Short answer: Choose Joplin if running AI locally is your main requirement; its official documentation explicitly supports local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Choose Anytype if you want an encrypted, database-like workspace with local-only and self-hosted backup options. Choose Obsidian for the simplest account-free local Markdown vault, but inspect every AI plugin or provider yourself. Logseq is worth considering for linked knowledge management, although its current official material is less specific about local AI and cloudless synchronization.
A private setup requires more than installing a privacy-oriented app. You must also choose where inference runs, disable unwanted synchronization, review plugin network access, and maintain encrypted backups that you can restore.

What a no-cloud AI note workflow actually requires
“No cloud storage” can describe several different goals. Decide which one matters to you before selecting an app:
- No remote copy of the notes: your files stay on your device, with backups written only to storage you control.
- No remote AI processing: prompts, retrieved passages, attachments, and generated responses never go to an online model provider.
- No vendor account: the note application does not require an identity or sign-in for ordinary use.
- No unsolicited telemetry: usage events and diagnostics are not sent unless you deliberately enable them.
- Recoverability: a lost laptop does not destroy the only copy of your notes.
These goals are related but not identical. A local vault can still be sent to a remote AI plugin. Encrypted synchronization can still place ciphertext on a server or backup node. A local model can still access a note that another plugin has already uploaded. Treat storage, inference, synchronization, plugins, and backups as separate decisions.
Joplin: the best-documented route to local AI
Joplin is the strongest choice when the deciding question is, “Can I use AI without sending my notes to an AI service?” Its official AI privacy article states that Joplin does not send your notes to an AI service by default. AI features are disabled by default, you select the provider, and the documentation names Ollama and LM Studio as local-model options.

How Joplin keeps the default conservative
Joplin’s privacy policy says its apps do not send data to services without authorization and that notes or images are saved to your device. This gives you a local baseline: installing the app does not, by itself, enroll your notes in an AI service. Any optional feature that contacts a third party becomes a separate decision.
Cloud synchronization is optional. If you enable it, the synchronized copy is governed by the provider you select. That means a local-only Joplin installation and a Joplin notebook synchronized through an online service are different privacy configurations, even though the note editor is the same.
Using a local model with Joplin
The exact controls can change between Joplin releases and AI integrations, so confirm the labels in your installed version. The privacy-preserving sequence is:

- Install Joplin and create a local notebook. Keep synchronization disabled while you establish the workflow.
- Install a local model runner. Joplin’s documentation specifically identifies Ollama and LM Studio. Run the runner on the same computer or on a private machine reachable only from your network.
- Download a model to that runner. Model files, memory requirements, and license terms vary; choose one your hardware can run without forwarding prompts to a hosted endpoint.
- Open Joplin’s AI settings and select the local provider. Enter the local endpoint supplied by Ollama or LM Studio, then choose the downloaded model. Do not select a hosted provider if the requirement is zero remote processing.
- Test with a harmless note. Check the runner’s activity or logs and your computer’s network monitor. Confirm that requests stay on the loopback address or your private-network address before analyzing confidential material.
“Local” here means the model receives the note on your device or private network. It does not mean that every Joplin extension, attachment handler, spell checker, or backup destination is automatically local.

Joplin trade-offs
- Strength: the vendor makes the local-AI option explicit and says AI is off until you choose a provider.
- Strength: the app can remain useful without cloud synchronization.
- Limitation: selecting a cloud AI provider sends the relevant note content to that provider under its policy.
- Limitation: enabling synchronization creates another copy whose privacy depends on the chosen service.
- Operational cost: local inference uses your own CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and electricity, and you must update the model runner yourself.
Anytype: encrypted local-first pages and databases
Anytype is the most compelling option when “notes” also means objects, collections, databases, and structured pages. Its product information describes local, on-device encryption, user-controlled keys, offline account creation, peer-to-peer synchronization on local networks, and self-hosted backup nodes. Its FAQ says data is stored locally first and encrypted before leaving the device.
Storage and key ownership
The architecture is local-first rather than cloud-first. You can select local-only mode, keeping the vault on your devices, or choose synchronization and backup destinations that you control. Because keys are user-controlled, losing the key material or recovery information can make the data unrecoverable; privacy and recoverability must be planned together.
Anytype’s product page summarizes its privacy promise as, “Nobody can see what’s in your vault, except for you.” Read that statement in context: encrypted synchronization still involves the devices or backup nodes you select, and anyone who gains access to an unlocked device can read the notes while they are available to the application.
Local-network and self-hosted options
- Local-only mode: use this when you do not want synchronization or a backup node involved.
- Peer-to-peer local sync: synchronize devices over a network you control rather than a public relay, where supported by your configuration.
- Self-hosted backup node: keep an encrypted backup on hardware you administer. Protect that machine, its disks, and its administrator credentials.
Before relying on any mode, create a test object, synchronize or back it up, disconnect the network, and restore it on a second device. This verifies both the practical behavior and your recovery procedure without exposing real confidential notes.

