linux x64 and ARM64 AppImages, and an AppImage specifically for Steam Deck and Steam Machine. Its features include controller navigation, customizable themes, and scraping for images, videos, and manuals. The project describes its Windows, macOS, and Linux releases as free and open source.

Choose Steam ROM Manager for Steam library entries
Steam ROM Manager is the better fit when you want selected games or tools to appear directly in Steam. It parses files using configured systems and emulator options, then saves shortcuts to the Steam library. EmuDeck’s guide also documents adding ES-DE itself through Steam ROM Manager, so the two approaches can be combined rather than treated as alternatives.
Choose EmuDeck for guided setup
EmuDeck is useful when you want an installation and configuration route for an emulation setup rather than only a frontend or shortcut tool. Its documentation describes support for Windows and Linux/SteamOS and an organized Emulation folder. It can be configured for internal SSD or SD card storage. Availability and workflow can change with releases; the platform statements here reflect EmuDeck documentation accessed October 4, 2026.

Platform support and current version
As of October 4, 2026, the ES-DE project page lists version 3.5.0, released September 30, 2026. Its downloads include Windows, Linux, and a Steam Deck-specific AppImage, making its documented platform coverage explicit. EmuDeck’s documentation also covers Windows and Linux/SteamOS, though it serves a different role from ES-DE.
ES-DE advertises support for over 150 game systems. That is the project’s stated compatibility figure, not a comparative test of how well different managers perform on those systems.

Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Compare them by the job you need done
- Library experience: ES-DE presents a browsable collection in one frontend; Steam ROM Manager creates individual shortcuts in Steam.
- Collection size: EmuDeck recommends ES-DE for large libraries. Its Steam ROM Manager guide advises enabling only the parser needed for newly added games when updating entries.
- Artwork and presentation: ES-DE includes a scraper and supports themes, images, videos, and manuals. In EmuDeck’s Steam ROM Manager workflow, artwork is sourced from SteamGridDB.
- Setup and storage: EmuDeck organizes files in an Emulation folder and documents SD card and internal SSD storage options. ES-DE can also be downloaded directly for its listed platforms.
Setup notes and common pitfalls
When using Steam ROM Manager through EmuDeck
- Put ROM files in the expected system folders and use formats appropriate to the system.
- Enable the parser that matches the games and emulator setup you intend to add. Multiple parsers for the same system can generate duplicate Steam entries.
- Use Steam ROM Manager’s exceptions list to hide games you do not want included.
- If artwork is missing, check whether the SteamGridDB connection is available; the EmuDeck guide identifies connectivity as a possible cause.
When using ES-DE through EmuDeck
EmuDeck’s ES-DE guide says games are autodetected at startup. In the setup it documents, artwork is not displayed by default; scraping may take minutes to hours depending on collection size. Treat that timing as setup guidance, not a guaranteed duration for every device or library.
ROMs, BIOS files, and legal responsibility
EmuDeck does not provide ROMs or BIOS files; users must supply their own. Its documentation notes that emulation law varies by country and gives the general rule that downloading games you do not own is not legal. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so this is not a country-specific legal determination.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
