For a PS5 library built around large games, a 2TB PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 SSD with a properly sized heatsink is the best starting point; choose 4TB if you regularly keep dozens of installed games, and reserve 8TB for maximum capacity. Sony supports 250GB to 8TB M.2 expansion, recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read speed, and requires the assembled SSD-and-heatsink unit to fit the expansion-bay limits. Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed for PS5, but no official install-size figure has been published, so plan for the broader growth of a large-game library rather than a guessed GTA VI number.

Quick recommendation

Buy a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD that meets Sony’s PCIe Gen4x4 and 5,500MB/s-or-faster sequential-read guidance, and install it with a heatsink that keeps the complete assembly within the console’s expansion-bay width, length and thickness limits. A 2TB model is the sensible value baseline. A 4TB model costs more but avoids moving games in and out of storage as often. Sony documents 8TB as the maximum supported capacity, useful for an unusually large library but usually the least economical choice.

The WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5 is officially licensed and documented in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P SSD for PS5 is another purpose-built expansion product with a heatsink designed around PS5 airflow; check the exact capacity and assembled dimensions of the SKU available in your region. A bare M.2 drive can also work when paired with a compatible low-profile heatsink, but the drive and heatsink must be evaluated as one unit.

What Sony requires from a PS5 expansion SSD

Interface and speed

The expansion slot accepts an M.2 solid-state drive using a PCIe Gen4x4 interface. PlayStation’s installation guidance lists a recommended sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster. That figure is a compatibility recommendation for the console’s expansion path, not a guarantee that one retail model will make games load faster than another. Unless independent testing shows a measurable difference in a particular title, use Sony’s specification as the pass/fail baseline.

Capacity range

Sony lists storage space from 250GB through 8TB. The usable amount shown by the console will be lower than the number on the package because formatting and system overhead consume space. Capacity is still the most important practical choice: a faster drive with too little room forces constant transfers, while a sufficiently large compliant drive lets you keep a working collection installed.

Heatsink and physical dimensions

The M.2 drive must be installed with a heat-dissipation mechanism. Some PS5-focused products include a heatsink; a bare SSD needs a separately purchased compatible heatsink. Sony specifies maximum width, length and total thickness for the assembled drive, including the heatsink. Do not check only the SSD’s dimensions or only the heatsink’s dimensions. Confirm the combined height and width against the current PlayStation M.2 installation guide before opening the console.

What is not a requirement

The drive does not need a proprietary brand, a particular controller, or an “official” label to be accepted. It does need to satisfy the interface, speed, capacity and physical-clearance requirements. A product marketed for another device can still be suitable if its complete specification meets those limits; conversely, a drive advertised as PS5-compatible can be unsuitable if a regional SKU uses a different heatsink or enclosure.

  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Choosing 2TB, 4TB or 8TB

Capacity Best fit Advantages Trade-offs
1TB Small libraries or a second expansion drive Lower purchase cost and enough room for a limited set of large titles Fills quickly when several modern games, updates and media apps are retained
2TB Most players who want a practical upgrade Good capacity per dollar, with room for a substantial mix of PS5 and PS4 games May require archiving if every large title is kept installed
4TB Players with a large rotating library or slow internet transfers Much less shuffling between internal and expansion storage Higher upfront price; compare price per usable terabyte rather than package capacity alone
8TB Maximum-capacity installations Matches Sony’s documented upper limit and minimizes archiving Usually the highest total cost; verify the exact model, heatsink and current stock carefully

A 2TB drive is the value recommendation because it materially expands the console without paying the premium attached to the largest capacities. Choose 4TB when your priority is convenience: keeping a broad collection installed can be worth more than the lower initial price of a smaller drive. An 8TB drive is a capacity decision, not a performance upgrade; it should be considered only after confirming that the price and physical specification of the particular product make sense.

