Best overall approach: combine a reputable paid, multi-device security suite with Windows’ built-in ransomware controls and a tested backup plan. For a Windows-heavy household, compare Bitdefender Total Security with Microsoft Windows Security plus Microsoft 365 Family. Remote workers should add multifactor authentication (MFA), secure remote access, patched devices and offline or cloud-to-cloud backups. No antivirus can restore files that were encrypted successfully; recovery depends on versioned or disconnected copies.
What ransomware protection must do
Ransomware is malware that encrypts files or prevents computer use until money is demanded for unlocking, according to Microsoft Support. A useful protection plan therefore has three separate jobs:
- Prevent or stop execution: detect malicious files, scripts and behavior before they can run.
- Limit damage: block untrusted programs from changing protected folders and reduce exposed entry points such as remote desktop.
- Recover: restore clean, versioned or offline copies when prevention fails.
These jobs are related but not interchangeable. A strong laboratory score does not replace a backup, and an encrypted external drive does not stop an attachment from launching. Judge products on protection, false alarms, performance, device coverage, administration and restoration—not on a single detection percentage.

| Approach | Best fit | What it provides | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Total Security | Families wanting one paid console for several devices | Paid-suite malware and behavior protection; verify current Windows, macOS, Android and iOS coverage, device count and controls for the exact regional edition | Current price, renewal terms, platform features and independent-test results must be checked for the version you buy |
| Microsoft Windows Security plus Microsoft 365 Family | Windows-centered households already using Microsoft accounts and OneDrive | Windows antivirus, Controlled Folder Access, OneDrive ransomware detection, recovery and version history | Controlled Folder Access is Windows-only; mobile protection and family features are not identical across operating systems |
| Endpoint protection plus encrypted external backup | Remote workers or families needing an independent recovery copy | Security software on each endpoint and a disconnected backup that can be restored after an incident | Requires disciplined backup rotation, physical disconnection and restoration testing; the drive is not endpoint protection |
The practical choice is often a combination rather than a single product. Select one primary real-time security layer per device, then add Microsoft’s folder control where available and maintain a separate recovery copy.

What recent independent tests actually show
AV-TEST ransomware and infostealer testing
AV-TEST’s 2024 Advanced Threat Protection test covered 26 security packages using current ransomware and infostealer samples. Products needed at least 75% of the 35 available points—26.5 points—to receive Advanced Certified status. The threshold indicates a demanding pass mark, not that every product delivered identical protection or usability.
In AV-TEST’s 2025 ransomware and infostealer test, all 20 packages earned Advanced Certified. Among the eight consumer products, one vendor missed one ransomware instance. That result is useful evidence that leading products can be very close in a particular test while still differing in false positives, speed, controls and recovery features.
Windows 11 home-user testing
AV-TEST’s December 2025 Windows 11 test evaluated 15 home-user products. Protection, performance and usability were each scored on a scale of up to six points. Use the individual category scores rather than treating the overall label as a complete buying decision: a product can protect well yet create more workload through slower scans or incorrect alerts.

AV-Comparatives’ broader view
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer awards combine Real-World Protection, Performance, Malware Protection, False-Alarm and Advanced Threat Protection tests. This multi-test approach matters for families because a product that blocks threats but repeatedly interrupts legitimate applications can lead users to disable protection. Look for consistent results across the categories and read the methodology and test date for the exact product version.

