For most people listening at a quiet desk, the Sennheiser HD 560S is the best starting point. It combines a generally flat tonal balance, a spacious presentation for game positioning, and a comfortable fit for long sessions. Choose the Sennheiser HD 600 when vocal and acoustic accuracy matters most, the Philips SHP9600/00 for an inexpensive and comfortable home-listening set, the Sennheiser HD 550 when you find its newer desktop tuning at a good sale price, or the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa for lightweight neutral reference listening with a powerful enough source.

Every recommendation here is wired and open-back. That design can make games and music feel wide and natural, but it also lets sound out and room noise in. These are quiet-room headphones, not travel or shared-office headphones.

Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa Lightweight neutral reference work 199 g, neutral tuning and a 45 mm driver 470-ohm impedance demands a capable source

Prices and stock change by country and date, so check the specification and retailer listing for your region before ordering. A low price does not compensate for a poor room match: if people around you can hear your playback or you can hear fans, traffic and conversation, a closed-back model is more appropriate.

What open-back headphones are—and why the design matters

On an open-back headphone, the rear of each earcup is vented rather than sealed. A grille or mesh protects the driver while allowing air and sound to move through it. PC Gamer describes the intended result as a “wide and airy soundstage.” In practice, instruments and game effects can feel less trapped inside your head than they often do with sealed cups.

The same opening creates two unavoidable trade-offs:

  • Sound leakage: music, game audio and voice chat escape into the room. Anyone nearby may hear it, especially at a high listening level.
  • Low isolation: outside sound enters almost freely. A keyboard, air conditioner, television or conversation can compete with quiet details.

SoundGuys therefore positions open-back headphones for quiet rooms rather than noisy travel or shared spaces. They are particularly suitable for a private desk, home studio, bedroom or living room when you are not trying to keep your playback private.

How to choose for your main use

Gaming: prioritize positional clarity and comfort

For competitive games, a spacious presentation can make left-right and front-back cues easier to interpret. A generally even tonal balance also prevents bass or treble from masking footsteps and reload sounds. The HD 560S is the safest all-round choice in this group because it combines that spacious presentation with a generally flat profile and a fit intended for extended wear.

Open-back headphones do not include a microphone in the models covered here. Plan to use a USB, boom, webcam or controller microphone separately. In a single-player game, the lack of isolation can make the room part of the experience; in a team match, make sure your microphone does not pick up the leakage and create an echo for teammates.

Music: decide whether accuracy or warmth comes first

For vocals, acoustic recordings and mixing-style listening, a neutral response is usually the most useful starting point. The HD 600 is the specialist choice: its presentation is described as flat and accurate for instruments and vocals. Its bass is restrained, so listeners who want a strong sub-bass lift may prefer a different tuning, even if they value its midrange precision.

The HD 560S is less narrowly focused. It remains a practical music headphone while adding an expansive quality that works well for orchestral recordings, live albums and games. The Philips SHP9600/00 is the value-oriented option for relaxed home listening, provided you can accept leakage and do not need a sealed, bass-heavy presentation.

Home listening: fit and room conditions decide the winner

Long sessions expose clamp pressure, pad heat and headband fatigue more quickly than a short audition. The HD 560S is reported as comfortable for extended wear. The ATH-R70xa is the lightest named option at 199 g and is described as comfortable, which makes it attractive for several-hour reference sessions. The HD 600 can be excellent for dedicated listening, but its clamp may feel tight on larger heads.

Comfort is personal. Head shape, glasses, hair and the position of the ear inside the pad all change the result. If you cannot return a headphone, prioritize a retailer with a clear return policy, because specifications cannot predict your individual fit.

Sennheiser HD 560S: the best general recommendation

The HD 560S is the strongest default for a quiet desk shared between gaming and music. Its generally flat profile gives dialogue, instruments and effects a predictable balance, while its spacious presentation helps game positioning. The fit is reported as comfortable for long wear, an important advantage when one headphone covers work, games and evening listening.

Where it works best

  • Competitive and single-player gaming where positional information matters.
  • General music listening when you want an even, monitor-like balance.
  • Long sessions at a private desk or in another quiet room.