PS5-compatible SSD options to investigate

Option Documented information What to verify before purchase
WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5 Western Digital describes it as officially licensed for PlayStation 5 and lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. Regional price, stock, warranty terms and the dimensions of the supplied heatsink for the exact capacity.
SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P SSD for PS5 SanDisk positions it as a PS5 storage-expansion product and describes a heatsink designed for PS5 airflow. The capacity, sequential-read specification and assembled width, length and thickness of the offered SKU.
Bare PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 SSD plus compatible heatsink Can be economical when the SSD already meets Sony’s interface, speed and capacity guidance. Total SSD-plus-heatsink dimensions, heatsink contact with the controller and NAND, installation hardware and warranty conditions.

These are product categories supported by manufacturer documentation, not a claim that one model is universally faster. Retail names, capacities, pricing and stock can change. Read the specification sheet for the exact listing you are buying, especially when a product has several revisions.

How to compare two candidate drives

  1. Check the interface: it should explicitly state PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe (often written as PCIe 4.0 x4).
  2. Check sequential read speed: look for a rated figure of at least 5,500MB/s, while remembering that manufacturer ratings are measured under specified test conditions.
  3. Check the assembled dimensions: add the SSD and heatsink thicknesses and confirm the complete unit stays within Sony’s expansion-bay limits.
  4. Confirm heatsink inclusion: an included heatsink reduces fitting risk, but it still has to be low enough for the PS5 bay. With a bare SSD, select a heatsink sold as PS5-compatible or otherwise documented to meet the same clearance limits.
  5. Compare usable capacity and price: divide the current purchase price by the advertised terabytes, then allow for formatting overhead and any price premium for a pre-fitted heatsink.
  6. Read the warranty: note the warranty period, the conditions for a heatsink-equipped installation and the procedure for a replacement if the drive fails.
  7. Check the exact SKU: capacity, heatsink design and dimensions can differ between 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB versions or between regional listings.

Do not select a drive solely because its headline sequential-read number is higher. Once a drive meets Sony’s requirements, capacity, physical fit, warranty and price per usable terabyte generally affect the ownership experience more than small differences in advertised peak speed.

Installing the M.2 SSD in a PS5

Back up important saves before changing hardware, and shut the console down completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Use a clean, well-lit surface and a precision Phillips screwdriver; the procedure requires removing covers and fastening the drive with the supplied screw.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power down and unplug: select the PS5 power option to turn it off, wait for the indicators to stop, disconnect the power cable and allow the console to cool.
  2. Remove the console cover: place the console in the orientation described by PlayStation’s guide and slide off the required outer cover. Do not force a panel that has not been released from its catches.
  3. Open the expansion slot: remove the expansion-slot cover to expose the M.2 bay and its spacer and screw.
  4. Set the spacer: position the supplied spacer in the hole corresponding to the length of the SSD. The drive must rest level on the spacer rather than flexing above it.
  5. Insert the SSD: hold the module by its edges, align the connector notch and slide it into the socket at an angle. Lower it gently until the mounting hole lines up with the spacer.
  6. Secure the drive: use the supplied screw to fasten the SSD to the spacer. Tighten it until secure without overtightening or bending the circuit board.
  7. Reinstall the covers: replace the expansion-slot cover and the outer console cover, ensuring they are fully seated.
  8. Reconnect and format: reconnect the cables and start the PS5. On first use, the console prompts you to format the M.2 SSD; formatting erases the drive, so do not install it with data you need to keep.
  9. Check the result: open the PS5 storage settings to confirm the capacity and select the preferred installation location for PS5 and PS4 games.

If the console does not detect the drive, power it down and reseat the module. Recheck that the connector is fully inserted, the screw is in the correct spacer position, the heatsink is not preventing the slot cover from closing, and the drive is within the documented dimensions.

Planning storage for GTA VI and other large games

Rockstar’s official support information lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the PlayStation Store listing identifies a PS5 version. Neither cited official listing publishes an installation-size figure. Any precise GTA VI download-size claim circulating before an official figure appears is therefore an estimate, not a specification you should use for a purchase decision.

