For hostile, multi-tenant execution of AI-generated code, start with a Firecracker- or Kata Containers-based microVM boundary. Choose gVisor when you need a container-like workflow and documented CUDA support on NVIDIA GPUs. Use NSJail only when a shared host kernel is acceptable and the workload is tightly constrained. On Kubernetes, Agent Sandbox can standardize lifecycle and scheduling while you select gVisor or Kata as the isolation backend.
These options are not interchangeable “sandboxes.” They expose different trust paths: ordinary Linux isolation, a userspace application kernel, or a separate guest kernel inside a virtual machine. The right open-source alternative depends on what the generated code may attack, whether several tenants share a host, how much container compatibility you need, and whether GPU access is mandatory.
What to compare when replacing nFox
A sandbox for LLM-generated code must protect the host, other tenants, credentials, model files and data. Start by writing down the attacker you expect: code that is merely buggy, code deliberately trying to escape, or mutually hostile customers sharing one cluster. Then identify the assets that must remain inaccessible, such as the host filesystem, cloud credentials, container runtime sockets, Kubernetes service-account tokens, model weights and other tenants’ processes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The decisive question is where the security boundary sits. A process jailed with Linux namespaces still uses the host kernel. A userspace kernel such as gVisor intercepts many system calls before they reach Linux, adding defense in depth but retaining the host kernel in the trust path. Kata Containers and Firecracker put the workload behind a guest kernel in a virtual machine, which removes direct dependence on the host kernel’s system-call surface but adds virtual-machine operations.

| Option | Boundary | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| gVisor | Userspace application kernel plus host-kernel defense in depth | Containerized code execution needing broad compatibility and a documented CUDA path | The host kernel remains in the trust path; compatibility and performance require workload testing |
| Kata Containers | VM-backed guest kernel behind OCI and Kubernetes interfaces | Stronger multi-tenant isolation with Kubernetes integration | More VM lifecycle and hardware-virtualization operations |
| Firecracker-based stack | Minimal microVM guest kernel and virtual-machine monitor | Hostile, short-lived code execution where kernel separation is primary | Operators must engineer images, networking, scheduling and host operations |
| NSJail | Linux namespaces, resource limits and seccomp-bpf | Lower-risk or tightly controlled workloads | Shared host kernel; weaker boundary for arbitrary hostile code |
| Kubernetes Agent Sandbox | Orchestration abstraction over a selected backend | Standardized lifecycle and scheduling on Kubernetes | Security depends on the chosen backend and its configuration |
There is no defensible, cross-project performance winner in the available evidence. Startup time, memory use, throughput, filesystem behavior, network latency and GPU performance vary with the model, language runtime, image, storage and hardware. Benchmark the exact workload you intend to permit.
gVisor: the practical container-compatible middle ground
How its boundary works
gVisor is an open-source Linux-compatible sandbox designed to run where existing container tooling runs. Instead of allowing the workload’s system calls to reach the host kernel directly, each sandbox uses a userspace application kernel called Sentry. A successful escape would need to defeat both Sentry and the host Linux kernel, rather than exploiting only the host kernel’s container-facing interface.
This is meaningful hardening for services that accept user-uploaded programs, execute LLM-generated code or run third-party packages. OCI-style images and familiar container workflows reduce the migration step from ordinary containers, although “Linux-compatible” does not mean every application behaves identically. System-call coverage, filesystem assumptions, networking, tracing and language runtimes still need testing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When gVisor is the right choice
- You already operate containers and want a smaller operational change than introducing a VM for every job.
- Your code-execution service needs a userspace kernel boundary but can accept the host kernel remaining part of the trusted computing base.
- NVIDIA GPU access is required and your workload fits gVisor’s documented CUDA path.
- You want to run the same sandbox model across ordinary container infrastructure and Kubernetes.
Where gVisor is not enough
gVisor is not a separate guest kernel. The host Linux kernel remains in the trust path, so it does not satisfy a threat model that requires the workload to be isolated from the host kernel itself. Treat it as defense in depth, not as a universal guarantee against every kernel or device attack. Test the exact system calls, device access, filesystem operations and GPU libraries used by generated programs.
Kata Containers: a guest kernel behind Kubernetes and OCI interfaces
Architecture and isolation
Kata Containers runs each sandbox as a pod backed by a real KVM virtual machine with its own kernel. The workload still appears through familiar OCI and Kubernetes interfaces, but the process is placed inside a guest operating system rather than directly in the node’s kernel namespace.

