For most small copper, PEX or CPVC repairs, a correctly sized brass push-to-connect coupling is the fastest reliable option. SharkBite Max brass push-to-connect couplings cover the broadest range of tube types documented here. A John Guest Speedfit CTS coupler is a credible alternative for copper, PEX and CPVC. Buy disconnect tongs or clips at the same time so you can correct an insertion mistake or replace the fitting later.
Push-fit does not mean universal. The tube must match the fitting’s listed standard and nominal size, the cut must be square and smooth, and the fitting must be pushed fully home. Ratings, code acceptance and warranty coverage apply to specific models and installation conditions, not to every push-to-connect assembly.
Quick comparison of the best DIY options
| Option | Documented tube compatibility | Useful form | Removal | Warranty information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SharkBite Max brass push-to-connect coupling | Hard-drawn copper Type K, L and M; ASTM F876/CSA B137.5 PEX; ASTM D2846/CSA B137.6 CPVC; ASTM F2769 PE-RT; ASTM D2737 SDR-9 HDPE | Coupling; the same system is sold in other fitting forms, but verify the exact part | Disconnect tongs or clips | Specified SharkBite applications can carry a 25-year warranty; conditions and approved tubing must be met |
| John Guest Speedfit CTS coupler | Copper, PEX and CPVC CTS tubing | Coupler; check the product sheet for other shapes | Use the release method specified for that Speedfit model | Specified John Guest applications can carry a 25-year warranty; coverage depends on tubing and installation conditions |
| SharkBite disconnect tongs or clips | Accessory for compatible SharkBite fittings | Removal and correction tool, not a pressure fitting | Press the release collar with the correct tool while pulling the tube | Not a fitting warranty item |
If you need one item for a straight section of pipe, choose a coupling whose size and tube standard exactly match your pipe. Use an elbow when the repair must turn 90 degrees, a tee when a branch is required, or a valve adapter when connecting to a threaded or fixture valve. The body shape does not change the need to verify the individual specification sheet.

Read the pipe marking before opening the package. Nominal size alone is not enough: a 1/2-inch copper tube and a 1/2-inch PEX tube have different outside diameters and require a fitting designed for that tube system.

Copper
SharkBite’s documented compatibility covers hard-drawn copper Type K, Type L and Type M. The cut end must be round and free of gouges. Soft or rolled copper is not listed in the supplied compatibility information, so do not use it unless the exact fitting’s current instructions expressly approve it.
PEX
For SharkBite Universal fittings, the listed PEX standard is ASTM F876/CSA B137.5. John Guest Speedfit CTS documentation lists PEX compatibility as well. Check the marking for the correct nominal size and standard, and follow the model-specific direction about tube support.
CPVC
SharkBite lists ASTM D2846/CSA B137.6 CPVC. John Guest Speedfit CTS also documents CPVC compatibility. CPVC can be damaged by a rough cut or burr, so preparation is especially important.

Materials not listed
Galvanized tube, soft or rolled copper, gas pipe and oil lines are not covered by the compatibility information here. Do not adapt a push-fit water fitting to those services without explicit manufacturer approval and local-code acceptance.
Understand pressure, temperature and service limits
SharkBite’s 2022 installation guide states: “SharkBite Universal fittings have a maximum temperature of 200°F maximum pressure 200 psi when used on copper pipe.” That is a maximum for the stated use, not a promise that every connected pipe, valve or fitting assembly can withstand those conditions.
- The weakest component controls the safe operating limit. A pipe, valve, adapter or appliance connection may have a lower pressure or temperature rating than the push-fit body.
- Ratings can differ by tube material, fitting size and model. Read the specification sheet for the exact part instead of applying the copper headline rating to PEX, CPVC, PE-RT or HDPE.
- SharkBite’s FAQ says: “SharkBite fittings are only certified for potable water & radiant heating installations.” That excludes compressed air, gas and oil service.
- Use local plumbing code for permitted locations, support, access and inspection. A manufacturer rating does not override a code requirement.
Sioux Chief identifies ASSE 1061 as the performance standard for push-fit fittings. When comparing products, look for the applicable standard marking and certification in the product documentation, not just a marketing description.
Do you need a PEX stiffener?
There is no safe one-rule answer for every push-fit fitting. Some designs include an internal tube support; others specify a separate stiffener or have a model-specific installation procedure. The product sheet for the exact fitting controls.

