If you want open-world games with beautiful scenery, readable outdoor spaces and freedom to explore at your own pace, start with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It offers the most improvisational discovery. Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for slow, immersive travel through a living western landscape; Forza Horizon 5 for bright sightseeing from behind the wheel; The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for quest-rich wandering; and Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic samurai landscapes.
“Daylight exploration” does not mean these worlds stay bright at all times. Each includes some combination of night cycles, combat, danger or darker missions. The useful distinction is whether the game makes outdoor travel, scenery and self-directed discovery central rather than treating them as a short break between tightly controlled encounters.
Quick comparison
| Game | Best for | Exploration freedom | Daylight scenery | Combat pressure | Traversal style | Platform note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | Curiosity-led discovery | Very high; choose a direction and investigate | Bright wilderness, overlooks and varied outdoor routes | Present, but often avoidable while travelling | Climb, glide and walk | Nintendo Switch edition is the natural purchase anchor |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Immersive scenic travel | High between story missions | Open country, towns, wildlife and changing western vistas | High; violence is part of the story and world | Horseback travel and riding through the landscape | Check the current console or PC edition and listing |
| Forza Horizon 5 | Vehicle-based sightseeing | High within a driving-focused structure | Mexican cities, deserts and ancient ruins | None in the character-combat sense | Fast driving across a large map | Verify the current platform, edition and online requirements |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Quest-rich wandering | Very high; leave the main quest whenever you wish | Mountains, settlements and outdoor roads, with night cycles | Frequent fantasy danger, caves and dungeons | Walking and open-ended route finding | Skyrim Special Edition is the practical edition to check first |
| Ghost of Tsushima | Cinematic landscape traversal | High, but more directed than Breath of the Wild | Fields, forests and coastal scenery shaped for visual composition | Substantial and focused samurai combat | Deliberate travel across a guided open world | Confirm the current PlayStation or PC listing and edition |
The comparison is about fit, not a universal ranking. A player who dislikes combat may prefer Forza Horizon 5 even if another game offers more wilderness freedom. Someone who wants side quests and character development may find Skyrim more rewarding than a purely scenic driving game.
What “daylight exploration” means in an open-world game
For this guide, daylight exploration means that the game consistently rewards looking outward: following a road because the view is interesting, climbing to see what lies beyond a ridge, riding through a town without a mission marker, or choosing a longer route simply because it passes through a memorable landscape. It is a preference for readable scenery and low-friction movement, not a promise that every hour is sunny or peaceful.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Five qualities matter most:
- Outdoor readability: Landscapes, roads and landmarks remain easy to distinguish, so sightseeing is enjoyable rather than visually oppressive.
- Self-directed movement: You can select a direction or destination without being forced through a fixed sequence.
- Reasons to linger: Wildlife, towns, ruins, side activities or discoveries make travel worthwhile even when no main quest is active.
- A traversal method that suits you: Walking, climbing, gliding, riding or driving changes how much of the world you actually notice.
- A tolerable threat level: Combat can exist, but it should not make every scenic detour feel like an interruption.
These games occupy different points on that spectrum. Forza Horizon 5 is the least combat-focused, while Red Dead Redemption 2 and Ghost of Tsushima put more pressure on the player. Skyrim offers the largest mix of quests, danger and free wandering, and Breath of the Wild gives the most freedom to experiment with routes.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: best for curiosity-led exploration
Why it fits
Breath of the Wild is the clearest recommendation when your priority is deciding what to investigate next. You can pick a direction, climb toward a visible landmark, glide over obstacles and examine points of interest without following a rigid route. The world is designed around the question “What is over there?” rather than “Which objective must I complete before I can leave?”
That structure makes the game unusually good for players who enjoy forming their own sightseeing itinerary. A distant tower, unusual rock formation or settlement can become the day’s destination, and the route to it is part of the experience. Because climbing and gliding are central traversal options, the landscape is not limited to roads or marked paths.
How the exploration loop feels
The basic loop is simple: notice something, decide whether it is reachable, find a route and investigate. You may approach directly, circle around a barrier, climb for a better view or glide from a high point. This gives short journeys a sense of discovery and makes long journeys feel like a collection of small decisions rather than a single commute.
The game also respects players who want to pause the main story. You can spend a session moving between outdoor discoveries instead of advancing a quest chain. That makes it especially suitable for relaxed play sessions where the goal is to see what the world offers rather than to maximize progress.
Where it is less relaxing
Breath of the Wild is not a combat-free sightseeing simulator. Enemies occupy parts of the landscape, and some discoveries lead to challenges. The world also changes with weather and time, so a bright outing can become less comfortable. The important distinction is that you usually have room to route around trouble or postpone it. Combat is one possible response to the world, not the only reason to enter it.
Choose it if
- You want the greatest freedom to choose a direction and improvise.
- Climbing and gliding sound more appealing than following roads.
- You enjoy discovering points of interest without a constant objective list.
- You can accept occasional combat and changing conditions in exchange for a highly open-ended world.
Use “Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch” when checking the current edition and purchase listing. Availability and packaging can change, so confirm the platform and edition shown at the time you buy.

