There is no universal winner. Keep PostgreSQL with pgvector when your application already relies on relational joins, transactions, and SQL and your embedding collection is modest or mostly static. Choose a managed vector service such as Pinecone when vectors are growing or changing continuously and filtered retrieval must remain predictable. Choose MongoDB Atlas Vector Search when documents, metadata, and embeddings belong together in a managed document database. Evaluate Weaviate or Qdrant for hybrid retrieval, strong filtering, or self-hosting. Move to Milvus (or its managed Zilliz Cloud deployment) when distributed vector scale and throughput justify dedicated infrastructure.
The important distinction is whether you are replacing PostgreSQL entirely or moving only vector retrieval into a second system. In many production RAG systems, PostgreSQL remains the source of truth while a specialized index handles semantic search.
Start with the workload, not a leaderboard
“Best” depends on the shape of your AI workload. A support chatbot with 200,000 stable chunks and frequent joins to customer permissions has different requirements from a continuously updated catalog containing hundreds of millions of embeddings. Compare the systems on corpus size, update frequency, filter selectivity, recall, p95 and p99 latency, throughput, concurrency, deployment ownership, memory footprint, storage, and total operating cost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also decide whether your metadata filters are advisory or mandatory. A system that returns the nearest vectors first and filters afterward can silently omit valid results. If a query must return every match for a tenant, region, ACL, or product category, test filtered recall directly rather than assuming that an advertised vector score translates to complete results.

A practical decision tree
Keep PostgreSQL and add pgvector
Use this path when the corpus is small or mostly static, the application already stores transactional data in PostgreSQL, and SQL joins or ACID updates are central to the request path. One database means one backup policy, one permission model, and no synchronization pipeline between records and embeddings.
- Best fit: modest RAG corpora, recommendation features attached to relational entities, and prototypes that may remain moderate in size.
- Main advantage: joins, transactions, and ordinary SQL can be used beside similarity search.
- Main risk: vector indexing, memory use, and high-concurrency retrieval may become the limiting factor as the corpus and write rate grow.
Choose Pinecone for managed, changing vector collections
Pinecone is the clearest alternative when embeddings are growing, being replaced frequently, or need metadata-filtered retrieval with a managed operational model. It removes most index-server administration, but introduces a separate service, data-transfer paths, and commercial vendor dependency.
Choose MongoDB Atlas Vector Search for a document-centric stack
Atlas Vector Search fits teams that want source documents, flexible metadata, and embeddings in one managed document platform. It is especially natural when the application already models content as documents rather than normalized relational rows.
Evaluate Weaviate or Qdrant for retrieval features and self-hosting
Weaviate is notable for combining vector retrieval with BM25 hybrid search. Qdrant is a dedicated vector database known for filtering capabilities and a self-hosting option. Both make sense when your team can operate another service and needs retrieval behavior that is awkward to add to an OLTP-oriented PostgreSQL deployment.
Use Milvus or Zilliz Cloud at distributed vector scale
Milvus targets very large, distributed vector workloads. Zilliz Cloud is the associated managed deployment path. This family is appropriate only when vector scale or distributed throughput justifies specialized infrastructure and your team can run it or pay for managed operations.
At-a-glance comparison
| Option | Data model | Scale and change pattern | Filtering and hybrid search | Operations | Primary trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL + pgvector | Relational SQL, joins, transactions, vector column | Modest or mostly static corpora; writes remain part of OLTP workflows | SQL metadata predicates; hybrid ranking must be designed in the application or database | Use existing PostgreSQL administration | Fewest systems and simplest consistency model, but less specialized scaling |
| Pinecone | Vector-native managed service with metadata | Growing or continuously changing collections | Managed metadata filtering designed for retrieval workloads | Vendor-operated service | Operational simplicity and scale in exchange for service dependency and usage cost |
| MongoDB Atlas Vector Search | Managed documents, metadata, and vectors | Document collections that evolve with their associated embeddings | Vector search alongside document queries; validate filter behavior for your workload | Managed MongoDB deployment | One document platform, but not a relational SQL replacement |
| Weaviate | Open-source vector database | Teams needing dedicated retrieval capabilities | Hybrid BM25 plus vector search | Self-hosted or managed choices, depending on deployment | Richer retrieval options with another system to operate |
| Qdrant | Dedicated vector database | Filtered vector workloads where self-hosting economics matter | Strong metadata filtering; test filtered recall on your corpus | Self-hosting is available | Control and retrieval specialization versus added operational work |
| Milvus / Zilliz Cloud | Distributed vector database and managed service | Very large collections and distributed throughput | Vector-native retrieval; confirm the exact filter and hybrid features in your deployment | Distributed infrastructure or managed operation | Capacity for large scale at the cost of architectural complexity |
PostgreSQL with pgvector: the default when relational context matters
Why it remains a strong production choice
With pgvector, an embedding can live beside the row it describes. A retrieval query can constrain tenant ownership, publication status, language, or permissions in the same SQL statement that computes similarity. Updates can commit the business record and its embedding together, avoiding a period in which a vector index points to stale or unauthorized content.
This arrangement is particularly effective when retrieval is only one step in a larger transaction. For example, a support answer may need the nearest passages, the account’s plan, the document’s current visibility, and a row-level access check. Keeping those relationships in PostgreSQL avoids rebuilding them in a second database.

