LangGraph is the best open-source alternative when you need durable, stateful agent workflows with approvals and recovery. Open Deep Research is the closest fit for a Perplexity-style research agent. Deep Agents is the strongest ready-made general harness, while LangChain is the flexible foundation for building your own.

None of these projects is a drop-in replacement for SPACE’s isolation layer. SPACE creates Firecracker microVMs with writable filesystems, command sessions, network and credential controls, and lifecycle APIs. The most secure design combines an orchestration framework such as LangGraph or Deep Agents with SPACE, or another sandbox, for untrusted code and file operations.

What Perplexity SPACE does

SPACE is an execution and isolation layer for agent runtimes, not an agent-planning framework. Its documentation describes Linux environments created through an HTTP API, with commands executed inside isolated Firecracker microVMs. A template supplies the starting environment; each sandbox receives its own virtual machine and writable filesystem, and multiple commands can run in the same sandbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Execution and isolation

The separation matters because an agent that can write files, install packages, run scripts, or call operating-system commands needs a boundary around those actions. SPACE is designed to keep that work out of the host system. Its interfaces expose sandbox creation, command execution, output collection, and lifecycle management over HTTP and server-sent events.

State and lifecycle controls

SPACE supports asynchronous lifecycle operations, including pausing, suspending, snapshots, resuming, and recovery. In Perplexity’s Computer product, those controls enable isolated execution, conversation branching, and continuation after an interruption. The repository identifies the project as “Sandboxed Platform for Agentic Code Execution” and states that it uses the Apache License 2.0.

What the published security figures mean

Perplexity says SPACE has handled millions of sandbox creations per day since July 2026. It also reports that internal testing found no virtual-machine host escape in 108 attempts after fixes, while network-control bypasses were found and remediated. These are vendor-reported figures, not independent comparisons with other runtimes, so treat them as evidence of the project’s own testing rather than a universal security benchmark.

Best alternatives by use case

LangGraph Durable workflow runtime Explicit state machines, checkpoints, retries, approvals, and coordinated multi-agent processes A VM sandbox, browser, or code-execution service
LangChain Agent-building framework Teams assembling a custom tool-using agent with models, middleware, guardrails, and business logic Isolation and durable orchestration unless you add them
Deep Agents Higher-level general-agent harness Production-oriented defaults such as context management, subagents, skills, memory, and execution environments A complete Perplexity-style research product or guaranteed host isolation
Open Deep Research Configurable research-agent implementation Research and report-writing workflows with replaceable models, search tools, and MCP servers Its own sandbox boundary; code execution and browser access depend on configured tools

LangGraph: best for durable, explicit workflows

Choose LangGraph when your agent is better represented as a graph of states and controlled transitions than as an unconstrained chat loop. LangChain’s open-source overview describes it as a runtime for custom agent workflows with durable execution, human-in-the-loop control, fault tolerance, streaming, persistence, observability, custom approvals, interrupts, retries, and explicit multi-agent coordination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it is the closest architectural substitute

A Perplexity-style system usually needs to plan research, call several tools, pause for approval, recover from a failed request, and produce a final report. LangGraph gives you the workflow layer for those transitions. You can model planning, searching, extraction, verification, drafting, and review as separate nodes, then persist state at checkpoints.

Memory and recovery

LangGraph’s persistence is workflow state, not an automatic long-term personal-memory database. You decide what to store, when to checkpoint it, and how to reload it. Interrupts and retries let a run stop before a sensitive action or resume after a transient failure. That explicitness is valuable when an agent must be auditable.

Approvals and governance

Human-in-the-loop controls are a documented LangGraph capability. Add an approval node before sending messages, changing records, executing code, or spending money. The approval can inspect the proposed tool call and either continue, reject it, or route it back for clarification.

Where LangGraph needs another layer

LangGraph orchestrates calls; it does not create Firecracker microVMs. If a node runs shell commands, manipulates files, or handles untrusted input, connect it to SPACE or another isolated execution service. Browser automation likewise comes from a browser tool or remote browser, not from the graph runtime itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LangChain: best for assembling a custom harness

LangChain is the lower-level option. Its open-source overview describes abstractions for models, tools, messages, MCP, and middleware, plus the core agent loop. It suits a team that wants to add its own guardrails, human review, dynamic context, and application-specific business logic around a standard tool-using agent.

