It supports Windows, Linux, and macOS, but remains early, experimental software: many games do not work, and titles that do may still have issues. Which PS4 emulator should you use on PC?
Start with shadPS4 if you want to experiment with PS4 emulation. The project describes itself as an early PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and warns: “shadPS4 is early in development, don’t expect a flawless experience.” That makes it a starting point—not a dependable replacement for a PS4.

There is not enough authoritative, current information here to rank other PS4 emulator projects against shadPS4. Avoid treating an unverified alternative list as a meaningful comparison: assess whether a project has an official current build, published requirements, a user-facing setup path, and title-specific compatibility information.
Will your PS4 game work in shadPS4?
Compatibility depends on the individual game and can change as the emulator develops. The official Quickstart Guide says many games do not work, while games that do can still have emulation issues. The project README names Bloodborne, Dark Souls Remastered, and Red Dead Redemption as games it can run; that statement does not establish that every version or PC setup can play them fully.

The current Quickstart lists these minimum requirements. They are the guide’s baseline, not a promise that a particular game will run well.

These specifications come from the official Quickstart Guide and may change. The guide also recommends updating your graphics drivers. Meeting the minimums does not resolve game-specific compatibility issues.
How do you get started?
- Check your game first. Look up its current status in the official compatibility resource and read the Quickstart Guide for current prerequisites.
- Choose the GUI route. The project directs end users to QtLauncher. Its downloads page describes QtLauncher as a graphical interface that can download emulator releases and prereleases. The GitHub core releases are command-line oriented, so QtLauncher is the more approachable route for typical users.
- Install your own game dump. The Quickstart explains installing a game dumped from your own PS4 copy, along with adding updates and DLC. Games, updates, and DLC are copyrighted; use files sourced from your own copy rather than third-party downloads.
- Load firmware modules when needed. The Quickstart says modules can improve compatibility where they have not been reimplemented. The README specifies that required modules must be dumped from a legally owned PS4.
- Connect controls if you want them. The README says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box. A controller is optional, not a stated requirement.
Do you need a PS4 to use a PS4 emulator?
You need legally sourced game files, and the project’s instructions describe dumping games from your own PS4 copy. Required firmware modules must also be dumped from a legally owned PS4. The documented process therefore relies on access to a PS4 and your own game copy for those files; the emulator itself does not provide them.
