For most TV-to-soundbar setups, the right choice is a standard male-to-male TOSLINK optical digital audio cable, long enough to follow your actual route with a little slack. Connect the TV’s optical digital audio output to the soundbar’s optical digital audio input. Before buying, confirm both devices have those ports and check their manuals for supported audio formats: an optical cable carries the audio the devices send and accept, but cannot add formats the connection does not support.

What to look for in an optical audio cable

Match the ports

Check that the TV has an optical digital audio output and the soundbar has an optical digital audio input. Port labels may say Optical, TOSLINK, or S/PDIF; confirm their function in the manuals, rather than relying on appearance alone. Philips identifies an optical S/PDIF input as TOSLINK in its soundbar manual, and Sony’s connection instructions specify TV OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT to soundbar OPTICAL DIGITAL IN.

Choose a suitable length

Measure the cable route between the devices, allowing a little slack for placement and gentle bends. The cited manufacturer guidance establishes how to connect the cable, but does not establish a universal maximum consumer cable length or a best length for every room. A longer or more expensive cable is not automatically a better match; buy for the route you need.

Check the format your setup needs

Optical transmits digital audio, but format support depends on the TV, soundbar, and source. Samsung’s UK setup guide, updated 11 August 2026, says optical does not carry some higher-bandwidth formats, including Dolby Digital Plus. Its comparison lists Dolby Digital 5.1 as supported over optical, but not Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD. Samsung’s German optical guidance describes S/PDIF as carrying Dolby Digital, DTS, or PCM, with audio up to 5.1 channels. Treat these as general connection limits, not a guarantee that every device supports every listed format: check both manuals.

KabelDirekt – Optical Audio TOSLINK Cable – 6ft – Soundbar
  • Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
  • Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
  • High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
  • 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
  • No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty

If Dolby Digital Plus or lossless, high-bitrate audio is important to your setup, check whether both devices support HDMI ARC or eARC and whether that connection meets your needs. Samsung’s comparison shows why optical may not suit every format requirement.

Optical versus other connection approaches

Connection situation What to use What to check
TV optical output and soundbar optical input A direct TOSLINK optical cable Choose the route length you need and verify the devices’ supported formats.
One device has optical and the other has coaxial digital audio A compatible optical-to-coaxial or coaxial-to-optical converter, or another connection both devices support Philips describes conversion for mismatched S/PDIF port types in its soundbar manual. A converter changes the connection type; it does not establish support for a particular audio format.
The setup needs formats optical does not carry Consider HDMI ARC/eARC if both devices support it Check the manuals for port support and audio-format compatibility.

A properly functioning cable should not be chosen on an assumed audible benefit from premium pricing or special construction: the cited sources do not establish a tested cable ranking or a sound-quality advantage between specific optical cables.

Connect the TV and soundbar

  1. Confirm the TV’s optical digital audio output and the soundbar’s optical digital audio input in their manuals.
  2. Remove any protective caps from the cable tips.
  3. Connect one end to TV OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT and the other to soundbar OPTICAL DIGITAL IN, as shown in Sony’s setup instructions.
  4. Select Optical or the corresponding optical input on the soundbar.
  5. Set the TV audio output to the external audio device. If there is no sound or the format is incompatible, try PCM as a compatibility test. Philips advises Standard or PCM output for a soundbar that does not support Dolby- or DTS-encoded audio; TCL’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends PCM as a compatible test setting.

Fix “optical cable connected, but no sound”

If the soundbar is silent after connection, check these items in order:

  • Remove the caps: Check both cable tips and remove any protective covers.
  • Reseat the cable: Disconnect and firmly reinsert both ends. Sony and TCL both advise checking that the cable is fully seated.
  • Verify direction: The cable must run from the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input—not output to output or input to input.
  • Select the correct source: Set the soundbar to its optical input and the TV to external audio output.
  • Test PCM: Change the TV’s digital audio output to PCM. If sound starts, the previous output format may not be supported by the soundbar or connection.
  • Recheck format compatibility: Consult both device manuals for supported digital audio formats if PCM works but another setting does not.

When to buy a converter

If one device has optical S/PDIF and the other has coaxial digital audio, a converter may bridge the port mismatch. Philips describes optical-to-coaxial and coaxial-to-optical conversion in its soundbar manual. Before buying one, check whether the TV and soundbar share another supported connection, such as HDMI ARC/eARC. A converter addresses the physical connection type only; verify audio-format support separately.