Use LangChain when you want control

Start with LangChain if your requirements are still changing or you need to integrate unusual model providers and tools. Middleware can enforce policies, inject context, transform messages, or route requests. MCP support gives you a standard way to connect external capabilities, provided each MCP server is configured and secured for your environment.

What you must supply

LangChain alone does not provide the complete durability and isolation story. Add a persistence strategy if runs must survive process restarts, an approval mechanism for high-impact tools, and a sandbox for code and file operations. A browser is another tool integration, with its own authentication, network, and data-handling risks.

Deep Agents: best ready-made general-agent harness

Deep Agents is the higher-level choice for teams that want useful defaults before customizing lower-level components. The LangChain overview characterizes it as a production-ready harness with context management, subagents, long-term memory, skills, and execution environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When its defaults help

Long research sessions can exceed a model’s context window. Context management can organize intermediate work, while subagents can divide a task into focused investigations. Skills provide reusable procedures, and long-term memory can preserve information across sessions when you configure the storage and retention policy.

Execution environments are not automatically host isolation

Deep Agents includes execution-environment concepts, but the published description does not establish that it provides the same Firecracker microVM boundary as SPACE. Verify how an environment is isolated before allowing arbitrary code or untrusted files. For a strong boundary, route execution to SPACE or another sandbox and let Deep Agents handle planning and delegation.

Open Deep Research: best for Perplexity-style research

Open Deep Research is the most direct starting point for a research assistant that gathers sources and writes a report. A LangChain article published July 16, 2025 describes it as an open, configurable implementation built on LangGraph. You can bring your own models, search tools, and MCP servers.

How the research workflow is organized

The architecture separates scope, research, and writing. A supervisor delegates research tasks to sub-agents, allowing different questions or source types to be investigated in parallel before the writing stage assembles the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search and browser capabilities

Open Deep Research does not lock you to one search provider. You supply search tools and can connect MCP servers. Browser retrieval, page interaction, authentication, and rate-limit handling therefore depend on the tools you choose and the controls around them. Do not assume that installing the project grants unrestricted browser access.

Code execution and files

The research pattern can call tools that process documents or run analysis, but the implementation itself should not be treated as a host sandbox. Put risky processing in SPACE or another isolated runtime, then return sanitized outputs to the research graph.

Capability comparison

Choose Deep Agents for a general assistant with useful defaults

Deep Agents is appropriate when you want context management, subagents, skills, memory, and execution-environment concepts without assembling every layer yourself. Confirm the isolation model before enabling dangerous tools.

Choose LangChain for a custom platform

LangChain is the right starting point when you need a bespoke harness, unusual middleware, or direct control over the agent loop. Expect to add persistence, approvals, observability, and sandboxing as separate concerns.

Choose SPACE as the execution layer, not the planner

If your primary concern is safely running generated code, manipulating files, or preserving a Linux workspace across commands, SPACE addresses that concern directly. Pair it with one of the orchestration projects instead of asking it to provide planning, memory, or research quality.

Recommended architecture for a secure Perplexity-like agent

A layered design keeps responsibilities clear: the workflow framework decides what should happen, the research pattern organizes information gathering, and the sandbox contains risky operations.