- Do not remove an integral support from a fitting.
- If the instructions require a separate PEX stiffener, install the specified part before insertion.
- Do not add an unapproved insert or use a support intended for a different fitting family.
- After insertion, confirm that the tube reaches the manufacturer’s marked depth and remains supported when the pipe is moved.
If the instructions do not clearly state the stiffener arrangement, stop and obtain the current sheet from the manufacturer or choose a fitting with explicit instructions. Guessing can leave the tube below the grab ring or alter the seal.
Prepare the pipe before you push the fitting on
Most leaks blamed on push-fit fittings are preparation or insertion errors. Work on a depressurized, drained line and keep the cut end clean.
- Shut off and drain. Close the supply, open a downstream tap and confirm that pressure has fallen. For a heating circuit, let the pipe cool and isolate the relevant zone.
- Expose sound tube. Remove enough damaged or corroded material to reach a straight, round section. Do not place the seal over a scratch, dent, deep tool mark or out-of-round end.
- Cut square. Use a cutter appropriate for the material and make a cut perpendicular to the tube. An angled end can fail to seat evenly.
- Remove burrs and debris. Deburr the inside and outside as the material requires, then wipe away chips, scale and dirt. Avoid sanding a groove into the sealing surface.
- Inspect the circumference. Rotate the tube and look for scratches that run through the area where the seal will sit. If damage remains, cut back farther.
- Mark insertion depth. Use the depth gauge supplied with the fitting or the dimension in its instructions. Mark the tube so you can verify full insertion after pushing.
- Check the fitting. Make sure the O-ring, grab ring and release collar are clean and undamaged. Never reuse a fitting that has a cut seal, cracked body or distorted release mechanism.
- Push fully home. Keep the tube aligned, push it straight through the release collar and seal until the depth mark meets the fitting edge. A partial push is not a temporary connection.
- Verify by pull and rotation. Pull the tube firmly without twisting the fitting. It should remain captured, and the mark should still be at the expected position.
- Support the repair. Prevent side-loads from hanging pipe, valves or water-filled equipment. Follow the fitting instructions for pipe clips and spacing.
- Pressure-test. Restore pressure gradually while watching the joint. Check it at operating pressure and again after the line has cycled. Correct any seepage immediately rather than tightening the body or adding sealant.
How to remove a push-fit fitting without damaging the pipe
Removal is possible when the pipe and fitting are in good condition, but forcing the tube out can score it and create a future leak.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Shut off the supply, drain the line and verify that no pressure remains.
- Remove pipe clips or nearby loads so the tube can move in line with the fitting.
- Use the release tool specified for the system. SharkBite’s guide calls for disconnect tongs or clips. Place the tool squarely against the release collar.
- Push the collar toward the fitting while pulling the tube straight out. Do not pry the collar with a screwdriver or twist the tube against the grab ring.
- Inspect the extracted tube for teeth marks, scoring, ovality and scratches. Cut back to clean material if any damage reaches the new seal area.
- Inspect the fitting. Replace it if the O-ring, grab ring, body or release collar is damaged, contaminated or distorted.
- Prepare and mark the tube again, insert the replacement fitting fully, and repeat the gradual pressure test.
Keep disconnect tongs or clips with the repair parts. They are inexpensive insurance when a fitting must be repositioned, and they avoid improvised removal methods that damage the pipe.

Choose the fitting shape for the repair
Straight coupling
Use a coupling to join two ends of the same approved tube after cutting out a damaged section. Leave enough straight length on both sides for the required insertion depth and for pipe support.
Elbow
An elbow changes direction without adding a separate threaded joint. Confirm that the fitting’s bend does not force the tube sideways; side-loads can stress the seal.
Tee
A tee creates a branch. Size each outlet for its actual tube, and support the branch so its weight is not carried by the main-line connection.
Valve adapter
Use a valve adapter only when its tube end and the valve connection are both specified for the service. Threaded ends may require the sealant or gasket stated by the adapter instructions; do not apply pipe dope or tape to a push-fit socket.

