The right online teleprompter for live streaming depends on how you capture video and where you need the script: a small floating window works well for many solo OBS setups, while speech-following, phone control, or a display beside the lens may call for a different tool. These recommendations are based on vendors’ documented features, not controlled head-to-head testing. For OBS, check your capture source before going live: capturing a specific window or game can keep a floating prompt out of the stream, while capturing the whole display can show it.

How to keep the prompt out of your OBS stream
A teleprompter can be invisible to viewers only if your capture setup does not include it. The exact source matters more than the prompt’s claim that it “floats.”
- Choose the source you actually need. In OBS, use a camera source for the camera feed, or a selected-window/game capture source for the application you want viewers to see. ScriptCue and Cuefyr say these approaches keep their separate prompt window out of the capture. [c002] [c005]
- Avoid whole-display capture when the prompt is on that display. Display capture can expose the prompt and any private notes on screen. If you must capture the desktop, put the prompt on another monitor where possible and confirm the captured area.
- Check the preview or make a private recording. Read through a few lines while observing the outgoing composition. Confirm that neither the scrolling text nor controls appear, then test again after changing scenes or sources.
- Place the text near the lens. Keep the prompt strip narrow and put it directly below or beside the camera lens to limit visible eye movement. Cuefyr specifically recommends a narrow window close to the lens. [c005]
Choose a scroll method that matches your delivery
Fixed-speed scrolling is predictable but can drift out of sync when you pause or ad-lib. Manual controls give you direct control; timed scrolling advances on a schedule; voice-following tools aim to match your pace. Product documentation describes these features, but there is no comparative accuracy or latency testing here.

For Elgato Prompter, the vendor says Voice Sync requires an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or newer on Windows, or Apple M1 or newer on macOS. Confirm your system meets the listed requirement before relying on the feature. [c006]

If a floating window is central to your workflow, verify it in the exact browser and device you plan to use. Floating Teleprompter specifies its always-on-top feature for desktop Chrome and Edge; on phones and other browsers it uses fullscreen instead. [c001]

Script storage and offline use
Floating Teleprompter says scripts stay in local browser storage and that the tool works offline after its initial load. Treat those as vendor statements rather than independently audited privacy guarantees. CloudPrompter says its iOS and Mac apps support offline production. Multi-screen and physical prompts
A phone remote or several synchronized displays can be useful when another person is operating the session. Castrix documents QR-paired screens, a phone remote, and a Bluetooth clicker. If keeping your eyes on the lens is more important than a browser-only setup, Elgato Prompter’s beamsplitter glass and mounting options place a physical display in front of the camera. Common problems and fixes
- The prompt appears in the stream: the scene likely uses display capture or another source that includes the prompt window. Switch to camera or selected-window/game capture, or move the prompt to a separate monitor; verify with a private recording. [c002] [c005]
- The prompt is not floating above other apps: check whether you are using desktop Chrome or Edge if relying on Floating Teleprompter’s always-on-top mode. Its documentation specifies fullscreen on other browsers and phones. [c001]
- Voice-following does not match your pace: confirm the selected microphone matches OBS, then rehearse pauses, ad-libs, and transitions in the actual setup. For Elgato Voice Sync, check the published OS and processor requirement. [c005] [c006]
- Reading looks conspicuous on camera: reduce the width of the prompt and move it close to the lens rather than placing a large block of text across the screen. [c005]
- Remote or second-screen control is awkward: check whether the chosen tool supports the particular remote workflow you need. Castrix documents phone and Bluetooth-clicker control; OBS Teleprompter documents remote viewing on another device. [c003] [c007]
