What does oud smell like?
Oud is a perfumery material associated with agarwood from Aquilaria trees. Its scent can be dark, smoky and earthy, or sweet, balsamic, spicy, resinous, marine or clean and woody, depending on the material and the notes around it. A 2026 style guide contrasts smoky Middle Eastern interpretations, sweet balsamic Indian styles and cleaner Western interpretations (Soundmali). Which oud perfume lasts the longest?

For an unfamiliar oud, try a sample, decant or travel spray before committing to a full bottle. A scent can change considerably between its opening and dry-down, and an oud style that seems appealing on paper may feel much stronger on your skin.
