Use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller through Steam Input, choose one button-label convention, and calibrate the stick deadzone only until drift stops. The 2019 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is a Nintendo Switch game, not a native PC release, so these settings apply when configuring a controller for PC games or compatible software with a similar top-down, menu-heavy design.

What this setup is designed to solve

Link’s Awakening combines eight-direction movement, frequent menu navigation, item selection, map access and short action sequences. A good PC profile therefore needs more than a generic gamepad preset: movement must remain precise, face-button prompts must be understandable, and pause or map access must be reachable without accidentally clicking a stick.

Nintendo does support button remapping on the Switch Pro Controller, and Steam Input provides a second, per-game remapping layer for PC software. That makes a Pro Controller the most direct starting point, but it also creates a risk: if Steam and the game both alter the same buttons, a setting can be applied twice or cancelled out. Keep one layer authoritative for each function.

Recommended baseline layout

Controller choice

Start with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or another pad with the Nintendo physical arrangement: A and B on the right and lower positions, with X and Y above and left. The familiar shell helps players who learned their muscle memory on Nintendo hardware, while Steam Input can translate the controller for games that expect a different protocol.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Nintendo documents remapping support for the Switch Pro Controller, although remapping is not a guarantee that every game will display Nintendo glyphs. The game may still identify the pad as an Xbox-style or generic controller and show different letters.

Movement and the D-pad

Assign the left stick to character movement. For a game that accepts analog input, leave the stick as an analog source so slow, deliberate movement remains possible. For a title that treats movement as eight digital directions, the stick still works, but a D-pad can feel more deliberate for grid-like navigation.

Keep the D-pad available for menus, item selection or games that interpret movement digitally. Do not sacrifice it for a rarely used shortcut unless the game has no useful menu navigation there.

Face buttons

Use the lower face button for the action you press most often, such as confirm, use or a primary attack, and the right face button for the secondary action. This arrangement keeps the most frequent input under the thumb’s natural downward motion while leaving a distinct neighboring button for cancellation or another tool. Verify the result against the game’s on-screen prompts before committing to it; some PC games assume the opposite order.

If the software offers a Nintendo button-layout convention, enable it when your priority is to preserve the meaning of the printed labels. If it only offers Xbox prompts, decide whether you will follow those prompts or keep a Nintendo-label-first convention. Either choice is workable; switching conventions from game to game without checking the screen is what causes most A/B and X/Y mistakes.

Shoulder buttons and triggers

Use the left and right bumpers for frequent secondary actions such as a shield, dash, quick item or ability. Reserve the analog triggers for actions that genuinely benefit from a variable pull, such as acceleration or a continuously measured input. If the game reads a trigger only as on or off, a bumper is usually easier to reach and less likely to be confused with an analog setting.

Pause and map

Assign pause or map to a central, easy-to-find button. Keep map access separate from stick clicks when possible. Many games already use stick clicks for movement-related functions, and placing the map there can lead to an accidental menu opening during play.

Set up a Switch Pro Controller in Steam Input

Connect by USB for the first setup. Wired connection removes Bluetooth pairing variables while you confirm that Steam sees the controller and applies the intended layout.

  1. Connect the controller. Plug the Pro Controller into the PC with a USB cable and wait for Steam to show it as an available game controller.
  2. Enable Switch support. In Steam’s controller settings, enable Steam Input for Switch Pro controllers. Steam’s current controller workflow also recognizes Switch and Switch 2 controllers, but the exact options shown can vary with the device and client build.
  3. Open the per-game layout. From the game’s library page, choose Manage → Controller layout. This profile is tied to that game, so a Nintendo-style mapping does not unexpectedly alter unrelated titles.
  4. Bind the essential controls first. Set left-stick movement, the four face buttons, both bumpers, pause and map. Leave unusual shortcuts unassigned until the basic profile behaves correctly.
  5. Choose the prompt convention. Check whether the game displays Nintendo or Xbox letters. Make the Steam mapping and the visible prompts agree as far as the game allows, and write down any deliberate exception.
  6. Save a named profile. Use a name such as Nintendo-style top-down so you can identify the working version before experimenting with alternate bindings.
  7. Test before playing a long session. Check a safe area, an ordinary menu, a diagonal movement segment and a combat or platforming sequence. Confirm that pause and map open once, that no direction is held after releasing the stick, and that every displayed prompt produces the expected action.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes both native and legacy input modes. A game that already has reliable native controller support may need little or no translation; a title with incomplete support can benefit from a Steam Input profile. If a game suddenly reports duplicate inputs, test the native mode and the Steam profile separately rather than stacking both without a reason.

