For most players, buy the standard PS5. Rockstar confirms that Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and the standard PS5 is the safest balance of confirmed compatibility, price, and hardware capability. Choose the PS5 Pro if you want the most storage and the greatest documented graphics headroom; choose Xbox Series X if your games, subscriptions, and friends are already on Xbox; choose Xbox Series S only when the lowest entry price matters more than image-quality certainty.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 on consoles
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Support gives the release date as November 19, 2026. Rockstar also describes the game as a single-player experience. These are the platform facts you can rely on when choosing hardware today.

Rockstar says the physical edition contains a download code. That means buying a boxed copy does not necessarily mean the complete game is printed on a disc; you will still need an internet connection to download the game or associated content. Check the exact package description and regional terms before buying.
The PlayStation Store labels GTA 6 PS5 Pro Enhanced. That confirms a Pro-specific designation, but Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 table showing the exact resolution, frame-rate modes, ray-tracing settings, or visual differences on each console.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Publicly demonstrated console footage has been reported as appearing to run at 30 frames per second by Tom’s Hardware. That is an observation of demonstrated footage, not a final Rockstar specification. Do not buy any console on the assumption that GTA 6 will offer a guaranteed 60 FPS mode.
Quick recommendation by type of buyer
| Buyer priority | Best choice | Why | Important reservation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall balance | Standard PS5 | Confirmed GTA 6 platform with the broadest, least complicated recommendation for a new buyer. | Rockstar has not published final graphics modes or performance targets. |
| Highest documented console headroom | PS5 Pro | 2TB built-in SSD, advanced ray-tracing capability, Game Boost features for supported games, and a PS5 Pro Enhanced GTA 6 listing. | GTA 6-specific Pro improvements have not been itemized, and the US RRP is $699.99. |
| Best for an existing Xbox household | Xbox Series X | Officially supported and the strongest Xbox hardware option for people invested in Xbox accounts, libraries, or services. | GTA 6 resolution and frame-rate modes remain unpublished. |
| Lowest-cost supported route | Xbox Series S | Official GTA 6 support with the lowest hardware entry point in the Series family. | Expect the greatest uncertainty about resolution and visual settings; no official GTA 6 mode table exists. |
1. Standard PS5: the default recommendation
Why it is the safest choice
The standard PS5 is the right starting point if you are buying a console specifically for GTA 6 and do not already belong to an Xbox ecosystem. It is an officially confirmed launch platform, avoids the PS5 Pro premium, and gives you the normal PS5 version rather than relying on an unannounced future port or upgrade.
Sony positions GTA 6 as playing best on PS5 by using the console’s immersive features for a single-player experience. That is Sony’s marketing position, not an independent benchmark, so treat it as an indication of how Sony wants the game presented rather than proof of a particular resolution or frame rate.

Decide first whether you need a disc drive. A disc-capable PS5 is the practical choice if you buy boxed games, borrow games, or want to resell them. A digital PS5 is appropriate only if you are comfortable purchasing and downloading games entirely through the PlayStation Store. Because Rockstar says the GTA 6 physical edition includes a download code, a boxed purchase still requires downloading, but a disc-capable console gives you more flexibility for other physical games.
Retail bundles and model revisions can change the included accessories, storage configuration, and price. Compare the exact model number and contents rather than assuming every “PS5” listing is identical. The GTA 6 compatibility decision is the same across standard PS5 variants, but the disc-drive question is not.
Who should choose it
- New console buyers who want the most straightforward confirmed GTA 6 purchase.
- Players who prefer PlayStation’s controller features and account ecosystem.
- Households that want to buy physical games as well as digital downloads.
- Anyone who does not need the PS5 Pro’s extra storage or enhanced rendering features.
2. PS5 Pro: the premium GTA 6 option
What the Pro adds on paper
Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement lists a $699.99 US recommended retail price and a 2TB SSD. Sony’s product documentation also confirms 2TB of built-in storage and Game Boost features for supported games. The PlayStation Store labels GTA 6 PS5 Pro Enhanced, making this the only console in the comparison with a specific GTA 6 enhancement designation.
The Pro also provides more advanced ray-tracing capability than the standard PS5. That creates additional graphics headroom, but it does not tell us how Rockstar will use it in GTA 6. A label such as PS5 Pro Enhanced can cover higher image quality, steadier performance, added effects, or a combination of improvements; Rockstar has not yet specified which benefits apply to this game.
What the Pro does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee 4K output, native 4K rendering, or a particular internal resolution.
- It does not guarantee a 60 FPS mode.
- It does not guarantee that every visual setting will be higher than on the standard PS5.
- It does not establish whether GTA 6 will use a separate Pro graphics mode, a dynamic resolution change, or another implementation.
Until Rockstar publishes technical details, the Pro’s recommendation is based on documented hardware capacity and the store’s Enhanced label, not on a measured GTA 6 performance result.
Who should pay the premium
Choose the PS5 Pro if you already use a 4K display, keep large games installed, and are willing to pay more for the best documented PlayStation hardware. The 2TB SSD can reduce the need for immediate storage management compared with consoles with less usable space, although the final installed size of GTA 6 has not been announced.
If you are buying a console only for GTA 6 and the Pro price would force you to compromise on a display, storage expansion, or other essentials, the standard PS5 is the more rational purchase. The Pro’s GTA 6-specific advantage may be meaningful, but its exact size is still unknown.
3. Xbox Series X: the right Xbox for invested players
Why Series X makes sense
Xbox Series X is an official GTA 6 launch platform and the best Xbox choice for players who already own Xbox games, use Xbox services, or want to stay with an existing Microsoft account and friends list. Avoiding a platform switch can be worth more than small differences in launch pricing, especially when your existing library and accessories are already on Xbox.
Series X is the performance-oriented member of the Xbox Series family. That makes it the safer Xbox choice when you care about image quality and want more hardware margin than the Series S provides. However, no official GTA 6 resolution, frame-rate, or ray-tracing table has been published for Series X, so it is not accurate to promise a specific mode.
Disc and digital considerations
Xbox Series X is the disc-capable Xbox model. That matters if you collect boxed games or plan to buy a physical GTA 6 package. Rockstar’s statement that the physical edition contains a download code still applies: even with a disc drive, plan for a download and any required updates.
If you are moving from an older Xbox console, check that your account, save expectations, headset, and display connection are compatible with the Series X package you are buying. GTA 6 itself is confirmed for Series X, but accessory and account convenience often determine whether the Xbox purchase feels worthwhile.
Who should choose it
- Existing Xbox owners with a substantial digital or physical library.
- Players who use Xbox subscriptions and want to remain in that ecosystem.
- Buyers who want the stronger Xbox hardware rather than the smallest console.
- Households that need a disc drive and prefer Xbox services.
4. Xbox Series S: the budget route with the most uncertainty
What you get
Xbox Series S is officially supported for GTA 6 and is the lowest-cost entry point among the supported console families. It is a sensible choice when the initial hardware price is the overriding concern, when you play on a smaller display, or when you are comfortable buying games digitally.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Series S is a digital-only console, so it cannot read a boxed game disc. Rockstar’s physical GTA 6 edition therefore does not give Series S owners a disc-based installation path; you would need the digital purchase or a code redeemed through the Xbox store. Confirm the edition and redemption terms in your region before ordering.
The trade-off
The final GTA 6 resolution and frame-rate targets for Series S have not been published. Because it has less graphics hardware headroom than Series X, it is the console for which online predictions are most likely to be wrong. Do not treat leaked mode tables, retailer copy, or assumptions based on other games as Rockstar specifications.
Series S can still be a legitimate GTA 6 purchase. The important decision is whether you can accept uncertainty about image quality and performance in exchange for the lower entry cost. If you are especially sensitive to resolution, visual effects, or frame-rate consistency, Series X is the safer Xbox purchase.

