For most handheld night shots, start with Camera → Image → NIGHT (on supported OPPO phones), tap your subject, and adjust the on-screen exposure slider if the scene is too dark or bright. Use Pro or Expert mode when the phone can be stabilized: keep ISO as low as practical, lengthen the shutter for still subjects, and adjust EV. Moving people, pets, and vehicles need a faster shutter, even if that means more ISO noise. A tripod, tabletop, or other solid support is the most effective accessory for slow-shutter and long-exposure work.
Quick settings for common night scenes
Use this table as a starting decision guide rather than a universal preset. OPPO camera controls, shutter ranges, RAW support, and even the names Pro and Expert vary by model and ColorOS or OxygenOS version.
| Scene | Start here | Adjust when |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld street, restaurant, or dim room | Night mode; tap the subject and adjust exposure if your model shows the control | Lower exposure around bright signs; raise it only when important shadow detail is lost |
| Static building, landscape, or city lights | Pro/Expert; lowest usable ISO, slower shutter, EV as needed; support the phone | Use a faster shutter if people or traffic enter the frame |
| Moving person, pet, or vehicle | Pro/Expert with a faster shutter; increase ISO only as much as necessary | Raise shutter speed until motion is acceptably sharp, then balance brightness with ISO |
| Light trails or another long exposure | Tripod or fixed mount, ISO 100 starting point, manual/infinity focus, shutter longer than 2 seconds when appropriate | Shorten the shutter if highlights clip or moving elements become excessive |
| Maximum editing latitude | Pro/Expert RAW when available; capture JPG plus DNG | Use RAW only when you intend to edit and have enough storage |
Night mode: the practical default for handheld photos
Night mode is the sensible first choice when you are holding the phone in your hands. On supported Reno models, OPPO documents the path as Camera → Image → NIGHT. The exact labels can differ on other devices, so look for Night or NIGHT in the camera mode strip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to shoot a handheld night photo
- Open the Camera app and select Image (or the equivalent still-photo mode).
- Choose NIGHT.
- Tap the subject or the area whose brightness matters. Tapping tells autofocus and exposure where to prioritize.
- If an exposure or brightness slider appears, slide up to brighten a very dark subject or down to protect bright lamps, signs, and windows.
- Frame the shot, press the shutter, and keep the phone still until capture finishes. Moving before the capture completes can soften fine detail.
Night mode is optimized for a quick result without requiring you to select ISO or shutter speed. It is particularly useful for streets, restaurants, rooms, and other scenes where you cannot set up support. It cannot remove the fundamental effect of subject movement: a person walking during the capture can still look blurred.

When to leave Night mode
Switch to Pro or Expert when you can brace the phone, need a particular shutter speed, want to control focus or white balance, or plan to record RAW. Manual control is also preferable when Night mode repeatedly brightens a scene beyond the mood you want or produces blur in moving subjects.
Pro and Expert mode: control the light deliberately
Depending on the phone and software version, the manual camera may be labeled Pro or Expert. OPPO manuals describe ISO, shutter speed, EV, focus, and white balance as available controls, but not every model exposes every control on every lens.
ISO: use the lowest value that still permits a sharp shutter
ISO controls the sensor’s sensitivity. A lower ISO generally gives a cleaner file with less visible noise. In a dark scene, however, keeping ISO low while using an excessively slow shutter can create motion blur from hand movement or a moving subject. Raise ISO only after deciding how much shutter speed the subject requires.
OPPO’s guidance is to increase ISO in low light and decrease it in brighter conditions to prevent excessive noise. Treat that as a trade-off, not as a fixed “night ISO.” There is no single best ISO across OPPO models because sensors, lenses, stabilization, available light, and the subject all differ.
Shutter speed: decide whether the scene or the subject may move
The shutter determines how long the sensor receives light. A slower shutter gathers more light and can keep ISO lower, which is useful for a stationary building or landscape. It also records movement for longer: hand shake, leaves, traffic, or a person walking can become streaks or blur.