  1. Define the workflow. Model planning, tool selection, approval points, execution, verification, and writing as explicit states in LangGraph, or use Deep Agents if its higher-level harness matches your needs.
  2. Add research delegation. Reuse the Open Deep Research pattern for scope definition, parallel sub-agent investigations, source collection, and final synthesis. Configure the models and search or MCP tools that fit your data and latency requirements.
  3. Classify every tool. Mark tools as read-only, write-capable, networked, credentialed, or code-executing. The classification determines whether the call needs approval and whether it must run inside a sandbox.
  4. Route risky work to isolation. Send shell commands, package installation, document conversion, and untrusted file handling to SPACE or another isolated runtime. Keep credentials and network permissions scoped to the individual task.
  5. Persist recoverable state. Save the plan, tool inputs, outputs, approval decisions, and final artifacts at checkpoints. Do not rely on a temporary process or an agent’s conversational context as the only record.
  6. Require approval before impact. Pause the graph before external writes, authenticated actions, destructive commands, or publication. Present the exact proposed action and its relevant output to the reviewer.
  7. Return bounded results. Pass sanitized, size-limited outputs from the sandbox back to the agent. Store large files in controlled storage and give the model references or summaries instead of unrestricted host access.
  8. Instrument failures. Record model calls, tool latency, sandbox lifecycle events, retries, and approval outcomes. This makes it possible to distinguish a planning error from a search outage or an execution failure.

Using SPACE with an agent framework

Sandbox templates

Prepare a template containing the operating-system packages and helper scripts required by your tasks. Because each sandbox starts from a template and has a writable filesystem, you can keep a clean baseline while allowing changes during one run.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Command sessions

Use one sandbox for related commands when later steps depend on files created earlier. The documented behavior allows multiple commands in the same environment, which is useful for downloading data, transforming it, testing the result, and collecting artifacts without exposing the host filesystem.

Asynchronous APIs and events

Design the orchestrator around asynchronous lifecycle operations rather than assuming a command completes immediately. HTTP requests create and control environments; server-sent events can stream progress and output to the supervising workflow.

Pause, resume, and recovery

Persist the sandbox identifier and the agent’s workflow checkpoint together. If a run pauses or the supervising process restarts, the graph can recover the correct environment instead of creating a duplicate and losing intermediate files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local deployment

The repository documents local deployment with Kind. Treat that as a development and evaluation path; confirm the current repository instructions, Kubernetes resources, storage behavior, and network policies before using it for production.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling a workflow framework a sandbox. LangGraph and LangChain coordinate actions but do not create the Firecracker boundary documented for SPACE. Put untrusted execution behind a dedicated isolation layer.
  • Assuming “memory” means durable files. A sandbox filesystem, graph checkpoint, and long-term user-memory store solve different problems. Define retention, ownership, and deletion for each.
  • Giving the researcher unrestricted network access. Search and browser tools can expose credentials or sensitive prompts. Use allowlists, scoped credentials, and approval gates for authenticated or write-capable operations.
  • Skipping recovery tests. Simulate model timeouts, tool failures, approval rejection, sandbox suspension, and process restarts. Verify that the run resumes at the intended checkpoint and does not repeat an irreversible action.
  • Trusting vendor security figures as comparative proof. SPACE’s published escape and throughput numbers come from Perplexity’s own testing. They do not establish that it is safer, faster, or cheaper than every alternative in your workload.
  • Measuring only answer quality. A useful evaluation also measures startup latency, tool reliability, model and infrastructure cost, isolation strength, observability, and failure recovery.

Licensing, deployment, and evaluation notes

SPACE’s repository states an Apache License 2.0 license and documents HTTP and server-sent-events interfaces plus local Kind deployment. Check the current license, dependencies, model terms, and deployment requirements of LangGraph, LangChain, Deep Agents, Open Deep Research, and every MCP or search server before production use.

No independent apples-to-apples benchmark establishes comparative cost, latency, research quality, or operational effort for these projects. Build a workload-specific test that uses your models, tools, document sizes, concurrency, network policy, and approval process. Record cold-start and warm-start times, failed-call rates, recovery success, sandbox escape attempts, token usage, and the percentage of reports that pass human review.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do you need a real VM boundary for generated code and files? Use SPACE or another sandbox.
  • Do you need checkpoints, interrupts, retries, and explicit approvals? Start with LangGraph.
  • Do you need a configurable research-and-writing pipeline? Start with Open Deep Research.
  • Do you want long-term memory, skills, subagents, and context handling out of the box? Evaluate Deep Agents.
  • Do you need to build the agent loop and middleware yourself? Use LangChain.
  • Will a browser or search provider handle private data? Review its network and credential controls separately.
  • Can the system resume without repeating an external side effect? Test that failure path before launch.