“Not stated” means the available official material does not establish a comparable value here; it is not a claim that the console lacks the feature. Prices also vary by country, retailer, bundle, taxes, and promotions, so do not convert the PS5 Pro’s US RRP into a local price without checking your market.

What is still unknown before launch
Rockstar has not released a complete technical specification sheet for GTA 6 on these consoles. The following questions remain open:
- Whether any console receives a 60 FPS performance mode.
- The internal and output resolution ranges on each platform.
- Whether ray tracing is enabled, optional, or limited to particular modes.
- The exact differences covered by the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.
- The installed file size and the amount of free storage required at launch.
- Whether updates will alter visual modes after release.
These gaps are important when evaluating online claims. A video capture can show one build, one scene, or one display setting; it cannot establish every mode in the shipping game. Wait for Rockstar’s own technical documentation or in-game mode information before treating exact figures as final.
How to choose in five steps
- Pick your ecosystem first. If your friends, purchased games, and subscriptions are on Xbox, start with Series X or Series S. If you already use PlayStation or want the PS5 version, start with standard PS5 or PS5 Pro.
- Set a hard total budget. Include the console, game, display upgrades, storage, and any disc-drive requirement. The documented PS5 Pro US RRP alone is $699.99 before those additions.
- Decide whether you need physical media. Choose a disc-capable model for boxed games. Choose Series S only if digital purchases are acceptable.
- Choose your tolerance for technical uncertainty. For the most conservative purchase, use standard PS5 or Series X. For the lowest price, accept the unresolved Series S graphics profile. For the most documented headroom, choose PS5 Pro without assuming a specific GTA 6 frame rate.
- Recheck official specifications near launch. Before paying, verify Rockstar’s final mode information, the console SKU, storage, disc-drive contents, regional price, and the delivery method for the physical edition.
Preparing for release
Reserve enough storage
The final GTA 6 installation size has not been announced. Leave substantial free space rather than filling the internal drive with older games in the weeks before November 19, 2026. The PS5 Pro’s documented 2TB SSD gives it the clearest built-in storage advantage in this comparison, but it does not reveal GTA 6’s eventual size.
Plan for a download
Rockstar confirms that the physical edition contains a download code. Ensure your console can connect to the internet and that your account can redeem the code in the region where you bought it. A disc drive alone will not remove the need for downloading.

Use the right display expectations
A 4K television or monitor can make differences in image quality easier to see, but it cannot create a frame-rate mode that Rockstar has not enabled. Do not buy a new display solely on the basis of an unverified GTA 6 performance claim.
Bottom line by console
Buy standard PS5 if you want the sensible default
It is the balanced recommendation for a new buyer: confirmed support, familiar PlayStation features, and no need to pay the Pro premium.
Buy PS5 Pro if you want premium hardware
Its 2TB SSD, advanced ray-tracing capability, Game Boost features, and PS5 Pro Enhanced GTA 6 listing make it the premium pick. The exact in-game benefit remains unconfirmed.
Buy Xbox Series X if Xbox is already your home
It preserves your Xbox account, library, services, and accessories while providing the stronger Series-family hardware.
