VitaShell is the best default dashboard for most hacked PS Vita owners. It replaces the stock LiveArea with a file manager, package installer, FTP server and storage tools. Choose ONEMenu instead when your priority is a categorized game and homebrew library; add Adrenaline for PSP and PS1 software; or consider the newer PSVitaAlive if you want an on-device catalog and installer. These programs serve different jobs, so there is no single winner for every setup.

For a single dependable shell, install VitaShell first. ONEMenu can then be added as a launcher if its categorized interface suits you. Adrenaline is a companion environment, not a substitute for either dashboard. PSVitaAlive is worth testing for its catalog workflow, but treat it as an emerging project rather than a proven replacement for core system tools.
What a dashboard does on a hacked Vita
Sony’s LiveArea is designed for officially installed applications. A homebrew dashboard extends that interface with functions needed to manage files, install packages, connect to a computer and organize software that LiveArea does not understand. The dashboard does not itself provide commercial games or bypass copyright. Use homebrew and personal backups legally, and keep installation files from sources you trust.
The practical distinction is between a system shell, a library launcher and a special-purpose environment:

- System shells expose partitions, file operations, package installation and network transfer. VitaShell is the clearest example.
- Library launchers group bubbles and installed content into categories, with sorting and themes. ONEMenu is designed around this role.
- Special-purpose environments run software for another platform. Adrenaline provides a PSP custom-firmware environment inside the Vita emulator.
- Catalog clients combine browsing, downloading and installation. PSVitaAlive targets this newer workflow.
VitaShell: the best all-purpose choice
Core capabilities
VitaShell is described by its project README as an alternative replacement for the PS Vita’s LiveArea. Its central tools are a file manager, package installer and built-in FTP server, with additional storage and system-management functions. That combination makes it the safest recommendation when you need one application that can recover a setup, copy files from a computer and install a VPK.
- Navigate Vita partitions and copy, move, rename or delete files.
- Install VPK packages directly on the console.
- Transfer files over FTP without removing the memory card.
- Mount supported USB or external storage workflows.
- Use a LiveArea-style entry point for other homebrew utilities.
Who should choose it
Choose VitaShell if you are setting up a newly hacked console, changing storage, installing plugins or troubleshooting a missing application. It is also the practical fallback when another launcher has a database problem: a file manager and FTP server let you inspect the card and restore files without depending on a graphical game-library view.
Where it is less convenient
VitaShell is utilitarian. It does not emphasize a colorful, categorized game shelf, and its file-oriented navigation can feel slower when you have a large collection. If your main task is choosing a game rather than administering files, ONEMenu is a better front end while VitaShell remains installed for maintenance.
ONEMenu: the strongest categorized launcher
Library organization
ONEMenu’s project README describes it as a simple interface that separates installed games and applications into categories. It documents five groups:
- Vita and homebrew games
- PlayStation Mobile (PSM) games
- PSP and homebrew games
- PS1 games
- Adrenaline bubbles
Sorting, themes and bubble/database refresh tools make ONEMenu useful when LiveArea has become crowded. It is especially attractive for a mixed library in which Vita, PSP, PS1 and homebrew entries need to remain visually distinct.

Management and installation tools
ONEMenu also documents VPK and folder installation, FTP and USB transfer, a file explorer and database-refresh functions. That means it can do more than launch software, but it also increases the consequences of an incorrect operation. Before using cleanup, database or partition-related functions, make a backup of saved data and any configuration files you cannot easily recreate.
Project activity
ONEMenu’s repository displayed 234 stars and 24 forks when checked in 2026. Those numbers indicate repository activity, not quality, security, compatibility or a guaranteed maintenance schedule. Check the current release notes and issues before installing a build, particularly on a PSTV or a setup using unusual storage plugins.

Adrenaline: a PSP and PS1 companion, not a native dashboard
What it changes
Adrenaline modifies the official PSP Emulator through the taiHEN custom-firmware framework so it can run PSP firmware 6.61 custom firmware. In practical terms, it creates a PSP-focused environment inside the Vita. PSP and PS1 software launched through that environment benefits from controls and settings intended for the PSP emulator rather than the native Vita shell.
How to use it in a dashboard setup
Install and launch Adrenaline from a native Vita dashboard such as VitaShell or ONEMenu. You can then create or use an Adrenaline bubble for convenient access. ONEMenu explicitly includes an Adrenaline-bubbles category, which makes it the more natural front end for a collection that mixes Vita and PSP software.
What it cannot replace
Adrenaline does not provide a general Vita file manager, package installer or LiveArea replacement. It should not be your only shell: retain VitaShell or another native manager for VPK files, plugins, storage and recovery work.

PSVitaAlive: an emerging catalog-and-installer client
Catalog workflow
PSVitaAlive identifies itself as a native client for PS Vita, PSTV and Vita3K. Its documented catalogs cover homebrew, Vita games, PSP and PS1 content. Search and in-device browsing are intended to reduce the need to move between a computer, a browser and an FTP client whenever you want to find or install software.
Installation pipeline
The project documents downloads and installation for VPK, ZIP and PKG files, along with plugin configuration. That makes PSVitaAlive more than a menu: it combines a catalog with an installer. Verify that the catalog you intend to use is currently reachable and that the release supports your firmware and storage arrangement. A newer client can change behavior faster than an established file manager, so keep a working recovery path through VitaShell.
When it makes sense
Try PSVitaAlive if on-device discovery is more important to you than a mature file-management interface. It is not the first tool to install on a console that has no recovery shell yet; use VitaShell to establish a dependable baseline, then evaluate PSVitaAlive as an additional client.

