For occasional dictation, check Apple Dictation first; for recorded audio or video, MacWhisper is a strong candidate; and for configurable local models and mixed live/file workflows, consider Superwhisper. VoiceInk advertises offline processing on its Free tier, but its Pro live-streaming feature uses cloud AI. “Offline” depends on the feature, plan, model, and settings—not just the app’s label.
Which offline speech-to-text app should you choose?

How to check whether dictation is actually offline
Live dictation—speaking into a microphone and having text appear at the cursor—is a different job from importing a recording, editing its transcript, or exporting subtitles. Check the specific workflow you plan to use, rather than assuming that an app’s file-transcription feature and live dictation share the same processing route.
- Check the processing boundary: local speech recognition, cloud transcription, optional cloud-based cleanup, synchronization, and telemetry are separate questions. A local transcript followed by cloud cleanup is a mixed workflow, not an entirely offline pipeline.
- Verify the language: Apple notes that Dictation is not available in all languages or regions and that features vary. Check that the language you need is supported in the current documentation and in the app’s model list. Apple Support
- Match the model to the Mac: Hardware affects which local models are practical. Superwhisper’s vendor materials distinguish Apple Silicon and Intel Mac considerations; do not assume identical speed, model choices, or results across machines. Superwhisper offline models Superwhisper for Mac
- Check output and controls: Cursor insertion, custom vocabulary, timestamps, speaker labels, editing, shortcuts, batch processing, and export formats can matter as much as recognition. - Read the plan boundary: Identify whether the relevant feature is free, subscription-based, or licensed separately, and whether a paid feature calls a cloud service. A local-processing claim for one tier or feature does not establish that the entire app is offline.
How to compare transcription quality fairly
There is no verified head-to-head accuracy result in the reviewed sources, so claims that one of these apps is “most accurate” would be unsupported. If accuracy matters, compare the apps yourself using the same language, microphone, Mac, model size, and recording conditions. Use speech representative of your real work, including technical terms or speaker overlap if those occur in your recordings, and check the output for errors rather than relying on a general accuracy label.
