For ordinary thermal paste, use gentle cleaning with isopropyl alcohol instead; polishing paste is not a routine repasting step. If your goal is to flatten a plate, that is lapping—a material-removal process, not cosmetic polishing.

| Ordinary thermal paste or pad residue | Follow the thermal-interface-material maker’s cleaning directions. Intel recommends a delicate anti-static wiper and isopropyl alcohol. Intel’s TIM removal guidance was last reviewed January 30, 2025. | Cleaning is not polishing; avoid abrasive removal unless you have a separate, well-founded reason. |
| Gallium-based liquid-metal residue on copper PC hardware | Thermal Grizzly TG Metal Polish & Restore (TG-MPR-01), which its manufacturer says is optimized for gallium residue and suitable for copper PC-hardware surfaces. Thermal Grizzly product information was accessed October 3, 2026. | This is a manufacturer-stated use, not an independent comparative test or a requirement for routine repasting. |
| Oxidation, tarnish, or cosmetic polishing | A copper-compatible general metal polish may address appearance, but copper compatibility alone does not establish that it is suitable for a CPU cold plate. Remove any remaining film or residue as the product directs before reassembly. | A shinier surface does not establish better flatness or cooling. |
| Changing surface flatness | Lapping is a separate abrasive process that removes material. Treat it as a precision modification, not a cleaning step. | It can change the plate’s geometry; results cannot be inferred from appearance. |
For liquid-metal residue: TG Metal Polish & Restore
Thermal Grizzly describes TG Metal Polish & Restore as a polishing paste optimized for gallium residue and suitable for copper, brass, chrome, and nickel surfaces in PC hardware. Its listed uses include CPU dies and heatspreaders. The manufacturer says the paste combines controlled abrasiveness with surfactant technology intended to bind gallium and help prevent it re-adhering during cleaning. The set includes a polishing pen and lint-free cloths. These are product-description claims, not independent findings that it outperforms alternatives or improves CPU temperatures.
After polishing, Thermal Grizzly says to clean the surface again until no polish residue remains before applying liquid metal, for example with its cleaning wipes or isopropyl alcohol. Follow the product instructions for the surface and residue you have; do not assume a cooler maker endorses the compound or that it is needed for ordinary thermal-paste removal.
For ordinary thermal paste: clean gently, do not polish
Intel’s instructions are to moisten a delicate anti-static task wiper with isopropyl alcohol, wipe away the old TIM gently, and let the alcohol dry. When reinstalling the processor or heatsink, apply fresh TIM rather than placing new material on top of old residue. Intel notes that proper TIM application is important to the thermal solution. Its guidance does not call for metal polish, sanding, or lapping.

Arctic Silver describes ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover & Surface Purifier as a two-step product for removing thermal grease or pads and preparing copper or aluminum surfaces. It is a cleaner and surface purifier, not evidence of a polishing or flattening compound.
General metal polish and lapping compounds are not interchangeable
When copper compatibility is the only evidence
Kemet says its Sabre aluminium oxide abrasive paste is suitable for lapping and polishing and is particularly effective for smoothing soft metals, including copper. It also describes Simichrome as a general polish for uncoated copper and other metals that leaves a protective film. Kemet’s information is copper-focused, not a tested recommendation for CPU cold plates. Abrasive or protective residue must be removed appropriately before reassembly; follow the compound’s own directions.

- OIL-BASED DIAMOND COMPOUND KIT: Includes six 5-gram (0.18 oz) syringes of high-concentration diamond paste for rapid, ultra-smooth, and precise polishing. 450 grit (29-32 microns) for lapping, stock removal and coarse knife sharpening; 1,500 grit (6-12 microns) for pre-polishing, fine lapping, and scratch removal; 6,000 grit (2.6-3 microns) for fine polishing and very light scratch removal; 15,000 grit (0.6-0.8 microns) for very fine final polishing; 30,000 grit (0.1-0.5 microns) for mirror shine and finest polishing; 80,000 grit (0.1 microns) for ultra-fine polishing and mirror shine. Step-by-step finishing from rough to flawless shine. No dilution required.
- INDUSTRIAL-GRADE POLISHING PERFORMANCE: Formulated with 99.3% pure diamond powder-over 90% of which are spherical-for ultra-uniform, scratch-free mirror results. These micron-sized particles are exceptionally hard, heat-resistant, and stay consistent under high-friction conditions while remaining gentle on gemstones.
- ADVANCED FORMULA: A neutral pH, dye-free, odorless formula that won't stain, corrode, or damage sensitive materials such as glass, sapphires, resin, camera lenses, or precious metals. This high-strength compound offers highly efficient polishing that saves both time and effort. The color-free formula also ensures faster cutting with no risk of staining or contamination, even on high-permeability materials.
- INNOVATIVE CAP DESIGN: Unique rubber-capped syringe keeps the paste moist and prevents waste. Easy to control for both hand and machine polishing—just apply and gently buff with wool buffs, leather strops, cotton swabs, or cloths to achieve a professional, mirror-like shine.
- MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS: Functions as a glass polishing compound, diamond polishing compound, valve lapping compound, honing compound, stropping compound, grinding compound, and metal or stone finishing paste—all in one versatile kit. Suitable for removing scratches on glass, watch crystals, phone screens, and mirrors, and for polishing metals such as knives, rings, guns, and jewelry. Also effective for restoring marble, granite, and epoxy resin surfaces, or for sharpening and surface finishing.
Kemet’s polishing-paste and lapping-compound information was accessed October 3, 2026. Neither copper compatibility nor a polished appearance establishes a safe process or a cooling benefit for a particular cooler.
When the goal is flatness
Lapping removes material and can alter flatness or geometry. PACE Technologies’ staged abrasive and final-polish instructions are written for metallographic copper specimens and laboratory surface analysis, not computer coolers. Do not transfer its pressures, chemistry, or procedure wholesale to a CPU cold plate. PACE Technologies’ copper and copper-alloy preparation guide is metallographic process guidance.

What a shine can—and cannot—tell you
A mirror-like finish is a visual result, not proof that the cold plate is flat, that contact has improved, or that temperatures will fall. No current head-to-head test in the cited product information establishes a best-performing compound on CPU cold plates or a guaranteed temperature reduction.
FrostyTech’s 1999 Celeron lapping article is historical context, not transferable evidence for a modern CPU or cold plate. In its own test, it reported a 0.0024-inch high-to-low difference on the plate before grinding, that most of the plate was within 0.0005 inches after its procedure, and an average temperature improvement of about 18% across its particular test conditions. Those figures describe one old experiment and do not predict results from polishing a current cooler. FrostyTech’s 1999 lapping article documents that historical test.

Practical decision checklist
- Old thermal paste or pad residue: use gentle TIM cleaning, then let the surface dry; do not add polish by default.
- Gallium residue on copper PC hardware: TG Metal Polish & Restore is the most directly matched product in the manufacturer documentation cited here; clean away all polish residue before reapplying liquid metal.
- Tarnish or cosmetic appearance: confirm that the chosen product’s instructions fit the surface and remove any remaining film or residue before reassembly.
- Concern about flatness: recognize that lapping removes material and can change geometry; copper-polishing guidance for another use does not establish a safe CPU-cooler procedure.
