For a reproducible Windows PE baseline, start with EMBER. Choose SOREL-20M when you need tens of millions of labeled files and have the storage and processing capacity; BODMAS when family labels and temporal analysis are central; Drebin for Android; MalwareBazaar for newer samples and external testing; and EMBER2024 for multi-format experiments. The right dataset depends less on headline sample count than on platform, label granularity, time period, available data form, and access terms.

EMBER: the practical Windows PE baseline
EMBER is usually the best first dataset for a static Windows executable classifier. It provides versioned feature archives and the code used to extract those features, so you can reproduce a baseline without downloading and safely handling a massive binary collection. This makes it useful for testing feature engineering, model architectures and evaluation code before committing to large-scale storage.
What EMBER contains
The principal data form is precomputed static features for Windows PE files, paired with benign or malicious labels. The extraction pipeline is part of the project, allowing a study to document exactly how raw PE structure becomes model input. It is therefore a feature benchmark rather than a general-purpose malware sample repository.
Why release selection matters
EMBER documentation distinguishes its 2017 and 2018 selections. The 2018 set was deliberately chosen so that the resulting training and test sets would be harder for machine-learning algorithms to classify. Results from one release should not be presented as if they came from the other: record the release, selection criteria and split used in every experiment.

When EMBER is the right choice
- You need a lightweight, repeatable benign-versus-malicious Windows PE baseline.
- Your model consumes static features rather than raw binaries.
- You want other researchers to reproduce preprocessing without arranging access to a large corpus.
EMBER is less suitable when your central question requires malware-family labels, current threat samples, behavioral telemetry or direct binary analysis.
SOREL-20M: scale, metadata and disarmed binaries
SOREL-20M is the scale-oriented option. Its collection contains approximately 10 million benign and 10 million malicious PE files, with roughly balanced classes. The project provides EMBER-v2 features, metadata, labels, telemetry counts, behavioral tags and approximately 10 million disarmed binaries.
What the scale changes
Twenty million files can support experiments that would be statistically fragile on a small benchmark: high-capacity models, rare-event analyses, long temporal windows and robust holdout sets. Metadata and telemetry counts also let you study signals beyond the static feature vector, while behavioral tags support more targeted analyses.

The complete collection is approximately 8 TB. That figure affects disk capacity, transfer time, backup strategy, indexing and the cost of repeatedly scanning or transforming files. A feature-only workflow may be practical on infrastructure that cannot accommodate the full binary collection; decide which components your experiment actually needs.
Access and handling
SOREL-20M documentation points users to terms of use and describes a public S3 bucket. Public access does not automatically grant permission to redistribute binaries, mirror the collection or publish derived samples. Check the current terms and design your data pipeline so sensitive artifacts remain in the approved environment.
BODMAS: family labels and temporal analysis
BODMAS is the strongest fit when the research question is about malware families, changing distributions or concept drift rather than only the benign/malicious boundary. The published collection contains 134,435 samples from 581 families: 57,293 malware files and 77,142 benign files. It includes hashes and PE samples with family and temporal context.

Why family information matters
A binary classifier can perform well by learning broad artifacts shared across related samples. Family labels let you ask harder questions: whether a model recognizes an unseen family, whether errors concentrate in particular families and whether family-level leakage is inflating a random split.

BODMAS was collected from August 2019 through September 2020. Treat that interval as part of the benchmark definition. For temporal studies, train on earlier files and test on later files; for family generalization, hold out complete families rather than individual files. Do not describe BODMAS results as current-threat performance without a separate, newer evaluation set.
Drebin: a controlled Android dataset
Drebin is designed for Android malware research, not Windows PE classification. It contains 5,560 applications from 179 malware families, collected from August 2010 through October 2012. The age and platform are important: Android permissions, APIs and packaging have changed substantially since that period.
Access requirements
Distribution is controlled. An access request requires your identity, affiliation and research scope, and may require an advisor or institutional address. Apply before building a schedule around the data, and retain the approval conditions with your experiment records.
Appropriate uses
- Android static malware classification and family analysis.
- Reproducing or extending studies that specifically use the Drebin collection.
- Comparing feature representations under a historically defined Android benchmark.
Do not combine Drebin with Windows PE datasets merely to increase the row count; the file formats, feature semantics and threat timelines are different.

MalwareBazaar: a changing source for freshness
MalwareBazaar is better treated as a current sample-sharing platform than as a fixed benchmark. Its FAQ reports more than 1,155,941 confirmed samples and describes multiple access methods, but both the count and procedures can change.

Use it for refreshes and external tests
A practical pattern is to train and tune on a fixed benchmark such as EMBER or BODMAS, then use a time-stamped MalwareBazaar collection as an external test. This separates reproducible model development from the question of whether performance survives newer samples.
Record the moving parts
- Collection date and exact query or download method.
- Cryptographic hashes for every retained sample.
- File type, label source and any family or tag supplied by the platform.
- Filtering, deduplication and disarming steps.
Because it is a changing feed, a later researcher may not be able to reconstruct the identical sample set. Preserve metadata and, where terms permit, a manifest of hashes rather than assuming the platform itself is a permanent benchmark.
EMBER2024: beyond one PE-only task
EMBER2024 extends the benchmark concept to more than 3.2 million files across six file formats and seven classification tasks, according to its preprint. It supplies hashes, metadata, features and labels. This makes it a candidate for experiments comparing formats or tasks beyond simple Windows benign-versus-malicious classification.
Interpret its status carefully
Because the documentation is preprint-level, verify the current release, available artifacts and terms before making it the sole basis of a production claim. Report the exact task and file formats used; “EMBER2024 performance” is too broad when the collection spans multiple problem definitions.

