For most homes, start with a portable power station around 1,000Wh and at least 1,500W of continuous AC output. That class can cover a refrigerator or freezer, modem/router, lights and device charging for a short outage when the unit has enough surge capacity for compressor startup. Choose roughly 1,800–4,000Wh, a stronger surge rating and a recharge plan when you must run a well or sump pump, several appliances, or essential loads for more than a day.

The right choice depends on measured watt draw, compressor or motor startup, battery losses, temperature and battery age—not the watt-hour label alone.

Quick recommendations by outage scenario

Situation Starting specification Why
Refrigerator or freezer, networking, lights and phones during a short outage About 1,000Wh; at least 1,500W continuous AC; adequate compressor surge Provides a practical short-duration essential-load reserve while leaving inverter headroom for startup.
Refrigerator plus CPAP, lighting and networking overnight About 1,000Wh if measured average demand is modest; otherwise move to 1,800Wh or more Sleep equipment and a cycling refrigerator consume energy over many hours, so measured duty cycle matters.
Sump or well pump, or several motor loads 1,800–4,000Wh or more, with a high surge rating Motor startup can trip an undersized inverter even when the pump’s running wattage looks acceptable.
Essential circuits for a multi-day outage Expandable battery system, solar input and professionally installed transfer equipment Extra storage and a way to recharge are more important than a single large nameplate.

These are planning bands, not guarantees. Confirm every appliance’s running and startup requirements and the station’s usable AC energy before buying.

What the important ratings actually mean

Watt-hours determine duration

Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy. A 1,000Wh label does not mean 1,000Wh will reach your AC appliances: the inverter and other conversion stages consume some energy, and temperature and battery age affect the result. Use the station’s published usable-energy or runtime figures when available, and leave a margin rather than planning to drain the battery completely.

Continuous watts determine what can run

Continuous AC output is the load the inverter can sustain. Add the running wattage of appliances you intend to operate simultaneously and keep that total below the station’s continuous rating. A station can have ample Wh yet shut down if its inverter cannot supply the required watts.

Surge watts determine whether motors start

Refrigerator compressors, freezers, sump pumps and well pumps draw a brief starting surge. Compare the appliance’s locked-rotor or startup requirement with the station’s surge specification, not just its running wattage. If the manufacturer does not publish a startup figure, measure it with a suitable power meter or ask an electrician; do not assume a similarly sized appliance has the same surge.

Usable AC energy is lower than the label

Inverter losses, conversion losses and the station’s reserve cutoff reduce delivered energy. A simple planning equation is:

Estimated runtime (hours) ≈ usable AC watt-hours ÷ average appliance watts.

For a cycling appliance, use its average over a representative period rather than the instantaneous reading while the compressor is on. Treat the result as an estimate and verify it with a controlled test.

How much capacity do your appliances need?

Refrigerators and freezers

Record both the compressor’s running watts and its startup behavior. The compressor cycles, so a nameplate wattage multiplied by the entire outage duration overstates or understates the result depending on the duty cycle and ambient temperature. Keep the refrigerator closed, allow ventilation around the appliance and test the station with the actual refrigerator before an emergency.

EcoFlow’s DELTA Pro 3 page gives a specific manufacturer scenario: 27.3 hours for a 120W refrigerator. That figure is not a promise for every refrigerator; it reflects the stated appliance and test conditions, and real runtime changes with cycling, losses and temperature.

CPAP equipment

Find the CPAP’s input wattage in its label or power-adapter documentation. Humidifiers and heated hoses can materially increase demand, so record a night with the accessories enabled if you plan to use them. If the CPAP accepts low-voltage DC and the station offers a compatible regulated output, compare that option with AC: avoiding an extra inverter stage may improve efficiency, but voltage, connector and polarity must match exactly.

Modems, routers and networking equipment

Networking loads are small compared with pumps, but they run continuously. A UPS-capable station is useful because a short transfer interruption can reboot a modem or router. The DELTA 3 Plus specification reported by TechRadar is a 10ms UPS switchover; check whether your equipment tolerates that transfer time and whether the station’s UPS mode is available on the outlets you will use.

