Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a prerecorded church service streamed to YouTube from OBS, start with H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, and 1080p30 if your recording, computer, and sustained upload can support it. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 8 Mbps for 720p30; leave about 20% upload headroom and test before the service. These are starting points, not a universal preset: the right profile depends on your source file, equipment, and connection.
“Continuously” can mean one scheduled service or an unattended 24/7 channel. OBS is a practical do-it-yourself option for a planned event; keeping a channel running around the clock is a separate uptime problem. The guide below covers the event workflow and its limits, then an option for running the uploaded recording from the cloud.
Recommended OBS settings for a prerecorded service
| OBS setting | Starting point | When to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Service and protocol | YouTube; use RTMPS if your OBS workflow supports it | Use the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but choose them only if your OBS setup, computer, and intended workflow support them reliably. |
| Rate control | CBR | This is YouTube’s specified rate control for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Output resolution and frame rate | 1080p30, if supported; otherwise consider 720p30 | Match the source and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain. Lower resolution may be preferable to an unstable stream. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps | YouTube recommends AAC or MP3; listen to the preview and check speech clarity and levels. |
| Color | Rec. 709 for SDR | Do not enable HDR unless the entire workflow supports it. |
| Local recording | Optional separate recording output, using MKV | Separate recording settings can add system load. Test before relying on them. |
YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate figures are 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for 1080p30, and 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum for 720p30. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom, so the connection needs capacity beyond the selected stream bitrate, not merely a result that reaches it during a brief speed test. These are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your church’s actual connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
Choose a profile that fits the recording and connection
Use 1080p30 only when the source recording, encoder, and sustained upload support it. If the upload is constrained or the stream health is unstable, try 720p30 and its lower bitrate recommendation, then test the result. A fixed pulpit shot may demand less from the encoder than footage with movement, but slides, fine text, and source detail also affect what viewers see. Compare the actual preview and recording rather than choosing a resolution by habit. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps; there is no reason to raise frame rate if the source does not benefit from it. OBS Studio overview.

Prepare the YouTube event and OBS program
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Open the event in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s YouTube streaming setup. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send video to your channel. Do not share it publicly.
- Load the recording into the program feed. Add the recorded service as a media source or prepare the complete program feed in OBS. Confirm that its embedded audio is audible in the OBS audio mixer, and check that unintended desktop or microphone audio is not mixed in. If you need a repeated playlist or unattended looping, test the exact behavior in your OBS setup before relying on it; the event workflow and encoder settings alone do not establish a dependable 24/7 operating recipe.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled start. Start streaming in OBS with enough lead time to see the incoming signal in YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect both audio and video in the preview before starting the event. Follow the event’s selected auto-start and auto-stop behavior in YouTube live settings; do not assume the event will start or stop in the way you intend. YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Keep the computer and connection stable. Monitor stream health and the preview during the service. A wired Ethernet connection is an option when the computer can connect to the router, but it cannot remedy every network fault. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- End the event and verify any local recording. End the event in YouTube and stop the encoder in the sequence appropriate to its event controls. Check the local file if you recorded one. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer continuous session will appear as one complete archive.
Test before the service
A short test is more useful when it resembles the actual program. Include speech, music, motion, and slides if they occur in the service, and use the intended resolution, bitrate, and audio path. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and that the preview looks and sounds right before scheduling a real event.
- Check that OBS is using the intended YouTube event, stream URL, and key.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health while the test runs.
- Listen for clear speech, appropriate music level, and unintended audio sources.
- Confirm the upload remains stable at the planned bitrate with headroom, rather than judging by a momentary speed-test result.
- If you will record locally at the same time, test both outputs together for dropped frames or other performance problems.
Protect a local archive without overloading the stream
OBS Advanced output can use independent streaming and recording configurations. If you want a local safety copy, MKV is a sensible recording container: OBS recommends it because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file. If you need MP4 afterward, OBS can remux the recording. A separate high-quality recording can use additional system resources, so test it alongside streaming. OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.

Lossless recording is usually excessive for an ordinary service archive: OBS lists its lossless recording preset at around 7 GB per minute. That is an OBS Project figure from its recording-preset guidance, not a predicted file size for every recording setting. OBS recording encoder presets.
Set viewer controls separately from encoder quality
DVR is a YouTube live setting, not an OBS bitrate or resolution control. When enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. Decide whether that behavior suits the service and configure it in YouTube’s live settings. YouTube live settings.

One service versus a 24/7 channel
One scheduled service
For a single prerecorded service, create a scheduled YouTube event, feed the recording through OBS, preview it, and monitor the stream until the event ends. The OBS profile helps set video and audio quality, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection still have to keep sending the feed.
Unattended continuous streaming
A stream intended to run around the clock has different requirements: the source must continue or repeat as intended, and the computer and connection must remain available. A single OBS setting does not guarantee unattended uptime. YouTube’s guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so clarify whether you need one event, repeated programming, or uninterrupted archive continuity before choosing an approach.

For copyright, use recordings and music you have the rights to stream on YouTube; a recording being appropriate for an in-person service does not itself establish permission for an online broadcast. Check the rights for music, performances, and other third-party material before scheduling the event. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help organize that review.

- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS is using the URL and key for the intended event, and confirm the event is set up in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The preview buffers or stream health is poor: The connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Lower the output resolution or bitrate, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test again on the same connection you will use for the service.
- Video looks soft or text is hard to read: Check the recording’s original resolution and detail before increasing OBS output resolution; upscaling cannot restore detail that is not present in the source. Test slides and text in the YouTube preview.
- Speech is quiet, distorted, or missing: Check the OBS audio mixer and the selected source, then listen to the YouTube preview. Make sure the recording audio is included and that an unintended microphone or desktop source is not competing with it.
- OBS struggles when streaming and recording: Test streaming alone and then with local recording enabled. Reduce unnecessary recording quality or output load if the combined setup is unstable.
- The stream ends or the archive is incomplete: Check the YouTube event’s start/stop controls and the encoder connection. A session longer than 12 hours is outside YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window for a single complete archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded recordings to keep playing without a home computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera.