What to watch for

The HD 560S has limited low bass. Explosions and electronic music can sound cleaner and less swollen than on a bass-emphasized closed-back model, but listeners seeking physical sub-bass may find it restrained. It also leaks sound in both directions, so keep the volume moderate around other people and avoid noisy rooms.

Sennheiser HD 600: the accuracy specialist

The HD 600 is an over-ear open-back headphone aimed at dedicated listening. Its principal strength is a flat, accurate rendering of vocals and instruments. That makes it a compelling choice for singer-songwriter recordings, acoustic music, classical sections and any library where midrange truth matters more than cinematic impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengths

  • Accurate instruments and vocals for critical listening.
  • A focused option when your priority is tonal fidelity rather than an all-purpose gaming feature set.
  • Open-back spaciousness without relying on a deliberately exaggerated effect.

Trade-offs

Bass is restrained compared with headphones designed for a fuller or warmer presentation. The clamp can also feel tight on larger heads. That pressure may ease with use for some people, but fit remains individual; do not assume the HD 600 will suit every head simply because its earcups are over-ear.

Philips SHP9600/00: the budget home-listening option

Philips specifies 50 mm neodymium drivers, an open-back construction, breathable cushions, a removable 3 m cable and a 6.3-to-3.5 mm adapter for the SHP9600/00. The long cable is convenient at a television or desktop, while the adapter lets the same cable connect to common laptop, phone and amplifier outputs.

Its intended audience is home listening: the product description positions these over-ear open-back headphones as a way to improve listening at home. That makes the SHP9600/00 a sensible low-cost entry point when comfort and connection flexibility matter more than a compact travel design.

Check before buying

  • The 3 m lead can be excessive at a small desk and may need to be routed or coiled safely.
  • The open cups do not block a television, household conversation or computer fan.
  • Confirm that your device accepts the included connector or use the supplied adapter; do not mistake a 6.3 mm plug for a portable-friendly connector without checking.

Sennheiser HD 550: a newer desktop alternative

The HD 550 is a wired, mid-to-high-impedance desktop headphone described by PC Gamer as suitable for both gaming and music. The review measured its weight at 237 g. It has no built-in microphone, so gaming chat still requires a separate input.

This model makes sense when you want a newer desktop-oriented option and find it discounted. Its value is particularly price-sensitive: at a strong sale price it can be an attractive one-headphone solution, while at a higher price the established HD 560S may be the more straightforward recommendation for a mixed library.

Desktop requirements

Mid-to-high impedance means the output device matters more than it would with an easy-to-drive portable headset. A modern desktop motherboard, monitor output or dedicated interface may be sufficient, but weak laptop or controller outputs can leave less volume headroom. If you must use a small device, check that it reaches your preferred level without audible distortion before committing.

Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa: lightweight neutral reference listening

The ATH-R70xa is the specialist choice when low weight and neutral sound are more important than plug-and-play convenience. MusicRadar lists a 45 mm driver, a 5 Hz–40 kHz frequency response, 97 dB sensitivity, 470-ohm impedance, 199 g weight, a 3 m detachable cable and a 1/4-inch adapter. Those figures are the specifications reported for this model in 2025.

MusicRadar’s verdict calls it “super light, quite neutral sounding and one of the more comfortable over-ear open-back designs we’ve tried.” At 199 g, it is substantially lighter on paper than the HD 550’s 237 g review weight, which can reduce fatigue during long reference sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 470-ohm decision

Impedance is the critical qualification. The ATH-R70xa is not the safest blind purchase for a phone, game controller or low-powered laptop jack. A capable headphone amplifier, audio interface or other output designed for high-impedance loads may be needed to achieve useful volume and dynamics. Check your source’s headphone specifications rather than assuming that a 3.5 mm adapter creates extra power; an adapter changes the plug format, not the amplifier’s output.

HD 560S vs. HD 600

Decision factor HD 560S HD 600
Primary role Gaming and music crossover Dedicated music listening
Tonal description Generally flat; low bass is limited Flat and accurate for instruments and vocals; bass is restrained
Spatial use Spacious presentation useful for game positioning Open-back spaciousness with an accuracy-first focus
Long-session note Reported comfortable for extended wear Clamp can feel tight on larger heads
Best choice when One headphone must cover games, music and long sessions Vocal and acoustic fidelity outranks gaming versatility

Choose the HD 560S if your library includes games every day or if you want the least specialized recommendation. Choose the HD 600 if your main activity is sitting down to hear the recording itself and you are comfortable with its tighter fit and restrained bass.