Instead, size the SSD for your whole library. Keep free space for patches, temporary installation files and captures, rather than filling every last gigabyte with games. A 2TB expansion is appropriate if you routinely uninstall completed titles. A 4TB expansion is more comfortable when you want a persistent collection of open-world games, multiplayer clients and frequently replayed titles. The 8TB ceiling is useful only when the cost of avoiding archives outweighs the price premium.

Internal M.2 storage versus external USB storage

Use case Internal M.2 expansion External USB storage
Play PS5 games Yes; PS5 games can be installed and played from the M.2 drive. Generally no; PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or the M.2 SSD to play.
Play PS4 games Yes. Yes, when the drive meets the PS5’s external-storage requirements.
Store or archive PS5 games Yes, with immediate play access. Yes; use it as an archive and copy titles back before playing.
Media applications and files Supported by Sony’s M.2 storage path. Useful for compatible media and general file storage, subject to the console’s USB rules.

An external USB drive is a complementary solution, not a substitute for an M.2 expansion when your goal is to launch PS5 games without transfers. It can lower the cost of keeping a large catalog archived, while the M.2 drive holds the games you are actively playing.

Troubleshooting and common mistakes

The PS5 does not recognize the SSD

  • Shut down fully, unplug the console and reseat the M.2 module.
  • Confirm the module is inserted in the correct orientation and secured to the spacer rather than left at an angle.
  • Verify that the drive is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and that its capacity is between 250GB and 8TB.
  • Check that the heatsink is not so thick or wide that the expansion cover prevents proper seating.
  • If a newly installed drive still fails detection, test the console with the drive removed and consult the drive manufacturer’s warranty process rather than repeatedly forcing the connector.

The expansion cover will not close

Remove the assembly and measure the combined SSD-and-heatsink height and width. A heatsink that is acceptable on a desktop motherboard can exceed the PS5 bay’s clearance. Replace it with a lower-profile model documented for the console; do not operate with the cover forced or left loose.

The console reports less capacity than advertised

Some space is consumed by formatting and system overhead, so the usable number is lower than the package capacity. This is normal. Compare drives using their advertised capacity consistently, and leave additional working space for updates.

Games still install to the wrong location

After formatting, open the PS5 storage settings and select the default installation location for PS5 or PS4 games. Existing titles remain where they were installed until you move them manually, so check each game’s storage location before assuming the new drive is being used.

A game is slow to start after transfer

Copying a PS5 game from USB storage is limited by the transfer path and the external drive, not just the M.2 SSD. Once the game is installed on console or M.2 storage, use the console’s storage settings to verify its location before diagnosing the internal drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessories and setup costs to account for

  • Heatsink: required for the M.2 installation; it may be bundled or purchased separately.
  • Precision Phillips screwdriver: useful for removing covers and tightening the mounting screw.
  • External USB drive: optional, but practical for PS4 games and PS5-game archives.
  • Price and stock: verify current regional pricing and availability at the time of purchase; the cited product documentation does not establish a fixed retail price.

When comparing a bare SSD with a pre-fitted PS5 product, include the cost of a compatible heatsink and the value of a simpler installation. A lower sticker price can disappear once an appropriately sized heatsink and screwdriver are added.

Buying checklist

  • Capacity selected for your actual library: 2TB for value, 4TB for convenience, or 8TB for maximum documented expansion.
  • PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface stated on the specification sheet.
  • Sequential read rating of at least 5,500MB/s.
  • Heatsink included, or a separately selected heatsink that keeps the assembled unit within Sony’s bay limits.
  • Exact width, length and thickness checked for the specific capacity and regional SKU.
  • Warranty and return terms understood before installation and formatting.
  • Current price, stock and price per usable terabyte compared with at least one alternative.
  • External USB storage treated as an archive or PS4 solution, not as direct PS5-game storage.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