Use a faster shutter when a person, pet, bicycle, or car must be frozen. If the frame becomes too dark, increase ISO rather than slowing the shutter until the subject blurs. For a static scene, do the opposite: stabilize the phone and lengthen the shutter before resorting to extreme ISO.
EV: correct the camera’s brightness decision
Exposure compensation (EV) shifts the camera’s chosen exposure brighter or darker. Raise EV when the important subject is underexposed and lower it when bright lamps, illuminated signs, or windows are losing detail. EV is a refinement after you have chosen an appropriate shutter and ISO; it cannot make a moving subject sharp by itself.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

For ordinary night scenes, tap the subject to focus. Autofocus can struggle with a distant, low-contrast scene, reflections, or a dark landscape. If your Pro/Expert interface offers AF/MF, switch to manual focus and set a distant static subject near infinity. Check the preview at high magnification before taking the final frame; infinity is useful for distant scenes but can be wrong for a nearby subject.
White balance: keep colors consistent under artificial light
Auto white balance is convenient when a scene mixes moonlight, shop lighting, and street lamps. If all of the illumination has a strong color cast and you want a consistent series, select a manual white-balance setting if your phone provides one. Make a test frame before committing; correcting color in a JPG is less flexible than adjusting a RAW file.

Handheld streets, restaurants, and rooms
Choose Night mode and give the phone time to complete the capture. Brace your elbows against your body, lean on a wall, or hold the phone with both hands. Tap the person or object that matters. If a lamp dominates the frame, lower exposure slightly so the light does not overwhelm the rest of the image. If people are moving, take several frames or switch to Pro/Expert with a faster shutter; a brighter but blurred photograph is usually less useful than a slightly noisier sharp one.

Static architecture and landscapes
Use Pro/Expert when you can rest the phone on a solid surface. Start with the lowest ISO that still allows the shutter you need, then lengthen the shutter for more light. Set focus on the distant subject, or use manual/infinity focus if autofocus is unreliable. Review highlights around lamps and windows and reduce EV or shorten the shutter if they clip.

Movement changes the priority. Select a faster shutter first, then increase ISO until the subject is bright enough. Ask a person to pause when possible, anticipate a pet’s movement, and use bursts only if your model offers them. Do not copy the low-ISO, slow-shutter settings that work for a building: they will record a moving figure as a smear.
Mixed scenes with both movement and still detail
Choose the element that must be sharp. If a person is the subject, expose for the faster shutter and accept some background noise. If the building is the subject and moving people are incidental, use a slower shutter with support and accept motion trails. There is no setting that simultaneously freezes fast movement and gathers maximum light without a corresponding increase in ISO or additional light.
Long exposures and light trails
Long exposures require stability. OPPO’s long-exposure guidance recommends fixing the phone to a tripod, using minimum ISO (100), setting focus to infinity, keeping the shutter slow—more than 2 seconds when appropriate—and staying steady. Use a phone tripod mount or another rigid fixture; handholding is not a substitute for support at these durations.
Step-by-step long-exposure setup
- Attach the phone securely to a tripod or place it on a surface where it cannot slide or vibrate.
- Open Pro/Expert mode, or the phone’s dedicated long-exposure option if one is available.
- Set ISO to 100 when that value is offered and the scene is bright enough for it.
- Set manual focus to infinity for distant architecture, skylines, or light trails. For a nearer subject, focus at its actual distance instead.
- Choose a shutter longer than 2 seconds when the scene calls for trails or additional light. Start shorter if bright signs are already near clipping.
- Trigger the shutter without touching the phone during exposure. Use a timer or remote trigger if your model provides one.
- Inspect highlights and motion. Shorten the shutter or lower EV if lights are blown out; lengthen it only when the frame remains too dark.
Long exposure records moving lights as lines and moving people as partial or transparent forms. That is an effect, not a defect, when intentional. A stationary subject still benefits from the same support because even tiny vibrations reduce detail.

RAW and DNG for night editing
When supported, Pro/Expert RAW capture saves a JPG and a DNG. The JPG is convenient for sharing; the DNG retains more editing latitude for adjusting exposure, shadows, highlights, and white balance. RAW files are larger and need an editor, so they are worthwhile when you plan to process the image rather than post it immediately.
When RAW helps
- Recovering moderate shadow detail from a static scene exposed carefully.
- Reducing a strong color cast from street lighting with a white-balance adjustment.
- Balancing bright signs against darker surroundings without relying solely on a finished JPG.
- Maintaining a high-quality source for later cropping or printing.
RAW limitations
- RAW does not freeze motion; shutter speed still determines blur.
- It does not eliminate sensor noise created by high ISO.
- Not every OPPO model or software version offers RAW, and support may differ by lens.
- Every capture creates both a JPG and DNG, so storage fills faster.
Use RAW only when those benefits justify the extra files. For a quick message or social post, the processed JPG from Night mode may be the more practical result.
How to prevent blurry low-light photos
Blur has two main causes: camera movement and subject movement. Diagnose which one you see before changing settings.
Camera-shake symptoms
Edges throughout the frame look doubled or smeared, including stationary buildings. Brace the phone, use a tabletop or tripod, and shorten the shutter if support is unavailable. A lower ISO is not a victory if the resulting exposure is unusably soft.

