Change the password exposed in the breach, then change every other account where you reused it. A password manager makes that practical by generating a different random password for each service, storing the credentials, and identifying weak, reused, or compromised entries. Protect the manager with a long master passphrase and multifactor authentication (MFA), then add passkeys or a FIDO2 security key to your most valuable accounts where supported.
For a fast, documented free starting point, Proton Pass lists unlimited logins and devices, password generation, weak- and reused-password alerts, passkeys, and password import on its free plan. Bitwarden is a strong alternative if open-source positioning and explicit vault-health reports matter more to you. 1Password and Dashlane are established paid alternatives, but their current prices, plan limits, and comparative performance should be checked on their live product pages before purchase.
What to do immediately after a password breach
A leaked password is no longer safe, even if the breached service has not forced a reset. NIST says a verifier should force a change when there is evidence that an authenticator has been compromised. CISA advises updating a potentially affected password immediately and changing it anywhere else you reused it.
- Secure your password-reset email first. If an attacker can enter your email account, they may reset other accounts while you are repairing them. Change that password to a new, randomly generated value and confirm MFA is enabled.
- Repair high-impact accounts next. Work through financial services, identity and government services, administrator accounts, cloud consoles, work systems, and any account that can reset another account.
- Replace every reused credential. Search the manager for the exposed password and for similar entries. Each service needs its own random password; changing only one copy leaves the others vulnerable.
- Enable stronger sign-in. Turn on MFA or a passkey after changing each important password. A FIDO2 security key can provide phishing-resistant MFA for compatible services.
- Watch for targeted phishing. Use the service’s known website or app rather than a link in an unsolicited password-reset message. CISA specifically warns that attackers use login and reset themes to steal new credentials.
Do not create a “new” password by adding a number, punctuation mark, or year to the old one. NIST warns that attackers routinely test those predictable transformations.

What makes a password manager suitable for breach recovery?
Post-breach recovery is different from simply storing a few logins. You may need to rotate dozens of credentials quickly, discover copies you forgot about, and avoid creating another predictable pattern. Evaluate a manager against the following capabilities.
Random, account-specific generation
The generator should create a separate password for every account and let you meet a site’s length and character requirements without reusing a template. NIST consumer guidance recommends a password manager for accounts that require passwords. If you must create a password manually, NIST recommends at least 15 characters; a manager can generate substantially longer values without asking you to memorize them.
Health and breach reporting
A useful vault report flags weak, reused, and known-compromised credentials and gives you a queue to fix. Alerts are only a to-do list: the risk is removed when you actually sign in to the service and save a replacement password.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →MFA, passkeys, and secure recovery
The manager itself should support MFA. Passkeys can remove the password from compatible services, while a FIDO2 key can add phishing-resistant MFA to high-value accounts. Check each service’s supported methods before buying a key. Your vault’s recovery design matters just as much as its login features: NIST recommends a long master passphrase, MFA, and avoiding products that let support or another recovery path expose the master password.
Import, autofill, and device coverage
Import tools reduce the temptation to postpone a reset. Autofill should work in the browsers and mobile apps you actually use, and the vault should synchronize across your required devices. Export capability is useful for moving away later, but exported files must be treated as sensitive plaintext.

Privacy and cost
Read what the provider says about encryption, account recovery, telemetry, and emergency access. A free plan can be safe when the vault is well protected and the product supplies the features you need; price alone does not determine security. Compare the recurring subscription cost with the number of people and devices covered, not just the introductory price.

Proton Pass is the most fully documented free option in the available product information for someone beginning a large migration. Its free plan lists unlimited logins and devices, so you can work across a phone, computer, and browser without a stated item or device cap. It also lists a password generator, weak- and reused-password alerts, passkeys, and an import tool.
When it fits
- You want to start rotating credentials without committing to a subscription.
- You need a vault-health view that points to weak or reused entries.
- You want passkey storage alongside conventional passwords.
- You are moving from a browser or another manager and value a documented import path.
When a paid plan may matter
Proton’s paid plans add built-in 2FA, secure sharing, dark-web monitoring, and emergency access. Those features can be useful for families, teams, or a household that needs a planned handoff if the primary user is unavailable. Confirm the current price and the exact limits before subscribing.
Bitwarden: a strong choice for explicit vault-health checks
Bitwarden says its premium vault-health reports identify weak, reused, and compromised passwords and provide actionable recommendations. That directly matches the work after a breach: find the accounts that still share a password, then process them one by one until the report is clean.