Choose a button-label strategy

There are two sensible approaches. The right choice depends on whether physical-label consistency or the game’s prompts matter more to you.

Strategy What you do Advantages Trade-offs
Nintendo-label-first Keep A, B, X and Y functioning according to their printed Nintendo positions and enable a Nintendo-layout option when available. Switch muscle memory transfers directly; the physical letters and expected Nintendo actions stay aligned. A PC game that shows Xbox prompts may display a letter that does not match the button you press.
Prompt-first Map the physical buttons so the action shown on screen is produced, even when that means the printed letters have different meanings. On-screen instructions remain literal, which is useful in games with tutorials, quick-time prompts or frequent button reminders. A and B or X and Y may feel swapped compared with a Nintendo console, and the same controller can feel different in another game.

How to decide

  • Choose Nintendo-label-first when you rely on long-established Switch muscle memory and the game rarely displays button letters.
  • Choose prompt-first when tutorials, menus or multiplayer instructions constantly refer to the displayed glyphs.
  • Prefer per-game profiles so a prompt-first PC game does not force a remap on a title that already follows Nintendo conventions.
  • Write down the exception when a game’s confirm and cancel actions are reversed. A short note prevents repeated trial and error after an update or reinstall.

Deadzone and sensitivity: a reliable calibration method

Steam defines a deadzone as the radius around the centre of an analog input that is ignored while the input is translated. Steam exposes a range from 0.0 to 1.0, but its documentation does not prescribe one universal value because stick wear, controller hardware and game processing differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calibrate from the game’s default

  1. Return the game’s own deadzone and sensitivity controls to their defaults.
  2. Start with Steam’s default deadzone rather than guessing a large number.
  3. Release the left stick in a safe area or menu and watch for character, cursor or menu movement.
  4. If the input is stable, lower the deadzone in small increments only when you need more fine control.
  5. If the character or cursor moves while the stick is released, raise the value one small step at a time until the movement stops.
  6. Test slow walking, a diagonal and a full-speed direction after every change. A setting that stops drift can still feel sluggish if it creates too much unused centre travel.

There is no correct deadzone number that applies to every Pro Controller or every game. Use the smallest setting that reliably suppresses your controller’s drift at that moment. A worn stick may require a larger value over time, while a new controller may remain comfortable near the default.

Avoid double processing

Do not enable contradictory deadzone or inversion settings in both Steam Input and the game. For example, a large Steam deadzone combined with another large in-game deadzone can make slow movement unresponsive. Set the option in one place, test it, then add the second layer only when the title requires it.

The same rule applies to inversion. If the camera or menu cursor moves the wrong way, correct the setting in one layer and disable the competing inversion elsewhere. Make one change at a time so you can identify which setting fixed the behavior.

Tune the profile for different Nintendo-style games

Top-down exploration and action

Keep movement on the left stick and place the primary use or confirm action on the lower face button if that is the convention you selected. Put shield, dash or a quick item on the bumpers so the thumb can remain on movement while the index fingers handle defensive or traversal actions. Keep map and pause central rather than hiding them behind a long chord.

Menu-heavy adventures

Preserve the D-pad for vertical and horizontal menu navigation. Make confirm and cancel unambiguous, and test both in inventory screens, map screens and dialogue boxes. A layout that feels fast during exploration can be confusing if the same two buttons are reversed in menus.

