The most effective ROG Ally X battery settings are the lowest Armoury Crate SE power profile that still holds your game’s target frame rate, 60 Hz for games that do not need 120 Hz, comfortable-but-reduced brightness, short Windows screen-off and sleep timers, and Battery Care Mode when the device is plugged in for long periods.
One important correction comes first: ASUS’s official 2024 ROG Ally X (model RC72LA) specification lists a 7-inch 1920×1080 display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 500-nit brightness. ASUS does not identify that panel as OLED. If a retailer or another device uses “ROG Ally X OLED,” verify the exact model before applying these settings; refresh-rate controls, firmware labels and battery behavior can differ.
What the ROG Ally X battery settings actually control
The Ally X uses an 80 Wh battery. ASUS describes this as double the capacity of the previous model, but capacity alone does not determine how long one charge lasts. The game’s workload, frame-rate target, operating profile, display brightness, refresh rate, wireless activity, vibration and connected accessories all affect total draw.
Armoury Crate SE exposes the controls that matter most: operating modes, performance controls, GameVisual, updates and Battery Care. Windows power settings add the screen-off and sleep timers. Treat these as a coordinated system rather than looking for one “battery saver” switch.

Armoury Crate reports BATT Power as total system power, not just the processor’s consumption. ASUS’s definition includes the display and other system components, including vibration motors. Consequently, a lower power limit can help, but so can dimming the screen, disabling unused lighting and disconnecting accessories.
First verify which Ally X you own
The official 2024 RC72LA baseline
- Display: 7-inch FHD, 1920×1080
- Maximum refresh rate: 120 Hz
- Rated brightness: 500 nits
- Battery: 80 Wh
Those specifications describe the 2024 ROG Ally X. They do not describe an OLED panel. “OLED” may be a retailer naming error or a reference to another, newer product. Check the model number on the device label, its original packaging or the MyASUS system-information page. Do not assume that a setting guide for another model has the same battery capacity or display controls.
Why the distinction matters for battery advice
A different display technology or model may expose different refresh-rate choices, brightness behavior and firmware controls. The recommendations below are written for the official 2024 Ally X specification. If your device is not the RC72LA model, use the same principles but confirm the available modes and battery information in Armoury Crate SE.
The best starting profile for most games
Start with the lowest Armoury Crate SE operating profile that maintains the frame rate you actually want. This is more reliable than selecting the highest mode and trying to compensate elsewhere.
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open the current game profile or the operating-mode control.
- Begin with the lower-power profile, commonly labelled Silent.
- Launch the game and play a representative section, including a busy area rather than only a menu or opening scene.
- If the game misses its target frame rate, stutters or takes too long to load assets, move up one profile level.
- Stop at the first profile that delivers stable play. Raising power beyond that point spends battery without improving the experience.
Light 2D games, older titles and games capped at modest frame rates often need less power than demanding 3D releases. A single profile cannot be optimal for every workload, so save per-game profiles when Armoury Crate SE permits it.
60 Hz or 120 Hz on battery?
Use 60 Hz when the game does not benefit from 120 Hz. The Ally X panel supports 120 Hz, but a lower refresh target can reduce display and rendering work in suitable games. The amount saved depends on the title, frame-rate cap, brightness and operating profile; ASUS does not publish a controlled percentage saving for this particular combination, so treat it as a setting to test rather than a guaranteed result.
Choose 60 Hz when
- The game is capped at 60 frames per second or below.
- The title is turn-based, strategy-focused, narrative-driven or otherwise not dependent on very smooth camera motion.
- You are travelling and prefer predictable endurance over maximum responsiveness.
- The game rarely reaches 120 frames per second even in its lightest scenes.
Keep 120 Hz when
- You are playing a fast action, competitive or scrolling game where motion clarity matters.
- The title can sustain a frame rate high enough to make the extra refresh headroom visible.
- Switching to 60 Hz makes controls or camera movement feel noticeably less responsive.
How to test the difference
- Set the same Armoury Crate operating profile and in-game frame-rate cap for both tests.
- Play the same section for a similar length of time at 120 Hz.
- Switch to 60 Hz and repeat the section under the same conditions.
- Compare frame-time stability, fan noise and the battery percentage or BATT Power reading, rather than judging from a short menu sequence.
Do not change brightness, graphics quality and power mode at the same time. Isolating one variable tells you whether the refresh-rate change helps your particular game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBrightness: the simplest display adjustment
Lower the screen to the dimmest level that remains comfortable in your environment. ASUS states that BATT Power includes the display, so brightness changes affect total system draw. The 500-nit panel can be useful in bright rooms, but running at maximum brightness indoors wastes energy if you can read the image clearly at a lower level.
A practical brightness routine
- Set brightness while standing where you normally play, not under a bright showroom light.
- Lower it until dark scenes remain readable without eye strain.
- Raise it temporarily for direct sunlight or a brightly lit room.
- Return to the lower level when you move back indoors.
Brightness is workload-independent: it can reduce consumption even when the game itself is already using the lowest practical operating profile. That makes it one of the few adjustments that benefits almost every title.
Operating profiles: Silent, higher-power modes and Manual
The correct wattage is the minimum that maintains your chosen frame rate. There is no single wattage that is best for every game, and the cited ASUS guidance does not establish a universal battery-runtime figure for Silent, Manual or any fixed power limit.