A Firecracker-backed Kata configuration adds a jailer, chroot, dropped capabilities, a restrictive seccomp filter and an unprivileged user ID. Those controls reduce the privileges of the virtual-machine monitor and its management process while preserving the guest-kernel boundary.
Why teams choose Kata
- It offers stronger isolation for mutually untrusted tenants than a shared-kernel container.
- Kubernetes scheduling and pod-oriented operations remain available.
- It can be selected as a backend under a Kubernetes sandbox abstraction.
- The guest kernel creates a clearer separation between host maintenance and workload system calls.
Operational costs
Every VM-backed sandbox introduces image management, guest-kernel patching, virtual networking, capacity planning and hardware-virtualization requirements. Operators must account for VM startup and teardown, node support for KVM, guest images that contain the needed language runtimes, and the observability differences between a normal container and a guest operating system. These costs are justified when the threat model demands a guest-kernel boundary, but they should be planned rather than hidden.

What Firecracker changes
Firecracker provides a minimal microVM with its own guest kernel and a small virtual-machine monitor. In a sandbox service, each execution can receive a purpose-built image, constrained virtual devices and a short lifetime. The guest kernel is the primary isolation boundary; the host does not expose its normal process system-call surface directly to generated code.
This design is well suited to untrusted snippets, agent tool calls, build steps and other jobs that should be destroyed after execution. A Firecracker-based stack can also be used as the VM engine for a higher-level platform, including a Kata configuration.
Engineering you must own
Firecracker is not a complete multi-tenant platform. You must design image distribution and patching, VM scheduling, virtual networking, storage attachment, logging, cancellation and capacity limits. Host KVM availability and secure monitor configuration are prerequisites. The service should create narrowly scoped credentials, avoid mounting host paths, and destroy the VM and its temporary storage after the job.

The extra engineering is the trade-off for a guest-kernel boundary. If your organization cannot operate VM images, kernels and networking safely, a well-configured gVisor deployment may be safer in practice than an incomplete microVM system.
NSJail: lightweight isolation when the host kernel is trusted
NSJail combines Linux namespaces, resource limits and seccomp-bpf filters to constrain a process. It is lightweight and useful for controlled jobs where the application can tolerate a shared host kernel. Typical controls include separate process, mount, network and user namespaces; CPU, memory and file-size limits; and a syscall allowlist.
NSJail is not equivalent to a guest kernel or a microVM. A vulnerability in the host kernel, a permitted device interface or an overly broad syscall policy remains relevant to every jail. That makes it a poor default for arbitrary hostile code in a service where unrelated customers share a node. It is more appropriate for lower-risk transformations, single-tenant workers or code that has already passed strict review.
Kubernetes Agent Sandbox: a common control plane
Kubernetes Agent Sandbox is a Kubernetes-native abstraction for short-lived sandboxes that execute untrusted code. Its documented backends include gVisor and Kata Containers. Instead of hard-coding one runtime into every application, a platform team can standardize sandbox creation, scheduling, expiration and status while choosing the isolation implementation that matches each workload.
What the abstraction does and does not provide
- It can give teams a consistent Kubernetes object and lifecycle for ephemeral execution.
- It can make backend selection a platform decision rather than an application rewrite.
- It does not strengthen a backend by itself; the selected runtime, kernel, device policy and cluster configuration determine the actual boundary.
- A gVisor-backed sandbox still has gVisor’s host-kernel trust path, while a Kata-backed sandbox still has VM-image and hardware-virtualization responsibilities.
Use the abstraction when many teams need the same operational workflow, but document which backend each namespace or workload uses. Do not describe every Agent Sandbox instance as having identical security.

NVIDIA Confidential Containers for model and data protection
NVIDIA’s Confidential Containers reference architecture combines Kata Containers with Kubernetes integration for zero-trust cloud-native deployments. It is relevant when the sandbox must protect not only the host from model-generated code, but also model weights, prompts and enterprise data from untrusted infrastructure.
This is a broader confidentiality objective than ordinary code execution. It requires reviewing the complete path: guest kernel, virtual devices, GPU access, attestation or confidential-computing features where applicable, image provenance, key release and data handling. A sandbox boundary alone does not prove that model data is confidential; the deployment must enforce those controls end to end.
GPU access: what changes when CUDA is required
GPU support narrows the practical choices because devices add a large interface to the trust model. gVisor’s project documentation states that applications can use CUDA on NVIDIA GPUs, making it the clearest documented option when container compatibility and GPU execution are both priorities.
With Kata or Firecracker, GPU access must be validated for the exact hardware, guest kernel, drivers, device model and orchestration path. Passing a GPU into a guest can change the isolation assumptions and may require specialized device mediation. Do not infer support from CPU-only tests, and do not treat a working device mount as proof that all host, memory and firmware attack paths are closed.