Platforming or precision movement

Test the smallest comfortable deadzone with repeated short taps and diagonals. If the game supports both analog and digital movement, compare the left stick with the D-pad in a safe section. Keep jump or the primary action on the button that can be pressed without shifting the thumb away from the direction you hold most often.

Games with camera control

Leave the right stick for camera or cursor control when the game uses it. Avoid assigning map or a high-frequency command to the same stick click unless the title has no alternative. Check that a deadzone change intended for movement has not made camera control feel delayed.

Troubleshooting common problems

The controller is not detected

  • Reconnect by USB and confirm the cable carries data, not only power.
  • Verify that Steam Input for Switch Pro controllers is enabled.
  • Close other remapping utilities temporarily; two translators can present conflicting virtual controllers.
  • Restart Steam after changing controller support, then reopen the game’s Controller layout page.
  • If the controller works in Steam but not in the game, compare the game’s native controller mode with the Steam Input profile instead of enabling both indiscriminately.

A and B, or X and Y, appear swapped

This is usually a convention mismatch, not a defective controller. Look at the game’s prompts, decide whether you are using Nintendo-label-first or prompt-first mapping, and change the Steam profile or the game’s own layout so only one layer defines the letters. Retest a menu as well as gameplay; some titles use different confirm and cancel assumptions in menus.

The character moves when the stick is released

Increase the affected axis deadzone in small steps until the movement stops, then test slow movement and diagonals. If the required value makes the stick noticeably unresponsive, the hardware may be developing drift; avoid compensating with an excessively large deadzone when a replacement or repair is practical.

Movement feels delayed or too narrow

Reduce an overly large deadzone gradually and check for a second deadzone in the game. Also check whether Steam is applying a response curve or sensitivity setting while the game applies another. Keep the layer that gives the clearest result and disable redundant processing.

Buttons trigger two actions

Look for a native game binding and a Steam binding assigned to the same physical input. Remove one assignment, restart the game and test in a safe area. Legacy input translation can be useful for unsupported titles, but it should not be layered on top of a working native mapping without a specific need.

The map opens accidentally

Move map to a central button or another deliberate input and leave stick clicks for the game’s movement-related commands. Test the controller while moving in several directions, since accidental clicks are easier to produce when the thumb is pressing hard against the stick edge.

Hardware options

Option Best use What to verify
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Best direct match for Nintendo-style games and the recommended starting point for Steam Input. Confirm the controller is detected, enable Switch Pro support, and check whether the individual game shows Nintendo or Xbox prompts.
8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode controller Alternative for players who want a Nintendo-oriented layout and multiple connection modes. Confirm the exact Ultimate model, current PC compatibility and the retailer’s listing before buying; the name covers more than one configuration.
Other XInput or DirectInput pad Useful when a PC game has strong native support or when you already own a comfortable controller. Determine whether the game sees it as XInput, DirectInput or a Steam virtual controller, then choose one authoritative remapping layer.

Connection mode affects how a game identifies the pad. A controller that works over USB may present differently over Bluetooth, so test the mode you intend to use for regular play and save the profile after that test.

Final validation checklist

Before starting a long save, run through this short checklist:

  • Steam detects the intended controller and the correct per-game profile is active.
  • Movement is assigned to the left stick, with the D-pad available for menus when useful.
  • The four face buttons follow one clearly chosen convention.
  • Bumpers handle frequent secondary actions; triggers are reserved for genuinely analog inputs.
  • Pause and map are central and cannot be triggered accidentally by a stick click.
  • The deadzone is the smallest value that prevents visible drift without making slow movement feel dead.
  • Only Steam or the game, not both redundantly, controls inversion and deadzone behavior.
  • A safe-area, menu, diagonal and action-sequence test all produce the expected result.

Save the verified layout as the game’s default profile. If you later change hardware, connection mode or the game’s native controller option, make a copy first so the known-good mapping remains available.
