There is no single Pokémon emulator for Windows. The games were released for several different Nintendo systems, so the right choice depends on the console behind the game. Pokémon Emerald needs a Game Boy Advance emulator, Pokémon Platinum needs a Nintendo DS emulator, and Pokémon Colosseum needs a GameCube emulator.

This list covers the strongest Windows options for each Pokémon platform, while separating genuine recommendations from tools that are often—but incorrectly—advertised as Pokémon emulators.

Quick picks

1. mGBA — best Pokémon emulator for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance

mGBA is the easiest recommendation for the largest group of classic Pokémon games. It runs Game Boy and Game Boy Color releases such as Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal, as well as Game Boy Advance games including Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

The current stable release is mGBA 0.10.5. The official Windows downloads include installer and portable packages, with separate standard and 64-bit options:

  • Windows portable .7z archive
  • Windows installer .exe
  • Windows 64-bit portable .7z archive
  • Windows 64-bit installer .exe

Choose the 64-bit installer on a normal 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. Choose the portable archive if you do not want an installed copy or need to keep the emulator on removable storage.

mGBA supports Windows 7 and newer, so it is compatible with both Windows versions covered here. It is also actively designed around accuracy rather than being merely a lightweight GBA launcher. A common outdated description calls mGBA “GBA-only”; it also supports Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

Best for: playing classic Pokémon games with one clean, focused emulator.

2. VisualBoyAdvance-M — a dependable alternative for GB, GBC, and GBA

VisualBoyAdvance-M, usually shortened to VBA-M, is the continuing-development fork of the original VisualBoyAdvance project. It supports the same core Pokémon generations as mGBA: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.

Windows builds are available from the project’s GitHub Releases tab, and Windows nightly builds are published at nightly.visualboyadvance-m.org. The project states support for Windows XP and newer, which includes Windows 10 and Windows 11.

VBA-M remains useful if you already have an established configuration, prefer its interface, or need to troubleshoot a problematic setup. Its official troubleshooting advice is unusually concrete: use Help -> Factory Reset before reporting configuration-related problems. This can resolve broken paths, graphics settings, and other changes that survive normal restarts.

Older PCs may struggle with the higher-level xBRZ and ScaleFX graphics scalers. If a game becomes slow after enabling one, return to a simpler scaler rather than assuming the ROM is faulty. The documented DirectX June 2010 Redistributable requirement applies to Windows XP; it is not normally a Windows 10/11 requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: users who want a mature alternative to mGBA or already use VBA-M save files and settings.

3. melonDS — best modern choice for Nintendo DS Pokémon games

Use melonDS for Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. These games require Nintendo DS emulation. A 3DS emulator cannot replace a DS emulator, and a GBA emulator cannot run them.

melonDS is an open-source Nintendo DS emulator with support for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Its official site provides a Windows download through the Download page, which redirects to GitHub. The site also provides sections for DS ROMS, Get Started, Settings, and Troubleshoot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

melonDS is the better first choice when you want a current, focused DS emulator rather than a broad frontend. Because DS games use two screens and may rely on touch input, configure your display layout and mouse or controller input before judging performance.

The official download page does not expose a current version number or a verified, universal Windows menu path for loading a game. Avoid guides that present old menu labels as if they necessarily match your build.

Best for: the mainline Nintendo DS Pokémon generation.

4. DeSmuME — established Nintendo DS emulator

DeSmuME is another option for the Nintendo DS Pokémon catalog. The current official stable release is DeSmuME 0.9.13, with the stable Windows package hosted on GitHub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is one important installation detail: the official download page says Windows users need the 2015, 2017, and 2019 Microsoft redistributable. It directs users to the BizHawk prerequisite installer for that dependency. If DeSmuME closes immediately or fails to launch, install the required runtime before changing emulator settings.

Windows nightly builds are also available at:

https://nightly.link/TASEmulators/desmume/workflows/build_win/master/desmume-win-x64.zip

For most players, start with the stable release. Nightlies can contain newer fixes, but they are less appropriate when you simply want a predictable setup.