A decision guide by threat model
Hostile multi-tenant code
Use a Firecracker- or Kata-based guest-kernel boundary as the starting point. Apply minimal images, short lifetimes, strict network egress, per-job credentials and aggressive cleanup. A gVisor deployment may be a transitional choice when VM operations are not ready, but document that the host kernel remains trusted.

Containerized execution with NVIDIA CUDA
Evaluate gVisor first because its project documentation describes a CUDA path and its process model is close to ordinary containers. Move to Kata or a Firecracker design if the threat model requires guest-kernel separation and your GPU stack works correctly there.
Controlled, single-tenant or pre-reviewed jobs
NSJail can be sufficient when the host kernel is inside the trusted boundary, the syscall and resource policy is narrow, and tenants cannot attack one another. Keep the scope explicit; do not silently reuse this profile for arbitrary public submissions.
Kubernetes platform serving multiple teams
Use Kubernetes Agent Sandbox to standardize lifecycle and scheduling, then assign gVisor or Kata backends according to namespace, data sensitivity and hardware needs. Record the backend and its security assumptions in the platform contract.
Safe deployment checklist
- Classify the workload. Separate trusted internal code, reviewed customer code and arbitrary LLM-generated or user-uploaded code.
- Choose a boundary that matches the classification. Shared-kernel isolation is not a substitute for a guest kernel when escape resistance is the requirement.
- Build minimal, reproducible images. Include only the interpreter, libraries and model assets required for the job. Pin versions and patch guest or host kernels on a defined schedule.
- Remove ambient authority. Do not expose container-runtime sockets, cloud instance metadata, Kubernetes credentials, host filesystems or broad Linux capabilities.
- Constrain resources. Set CPU, memory, process-count, disk, execution-time and GPU limits, and make cancellation enforceable by the control plane.
- Control networking. Default to no network access when possible. If downloads or APIs are required, use an allowlist, separate credentials and egress logging.
- Isolate storage and secrets. Use per-job temporary storage, encrypt sensitive data, and ensure teardown removes credentials, caches and generated artifacts that should not persist.
- Instrument the boundary. Collect sandbox lifecycle events, denied syscalls, resource exhaustion, network attempts and termination reasons without placing sensitive prompts or model data in broad logs.
- Test escape and recovery scenarios. Exercise malformed images, fork bombs, filesystem traversal, credential probing, denial of service, kernel-facing calls, GPU errors and abrupt node failure.
- Reassess after every capability change. Adding a device, filesystem mount, syscall, network route or privileged helper can change the threat model.
Compatibility, cost and performance expectations
gVisor generally minimizes the operational shift from containers, but applications that depend on unusual system calls, kernel modules or low-level device behavior may need changes. Kata and Firecracker provide a stronger boundary but require VM images, guest-kernel maintenance, KVM-capable hosts and more elaborate networking and scheduling. NSJail is the lightest operational option, at the cost of retaining the host kernel as the boundary.
Do not choose on an assumed startup or throughput ranking. The available material contains no apples-to-apples measurements across nFox, gVisor, Kata Containers, Firecracker and NSJail. Measure cold and warm startup, steady-state throughput, memory overhead, filesystem performance, network latency, GPU utilization and cleanup time with your actual model and code mix.
What is—and is not—established about nFox
No authoritative architecture, version, supported-language list or benchmark for nFox is established here. That prevents a feature-by-feature claim about compatibility or performance. The comparison above is therefore a boundary-and-integration decision, not a statement that one runtime has a measured advantage over nFox.
If you are migrating, first inventory the nFox behaviors your service relies on: image format, process model, filesystem semantics, network policy, GPU handling, timeout controls and observability. Recreate those tests against the candidate backend, then run adversarial tests before moving hostile workloads or multiple tenants onto the new platform.