Lights and device charging

List each lamp, charger and small appliance and decide which must operate at the same time. USB charging can avoid an AC adapter’s conversion loss, but only when the voltage and connector are correct. Keep a separate low-power lighting plan so the inverter is not running unnecessarily for a single phone charger.

Sump and well pumps

Pumps combine high running wattage with a potentially larger startup surge. EcoFlow’s DELTA Pro 3 example is 2.7 hours for a 1,200W well pump; it is a manufacturer scenario and should not be generalized to a different pump, head height or cycling pattern. Verify both the station’s surge capability and the pump’s starting requirement. If flooding is a risk, consider a dedicated battery-backed pump or a professionally designed transfer system rather than relying on one portable unit.

A step-by-step sizing method

  1. Inventory essential loads. Write down the refrigerator or freezer, CPAP, networking gear, lights, medical equipment and pumps. Separate loads that must run continuously from those used only for short periods.
  2. Read every nameplate. Capture volts, amps, running watts and any locked-rotor or startup value. Where a label gives volts and amps, watts are approximately volts multiplied by amps; an electrician should resolve power-factor or motor-rating questions.
  3. Measure real consumption. Use a plug-in meter for corded appliances and record average watts over a full compressor cycle or a representative night. Do not place an ordinary plug meter in a wet location or use it on equipment that requires professional measurement.
  4. Build the energy budget. Multiply each load’s measured average watts by the hours it must operate, then add the intermittent loads. Add margin for inverter losses, cold weather and battery aging instead of treating the rated Wh as fully usable.
  5. Check simultaneous power. Add the running watts of loads that may start together. Compare that total with continuous AC output.
  6. Check startup surge. Compare each compressor or motor’s startup requirement with the station’s surge rating. If the figures are close, choose more headroom or stagger starts; do not depend on a borderline match.
  7. Choose recharge capacity. For outages longer than the initial battery reserve, plan grid charging, solar charging or an additional battery. A large battery without a recharge path eventually becomes an expensive timer.
  8. Validate before an outage. Test the exact cords, outlets, UPS mode and appliance sequence. Record the measured runtime and keep the result with the emergency supplies.

Runtime planning with real examples

Suppose your measured average load is 120W. The basic equation divides usable Wh by 120W; however, a refrigerator does not draw 120W continuously, so the average over its cycles is the meaningful figure. The DELTA Pro 3 manufacturer’s 27.3-hour refrigerator example should be treated as a reference scenario, not as a conversion of the station’s entire rated capacity.

For a 1,200W pump, the same arithmetic produces a much shorter runtime because the load is ten times higher than 120W. EcoFlow reports 2.7 hours for its stated well-pump example. A different pump may cycle for only a few minutes at a time, in which case stored energy lasts longer, but each restart still has to fit within the surge rating.

When no manufacturer runtime is available, measure average watts, multiply by required hours and then select the next larger capacity class. A spreadsheet with columns for appliance, measured watts, hours per day, duty cycle, startup watts and recharge method prevents the common mistake of sizing solely from a refrigerator’s label.

UPS operation and sensitive electronics

A power station’s UPS mode can keep a router, computer or network-attached storage device online when utility power fails. Transfer time is the interval while the station switches from grid passthrough to battery. TechRadar reports 10ms for the DELTA 3 Plus. That is useful information, but compatibility is still equipment-specific: some devices ride through the transfer while others reboot.

Connect only the devices that need UPS behavior, confirm the manual’s outlet limitations and test by unplugging the station from the wall. If a computer reboots, use a conventional UPS for that device or move it to a station and mode explicitly rated for the required transfer performance.

Recharge options for a long outage

Utility charging

Grid charging is usually the fastest way to refill a portable station when utility service returns. Charge before storm season, verify the unit’s input settings and avoid extension cords that are underrated for the charging current.

Solar charging

Solar panels can extend a multi-day outage when sunlight, panel placement and the station’s solar-input limits align. Confirm the panel voltage range, maximum input watts, connector type and whether panels may be wired in series or parallel. Clouds, shade, winter sun and panel temperature reduce production, so solar should be treated as a variable recharge source rather than a guaranteed daily refill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expansion batteries

Expansion batteries increase stored energy without replacing the main inverter. They are useful when the inverter already meets your surge and continuous-watt requirements but the outage lasts longer than the base battery. Check which battery generations and firmware versions are compatible; capacity is not interchangeable across product families.