Why it appeals to security-focused users
Bitwarden emphasizes an open-source positioning. For readers who want that transparency and a dedicated health-report workflow, it is a credible alternative to a free-first approach. The available product information does not establish current plan boundaries, pricing, or every device and sharing limit, so verify those details before importing a large household or team vault.
Questions to answer during setup
- Which vault-health reports are available on the plan you selected?
- Can the apps and browser extensions cover all of your devices?
- What MFA methods are offered for the account protecting the vault?
- How does account recovery work without revealing the master passphrase?
1Password and Dashlane: paid alternatives to investigate
1Password and Dashlane both maintain official password-manager product pages and can be considered paid alternatives. The available product information does not independently verify their current prices, free tiers, plan limits, comparative performance, or the exact breach-recovery features in each edition.
If you are evaluating either service, test the workflow rather than relying on a feature checklist: import a small sample, generate a password that meets a difficult site’s rules, confirm autofill on your main devices, inspect reused-password reporting, and read the recovery documentation before moving the entire vault.
Step-by-step migration workflow
The order below minimizes the chance that an attacker can use one compromised account to reach the next.
- Create the manager account. Install the official app and browser extension from the provider’s known website or app store. Choose a long master passphrase that you have not used anywhere else. Turn on MFA for the manager immediately.
- Import existing credentials carefully. Use the manager’s import function when available. If you export a browser or old-manager CSV, save it only in a protected location during the import.
- Change the email password. Generate a random replacement, save it in the vault, sign out other sessions if the provider offers that control, and verify recovery methods.
- Rotate financial, identity, and administrator accounts. Open each service directly, use its password-change screen, generate a new random password, and save the result. Do not rely on a single bulk action unless the service explicitly supports it.
- Handle every reused copy. Use the manager’s search and health tools to locate entries sharing the exposed secret. Include old accounts, shopping sites, forums, and work logins; attackers often try the same credential across unrelated services.
- Enable MFA or a passkey. Prefer an authenticator app, passkey, or hardware key when the service supports it. Store recovery codes in the manager or another protected location, not in the same unencrypted text file as the passwords.
- Review alerts and sessions. Check the service for unfamiliar devices, active sessions, forwarding rules, API tokens, or newly added recovery addresses. Revoke anything you do not recognize.
- Delete temporary exports. Remove CSV files, screenshots, clipboard notes, and other plaintext copies. Empty the recycle bin or trash where applicable, and check cloud-sync folders for duplicates.
- Finish the health queue. Re-run reused, weak, and compromised-password reports after the final change. A clean report means the manager no longer sees those conditions; it does not guarantee that a service has never been breached.
How to handle MFA, passkeys, and security keys
MFA on the password manager
MFA protects the vault if someone obtains your master passphrase. Choose an authenticator app or another method you can maintain, and store recovery codes securely. An email-only recovery path is weaker if the email account has not been secured first.

Passkeys on important services
A passkey uses public-key authentication instead of a reusable password. When a bank, email provider, identity service, or administrator console offers one, enroll it after changing the old password and confirm that you can sign in from your normal devices.
FIDO2 security keys
A FIDO2 key can provide phishing-resistant MFA for compatible accounts. Before buying, check whether each target service supports FIDO2 or WebAuthn, how many keys it permits, and what backup method it requires. Register a spare key or another recovery method so losing one device does not lock you out.
Is a free password manager safe after a breach?
Yes, a free plan can be an appropriate recovery tool when it supplies unique-password generation, secure vault protection, MFA, and the reports or import tools you need. The important distinction is between a free tier with a sound security design and a product that omits the controls needed to protect the vault.
Assess the master-account design before importing everything. Use a long, unique passphrase; enable MFA; understand whether the provider can reset or recover the account without your passphrase; and learn how emergency access works. NIST specifically cautions against managers whose recovery process exposes the master password.

Common failure modes and fixes
You changed the breached site but not the reused accounts
Run the manager’s reused-password report and search for the old value manually. Prioritize email, financial, identity, and administrator accounts, then continue until every copy has a unique replacement.
Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
The new password is an obvious variation
Discard it and generate a completely random value. Adding “1,” “!” or the current year does not defeat an attacker who already knows the old password.
A reset email looks urgent or threatening
Do not use its link. Open the service through a bookmark or by typing its known address, then inspect account activity and change the password there. Unexpected reset notices can be phishing attempts designed to capture the replacement credential.
The import created plaintext files
Complete the import, confirm that entries autofill correctly, then delete the export and any copies in sync folders, downloads, backups, or trash. Keep only the encrypted vault and a separately protected recovery record.
You cannot decide between free and paid features
List the devices and people who need access, the number of accounts to migrate, whether you need secure sharing or emergency access, and which MFA or passkey methods matter. Choose the least expensive plan that covers those requirements, and recheck the provider’s current limits before paying.
Which manager should you choose?
- Choose Proton Pass if you want the clearest documented free path with unlimited logins and devices, generation, reused-password alerts, passkeys, and import.
- Choose Bitwarden if explicit vault-health reports and open-source positioning are central to your decision, after confirming the current premium boundaries.
- Investigate 1Password or Dashlane if you prefer a paid service and are willing to verify current pricing, reporting, passkey support, import behavior, and recovery terms directly.
- Add a FIDO2 key when the high-value services you use support it and you want phishing-resistant MFA beyond the password manager.
Regardless of the product, the security result comes from completing the rotation: one random password per account, a protected master passphrase, MFA or passkeys on important services, and no plaintext exports left behind.
