For a self-hosted, headless 24/7 YouTube stream, FFmpeg is the most direct open-source building block; OBS Studio is better if you want a graphical encoder and scene workflow; Stream247 offers a purpose-built dashboard around a headless relay. None is established as a universal reliability or performance winner. Each still needs a host that stays online, valid YouTube ingest settings, and a plan to detect and recover from failures.
Which tool fits your workflow?
These options solve related but different problems: encoding and automation, graphical stream production, or managing a headless relay. The project descriptions document features, not controlled reliability or performance comparisons.
| Tool | What it does | Best fit | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube Live without keeping your own computer online. | Creators who want a managed, always-on stream rather than a self-hosted open-source setup. | Not open source; YouTube only. See the cloud section below for plan details. |
| FFmpeg | A command-line media tool; a community deployment example loops local video and audio files and sends RTMP from an Ubuntu VPS, with systemd restart behavior. See the documented example. | People comfortable scripting and operating a headless Linux host. | You configure input handling, output settings, monitoring, and recovery. Media may need normalization; the example does not establish hardware or hosting requirements. |
| OBS Studio | A graphical encoder with scene and streaming workflows. The OBS Project describes it as open-source software under GPLv2 and free for commercial use. OBS connection troubleshooting. | Operators who want a GUI or need scenes and other production controls. | For unattended operation, the computer and OBS must stay running. Encoding load and connection stability matter; OBS’s help page discusses bitrate-related dropped frames. |
| Stream247 | A repository describes a headless relay with a web dashboard, looping a YouTube playlist or video, accepting direct HLS URLs, and sending RTMP/RTMPS to destinations including YouTube Live. It lists resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, encoder, and shuffle controls. See the project repository. | People seeking dashboard controls for a headless relay. | Check project maintenance and maturity, input-source needs, and encoder choices. The repository’s feature claims are not independently tested here. |
The cited FFmpeg and Stream247 repository URLs above are general project links; consult the linked project documentation for its current setup and maintenance details. There is no sourced benchmark, uptime measurement, or verified comparison that establishes one as most reliable or best quality.
What you need for any self-hosted 24/7 stream
- A host that stays available: a computer or hosted server must remain powered on and connected. A community FFmpeg example uses an Ubuntu VPS, but it does not establish minimum CPU, memory, GPU, bandwidth, or hosting cost.
- Enough capacity for the chosen output: if the workflow transcodes, resource needs depend on the source media and output settings. The cited material does not quantify a safe minimum.
- A recovery plan: process restart behavior can recover from some crashes, but does not by itself diagnose every network or configuration problem. Monitor both the host and the YouTube stream.
- Protected credentials: treat the YouTube stream key as a password. Do not place it in a public repository, logs, screenshots, or shared scripts.
Configure YouTube Live before starting the encoder
- Create or select a stream: open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes this workflow.
- Copy the ingest details: provide the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- Start sending the prerecorded feed: configure the chosen tool to send the video to that ingest endpoint, then start the encoder or relay.
- Check preview and status: use the Live Control Room preview and live state to confirm YouTube receives the feed before relying on unattended operation.
- Check stream health when troubleshooting: YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes stream-health states and configuration issues, including unsupported codecs and bitrate or sample-rate problems.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish what happens to streams longer than 12 hours. See the official encoder guidance for the platform’s current details.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
RTMP and HLS are different ingest paths
A typical FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup uses RTMP. YouTube also documents RTMPS and HLS ingestion. Do not apply HLS-specific packaging requirements to an RTMP stream.
For HLS, YouTube’s HLS ingest help page specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. The page also notes higher latency than continuous RTMP because HLS sends video in segments.

How to keep a self-hosted relay running
FFmpeg on a Linux server
The cited community example uses an Ubuntu VPS, local media files, RTMP output, and a systemd service configured to restart the process. Treat it as an example deployment, not a verified universal recipe: its suitability depends on your media, configuration, host, and network.
- Prepare the video and audio files the relay will play, and decide how the playlist should advance or loop.
- Configure FFmpeg to read the media and send it to the YouTube stream URL using the stream key. Keep credentials out of public source control.
- Run the relay under a service manager such as systemd so a process exit can trigger a restart. A restart policy does not replace checking logs, host availability, or YouTube’s stream health.
- Test the feed in Live Control Room, then verify that the service behaves as expected after a controlled restart before depending on it unattended.
The community example does not provide evidence for minimum hardware, bandwidth, or monthly VPS pricing. Do not size a server from assumptions alone; measure the demands of your chosen media and whether you are transcoding.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the feed: verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and stream key from the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the process is running.
- YouTube reports a configuration issue: inspect stream-health information for codec, bitrate, or sample-rate problems, then compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current requirements.
- Video drops or stalls: check host and network availability, encoder load, and the tool’s logs. Restart behavior can restore an exited process but will not fix a persistent network or configuration fault.
- OBS reports dropped frames: consult OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and review the streaming connection and bitrate; dropped frames can be connection-related rather than a problem with the prerecorded file.
- HLS ingest is rejected or delayed: verify HLS-specific segment, playlist, HTTPS, and encryption requirements. HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
- A long stream is not archived as expected: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours only; do not assume it applies beyond that duration.