Where pgvector starts to strain
The pressure appears when the vector corpus becomes large, writes are continuous, or many simultaneous searches compete with transactional traffic for CPU, memory, and I/O. A vector index can also make capacity planning less obvious: raw embedding bytes are not the whole footprint, and index structures, caches, replicas, and ordinary table storage all consume resources.
Do not infer that a large row count automatically requires migration. Measure recall and tail latency under your actual filters and concurrency. A static corpus with predictable traffic may remain economical in PostgreSQL long after a continuously mutating corpus would benefit from a dedicated service.
How to decide whether pgvector is “good enough” for RAG
- Establish a labeled question-and-answer set and measure whether the expected source chunk appears in the top-k results.
- Run the test with the same tenant, ACL, language, and status predicates used in production.
- Measure p95 and p99 latency while writes, vacuuming, backups, and ordinary application queries are active.
- Check whether index maintenance and memory growth fit the existing PostgreSQL operating budget.
If these tests meet your quality and latency targets, staying in PostgreSQL is often the lowest-risk architecture. If they fail because of vector-specific scale rather than SQL modeling, move retrieval while leaving PostgreSQL as the system of record.
Pinecone: managed retrieval for growing and frequently updated embeddings
When its operating model fits
A managed vector service is attractive when the team does not want to tune index nodes, shard collections, or schedule capacity changes. Pinecone’s positioning is strongest for collections that grow or change continuously and for applications that depend on metadata-filtered retrieval returning complete results.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You still need a source-of-truth database. Store document identity, authorization state, ingestion status, and audit information in your primary application store, then propagate the searchable text, vector, and filterable metadata to Pinecone. Design retries and reconciliation because an embedding write and a business-record update are no longer one transaction.
Interpret its published memory figure correctly
Pinecone reported that, in an April 2024 benchmark across four public datasets, index memory ranged from 1.2 times to more than five times the raw dataset size. That is a vendor-reported result for those datasets and settings, not a universal capacity multiplier. Your dimensionality, index configuration, metadata, replicas, and data distribution can produce a different footprint. Use the figure only as a reminder to budget index memory above raw vector bytes and then measure your own collection.
Costs and lock-in questions
Managed operation trades infrastructure labor for service charges and dependency on the provider’s APIs, regions, limits, and availability model. Before committing, verify export procedures, acceptable downtime for re-indexing, data residency, retention behavior, and the cost of idle capacity as well as query volume. A dual-write period can make migration safer but temporarily doubles write paths and monitoring.

MongoDB Atlas Vector Search: keep documents and embeddings together
Why document teams consider it
Atlas Vector Search is a natural candidate when each searchable item is already a document containing text, product attributes, permissions, and an embedding. The application can retrieve semantically similar documents without maintaining a separate document store and vector store.