Subject-motion symptoms
The background is sharp but a person, pet, or vehicle is blurred. Increase shutter speed in Pro/Expert and raise ISO only enough to maintain brightness. Ask the subject to pause or use a brighter location when possible.
Best Value

- Swaps easily between handheld selfie stick and stand-alone tripod for dual-purpose use
- Whether you're an amateur, enthusiast or professional, this is a must-have accesory for shooting on the go
Focus errors
One distance is sharp while the intended subject is not. Tap the subject again, avoid shooting through reflective glass, and use manual focus for a distant static scene if autofocus continues to hunt. Check focus at preview magnification before taking a series.
Exposure and highlight problems
If signs and lamps are white patches, lower EV or shorten the shutter. If the subject disappears into black, raise EV or lengthen the shutter only when movement and stability permit. Do not judge the scene solely by the phone’s bright preview; inspect the captured image.
Choosing between Night and Pro/Expert
| Priority | Better starting mode | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fast handheld result | Night | It is designed for low-light scenes and exposes the controls you need without manual setup |
| Specific shutter for motion | Pro/Expert | You decide how much movement is recorded and trade ISO against shutter speed |
| Lowest noise on a static subject | Pro/Expert with support | A slower shutter can admit more light while ISO stays low |
| Consistent focus or color across a series | Pro/Expert | Manual focus and white balance can prevent frame-to-frame changes when available |
| Editing the exposure later | Pro/Expert RAW | Supported phones save a DNG alongside the JPG |
Model and software differences to check
OPPO states that camera pictures, settings, and paths can differ by phone. ColorOS and OxygenOS manuals also use version-specific names, including Pro and Expert. Shutter ranges, ISO limits, lens selection, manual focus, white balance, and RAW/DNG availability are not universal.
Before following a setting recipe, open the camera and verify which controls your device actually displays. A missing RAW toggle is a model or software limitation, not a setting you can unlock with a different ISO. The Night-mode path given above applies to supported Reno models; other phones may place Night elsewhere in the mode carousel.
A repeatable night-shooting workflow
- Identify movement. Decide whether the subject or camera will move during capture.
- Pick the mode. Use Night for handheld convenience; choose Pro/Expert when you need a controlled shutter, focus, white balance, or RAW.
- Stabilize first. Use a tripod, table, wall, or firm grip before lowering ISO or lengthening the shutter.
- Set the shutter for the subject. Slow for static scenes, fast for people, pets, and vehicles.
- Set ISO second. Keep it as low as the chosen shutter and available light allow; raise it when a slower shutter would blur the subject.
- Focus deliberately. Tap the subject, then use manual/infinity focus only for suitable distant scenes.
- Balance brightness. Adjust EV to protect bright lights or reveal the important subject.
- Check color and framing. Leave white balance on auto for changing light or set it manually for a consistent series.
- Review at full size. Look for shake, motion blur, missed focus, clipped highlights, and excessive noise before moving on.
- Choose the file type. Keep JPG for immediate sharing; enable RAW when you will edit and have storage.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using a slow shutter handheld: support the phone or shorten the shutter and accept more ISO.
- Using low ISO for moving subjects: increase shutter speed first, then raise ISO as needed.
- Raising ISO before stabilizing: try a tripod or solid surface so the shutter can remain slower and the file cleaner.
- Leaving exposure unchanged under bright lamps: lower EV or shorten the shutter to preserve highlight detail.
- Assuming every OPPO has the same controls: check the labels and ranges on the exact phone and software version.
- Expecting RAW to fix blur: RAW improves editing flexibility but cannot undo movement or missed focus.
- Moving during a Night-mode capture: hold still until the camera finishes recording.
Bottom line
Use Night mode for quick handheld darkness, and use Pro/Expert when support and control matter. Keep ISO low for static scenes only when the phone is stable; choose a faster shutter for movement and accept the necessary ISO increase. For exposures longer than 2 seconds, OPPO’s own guidance is to use a tripod, ISO 100 when suitable, infinity focus, and steady handling. Because OPPO’s camera controls differ by model and software version, treat these as decision rules and starting points, then adjust the controls your phone actually provides.