Red Dead Redemption 2: best for scenic travel in a living western world
Why it fits
Red Dead Redemption 2 treats travel itself as a major activity. Its western setting combines open country, towns and wildlife, giving you reasons to stay on the road even when you are not advancing a story mission. Riding through the landscape can be the point of a session: observe the surroundings, pass through settlements, or take a slower route because it feels more interesting.
GameSpot’s 2026 open-world coverage emphasizes the scale of the setting and the many activities available between missions. That density matters for daylight-focused players because scenic travel does not have to be empty time. The environment is populated enough to support observation and unplanned stops.
What makes the scenery immersive
The game’s strongest fit is for players who want a world that feels inhabited rather than arranged as a sequence of isolated attractions. Roads connect towns, open spaces invite long rides and wildlife gives the countryside a reason to watch rather than simply cross. The result is a slower, more observational form of exploration than the climb-and-glide freedom of Breath of the Wild.
This pace is a feature, not a flaw, if you enjoy letting a journey unfold. It is less suitable if you want to reach every viewpoint immediately or experiment with vertical routes. The game asks you to spend time in transit and accept that travel has its own rhythm.

Important tone and content warning
Red Dead Redemption 2 should not be presented as a gentle sightseeing game without qualification. Its story and world include substantial violence, and its mature western tone can be intense. Scenic rides are available, but they exist inside a narrative built around danger, conflict and morally difficult situations.
Choose it if
- You want the most immersive sense of travelling through a populated landscape.
- Wildlife, towns and open-country riding appeal more than rapid fast travel.
- You are comfortable with a mature story and frequent violence.
- You prefer directed scenic travel to completely free-form experimentation.

Forza Horizon 5: best for vehicle-based sightseeing
Why it fits
Forza Horizon 5 is the strongest choice when you want to explore by car and keep combat out of the experience. Tom’s Guide describes its open-world setting in Mexico, with hundreds of vehicles and routes through cities, deserts and ancient ruins. GameSpot likewise identifies it as an open-world Mexico driving experience.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

The vehicle focus changes the meaning of freedom. You are not wandering on foot or building a character’s travel skills; you are choosing where to drive and how quickly to get there. A bright landscape passes continuously in front of you, and the car gives you an efficient way to move between very different environments.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why it works for sightseeing
Driving provides constant motion without requiring you to fight for every view. You can cross a desert, enter a city or pass an ancient ruin in the same session, then return to a favorite stretch of road when you want a scenic run. The broad selection of vehicles also lets you choose the feel of the journey, from a relaxed cruise to a high-speed route.
Its activity structure is more competitive than the other recommendations. Optional online competition is available for players who want it, but you do not need to treat every drive as a contest. If you prefer a quiet solo outing, concentrate on exploring the map and selecting routes rather than chasing events.
Trade-offs for non-racing players
Forza Horizon 5 is still a racing game. Its world is built around vehicles, driving challenges and speed, so it will not provide the same kind of walking-level observation as Skyrim or Ghost of Tsushima. Players who want conversations, character-building or hand-to-hand exploration should choose another game.
Choose it if
- You want the least combat-heavy option in this list.
- Driving through bright Mexican scenery sounds better than travelling on foot.
- You value fast traversal between cities, deserts and ruins.
- You are comfortable with an activity structure centered on cars and optional online competition.
Before buying, verify the current platform, edition and any online requirements shown in the store listing. The available versions can change, and “hundreds of vehicles” describes the game’s broad vehicle selection rather than a promise that every car is included in every edition.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: best for quest-rich wandering
Why it fits
Skyrim is the best match for players who want scenery and an extensive supply of things to do. You can leave the main quest, enter a settlement, investigate a cave, discover a side quest or work on your character without following a prescribed order. Its appeal comes from the combination of wandering and progression: almost any detour can become part of a longer personal story.
GameSpot presents Skyrim as a major open-world option, and Whatoplay includes it among highly rated PC open-world games with a broad platform history. Rather than treating those references as a guarantee for every edition, use them as a reminder to check the specific version available on your system.

