For sensitive letters, start with your phone or computer’s built-in accessibility reader if it does what you need, then check the specific app’s privacy settings and policy. Confirm whether letter text is processed on your device or sent to a service, whether it is retained, and whether it may be used to improve the service. A microphone or speech-recognition setting does not answer those questions: reading text aloud and recognizing spoken input are different functions.
What to check before letting an app read a letter
- Identify the reader. Is it an operating-system accessibility feature, a reader built into the letter app, or an assistant that retrieves messages? These can have different access and data practices.
- Check the app’s policy and settings. Look for whether text is processed locally or uploaded, how long it is kept, whether it is used for service improvement, and whether those uses can be turned off. If the policy does not make this clear, do not assume the content stays on your device.
- Look for offline operation or downloaded voices. Some features may use device-provided text-to-speech or offer voices for on-device use. Verify the behavior for the exact app and circumstances; an offline option in one feature does not establish how another feature works.
- Limit what the reader can access. Prefer a feature that reads text you select when that is sufficient, rather than one that needs broader access to messages. Check the app’s permissions and its own explanation of what content it can retrieve.
- Protect playback privacy. In a shared space, listen in a way that keeps the audio private or wait until you can. Spoken playback can be overheard; private listening does not change whether the app uploads or retains text.
- Recheck after updates. App and operating-system updates can change settings, labels, or behavior.
Can an app read my letters aloud without uploading them?
It may be possible, but the title alone cannot establish that for a particular app. A built-in accessibility reader may use device text-to-speech, while another reader may send content to a service. Check the feature’s documentation and privacy policy for the specific app and circumstances.
Apple documents Accessibility Reader on iPhone as a way to display or speak text from apps. Its controls are under Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak; the feature includes options such as autoplay and display customization. Some Apple Intelligence features described on Apple’s support page depend on device, operating-system version, language, and region. See Apple’s iPhone Accessibility Reader guide.
Microsoft documents a specific offline case for Office: Read Aloud uses the text-to-speech functionality provided by the device when Office is offline. That statement applies to the documented condition, not every Office use or every reading app. Microsoft also describes connected-experience scenarios. See Microsoft’s Office Read Aloud documentation.

How do I stop an app from saving text it reads?
Look in the app’s privacy policy and settings for retention, deletion, and service-improvement terms. If the app does not offer a clear way to disable retention or content use, its settings may not let you guarantee that letter text is not saved. Avoid submitting especially sensitive content unless you understand the app’s stated handling.
Do not treat microphone permission or online speech-recognition controls as a solution to text retention. Windows distinguishes device-based and online speech recognition, but those controls address recognition of speech input. They do not, by themselves, establish how a separate app handles text it reads aloud. See Microsoft’s Windows speech, voice activation, inking, typing, and privacy documentation.

Which built-in settings can help?
iPhone accessibility reading
Apple’s current iPhone support page documents Accessibility Reader and the Settings path Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak. Apple’s developer documentation also identifies Speak Selection and Speak Screen among speech-related accessibility features in Accessibility settings. These are options to consider before installing a separate reader, but whether they suit you depends on the text, language, and device. See Apple’s accessibility documentation for developers.
Apple Siri and third-party apps
Apple says Siri and Dictation processing can occur on-device or on Apple servers, depending on the feature and settings. Apple also says that when Siri interacts with a third-party app or service, that app’s or service’s terms and privacy policy apply. These statements are about Siri and Dictation; they are not a blanket description of every iPhone read-aloud feature or every app. Check the actual app’s policy. See Apple’s Siri and Dictation privacy information.

Can people nearby hear what my reading app is saying?
Yes. If the device plays the letter through a speaker, someone nearby may hear it. Use private audio playback or listen somewhere private when the content is sensitive. This addresses who can hear the sound, not what the app may process or retain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two reading options
When deciding between a built-in reader and an app’s own feature, compare the points that affect both data handling and usability. The available Apple and Microsoft documentation does not provide a complete comparative audit of third-party letter-reading apps, so it cannot support a general ranking of unnamed apps.
