If Adults Only or M-rated games are unavailable in your household, start with the official rating and its content descriptors—not the marketing label “family-friendly.” The strongest open-world alternatives in this guide are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Minecraft, both rated E10+ by the ESRB. No Man’s Sky is a more intense Teen-rated option, while LEGO Fortnite offers family-oriented Fortnite open worlds but still requires a check of the current platform rating, online controls and purchases.
ESRB ratings are U.S.-specific. E10+ means content is generally suitable for ages 10 and up; Teen means content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. Neither rating replaces a household decision about violence, online communication, suggestive material, blood, alcohol references or spending.
How to choose when Adults Only games are off-limits
An open world describes the way a game lets you move through and interact with a large environment. It does not guarantee a particular age level, amount of violence or degree of online safety. Use four checks before installing or buying:
- Official age rating and descriptors: Read the rating entry, not only the box art or store description.
- Core activity: Decide whether the player wants puzzles and guided discovery, construction, survival systems, or cooperative exploration.
- Interaction and spending: “Users Interact” indicates that other players may be part of the experience. “In-Game Purchases” means the edition or service includes spending features that need family controls.
- Edition and platform: Ratings, content updates, saved worlds and available controls can differ by edition or platform. Digital availability and physical stock change, so check the current store listing.
The four choices below cover different interpretations of “open world.” Breath of the Wild is a curated fantasy adventure, Minecraft is an evolving sandbox, No Man’s Sky is a systems-heavy space exploration game, and LEGO Fortnite is a family-oriented Fortnite experience built around exploration and construction.

Quick comparison
| Game | Rating and disclosed content | Best fit | Main decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | E10+; Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol | Guided discovery, shrines, puzzles and a curated fantasy world | Its combat and listed mild themes may not fit a strict no-violence or no-alcohol rule. |
| Minecraft | E10+; Fantasy Violence; Users Interact and In-Game Purchases listed by ESRB | Building, creativity and self-directed solo or shared play | Online interaction, Marketplace content and purchases require family settings and an edition check. |
| No Man’s Sky | Teen; Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence; Users Interact | Space exploration, survival systems, crafting and discovery | The Teen rating, weapons, animated blood and online interaction make it the least suitable for stricter younger-player limits. |
| LEGO Fortnite | LEGO describes family-oriented open worlds; verify the platform’s current rating and settings | Cooperative building and themed exploration | It is a Fortnite experience with online features. Physical LEGO sets are separate purchases. |
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Why it is the best authored exploration choice
Breath of the Wild is the clearest recommendation for a player who wants an expansive world with a strong sense of direction. You travel across a designed fantasy landscape, gather materials, solve environmental puzzles and enter shrines that provide short, self-contained challenges. The world encourages experimentation: climbing, gliding, cooking and using the environment are as important to progress as fighting.
The result is open exploration without the unrestricted construction and resource-management burden of a sandbox. A younger player can follow a main objective, wander toward an interesting landmark or pause for shrine puzzles. That balance makes it easier for a parent to understand what the player is doing than a game whose content is generated indefinitely.
Rating and content to discuss first
The ESRB rates Breath of the Wild E10+ and lists Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes and Use of Alcohol. E10+ is generally suitable for ages 10 and up, but the descriptors matter more than the number for a household with stricter rules. The combat is presented in a stylized fantasy setting, yet the player still uses swords, bows and other weapons against creatures and enemies. The alcohol reference is brief, but it is part of the official disclosure.

Platforms and edition check
The game is available on Nintendo Switch and Wii U. Confirm the edition and region before purchase, especially if a child uses a particular Nintendo console or a family account with store restrictions. The rating cited here is the U.S. ESRB entry; another regional board may use a different age number or wording.

Who should choose it
- Choose it for a player who wants exploration to lead naturally into puzzles and story objectives.
- Choose it when a single-player adventure is preferable to public online interaction.
- Look elsewhere if any fantasy combat, mild suggestive themes or alcohol references violate the household rule.
Minecraft
Why it is the strongest creative and flexible option
Minecraft is built around exploration, mining, building and crafting. Its official description calls it an evolving open-world game, with regular updates and Marketplace content. Instead of following one fixed route, players decide what to make: a small shelter, a transportation network, a farm, a large architectural project or an underground base.
This freedom makes Minecraft useful for different ages and play styles. A player can spend an entire session gathering resources, designing a structure or exploring a new area without needing to complete a story mission. The official parents guide says that single-player lets you experience the world at your own pace, which is valuable when a family wants a calmer, controlled introduction to open-world play.

Rating, interaction and purchases
The ESRB rates Minecraft E10+ with Fantasy Violence. Its ESRB entry also lists Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. The violence is tied to creatures and fantasy enemies, but the interaction and spending descriptors deserve equal attention.
Online play can introduce communication with other people, shared servers and community-created activity. Use the child account, console controls and in-game privacy settings to decide who can join, message or interact. If the player is using a shared family world, clarify who has permission to modify or delete builds.
Marketplace content can add optional purchases to an otherwise open-ended game. Disable spending or require an adult approval step if that matches your household policy. Because Minecraft has multiple editions and continuing content updates, verify that the edition on the intended platform has the controls and features you expect.