AI considerations
The cited Anytype material establishes local-first storage and encryption, not that every AI capability operates locally. If an AI feature is supplied by an extension, integration, or remote provider, inspect its endpoint and data policy separately. A private vault does not prevent an add-on from exporting selected text.

Obsidian: the simplest local-vault choice
Obsidian’s privacy advantage is straightforward: notes live in a local Markdown vault, no account is required, and its security page says no telemetry data is collected. The same page reports penetration testing and source-code auditing of its applications.
Why the vault model is useful
A folder of Markdown files is easy to copy, archive, inspect, and migrate. You can place it on an encrypted disk, include it in a backup rotation, or keep it entirely offline. The application does not require a vendor account for ordinary vault use, so you can start with a local directory and add services only when you choose.
The AI-plugin boundary
Obsidian’s cited security page does not establish that every AI feature is local. Plugins are separate software with their own network behavior and provider choices. Before installing one:

- Determine whether it calls a hosted API, a local model runner, or both.
- Check whether indexing occurs locally and whether embeddings or caches are uploaded.
- Review requested permissions and source availability where provided.
- Run a network monitor while sending a test note that contains no sensitive information.
- Disable or remove the plugin if its traffic does not match your threat model.
For a truly local setup, point the integration at a model running on your computer or private network and keep online synchronization disabled. Do not assume that a local vault makes a remote plugin private.
Logseq: a candidate for linked knowledge management
Logseq is designed as a knowledge-base application and is a reasonable candidate for readers who organize information through linked pages and outlines. The official downloads material establishes the application and its knowledge-management positioning, but the available official documentation is not equally specific about current built-in local AI, complete cloud-storage behavior, or all account and telemetry settings.
How to evaluate Logseq before storing sensitive notes
- Confirm where the graph files are written on each operating system you use.
- Identify whether the synchronization method is local, peer-to-peer, self-hosted, or mediated by a hosted service.
- Check whether the AI feature you intend to use is built in, supplied by a plugin, or connected to a remote provider.
- Inspect the plugin’s network destinations and disable integrations that transmit note content.
- Perform an offline test: disconnect the network, open the graph, create a page, and verify which features still work.
Until those checks are complete, describe Logseq as a local knowledge-management option rather than claiming it is a fully cloudless AI notebook.

Build a no-cloud workflow step by step
1. Define the boundary
Write down what must never leave your devices. Include page text, attachments, OCR output, handwriting transcriptions, embeddings, search indexes, prompts, and generated answers. If metadata is sensitive, include filenames, timestamps, and synchronization logs as well.

Install the app, create a test notebook or vault, and leave cloud sync disabled. Add a harmless sample note and verify that it remains available after restarting the application without a network connection.
3. Select a local inference path
For Joplin, the documented choices are Ollama and LM Studio. For other apps, use a local integration only when its documentation identifies a local endpoint and explains how context is processed. Keep the model runner bound to the local machine or a private network, and restrict inbound access with your operating system firewall.
4. Audit every extension
Review plugins individually. A calendar connector, transcription tool, web clipper, grammar service, or image recognizer may transmit data even when the core note database is local. Remove features you cannot verify.
5. Protect the storage layer
Use full-disk encryption, a strong device passphrase, automatic screen locking, and separate user accounts when appropriate. Store backups on encrypted media. If you use a self-hosted node, patch its operating system, restrict administrator access, and do not expose management ports to the public internet.

Create a backup, disconnect the original device, restore it to a spare device or clean profile, and open representative notes and attachments. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

7. Add synchronization only after testing
If you need multiple devices, choose the narrowest method that meets the requirement: direct local-network transfer, a self-hosted encrypted node, or a provider whose policy you accept. Document which devices hold copies and how conflicts are resolved. Do not enable a service merely because the application offers a convenient toggle.

Which app should you choose?
Choose Joplin when local AI is non-negotiable

Anytype is the better fit when you need databases, relationships, and pages rather than a simple file-based notebook. Choose Obsidian for a portable local Markdown vault
Obsidian is attractive when account-free operation, local files, and a broad plugin ecosystem matter. Its privacy story is strongest for the core vault. Treat AI as an independent supply-chain and network question, not as a property inherited from the editor.
Consider Logseq for linked outlines, after verification
Logseq can suit a graph-oriented workflow, but the currently cited official material does not document local AI and cloudless synchronization with the same specificity. Confirm those details in the exact release and plugins you plan to deploy.
What the available evidence does—and does not—prove
The documented facts support a practical ranking for privacy-conscious buyers: Joplin offers the clearest local-AI path; Anytype offers the most explicit encrypted, local-first workspace controls; Obsidian offers the simplest account-free local vault; and Logseq remains a candidate that needs additional configuration checks.
None of these documents proves that a complete installation is private under every configuration. Privacy depends on the model endpoint, synchronization mode, plugins, operating-system security, backup destinations, and the people or services with access to unlocked devices. Configure those layers deliberately, then verify behavior with offline and network tests before importing your sensitive archive.
