Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart by testing 1080p at 30 fps if your study scene includes notes or other text that should be readable and your connection can reliably sustain YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 10 Mbps, with upload headroom. It is a practical starting point—not an official YouTube preset for study streams. Choose 720p or lower if that gives you a steadier stream and the scene remains legible. For a 24/7 broadcast, also plan around YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in full.
How to choose a resolution for a study stream
YouTube does not specify one best resolution for a 24/7 study stream. The right choice depends on what viewers need to see, how much movement is in the scene, and what your upload connection can sustain reliably. A sharp image is not useful if the stream repeatedly buffers or drops.
- Check legibility: Look at the actual stream on a phone and desktop. If notes, a timer, or other small details are hard to read, test a higher resolution or adjust the scene layout.
- Match frame rate to motion: A static desk or study scene usually has little reason to use 60 fps. A higher frame rate requires more bitrate; use it when motion detail matters.
- Favor reliability: If a lower resolution holds a stable connection while keeping the scene clear at viewers’ screen sizes, it may be the better option.
YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers, so you do not need to encode a separate stream for each device. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates for the stated ingest resolutions and frame rates; they are not guaranteed minimum connection speeds. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265, for which the applicable bitrate guidance differs. Check the current YouTube encoder settings guide before configuring a stream.
Resolution and H.264 bitrate options
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth option; confirm that text and timers remain readable. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | For scenes where motion benefits from a higher frame rate. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | A useful first test for readable notes or a desk view. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | When motion detail justifies the higher bitrate demand. |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | For a source with details that benefit from more resolution. |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | For high detail and motion when the connection can sustain it. |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | A 4K option when the source detail justifies the greater stream and recording demands. |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | The highest listed combination here; usually difficult to justify for a static scene without a specific quality need. |
These are platform recommendations, not independent performance findings for study streams. Leave bandwidth headroom rather than treating the listed bitrate as the full connection requirement.

Recommended encoder and connection settings
Use a stable bitrate and suitable keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 support; make sure the bitrate you choose matches your codec and resolution rather than applying the H.264 figures above to a different codec.
Allow upload headroom
Run a speed test on the connection you will actually use. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. A speed-test result is a planning input, not proof that the connection will remain stable all day and night. If the upload speed varies or other devices share the connection, test a lower resolution and bitrate.

Choose latency for the audience experience
For a quiet study stream with no need to respond to viewers in real time, normal latency is a reasonable default to test. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering and matters less when the creator is not interacting with the audience. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Test the stream before leaving it running
- Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval in your encoder, using YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the codec and resolution.
- Run a private or unlisted test with the real scene and audio, over the network you plan to use for the stream.
- Check legibility on a phone and desktop. Adjust the resolution or scene layout if key details are too small.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and look for buffering, dropped frames, or unstable delivery.
- Verify any local recording by checking that its file size is growing, then confirm the file is intact. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and checking the local archive.
A test demonstrates how the setup behaves under those conditions; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. YouTube also recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for your available upload connection. See its streaming tips.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not count on YouTube to preserve one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its note that 1440p and 2160p streams are automatically archived does not guarantee that a stream longer than 12 hours will be saved. Check YouTube’s archive guidance.
Use shorter sessions if the YouTube replay matters
If you need a replay on YouTube, plan shorter live sessions rather than assuming a single continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive. For content you cannot afford to lose, record a local backup as well.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Plan and verify local storage
Storage needs depend on recording bitrate, codec, and how long you keep files, so there is no universal drive capacity to recommend from resolution alone. Estimate the space from your actual recording settings and retention period. Rotate or remove files as needed, and check that the local recording is being written; a visible YouTube stream does not confirm that a backup exists.
Understand DVR limits on long broadcasts
YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. If you disable DVR, viewers cannot pause or rewind during the live broadcast, though a recording may still become available later. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Choose based on clarity, stability, and archiving
Compare viable settings by the detail viewers need to read, sustainable upload headroom, how much motion the scene contains, buffering risk, and how you will retain a recording. For many study scenes, testing 1080p at 30 fps is a sensible starting point; choose a lower setting if it delivers a clearer, more reliable viewing experience on the connection you have.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 study stream uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