Do not confuse the current release with DeSmuME X432R. The official project describes X432R as very outdated. It should not be presented as the latest or preferred DeSmuME build.

Best for: users who want a long-established DS emulator and do not mind installing its Windows runtime prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. RetroArch — convenient multi-system setup, but not an emulator by itself

RetroArch is a frontend that loads emulator cores. Installing RetroArch alone does not mean a Pokémon game will launch. You must install and select a core that matches the console for the game.

Pokémon platform Suitable RetroArch core
Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance mGBA core
Nintendo DS melonDS or DeSmuME core
GameCube and Wii Dolphin core
Nintendo 64 A compatible Nintendo 64 core

RetroArch makes sense if you want common controller profiles, shaders, save-state management, and a unified library across several Nintendo systems. It is less convenient if you only want to play Pokémon Emerald; mGBA will involve fewer layers and fewer choices.

6. Dolphin — for GameCube and Wii Pokémon games

Dolphin is the correct Windows emulator for GameCube games such as Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. It also handles Wii software, including Pokémon Battle Revolution. It is not limited to GameCube.

The current release page lists 2603 as the March 2026 release and 2603a as its hotfix. Windows packages are available for both Windows x64 and Windows ARM64. Stable releases are the sensible choice when you value reliability over the newest development changes.

Dolphin requires the 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022. A missing runtime can stop the emulator from launching. Install that dependency before diagnosing a black screen or a crash at startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compared with handheld emulators, Dolphin benefits more from a capable CPU and graphics driver. Use a recent driver and begin with the default graphics backend before enabling enhancements such as higher internal resolution or texture modifications.

Best for: the GameCube and Wii Pokémon spin-offs.

Official download: dolphin-emu.org/download

7. Project64 — for Pokémon Stadium and Stadium 2

Project64 targets Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 64DD software. It is the relevant choice for Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2, rather than a general-purpose Nintendo emulator.

The project lists support for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its stated minimum hardware requirements include a 1 GHz Intel or AMD processor, SSE2 support, 2 GB of RAM, and DirectX 8-capable graphics for the Jabo’s Direct3D8 plugin. More modern plugins have their own requirements, including OpenGL 3.3 or Vulkan 1.1 depending on the renderer.

There is an architecture caveat: although the project lists 64-bit Windows 10/11 as the operating-system target, it also states that its 64-bit builds are experimental and not currently supported. Treat that as a reason to check the current release notes rather than assuming every 64-bit package is equally reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intel integrated graphics can produce problems even when the listed requirements are met, and outdated graphics drivers are another common cause of rendering issues. The project hosts stable installers and nightly builds through pj64-emu.com.

Best for: N64 Pokémon games on a Windows PC with current graphics drivers.

8. Cemu — for the Wii U version of Pokkén Tournament

Cemu emulates Wii U, not Wii. Its Pokémon relevance is primarily Pokkén Tournament on Wii U. It will not run Game Boy, DS, 3DS, or ordinary Wii games.

The current release shown on the official site is Cemu 2.6. Its Windows requirements include Windows 7 x64 or newer, 4 GB of RAM minimum, 8 GB recommended, OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.2, and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 x64 Redistributable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Graphics API choice depends on the PC:

  • NVIDIA: recent drivers generally work as expected.
  • AMD: recent drivers generally work as expected; older AMD cards should avoid OpenGL because of poor performance.
  • Intel: support is more limited, so Vulkan is recommended where available.

Cemu recommends OpenGL for graphics cards with less than 2 GB of memory and Vulkan in other cases. It emulates the Wii U GamePad, Pro Controller, and Classic Controller. GamePad touch input can be controlled with the left mouse button, while gyro input can use a compatible controller or right-mouse-button dragging.

Best for: Windows users specifically playing Wii U software such as Pokkén Tournament.

9. Citra — the 3DS category, but not a verified current recommendation

Citra is the emulator associated with 3DS Pokémon games such as Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. A Nintendo DS emulator such as melonDS or DeSmuME cannot run those titles.