If your critical queries depend on complex joins, foreign-key integrity, or mature SQL reporting, moving only the vector workload may be less disruptive than moving all application data. If your data is inherently document-shaped and already runs in Atlas, consolidating retrieval there can reduce synchronization work.
Understand the scale example
MongoDB documentation includes a configuration example for 10 million 1,024-dimensional embeddings using binary quantization. It is an illustration of how to configure a deployment, not a promise of identical production latency, recall, or cost. Quantization reduces representation size but can alter nearest-neighbor ordering, so compare answer quality against an unquantized baseline on your own queries.
Questions to test
- Can the index apply your tenant and authorization filters without unacceptable recall loss?
- Do document updates and embedding updates arrive at a rate the chosen cluster can absorb?
- Is the document query model expressive enough for post-retrieval enrichment, or will another database still be required?
Weaviate and Qdrant: dedicated retrieval without giving up self-hosting
Weaviate and hybrid BM25 plus vector search
Weaviate is worth evaluating when lexical matching matters alongside semantic similarity. BM25 can preserve exact product names, error codes, and uncommon identifiers that an embedding may blur, while vector search handles paraphrases. Hybrid ranking is only useful if you tune the blend and test it on queries containing both natural language and exact terms.
Qdrant and filtered vector search
Qdrant is a candidate when metadata filters are central and self-hosting economics or data-control requirements rule out a fully managed service. Test filtered recall rather than only unfiltered nearest-neighbor accuracy. A filter that selects a small portion of the corpus can change latency and candidate availability substantially.
The Tool Desk

Self-hosting means owning backups, upgrades, observability, capacity planning, failure recovery, security patches, and index rebuilds. A managed offering may reduce that burden, but it does not remove the need to understand shard behavior, replication, filter selectivity, and re-indexing time. Choose these databases when retrieval behavior or deployment control is valuable enough to justify another production system.
Milvus and Zilliz Cloud: for distributed vector scale
Milvus is designed for distributed vector workloads that exceed the comfortable operating range of a single relational database or a small vector service. Zilliz Cloud provides a managed path for teams that need Milvus-style architecture without running every cluster component themselves.

This option should follow evidence of a distributed requirement: very large collections, sustained parallel query throughput, or growth that cannot be handled by vertical scaling and simpler services. Distributed systems add network hops, shard placement, capacity coordination, and more failure modes. If your corpus is moderate, the extra architecture can cost more in engineering time than it saves in query performance.
How to compare candidates fairly
Use a workload scorecard
| Dimension | Questions to answer | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Corpus | How many vectors exist now, and how many are expected in 12–24 months? | Vector count, dimensions, metadata size, raw storage, and index memory |
| Change rate | Are embeddings inserted once, updated in batches, or continuously replaced? | Inserts, updates, deletes, and rebuild time per hour or day |
| Filtering | Which predicates are mandatory, and how selective are they? | Recall and latency for common tenant, ACL, language, and status filters |
| Quality | What result must appear in the top-k list? | Recall@k, nDCG or another agreed relevance measure, plus downstream answer quality |
| Performance | What happens at peak concurrency? | p50, p95, and p99 latency; throughput; timeout and error rates |
| Operations | Who handles upgrades, backups, incidents, and capacity? | On-call effort, recovery objectives, deployment process, and observability coverage |
| Economics | What is the full recurring cost? | Compute, memory, storage, replicas, network transfer, licenses, and engineering time |
Do not rely on vendor rankings
Vendor benchmarks are directional. They may use different hardware, index settings, vector dimensions, data distributions, filter patterns, and concurrency levels. An independent 2025 comparison by Inductivee reported tests with 100 million 768-dimensional vectors, but that setup is not a vendor-neutral benchmark standard and its ranking should not be generalized to every workload.