SharkBite Max versus John Guest Speedfit CTS
Both systems can solve common copper, PEX and CPVC repairs, but their documented scope is not identical. SharkBite’s Universal list is broader because it also names PE-RT and SDR-9 HDPE. John Guest Speedfit CTS documentation in this comparison names copper, PEX and CPVC.
| Decision point | SharkBite Max / Universal documentation | John Guest Speedfit CTS documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Copper standards | Hard-drawn Type K, L and M | Copper CTS; exact allowable type should be confirmed on the part sheet |
| PEX standard | ASTM F876/CSA B137.5 | PEX; exact standard and size should be confirmed on the part sheet |
| CPVC standard | ASTM D2846/CSA B137.6 | CPVC; exact standard and size should be confirmed on the part sheet |
| PE-RT | ASTM F2769 listed | Not stated in the supplied Speedfit CTS information |
| SDR-9 HDPE | ASTM D2737 listed | Not stated in the supplied Speedfit CTS information |
| Maximum rating | 200 psi and 200°F when used on copper, according to the 2022 guide | Not stated here; use the exact current specification sheet |
| Service certification | Potable water and radiant heating only, according to the FAQ | Not stated here; verify the intended service and local code |
| Warranty | 25 years for specified applications, subject to conditions | 25 years for specified applications, subject to conditions |
Choose SharkBite when its published material list matches your tube and you value the broader documented range. Choose Speedfit CTS when its sheet matches your copper, PEX or CPVC installation and its connection style fits the repair. In either case, the exact part number, size and local code decide the final suitability.
Warranty and code checks before closing a wall
Reliance Worldwide Corporation’s 2024 information describes a 25-year warranty period for specified SharkBite and John Guest fitting applications. The period is conditional: approved tubing standards, correct installation, intended service and other listed requirements must be met. Keep the receipt, package label and installation instructions with the project record.
Do not bury a connection merely because it passed an initial leak check. Some jurisdictions require accessible fittings, protective plates, specific support or an inspection before concealment. Ask the local authority having jurisdiction whether push-fit fittings are accepted in the proposed location. If the code or the manufacturer’s instructions require access, provide an access panel or use an approved alternative.
Troubleshoot leaks and failed connections
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Water appears immediately after pressurizing | Tube not fully inserted, crooked cut, burr, dirt or damaged O-ring | Depressurize, remove with the correct tool, recut to sound tube, clean, remark and insert to full depth |
| Tube pulls out by hand | Wrong tube size or standard, partial insertion, missing required support | Stop using the joint; verify the part sheet and reinstall with the specified support |
| Leak returns after several cycles | Scratch or ovality under the seal, side-load or a component exceeding its rating | Expose clean tube, correct alignment and support, and check the lowest-rated component |
| Release collar will not move | Pressure remains, tool is misaligned or the fitting is damaged | Drain fully, use the specified tongs or clip squarely, and replace a damaged fitting rather than forcing it |
| Fitting works on one pipe but not another | Nominal size looks the same while tube standards or outside diameters differ | Read the tube marking and match the exact ASTM/CSA or SDR designation to the fitting sheet |
A practical buying and installation checklist
- Record the tube material, nominal size and printed standard before shopping.
- Select a fitting whose specification sheet names that material and size.
- Buy the matching disconnect tongs or clips if the system requires them.
- Check whether the PEX model has an integral stiffener or requires a specified insert.
- Confirm the service is potable water or radiant heating when using SharkBite Universal fittings.
- Compare the fitting’s rating with the pipe, valve and appliance ratings; use the lowest limit.
- Check ASSE 1061 or other required certification and local-code acceptance.
- Keep fittings accessible when the code or manufacturer does not permit concealed installation.
- Cut square, deburr, clean, mark insertion depth and push fully home.
- Pressure-test gradually before closing the wall or returning equipment to service.
Bottom line
A SharkBite Max brass coupling is the strongest general-purpose starting point for a documented copper, PEX, CPVC, PE-RT or SDR-9 HDPE repair, provided the exact model and local code allow your installation. A John Guest Speedfit CTS coupler is a sound alternative for compatible copper, PEX or CPVC. The fitting brand matters less than matching the tube standard, preparing a flawless square cut, using the specified PEX support, inserting to the marked depth and pressure-testing the finished joint.