Independent tests are snapshots. Engines, operating-system integrations, prices, device limits and subscription terms change, so confirm the current edition before purchase and treat older awards as historical evidence rather than a guarantee.
Paid multi-device protection: when Bitdefender Total Security makes sense
Bitdefender Total Security is a sensible lead candidate when a household wants one subscription and a conventional security suite instead of assembling separate tools. The relevant question is not whether the brand has a high score in one chart; it is whether the current edition covers every device you intend to protect and exposes the controls your family will actually use.
Check these details before buying
- Exact edition and version: match the product named in the latest AV-TEST or AV-Comparatives report. A different edition may have different modules.
- Device count: count Windows PCs, Macs, Android phones, iPhones and tablets first. Confirm whether the advertised number is simultaneous devices or transferable seats.
- Platform parity: do not assume that ransomware behavior blocking, parental controls or web protection work identically on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
- Renewal and region: verify the recurring price, renewal amount, taxes, cancellation process and availability in your country.
- Application handling: check how an ordinary program is approved after a false positive. A clear allow-list workflow is more usable than a technically strong product that family members cannot configure.
Who should choose this route
Choose a paid suite when several household members use mixed operating systems, you want centralized notifications, or you prefer one vendor for malware, web and identity-related warnings. It is less attractive when every device is Windows, your users are comfortable with built-in controls and you already maintain a separate Microsoft 365 backup workflow.
Windows Security and Microsoft 365 Family: a capable Windows-first stack
Windows includes antivirus and ransomware-reduction features without requiring a second real-time antivirus. The most important file-protection control is Controlled Folder Access, documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It protects common folders and blocks unauthorized applications from changing files there while allowing trusted applications.

Turn on Controlled Folder Access
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Ransomware protection, choose Manage ransomware protection.
- Switch Controlled folder access to On.
- Use the notification or the Allow an app through Controlled folder access option when a legitimate application is blocked. Add only the executable you recognize and need.
Start with the default protected folders, then review which locations contain irreplaceable work or family files. Do not routinely disable the feature because a single application is inconvenient; approve that application or move the workflow to a trusted, updated program.
Pair it with OneDrive recovery
OneDrive can detect ransomware activity and provide recovery and file version history. Versioning lets you return an individual file to an earlier state; a broader restore workflow can roll back many files after an incident. Keep synchronization enabled for the folders that matter, make sure each person signs in to the intended Microsoft account, and periodically open older versions to verify that they are available.
Cloud synchronization is not the same as an independent backup: unwanted encrypted changes can synchronize. OneDrive’s detection, version history and restore capability are valuable precisely because they provide a way back, but a remote worker should still maintain an offline or cloud-to-cloud copy for a separate failure scenario.
How to choose protection for a family
1. Inventory every device
Write down each laptop, desktop, phone and tablet, its operating system and who uses it. Include an older computer used only for taxes or schoolwork; an unprotected secondary device can become the entry point for shared files. Confirm that the chosen subscription or built-in control supports the operating-system versions actually installed.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
2. Match controls to the household
Parents may need web filtering, screen-time or account-management features, while another adult may need to approve specialist software. Evaluate whether those controls exist on each platform. A feature advertised for Windows may be unavailable or substantially narrower on iOS or Android.
3. Weigh false positives and performance
Security software should remain enabled. Excessive pop-ups, blocked installers or heavy scans encourage users to turn it off. Read the usability and performance portions of independent tests, schedule full scans outside working hours, and test the applications your family depends on before deploying the product everywhere.
4. Make safe behavior easy
Enable automatic security and application updates, use unique passwords with MFA, and teach everyone to treat unexpected attachments, links and prompts as suspicious. A short family rule—verify an unusual request through a second channel—prevents many successful social-engineering attempts without requiring technical knowledge.