A representative benchmark procedure
- Freeze the corpus definition. Export a representative sample or a full anonymized collection with the same embedding dimensionality, metadata fields, and proportion of long and short documents used in production.
- Create a relevance set. Gather real queries and label which documents are acceptable answers. Include exact names, paraphrases, multilingual requests, empty-result cases, and permission-restricted queries.
- Replay production filters. Test common and worst-case tenant, ACL, language, date, and status predicates. Record whether the required result exists in the returned candidate set.
- Model update churn. Insert new vectors, update existing embeddings, delete documents, and change metadata while searches continue. Measure freshness lag and failed or duplicate records.
- Measure tails under concurrency. Run realistic read concurrency together with writes and background maintenance. Capture p50, p95, p99, throughput, timeouts, and error rates rather than a single average.
- Measure quality before tuning. Record recall@k and downstream answer quality with a known index configuration, then vary index parameters and quantization. Keep quality and latency results paired.
- Price the whole design. Include replicas, backups, staging, network transfer, observability, migration tooling, and on-call labor. A low query price can be offset by duplicated storage or synchronization code.
- Test recovery. Restore a backup, rebuild an index, replay a missed event, and fail over a node or service. Record the time and data loss, not just whether the test eventually succeeded.
Migration patterns and common failure modes
Keep PostgreSQL as the source of truth
The least disruptive pattern is to retain documents, permissions, and lifecycle state in PostgreSQL while sending a searchable projection to the vector system. Give every vector a stable document identifier and an embedding-model version. Consumers can then reject stale results and re-embed only the affected records when the model changes.
Use an outbox or change stream for synchronization
Do not depend on an application request successfully writing two databases in sequence. Record an outbox event with the business transaction, deliver it asynchronously, retry failures, and run a reconciliation job that compares source records with vector records. During migration, dual-read or shadow-read the new index and compare result quality before switching traffic.
Watch for stale permissions
Deleting a document from a source table does not instantly remove its vector from a second service. Enforce authorization at retrieval time, propagate deletes promptly, and monitor the age of the oldest unprocessed event. Treat a stale ACL as a security incident, not merely a relevance defect.
Plan embedding-model changes
Vectors from different models or dimensions should not be mixed casually. Build a new namespace or collection, backfill it, benchmark it against the current index, and switch readers only after the new results meet the quality target. Retain the old index until rollback is no longer needed.
Avoid optimizing only for raw nearest-neighbor speed
Fast unfiltered searches can still produce poor RAG answers if filters remove the relevant passage, exact identifiers are missed, or updates are stale. Evaluate the complete path from query embedding through filtering, reranking, prompt construction, and answer grounding.

Bottom-line recommendations by scenario
- Existing relational application, modest or stable corpus: start and often stay with PostgreSQL plus pgvector.
- Continuously changing corpus and preference for managed operations: shortlist Pinecone and compare its filtered recall, tail latency, and total cost with your current system.
- Documents and metadata already live in a managed document platform: test MongoDB Atlas Vector Search before introducing a separate vector service.
- Need BM25 hybrid retrieval or self-hosting: evaluate Weaviate and Qdrant with your filters and update churn.
- Very large, distributed vector workload: investigate Milvus or Zilliz Cloud, but require evidence that simpler architectures cannot meet the target.
The safest migration is evidence-driven: benchmark representative data, keep a durable source of truth, and move only the part of the workload that has demonstrated a need for specialized scaling.
Frequently asked questions
Is pgvector suitable for a production RAG application?
Yes, when measured recall, filtered retrieval, tail latency, update freshness, and PostgreSQL resource usage meet the application’s targets. Production status alone does not require a dedicated vector database; workload growth and operational limits are the deciding factors.
Should a vector database replace PostgreSQL?
Usually not. PostgreSQL can remain the authoritative store for documents, permissions, billing state, and audit history while a vector system serves retrieval. Replace PostgreSQL only when the broader application no longer benefits from relational transactions and joins.
What does Pinecone’s 1.2x-to-more-than-5x memory result mean for capacity planning?
It is a Pinecone-reported April 2024 result across four public datasets. Use it as a warning that index memory can greatly exceed raw vector bytes, then measure your own dimensions, metadata, index settings, replicas, and distribution.
Is binary quantization automatically safe for RAG?
No. It can reduce representation size, but it may change nearest-neighbor ordering. Compare recall and downstream answer quality with and without quantization on the queries and filters that matter to your application.
How can I migrate without serving stale or unauthorized content?
Keep stable document identifiers and embedding versions, propagate inserts and deletes through a durable outbox or change stream, enforce authorization during retrieval, monitor synchronization lag, and shadow-read the new index before changing the production reader.
