2. YNAB: best for zero-based budgeting

In the current web app, the main planning workflow is found under the Plan tab. The interface includes Ready to Assign, Auto-Assign, month navigation, Edit Plan, and Cost to Be Me. Edit Plan helps compare category targets with expected income before you commit to a plan.

Why choose YNAB

  • Excellent for deliberate, category-by-category planning.
  • Auto-Assign can speed up assigning available money.
  • Supports household sharing with up to six people, including the owner.
  • Includes a 34-day trial when you sign up directly through YNAB.
  • Includes newer features such as transaction photo attachments.

YNAB costs $14.99 per month or $109 per year after the trial. It is not a permanently free budgeting app.

The most important limitation for international users is currency handling. You can select the currency for a spending plan, but YNAB does not support multiple currencies together in one plan. Its direct bank import also covers only selected banks in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and European Union.

3. Quicken Simplifi: best value for automated tracking

Quicken Simplifi is a strong choice when you want the app to import transactions, identify spending patterns, project cash flow, and show savings goals without requiring the daily category decisions that YNAB encourages.

Its feature set covers banking, spending, savings, investments, reports, spending insights, cash-flow projections, and forecasts. The current pricing page displays $2.99 per month billed annually, with $5.99 shown as the crossed-out comparison price.

Important Simplifi connection behavior

Simplifi imports information from your financial institution, but the connection is one-way. It cannot edit transactions or balances at the bank. Accounts normally refresh during nightly updates, so the number shown in Simplifi may not be identical to the number currently shown by your bank.

Common problems include:

  • Many banks provide only about 90 days of transaction history when an account is first connected.
  • Pending transactions may take days to appear, and Capital One and USAA do not provide pending transactions to Simplifi.
  • Refresh delays and different balance definitions can create apparent discrepancies.
  • Reconnecting an account can create a duplicate if you leave Add as New (No Link) selected.

How to reconnect a Simplifi account without losing its history

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Open the account’s three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Reset connection, then select Reset.

Resetting the connection does not delete the account’s existing transaction history. When linking again, use the Action drop-down and select the existing account instead of Add as New (No Link).

4. Copilot Money: best Apple-focused app

Copilot Money offers one of the cleanest experiences for people who use Apple devices. It is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web, and combines spending, budgets, investments, subscriptions, savings goals, cash flow, net worth, and custom alerts.

The current price is $13 per month or $95 per year, with a one-month trial for new users. There is no permanent free plan.

Copilot’s biggest restriction is geographic: it supports U.S.-based financial institutions and accounts only. That makes it a poor choice for users whose primary accounts are outside the United States, regardless of how polished the interface is.

Copilot has also documented beta features including Money Assistant and an MCP integration for supported AI tools. Treat these as experimental features rather than guaranteed parts of the standard experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Rocket Money: best for subscriptions and bill reduction

Rocket Money is more specialized than Monarch, YNAB, or Simplifi. Its strongest use is finding recurring charges, monitoring subscriptions, reminding you about bills, and helping negotiate eligible bills.

The free tier includes subscription tracking, budgeting, and bill reminders. Premium adds subscription-cancellation assistance, unlimited custom budgets, financial goals, net-worth tracking, full credit reports, enhanced transaction tools, and web access.

Read the bill-negotiation terms carefully. When Rocket Money successfully negotiates a bill, it charges 35%–60% of the first year’s savings. This fee can apply even when the service prevents a scheduled price increase rather than reducing the current bill. Subscription cancellation assistance is a Premium feature; the free plan only tracks subscriptions.

6. Goodbudget: best manual envelope-budgeting app

Goodbudget is a good option if you like the envelope method but do not want to give an app automatic access to your bank accounts. You allocate money to digital envelopes and enter transactions manually or use workflows supported by your plan.

The Free Forever plan is useful for basic manual budgeting. The Premium plan adds bank synchronization and costs $10 per month or $80 per year. Automatic bank sync is not included in the free plan, so choose Goodbudget specifically if manual entry is acceptable or desirable.

However, it should not be described as a complete replacement for the former Mint budgeting workflow. Mint is no longer a standalone product; Intuit moved the experience toward Credit Karma. Credit Karma is strongest for credit monitoring and basic financial visibility, not detailed envelope or zero-based budgeting.

How to choose the right personal finance app

  1. Decide whether you want planning or tracking. Choose YNAB or Goodbudget for hands-on budgeting. Choose Monarch, Simplifi, or Copilot for automated monitoring.
  2. Check your financial institutions before paying. A subscription is not useful if your bank, brokerage, loan provider, or credit union will not connect reliably.
  3. Check currency and location support. Copilot supports U.S. accounts only, and YNAB cannot combine multiple currencies in one spending plan.
  4. Choose household support deliberately. Monarch includes separate logins and unlimited collaborators; YNAB supports up to six people.
  5. Compare the complete cost. Include annual subscriptions, Premium-only features, trial renewal dates, and Rocket Money’s success fee for bill negotiation.
  6. Use the app as a planning layer, not as a bank. These services generally cannot transfer money or guarantee that displayed balances include every pending transaction.

Privacy and bank-linking considerations

Most personal finance apps use account aggregation. You authorize the app, and sometimes a separate aggregation provider, to retrieve financial information. That creates privacy and security questions about what data is collected, how long it is retained, and which companies can access it.

Deleting an app from your phone does not necessarily revoke its access to financial data. When you stop using a service:

  1. Remove or disconnect the accounts inside the finance app.
  2. Revoke authorization through your bank or financial institution when that option is available.
  3. Ask the service to delete retained financial data.
  4. Review connected-app access periodically rather than assuming an unused app is inactive.

Do not assume every connection is a direct API connection. Providers may use bank-hosted OAuth connections or other aggregation methods, and some services may store encrypted credentials to refresh accounts automatically. Review the app’s security and data-retention documentation before linking sensitive accounts.

FAQ

Which personal finance app is best overall?

Monarch Money is the best overall choice for most households because it combines account aggregation, flexible or category budgeting, investment and net-worth tracking, recurring bills, reports, goals, and household collaboration. Its standard pricing page lists $99.99 per year.

Is YNAB better than Monarch Money?

Choose YNAB if you want a strict zero-based or envelope-style budget and are willing to assign available money to categories actively. Choose Monarch if you prefer broader automated tracking, investments, net worth, reports, and household management.

What is the best free alternative to Mint?

Credit Karma is the closest current free option for credit monitoring, connected-account reviews, spending visibility, and net-worth tracking. It is not a full replacement for Mint’s former detailed budgeting workflow.

Are personal finance apps safe to connect to a bank account?

They can be useful, but linking accounts creates privacy and security implications. Check the service’s connection method, data-retention policy, and security documentation. When you stop using an app, revoke authorization through your bank where possible and request deletion of retained data; deleting the phone app alone may not revoke access.

The Bottom Line

Choose Monarch Money for the best all-around household dashboard, YNAB for disciplined zero-based budgeting, and Quicken Simplifi for inexpensive automated tracking and forecasts. Choose Copilot if you are entirely within the Apple ecosystem and use U.S. accounts. Use Rocket Money mainly for subscriptions and bill negotiation, Goodbudget for manual envelopes, and Credit Karma when free credit-focused monitoring matters more than detailed budgeting.