Home integration

Smart panels, transfer switches and inlet boxes can connect selected circuits to a larger portable system. EcoFlow documents Smart Home Panel integration and solar expansion for applicable systems. These are electrical installations, not plug-in accessories: an electrician must verify panel compatibility, transfer behavior, grounding and local code requirements.

Portable station, combustion generator or installed battery?

Option Strength Limit to understand Installation and safety
Portable battery station Quiet, no fuel storage and easy to move; suitable for selected plug-in loads. Finite energy reserve; recharge depends on the grid or available solar. Follow the manual’s ventilation, charging and temperature requirements. Never use damaged cables or a wet unit.
Combustion generator Can run for extended periods when fuel is available. Produces exhaust and noise and requires fuel management. Never operate indoors, in a garage or near doors and windows. Use approved outdoor placement, carbon-monoxide protection and code-compliant transfer equipment.
Permanently installed home battery Can automate selected circuits or whole-home backup with a fixed electrical connection. Higher installation complexity and less portability. Requires permitted electrical work, compatible equipment and professional commissioning.

A portable station is not automatically a substitute for either a generator or an installed battery. Select the technology according to runtime, motor loads, portability, noise, fuel and installation requirements.

Installation and connection rules

  • Power appliances directly from the station unless a listed transfer device is installed.
  • Never backfeed a wall outlet with a male-to-male cord. Backfeeding can energize utility lines and injure workers.
  • Use a transfer switch or inlet box installed to local electrical code when connecting circuits in a breaker panel.
  • Have an electrician verify neutral bonding, grounding, circuit ratings and the station’s compatibility with the transfer equipment.
  • Keep the station dry, shaded and within the temperature range in its manual. Do not cover ventilation openings.
  • Inspect cords for heat, damage or loose connections during operation.

Common failure modes and fixes

The station shuts off when the refrigerator starts

The inverter may be undersized for startup surge even though the battery has plenty of Wh. Disconnect other loads, let the compressor rest and retry. If it still trips, use a station with a higher surge rating or obtain the compressor’s measured startup requirement; increasing battery capacity alone will not fix an inverter limit.

Runtime is far shorter than the calculation

Check whether you used rated rather than usable Wh, included the station’s own idle draw, assumed a constant refrigerator load or ignored a heated CPAP humidifier. Repeat the test with one appliance at a time and record average watts over several cycles.

The router reboots during an outage

Confirm that UPS mode is enabled, the router is connected to a UPS-rated outlet and the transfer time is suitable. If it still reboots, place the router on a dedicated UPS designed for networking equipment or use a station with a documented faster transfer mode.

The pump runs but stops after a few starts

High startup current can trigger overload protection, while a large running load rapidly drains the battery. Verify surge and continuous ratings, stagger other loads and plan a larger or expandable system. For flood-critical applications, install a professionally designed backup pump arrangement.

Solar charging is intermittent

Inspect shade, connector polarity and panel voltage. Compare the array’s open-circuit voltage and maximum power with the station’s input limits. Cloud cover and low sun can reduce charging below the station’s minimum threshold; retain a grid-charging plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance before storm season

  1. Charge the station to the level recommended by its manual and inspect the display for warnings.
  2. Update firmware only through the manufacturer’s documented process, then retest UPS and charging behavior.
  3. Run the refrigerator, networking equipment and any critical medical device under supervision and log runtime.
  4. Check expansion-battery connections, solar cables, adapters and transfer equipment.
  5. Store the unit in the specified temperature and humidity range, away from water and combustible clutter.
  6. Keep printed instructions, appliance startup information and an electrician’s contact details with the station.

Bottom line

A 1,000Wh-class station with at least 1,500W continuous output is the sensible starting point for a refrigerator, freezer, router, lights and charging. Move to 1,800–4,000Wh or an expandable system when pumps, multiple simultaneous loads or multi-day outages are involved. Capacity controls duration; continuous and surge ratings control whether appliances can run and start. Measure your own loads, verify UPS and recharge compatibility, and use code-compliant electrical connections before relying on the system in an emergency.
