Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want turn-by-turn directions, an offline map app may be enough. If you want a searchable record of places you have visited, you need a location-history tool that records and stores a timeline. Those are different jobs: Organic Maps and OsmAnd focus on navigation; Dawarich, OwnTracks, and Traccar can build or display a location history. Apple Maps also offers an opt-in Visited Places feature.
What counts as a location-history alternative?
A navigation app helps you find a route or browse a map. A location-history app records where a device has been so you can revisit trips and past places. Some tools do both, but an offline map does not automatically create a personal, searchable timeline.
Before switching, decide whether you need directions, a visit archive, or both. Then compare where precise location points are stored, who can access them, how long they remain, and whether you can export or import your records.
- For offline navigation: consider Organic Maps or OsmAnd.
- For an Apple-managed visit record: consider Apple Maps Visited Places.
- For a detailed timeline: consider Dawarich, or configure OwnTracks or Traccar with a server.
Review the history you already have
Google Maps Timeline
Google says Timeline is off by default and must be enabled by opting in. When enabled, it regularly saves precise device location on each participating device, even when Google apps are not open. Google provides controls to turn Timeline off, delete some or all of its data, and set auto-delete. The available controls may differ between accounts because Google says its Search services settings are being updated gradually. Google Maps Help: Manage your Google Maps Timeline.

Deleting a Timeline visit does not necessarily remove related information held under other settings: Google cautions that searches, interactions, or photos may still be saved. It also says Timeline visits to certain places it identifies as particularly personal are deleted soon after identification, while warning that some place designations may not be up to date. If you are switching, check the export and import route before deleting your existing archive.
Apple Maps Visited Places
Apple’s Visited Places is an optional feature that applies to places visited after you enable it, and you can choose a retention period. Apple says: “Your Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.” That statement concerns Visited Places and related synced Maps data for users signed in with two-factor authentication; it does not mean Apple Maps never processes location. Maps may send request information, including location when permitted, and some route requests include an origin, current location, and destination. Apple Maps & Privacy.

Offline navigation alternatives
Organic Maps
Organic Maps provides offline, OpenStreetMap-based maps and navigation. Privacy Guides describes it as having no tracking, data collection, or ads. It is a navigation choice, not a replacement for a searchable personal visit timeline. Privacy Guides also notes that it lacks features some users expect, including satellite imagery, street view, and real-time traffic. Privacy Guides: Maps.

OsmAnd
OsmAnd also provides offline OpenStreetMap-based maps and navigation, with a broader set of navigation functions to explore. Do not treat it as telemetry-free: Privacy Guides notes a rotating UUID used for internal reporting and map downloads, as well as anonymous-data settings that vary by platform. Review the privacy and analytics options for the version you use. Like Organic Maps, OsmAnd is principally a navigation alternative rather than a ready-made archive of every visit. Tools for a searchable location timeline
Dawarich: a timeline with import options
Dawarich is designed to visualize location history and trips, and its documentation describes imports that include Google Timeline and OwnTracks formats. It offers self-hosted installation and a cloud service, with documented iOS and Android apps. Its Android documentation says the app records location on-device and uploads it to Dawarich Cloud or a self-hosted instance; treat offline recording and background behavior as vendor-described rather than independently verified. An instruction manual is included. If you're concerned about understanding it, you can watch the video tutorial on our page.
Choose self-hosting if you are prepared to install, update, secure, and maintain the service. Choose the hosted option if you prefer not to operate a server, recognizing that the provider then stores the history. Before relying on an import, confirm that the current importer accepts your export and determine how you can export or delete the resulting archive.
OwnTracks: a configurable tracker
OwnTracks does not send location data to a location server until you configure a destination. It can send data through MQTT with TLS client certificates and supports optional payload encryption. This makes it a flexible tracking component, not a turnkey timeline service by itself: you must choose and configure a receiving server or broker and a way to view and retain records. Reverse geolocation is a separate consideration. OwnTracks says it uses Apple infrastructure on iOS and Google Play services for its non-open-source Android build; it also supports an optional OpenCage configuration. Review those dependencies alongside your chosen destination.
Traccar: a client and server for history and reports
Traccar provides a tracking client and a server that can run on your own hardware or in the cloud. Its product documentation describes location history and reports. The client sends tracking reports to the server you configure, which may be operated by you, Traccar, an organization, or another provider. The server operator controls access and retention; use a server you trust and HTTPS where supported. Traccar warns that HTTP may not encrypt delivery, and uninstalling or stopping the client does not delete reports already sent. Traccar.
Traccar’s client privacy policy, effective September 21, 2026, separately discloses Firebase-based analytics, crash reporting, and messaging in distributed builds. These are distinct from the location reports sent to the configured server. Read the current policy and server operator’s terms before choosing a destination. Traccar Client Privacy Policy.

What self-hosting changes—and what it does not
Self-hosting lets you operate the server that stores your history, but it does not make location data inherently safe. Anyone who gains access to the server, its backups, or an account with access may be able to see sensitive movement patterns. You also take responsibility for updates, network security, retention, and recovery.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Protect access: use strong account credentials and restrict who can reach the service.
- Encrypt delivery: configure HTTPS or the tracker’s supported secure transport; do not send location reports over unencrypted HTTP.
- Set retention deliberately: decide how much history you need and check whether deletion applies to backups as well as the active database.
- Plan for maintenance: keep the server and its software updated, and know how you would restore or permanently remove its data.
A managed service avoids much of the server administration, but shifts storage and operational trust to its provider. Decide whether that tradeoff suits your threat model before uploading a long-term archive.
Quick Recap
Switch without losing the archive
- Export first. Preserve a copy of the existing history before changing settings or deleting records.
- Check the exact import format. Verify that the destination currently supports your export format and learn what data may not transfer.
- Test a short interval. Import a limited sample and confirm that dates, places, and trips appear as expected.
- Check deletion and retention. Confirm how to remove data from the new service and whether its backups follow the same retention rules.
- Only then disable the old source. Keep the original archive until you have confirmed that the new timeline contains what you need.