How it differs from Breath of the Wild
Both games support unplanned travel, but Skyrim is more quest- and character-centered. Breath of the Wild emphasizes physical problem-solving through climbing and gliding; Skyrim emphasizes choosing activities, building a character and following the consequences of the places you visit. If you want a world that continually offers narrative errands, Skyrim has the denser structure.
That density also means more interruption. Caves and dungeons are frequent destinations, and danger is a normal part of leaving the road. You can spend time outdoors in the daylight, but the world includes night cycles and darker fantasy content. “Daylight-friendly” is accurate; “always bright and peaceful” is not.
Recommended Free Tools
Managing the darker parts
Players who prefer sightseeing can make deliberate choices about when to enter a dungeon or pursue a dangerous quest. Treat settlements and outdoor routes as destinations in their own right, and leave a cave for a session when you are in the mood for combat. This approach preserves the game’s freedom without pretending that its fantasy threats are optional everywhere.
Choose it if
- You want the broadest mix of side quests, settlements, caves and character development.
- You enjoy wandering that can turn into a story-driven adventure.
- You are comfortable with night cycles, dungeons and darker fantasy material.
- You prefer a long campaign with many possible priorities rather than a purely scenic sandbox.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ghost of Tsushima: best for cinematic samurai landscapes
Why it fits
Ghost of Tsushima suits players who want open-world travel with a strong visual identity and a clear dramatic direction. GameSpot identifies it as a leading samurai open-world game, while PlayStation’s official open-world editorial places it in the current console conversation. Its landscapes move through fields, forests and coastal areas, and the game presents those spaces as cinematic destinations rather than neutral ground between missions.
The result is more directed than Breath of the Wild but still generous enough for detours. You can travel at a deliberate pace, take in the scenery and follow a route that feels visually composed. The world encourages you to notice how a field opens toward a forest or how a coastal path changes the character of a journey.
What the combat means for sightseeing
Ghost of Tsushima includes a focused combat system, and combat is a substantial part of the experience. That makes it a poor fit for anyone seeking completely passive tourism. It is a strong fit for players who enjoy scenic travel but want each dangerous encounter to feel purposeful and readable rather than chaotic.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Compared with Red Dead Redemption 2, its travel is less about simulating an everyday ride through a living society and more about presenting a focused samurai journey. Compared with Skyrim, it offers less emphasis on open-ended character building and more emphasis on visual direction and a coherent central story.
Choose it if
- You want fields, forests and coastlines presented with cinematic visual direction.
- You prefer deliberate travel and focused combat to complete freedom or racing.
- You want a samurai setting with a strong sense of place.
- You can accept that scenic exploration remains tied to substantial combat.
Check the current PlayStation or PC listing and edition before purchase. Platform support and included versions can change, so rely on the listing for your system rather than assuming that every release has identical features.
How to choose the right game for your kind of sightseeing
If freedom matters more than story
Choose Breath of the Wild. Its defining advantage is the ability to set a direction, climb or glide toward an objective and change plans whenever another discovery catches your attention. The game does not require you to turn every detour into a quest.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf travel itself should feel like the activity
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2. Riding through open country, observing wildlife and passing through towns gives movement a deliberate pace. Accept the mature tone and violence before choosing it for a household or a relaxed evening.
If you want scenery with the least combat
Choose Forza Horizon 5. You can cover cities, deserts and ancient ruins by car, and optional online competition does not change the fact that its core activity is driving rather than fighting. This is the clearest answer for a reader who wants sightseeing without character combat.
If side quests and progression are essential
Choose Skyrim. Its sandbox supports long-term wandering, and a trip that begins as sightseeing can become a side quest, cave visit or character-building project. Plan for nights, dungeons and fantasy danger rather than expecting a consistently bright atmosphere.
If presentation and atmosphere come first
Choose Ghost of Tsushima. Its fields, forests and coastal landscapes are arranged for cinematic travel, and its focused combat gives the journey dramatic weight. It is less open-ended than Breath of the Wild and more combat-heavy than Forza Horizon 5.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePractical checks before you buy
- Confirm your platform first. Store pages, editions and platform listings change. Check the current listing for your console or PC rather than relying on an old recommendation.
- Decide how much combat you will tolerate. Forza Horizon 5 minimizes the issue; Breath of the Wild allows more route flexibility; Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Ghost of Tsushima make danger more central.
- Choose your preferred traversal speed. Driving is fastest, horseback travel is slower and observational, walking supports quest discovery, and climbing or gliding offers the most route experimentation.
- Check your appetite for structure. Breath of the Wild favors curiosity, Skyrim favors quests and character growth, Red Dead Redemption 2 favors a directed living world, Ghost of Tsushima favors cinematic progression and Forza Horizon 5 favors driving activities.
- Set expectations about daylight. None of these games guarantees permanent sunshine or the absence of dark content. Treat daylight exploration as the dominant flavor of the outdoor experience, not a technical setting that removes night.
Final recommendation by player type
For the broadest freedom and the lowest friction between noticing a landmark and reaching it, pick Breath of the Wild. For the richest sense of a journey through an inhabited landscape, pick Red Dead Redemption 2 if its mature violence is acceptable. For pure vehicle sightseeing with no character combat, pick Forza Horizon 5. For the deepest combination of wandering, quests and character-building, pick Skyrim. For the most deliberately composed samurai scenery, pick Ghost of Tsushima.