However, Citra should not be presented as an ordinary actively maintained download without checking its current status first. The available current source material identifies Citra in a Windows emulator index but does not verify a current official Windows download, release number, support policy, or development status.

That makes Citra a platform reference rather than a straightforward recommendation in this list. Be especially cautious with websites offering “official” Citra installers, bundled ROMs, or modified builds. Verify the project’s current status and download source independently before running anything.

Best for: identifying the emulator category required by 3DS Pokémon games—not for blindly downloading an unverified package.

10. PPSSPP — excellent PSP emulator, but not a Pokémon emulator

PPSSPP is included because it is frequently listed in broad Pokémon emulator articles, but it does not run official Pokémon games. It emulates Sony PSP software, and no mainline Pokémon games were released for PSP. It also does not run PS1 games or UMD Video.

If you use PPSSPP for PSP software, Windows offers both a traditional installer and a portable ZIP installation. On standard 64-bit Windows, the executable is PPSSPPWindows64.exe; Windows on ARM users should choose the native ARM64 build.

Best for: PSP games—not Pokémon.

How to choose the right emulator

  1. Identify the console. Check the game’s original platform, not just its release year. FireRed is a GBA game; HeartGold is a DS game; Omega Ruby is a 3DS game.
  2. Start with a dedicated emulator. mGBA, melonDS, DeSmuME, Dolphin, Project64, and Cemu are easier to reason about than a frontend with multiple cores.
  3. Use RetroArch only when its unified interface is useful. It adds flexibility, but every system requires the right core.
  4. Install Windows dependencies when the project lists them. DeSmuME may need the Microsoft runtime mentioned on its download page; Dolphin requires the 64-bit Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable; Cemu lists the Visual C++ 2017 x64 Redistributable.
  5. Download from the project or its linked repository. Avoid “ROM packs,” cracked installers, and download pages that bundle unknown extras.

Which emulator should you use for each Pokémon game?

Game or series Recommended emulator
Red, Blue, Yellow mGBA or VBA-M
Gold, Silver, Crystal mGBA or VBA-M
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald mGBA or VBA-M
FireRed, LeafGreen mGBA or VBA-M

FAQ

What is the best Pokémon emulator for Windows 10 and Windows 11?

For Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance Pokémon games, mGBA is the strongest general recommendation. Use melonDS or DeSmuME for Nintendo DS games, Dolphin for GameCube and Wii titles, Project64 for Nintendo 64 games, and Cemu for Wii U software.

Can one emulator play every Pokémon game?

No. Pokémon games span Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U. Each emulator supports particular console hardware.

Is mGBA only a Game Boy Advance emulator?

No. Current mGBA documentation identifies support for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. It can therefore run Pokémon games from all three of those handheld platforms.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is RetroArch a Pokémon emulator?

More precisely, RetroArch is a frontend. It loads emulator cores, such as the mGBA core for GBA games or a melonDS or DeSmuME core for DS games. Installing RetroArch without the correct core will not make a game launch.

Why will DeSmuME not start on Windows?

The official DeSmuME download page states that the Windows build requires the 2015, 2017, and 2019 Microsoft redistributable. Install the prerequisite recommended by the project, then try launching DeSmuME again.

Can PPSSPP play Pokémon games?

No. PPSSPP emulates Sony PSP software, and there are no mainline official Pokémon games released for PSP. It should not be advertised as a Pokémon emulator.

Can a DS emulator run Pokémon X or Pokémon Sun?

No. Those are Nintendo 3DS games. DS emulators such as melonDS and DeSmuME cannot replace a 3DS emulator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I download Pokémon ROMs?

Use game files that you legally own or have dumped yourself. This article identifies emulator software and does not provide commercial Pokémon ROMs.

The Bottom Line

For most classic Pokémon players, install mGBA. It covers the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance generations without the overhead of a multi-system frontend. Choose melonDS for newer DS games, Dolphin for Colosseum and XD, Project64 for Pokémon Stadium, and Cemu for Wii U’s Pokkén Tournament.

Do not treat PPSSPP as a Pokémon solution, and do not download an allegedly current Citra build without first verifying its source and status.