If resources permit, use a staged design: establish a reproducible EMBER baseline, test family and time generalization with BODMAS, scale selected models on SOREL-20M, and reserve a dated MalwareBazaar set for external evaluation. Keep each dataset’s labels and feature definitions separate.
Features, metadata or original binaries?
The data form determines what conclusions are possible.

- Precomputed features: fastest and safest for baseline modeling, but you cannot test a new parser or inspect a model’s dependence on raw sections unless the extraction code and required inputs are available.
- Original or disarmed binaries: enable custom static analysis and parser research, but require malware-safe infrastructure, substantially more storage and careful access control.
- Metadata and telemetry: can improve context and support drift studies, but may introduce collection-process artifacts that do not generalize to another provider.
- Family labels: support family-held-out tests, yet family names and assignments can vary by labeling source. Preserve the provenance and version of every label.
Do not call a feature-only benchmark a raw-binary benchmark, and do not infer that a dataset contains executable samples simply because it is described as a malware dataset.
Build a defensible evaluation
1. Define the unit of generalization
Decide whether the model must generalize to random files, later files, unseen families, a new format or a different collection source. The split follows that question.
2. Deduplicate before splitting
Deduplicate using cryptographic hashes before creating train, validation and test sets. Near-duplicates and repackaged files can still leak information, so inspect family, temporal and metadata relationships where the dataset supplies them.
3. Preserve time and family boundaries
Random splits can overstate performance when related files or future information cross the boundary. EMBER documents different selection criteria between its 2017 and 2018 releases, while BODMAS is explicitly suited to temporal analysis. Report the dates, family policy and split algorithm rather than only a random seed.
4. Report label balance and provenance
State benign and malicious counts, family coverage, collection period, label source and any relabeling. Accuracy alone can conceal failures on the minority class; include class-wise precision, recall, false-positive rate and a metric appropriate to your operational threshold.
5. Keep an untouched external set
Use a dated, separately collected set—such as a permitted MalwareBazaar sample—for the final check. Do not tune thresholds repeatedly on that set, or it stops being an external evaluation.

Operational and legal safeguards
- Verify current terms before downloading, redistributing, mirroring or publishing binaries and derived datasets.
- Use isolated analysis infrastructure, least-privilege accounts and controlled transfer paths for executable material.
- Keep manifests, hashes, label provenance, release identifiers and collection dates with the experiment.
- Separate benign and malicious handling procedures; a file labeled benign is not guaranteed to be harmless.
- Document which artifacts were never retained because of access or safety restrictions.
Drebin’s identity and research-scope review, SOREL-20M’s terms of use, and MalwareBazaar’s platform rules are part of dataset selection—not administrative details to resolve after a model is trained.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using the largest dataset automatically
Problem: Storage and processing dominate the project, while the research question only needs a compact baseline. Fix: start with EMBER features and scale to SOREL-20M only when additional examples or metadata answer a defined question.
Mixing platforms or feature definitions
Problem: Android features, PE features and multi-format tasks are treated as interchangeable. Fix: train and evaluate within a clearly defined platform and task, then make cross-format comparisons only when the representation and label semantics are documented.

Reporting random-split scores as future performance
Problem: duplicates, related families or collection artifacts cross the split. Fix: deduplicate, use temporal or family-held-out tests, and preserve a dated external set.
Assuming a public download permits redistribution
Problem: binaries or mirrors are published without checking terms. Fix: read the current repository rules and publish hashes, code or aggregate results when redistribution is not authorized.
A practical selection workflow
- Write the task in one sentence: for example, “classify Windows PE files using static features,” “identify unseen malware families,” or “test a detector on newer samples.”
- Choose the platform and data form: select PE, Android or multi-format data, then decide whether features, metadata or binaries are necessary.
- Set the generalization target: random, temporal, family-held-out or external-source evaluation.
- Check access, storage and safety constraints: include Drebin approval, SOREL-20M’s approximately 8 TB footprint and any current platform terms.
- Create a manifest: record dataset release, hashes, labels, dates, family identifiers, preprocessing and split membership.
- Establish a fixed baseline: use the simplest defensible model and publish its preprocessing before adding complexity.
- Add stress tests: evaluate time drift, unseen families, class imbalance and an untouched external set where permitted.
Bottom line
EMBER is the default starting point for reproducible static Windows PE classification. BODMAS is the more informative choice for family and temporal generalization; SOREL-20M is the scale option when an approximately 8 TB collection is practical. Drebin serves controlled Android research, MalwareBazaar supplies freshness rather than a stable benchmark, and EMBER2024 broadens evaluation to six formats and seven tasks. A credible study documents the exact release, data form, labels, time boundaries, deduplication method, access terms and split design—not just the model score.