Silent mode
Use Silent first for lightweight games, emulation workloads that are not processor-heavy, older 3D titles and games capped at 30 or 60 frames per second. If performance is stable, remaining in Silent avoids unnecessary power and fan activity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Higher-power performance modes
Move to the next available performance profile when a game cannot hold its target frame rate, exhibits repeated stutter or suffers from long shader-compilation pauses that are resolved by additional power. Select only the level that fixes the problem. A higher setting can increase performance, but it also increases heat, fan noise and battery draw.
Manual mode
Manual mode is useful when you want to tune the Ally X for one demanding game instead of accepting a broad preset. Change one control at a time, test the same game section, and keep the lowest setting that meets your target. Avoid copying a wattage value from another game or another owner: different engines and frame-rate caps can need very different power.
When a higher profile is actually more efficient
A demanding game may render poorly at an overly low limit, taking longer to complete each frame while the system remains busy for a longer period. If a modest increase produces stable performance and lets you cap the frame rate, it can be a better experience than forcing an unplayable low-power setting. The decision should be based on sustained play, not a momentary peak frame rate.
Recommended settings by workload
| Workload | Starting profile | Refresh rate | Brightness | Frame-rate approach | Runtime expectation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2D, puzzle and older games | Silent | 60 Hz unless motion clearly benefits from 120 Hz | Lowest comfortable level | Use the game’s 30- or 60-fps cap if available | Usually lower system demand, but no fixed hours are established |
| Indie 3D and moderate games | Start Silent; raise one level only if needed | 60 Hz for a 60-fps target | Lowest comfortable level | Prioritize a stable cap over an uncapped peak | Varies with scene complexity and settings |
| Demanding modern 3D games | Use the lowest profile that holds the target; test Manual only when necessary | 60 Hz for a 60-fps target, 120 Hz when high-refresh motion is a priority | Lowest comfortable level | Reduce the target or graphics load before raising power indefinitely | Higher draw is expected; ASUS does not publish a fixed runtime for a settings combination |
| Desktop, video and non-gaming use | Lower-power profile | 60 Hz is generally sufficient for ordinary tasks | Lowest comfortable level | Allow Windows to sleep when idle | Depends on radios, peripherals, updates and screen-on time |
Shorten Windows screen-off and sleep timers
When the Ally X is sitting idle, a bright screen can consume power even though no game is rendering. ASUS recommends turning the display off after a few minutes when not in use and enabling automatic sleep.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to System and then Power & battery.
- Open Screen and sleep.
- Choose a short screen-off period for battery operation.
- Set an automatic sleep period for longer inactivity.
Choose intervals that do not interrupt reading or downloads you intentionally leave running. The goal is to prevent accidental hours of screen-on time, not to force sleep during normal use.
Turn off components you are not using
Because BATT Power covers more than the APU, unused accessories and features add avoidable load. Disable them when practical:
- Turn off keyboard or chassis lighting when it is not needed.
- Disable vibration if you do not use haptic feedback.
- Switch off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you are not using an online connection or wireless accessory.
- Disconnect USB devices, external drives and other peripherals that draw power.
- Close launchers, synchronisation tools and background applications that keep the processor or network active.
Wireless radios should not be disabled during an online game that needs them. Likewise, disconnecting a device that you need is not a battery-saving victory; use the feature when it provides a real benefit.
Battery Care Mode: protection, not extra capacity
Battery Care Mode limits charging to 80% to reduce battery wear. Use it when the Ally X spends much of its time connected to a charger, such as on a desk or dock. It helps preserve long-term battery health; it does not increase the charge available for the current unplugged session.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Running 120 Hz for a 60-fps game
A 120 Hz panel is useful, but a 60-fps title does not automatically need a 120 Hz refresh target. Test 60 Hz with the same frame-rate cap and keep 120 Hz only when the smoother response is worth the additional work for your use.
Using the highest power mode for every title
Maximum performance is not the same as maximum efficiency. Start low and increase only when the game demonstrates a real performance problem.
Expecting Battery Care Mode to last longer today
The 80% limit protects long-term battery condition; it reduces the charge stored for the immediate session. Do not use it when you specifically need maximum one-session capacity.
Dimming the screen until it is uncomfortable
Battery savings are not useful if you strain to read the display. Raise brightness until text and dark scenes are comfortable, then stop.
Comparing runtime from different games
A menu, a video sequence and a busy open-world scene have different loads. Compare settings within the same game and a similar section. ASUS does not publish a controlled runtime result for this exact settings combination, so avoid treating another player’s hours as a guarantee.
Changing several variables at once
If you change power mode, refresh rate, brightness and graphics quality together, you cannot tell which adjustment helped. Change one variable, test, and record the result.
How to decide whether a setting is worth keeping
Judge a battery setting against three outcomes: stable performance, acceptable comfort and lower observed draw. A setting that saves power but causes repeated stutter is not a good gaming setting. A setting that looks efficient but forces maximum brightness because the image is hard to see may also erase its benefit.

- Change one variable: raise the profile, return to 120 Hz, increase brightness or reconnect a necessary radio only when the test shows that the feature is needed.
What battery life to expect
The 80 Wh battery gives the Ally X a larger energy reserve than the previous model, but no single runtime number applies to every game. A demanding 3D title at a high frame-rate target can draw substantially more than a lightweight game in Silent mode. Brightness, refresh rate, wireless activity, background programs and peripherals add further variation.
Use the Windows battery estimate and Armoury Crate’s power reading as live indicators, not promises. For planning a trip, test the exact game, profile, brightness and refresh rate you intend to use, and leave a margin for menus, updates and standby time.
Bottom line for the 2024 ROG Ally X
For the longest practical gaming sessions, begin in Silent mode, cap the game at the frame rate you actually need, use 60 Hz when 120 Hz adds no visible value, dim the 500-nit display to a comfortable level, shorten Windows idle timers and disable unused hardware. Move to a higher or Manual profile only when the game proves it needs more power. Enable Battery Care Mode for plugged-in use because its 80% limit is about long-term battery wear, not extra capacity today.