Do you need an amplifier?

There is no universal “open-back amplifier” requirement. Amplification depends on impedance, sensitivity and the output stage in your device. The ATH-R70xa’s 470 ohms makes source capability a central purchase question. The HD 550 is described as mid-to-high impedance, so it also deserves a source check. For the other models, start by testing the headphone from your intended device at a normal listening level.

A practical source check

  1. Connect the headphone directly to the device you plan to use most.
  2. Play a familiar recording and raise the level only as high as you would normally listen.
  3. Check for adequate volume, clean peaks and usable adjustment range. If the volume is nearly maxed or sounds strained, the output may lack headroom.
  4. Try a desktop audio interface or headphone amplifier if available, then compare at the same perceived loudness. Louder can sound “better” even when it is not.
  5. Keep the amplifier’s output within the headphone maker’s recommended operating range and avoid unsafe listening levels.

A 6.3-to-3.5 mm adapter, such as the one specified with the SHP9600/00, solves connector compatibility only. It does not guarantee that a phone, controller or laptop can drive a high-impedance headphone properly.

Managing leakage, microphones and room noise

When leakage is acceptable

Open-back headphones are a good fit when you are alone or when low-volume leakage will not disturb anyone. They can also help you remain aware of a doorbell or someone speaking to you. This is a comfort and awareness benefit, not noise cancellation.

When to choose closed-back instead

  • You share an office, library, dorm room or living room and need privacy.
  • You play near a television, loud computer fan, traffic or other continuous noise.
  • You travel or commute and need isolation.
  • Your microphone is close to the earcups and teammates report hearing your game audio.

In those situations, a closed-back headphone is the technically correct category even if an open-back model has a wider presentation.

Using a separate gaming microphone

None of the five models in this guide includes a built-in microphone. A USB microphone, boom microphone, webcam microphone or controller microphone can provide chat input. Position it so the rearward leakage from the earcups is not aimed directly at the capsule, and use software echo cancellation when your chat application offers it.

Comfort and fit checklist for long listening

  • Weight: the ATH-R70xa is listed at 199 g; the HD 550 review weight is 237 g. Lower weight can help, but pad shape and clamp still matter.
  • Clamp: the HD 600 may feel tight on larger heads. Do not force a fit that causes pain or pressure points.
  • Breathability: open pads generally allow more airflow than sealed cups; the SHP9600/00 is specifically described with breathable cushions.
  • Cable reach: the SHP9600/00 and ATH-R70xa are listed with 3 m cables. Measure your desk or seating position so the lead will not snag.
  • Eyeglasses: glasses frames can break the pad seal and create pressure. Test with the glasses you actually wear.

Buying and setup checklist

  1. Confirm that your room is quiet enough for an open design and that leakage will not disturb anyone.
  2. Choose the priority: HD 560S for balance, HD 600 for vocal and instrument accuracy, SHP9600/00 for budget home use, HD 550 for a discounted newer desktop model, or ATH-R70xa for lightweight neutral reference work.
  3. Check impedance and output capability, especially for the ATH-R70xa and HD 550.
  4. Verify the connector, cable length and whether a microphone is required. The SHP9600/00 includes a 3 m removable cable and 6.3-to-3.5 mm adapter; the ATH-R70xa includes a 3 m detachable cable and 1/4-inch adapter.
  5. Confirm return terms and current regional stock. Prices and availability are not fixed and should be checked on the day you buy.
  6. Start at a moderate volume, position the earcups evenly and take breaks during long sessions.

Bottom line

The Sennheiser HD 560S is the most useful first choice for a quiet desk because it balances gaming positional information, music versatility and long-session comfort. Move to the HD 600 for accuracy-led vocal and acoustic listening, the Philips SHP9600/00 for a lower-cost home setup, the Sennheiser HD 550 when a sale makes its newer desktop design compelling, or the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa when you want very low weight and have a source that can handle 470 ohms.