How to make Minecraft fit a stricter household
- Choose the play mode deliberately. Start with a solo world if the goal is to avoid outside interaction. Creative mode removes the pressure of gathering resources and survival combat; a survival world retains more challenge and fantasy danger.
- Set account and device controls. Review multiplayer permissions, chat or communication settings and purchase approval before handing over the controller.
- Explain world ownership. Decide whether the child may invite others, download Marketplace content or alter a shared family world.
- Recheck after updates. Minecraft evolves through updates and Marketplace content, so a setting or available feature should be checked again after a major edition or account change.
Who should choose it
- Choose it for building, engineering-style problem solving and long-term creative projects.
- Choose it when the player wants solo play at their own pace or a deliberately configured shared world.
- Choose another game if any fantasy violence is unacceptable or if your family cannot supervise online interaction and purchases.
No Man’s Sky
Why it stands out for space discovery
No Man’s Sky is the most systems-heavy game in this group. Its emphasis is planetary exploration, resource gathering, equipment upgrades, alien life and space combat. The player moves between discoveries and survival tasks rather than completing a short sequence of authored puzzle rooms. That makes it appealing to someone who wants a science-fiction universe with many locations and a constant reason to upgrade equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExploration is tightly connected to management. Resources support equipment, equipment expands what can be reached, and encounters can involve hostile creatures or combat in space. Players who enjoy planning, collecting and improving a toolkit will find more depth here than in a purely sightseeing-focused open world.
Teen rating and suitability
The ESRB rates No Man’s Sky Teen and lists Animated Blood and Fantasy Violence. The entry also includes Users Interact. ESRB defines Teen content as generally suitable for ages 13 and up, so this is not a direct substitute for an E10+ game when a household has an age-based limit.
The animated presentation does not remove the presence of blood or weapons. Space combat, hostile encounters and survival pressure are central systems rather than occasional background details. Online interaction adds another layer that should be reviewed through the relevant account and platform controls.
Who should choose it
- Choose it for an older player who wants science-fiction exploration, crafting and progression systems.
- Choose it when a Teen rating is acceptable and the household is comfortable with animated blood and fantasy violence.
- Do not use it as the default recommendation for a younger player simply because the setting is colorful or non-realistic.
LEGO Fortnite
What the experience offers
LEGO Fortnite provides family-oriented open-world experiences inside Fortnite. LEGO describes these worlds as vast and unique to each player, with exploration and construction as major attractions. The format is a natural fit for players who like collecting materials, building structures and working with familiar LEGO-style themes rather than following a traditional adventure campaign.

Cooperative building can be its biggest strength. Players can plan a settlement, gather resources and explore together, making the game suitable for a family session when everyone agrees on communication and access rules.
Do not confuse the digital game with LEGO sets
LEGO confirms that physical construction sets based on its characters and items are available. Those products are separate purchases from the digital game. Buying a physical set does not provide access to the game, and playing the game does not make a physical set necessary.
Rating and online settings
Unlike the three ESRB entries above, the supplied LEGO guidance describes the experience as family-oriented without giving one universal age descriptor for every platform or configuration. Check the current platform rating, parental controls and Fortnite account settings before a child plays.
LEGO Fortnite remains a Fortnite experience, so online features and account permissions matter. Decide who can communicate, who can join a world and whether purchases require adult approval. Platform policies and digital features can change, making a current check more reliable than an old setup guide.
Who should choose it
- Choose it for cooperative exploration and construction with a LEGO-themed presentation.
- Choose it when the family is prepared to configure an online Fortnite account rather than treating the game as an offline toy.
- Choose another option if the household permits only a clearly defined offline game with a fixed ESRB rating.
Which game is right for a specific restriction?
If the player wants the least complicated starting point
Start with Breath of the Wild when the priority is a clearly authored single-player adventure. It has a defined ESRB rating and a focused set of activities: traversal, shrines, foraging and fantasy combat. Review its three descriptors first, because the E10+ label alone does not capture every concern.

If building matters more than story
Choose Minecraft. Its open-ended structure lets the player set the pace and the objective. Configure single-player or a private shared world, then handle Marketplace purchases through account controls.
If the player wants space and deeper systems
Choose No Man’s Sky only when the Teen threshold is acceptable. It offers the broadest science-fiction systems mix in this shortlist, but animated blood, fantasy violence, weapons and online interaction make it a poor fit for strict younger-player limits.
If the family wants to build together
Consider LEGO Fortnite after checking the current rating and online settings for the specific platform. Its family-oriented presentation is attractive, but the Fortnite account environment still needs supervision.
Practical screening checklist
Use this checklist before a purchase, download or account handoff:
- Read the current rating and every content descriptor.
- Confirm the player’s age against your household rule, not only the minimum suggested age.
- Identify whether combat is optional, occasional or central to progression.
- Check for Users Interact, multiplayer, voice or text communication and invitation controls.
- Check for In-Game Purchases, Marketplace content and approval requirements.
- Verify the exact platform and edition, particularly for Minecraft and Nintendo hardware.
- Review the current store listing because digital features, platform support and physical availability can change.
- For younger players, watch or play the opening section together before allowing unsupervised sessions.
Bottom line
For most players blocked from Adults Only or M-rated titles, Breath of the Wild is the best guided open-world adventure and Minecraft is the best creative sandbox. LEGO Fortnite is a strong cooperative option when its online environment is configured carefully. No Man’s Sky belongs on the list only for players who meet the Teen threshold and are comfortable with animated blood, fantasy violence and online interaction. In every case, read the actual descriptors and check the current edition settings before deciding.