Remote work expands the attack surface because a laptop may connect from home networks, shared spaces and personal devices while holding company data. CISA recommends auditing remote desktop protocol (RDP), closing unused ports, enforcing MFA and backing up data frequently with offline or cloud-to-cloud copies.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Secure remote access
- Disable RDP when it is not required. If it is required, restrict access through an approved secure gateway or VPN rather than exposing the service directly to the internet.
- Review router and firewall port-forwarding rules and remove entries no longer needed.
- Use MFA for email, cloud storage, VPN, administrator accounts and any remote-access service.
- Keep the operating system, browser, VPN client and collaboration applications patched. Turn on automatic updates where business policy permits.
Separate work and personal data
Use a managed work account and store work files in the organization’s approved, versioned location. Avoid copying sensitive folders to an unmanaged personal computer or USB stick. If a family member shares the machine, use separate accounts with standard-user privileges and lock the screen whenever you step away.
Monitor account activity
Review sign-in alerts and active sessions for email and cloud storage. An unexpected MFA prompt, password-reset message or new forwarding rule can indicate account compromise even when the endpoint antivirus reports no malware. Change the password from a known-clean device and notify the employer’s IT or security team when a work account may be involved.
Build a backup and recovery plan that ransomware cannot erase
Use two different recovery paths
Maintain both a versioned online copy and a disconnected copy for the files that would be expensive or impossible to recreate. CISA specifically recommends frequent offline or cloud-to-cloud backups. An encrypted external drive is a practical offline option, provided it is disconnected after the backup completes and stored securely.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Identify documents, photos, project folders and local application data that must be recoverable.
- Configure automatic backups at a frequency that matches the amount of work you can afford to lose.
- After each backup cycle, disconnect the external drive or otherwise remove its write access from everyday devices.
- Run a restoration drill: recover several files to a separate folder, open them and confirm their dates and contents.
- Keep at least one recovery copy separate from the computer and its usual login credentials.
What to do when files are encrypted
- Disconnect the affected computer from wired and wireless networks to limit spread to shared locations.
- Do not reconnect the backup drive. Preserve ransom notes, filenames, timestamps and security alerts for your IT team or an incident responder.
- From a known-clean device, change exposed passwords and revoke active sessions; prioritize email, cloud storage, VPN and administrator accounts.
- Determine whether the event affected only local files, synchronized cloud files, shared drives or other household devices.
- Remove the malware or rebuild the affected system using your organization’s approved process before restoring data.
- Restore from the cleanest available versioned, offline or cloud-to-cloud copy, then apply updates and re-enable protections before normal use.
Restoration testing is the difference between owning a backup and having a recovery plan. A drive that has never been read back may contain incomplete, corrupted or inaccessible data.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Running two real-time antivirus engines: they can conflict and increase resource use. Keep one primary real-time engine; use other scanners only in a compatible, on-demand role.
- Allowing every Controlled Folder Access prompt: this defeats the control. Approve only a known application from a trusted source and keep it updated.
- Leaving the backup drive connected: ransomware can encrypt attached backups. Disconnect it after the job and rotate copies if the data is critical.
- Assuming cloud sync equals backup: synchronization can copy unwanted changes. Use version history, a restore feature and an independent copy.
- Ignoring phones and tablets: they may hold authentication codes, photos and cloud access. Include them in the device inventory and protect the accounts they access.
- Buying from an old test chart: test results and product editions age. Match the report date and product version, then verify current platform support and renewal terms.
- Exposing RDP for convenience: remove unused port forwarding and use an approved secure remote-access design with MFA.
A maintenance schedule that keeps protection effective
| Frequency | Action |
|---|---|
| Every day | Leave real-time protection, firewall and automatic updates enabled; respond to genuine security alerts instead of dismissing them. |
| Every week | Confirm backups completed and review cloud-storage activity for unexpected sign-ins or mass file changes. |
| Every month | Install operating-system, browser, router and application updates; review Controlled Folder Access approvals and remove software no longer needed. |
| Every quarter | Perform a restoration drill, test an older file version, inspect RDP and router rules, and verify that MFA still works for every critical account. |
| At renewal or major upgrade | Recount devices, check platform support, compare current independent-test results, and confirm the subscription’s price, renewal and cancellation terms. |
Bottom-line buying decision
For a mixed-device family that wants centralized management, start by validating the current Bitdefender Total Security edition against your device count and operating systems. For a Windows-focused household, Windows Security with Controlled Folder Access and Microsoft 365 Family’s OneDrive detection, recovery and version history can form a strong baseline without adding another real-time engine. In both cases, add MFA, secure remote access and a disconnected or cloud-to-cloud backup. The protection you can keep enabled—and the files you have actually restored in a drill—is more valuable than a feature list or an isolated laboratory score.