Check compatibility before installing anything
The correct procedure depends on the Vita model, firmware, storage plugin and whether the device is a handheld Vita or a PlayStation TV. Do not copy instructions from a different model or firmware without checking the current Vita Hacks Guide and the documentation for your storage plugin.

When a guide tells you to transfer a built VPK, VitaShell’s FTP server is the documented route: connect the computer and console on the same network, copy the file to a location with enough free space, then install it from VitaShell. Keep the original VPK until the installation has completed and the application launches successfully.
Storage choices change the dashboard experience
Sony memory cards
A Sony card is the least complicated storage model because it follows the console’s original layout. Capacity and cost can be limiting, but troubleshooting is generally simpler: fewer storage plugins and mount points are involved.
SD2Vita and microSD expansion
The Vita Hacks Guide points readers to YAMT for replacing Sony memory-card storage with alternatives such as a microSD card or USB drive. An SD2Vita adapter can provide substantially more room, but the dashboard depends on correct mounting, partition assignment and plugin configuration. Install or change one storage component at a time, reboot, and confirm that the expected ux0: and uma0: volumes contain the files you expect before deleting anything.
USB storage on PS TV
VitaShell’s README documents a PS TV workflow in which a USB flash drive is mounted as uma0: and then used as ux0:. The procedure is temporary and must be repeated after each PS TV launch. Because it is not persistent across launches, it is best treated as a deliberate storage workflow rather than a replacement for understanding the console’s normal mount order.
A safe installation and migration procedure
- Record the setup. Write down the Vita model, firmware version, current storage device, storage plugin and whether the console is a Vita or PS TV.
- Back up irreplaceable data. Copy saved games, configuration files, plugin settings and any personal backups to a computer. Do not rely on a dashboard database as your only backup.
- Keep a recovery shell. Install and verify VitaShell before replacing the launcher or changing storage. Confirm that it opens after a reboot.
- Transfer one package at a time. Use VitaShell FTP or USB, leave the source file intact, and install only builds intended for your firmware.
- Test before reorganizing. Launch the new dashboard, open several categories, and confirm that VitaShell and your storage partitions remain accessible.
- Add companions gradually. Install ONEMenu, Adrenaline or PSVitaAlive separately. If a problem appears, you can identify the last change instead of debugging several variables at once.
- Refresh databases only when needed. Use ONEMenu’s refresh tools after a legitimate bubble or content change, not as a routine fix for every launch problem.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
The new dashboard does not appear
First reboot and check whether the VPK actually installed. If the bubble is missing, open VitaShell and inspect the installation location and free space. Reinstall the package from a verified copy rather than deleting system folders at random.

Games or bubbles disappeared after changing storage
Stop deleting files. Confirm the mount order and plugin configuration, then check whether the content is still present on the previous card or partition. Restore the known-good storage arrangement before attempting a database refresh.
FTP cannot connect
Ensure the console and computer are on the same network, keep VitaShell open while connecting, and use the address and port shown by VitaShell rather than a remembered value. A USB transfer is a useful fallback when the network blocks local FTP traffic.
ONEMenu shows incorrect categories
Verify that the underlying bubbles or folders are intact in VitaShell. Use the database-refresh function only after the files and mount points are confirmed. A refresh cannot recover content that is on an unmounted or damaged volume.
PSP software does not launch
Open Adrenaline directly from the native dashboard and confirm that its installation completed. Remember that Adrenaline handles PSP-emulator content; a native Vita package belongs in the Vita environment and should be managed with VitaShell or ONEMenu.
A catalog client cannot download or install
Check the current PSVitaAlive release notes, catalog availability and network connection. If the client fails midway, use VitaShell to inspect free space and remove only the incomplete download. Do not assume a catalog entry guarantees compatibility with your firmware or storage plugin.
How mature are these projects?
VitaShell, ONEMenu and Adrenaline are established names in Vita homebrew documentation, while PSVitaAlive is newer. Public repository stars and forks can show that a project has attracted attention, but they are not independent quality measurements. No controlled performance benchmarks, adoption surveys or failure-rate studies establish that one dashboard is faster or more reliable than another. The meaningful comparison is functional: choose the tool whose role matches your workflow and maintain a recovery path.
Recommended setup for most readers
- Use VitaShell as the permanent administrative shell.
- Add ONEMenu if you want categories, themes and a cleaner mixed-library launcher.
- Install Adrenaline only when PSP or PS1 support is part of your goal.
- Evaluate PSVitaAlive for catalog browsing after your base setup is backed up and recoverable.
This layered approach avoids forcing one application to perform incompatible jobs. It also means a library interface can be replaced without losing the file manager needed to repair it.
