For a typical lecture with slides and speech, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 14 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS. In OBS, use a looping Media Source for one lecture file or VLC Video with Loop Playlist for a sequence. These are starting settings, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: match the bitrate to stable upload capacity, test the full setup, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Recommended starting settings for a lecture

OBS setting Starting value How to choose
Stream protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoding.
Video encoder H.264 A broadly compatible baseline; YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live streaming.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding.
Output resolution and frame rate 1920×1080 at 30 fps Use the source’s appropriate resolution and frame rate. For mostly static slides, 30 fps is an efficiency-oriented starting choice, not a YouTube requirement.
Video bitrate 14 Mbps YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps. Use a lower setting if your connection cannot sustain it.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube’s recommended stereo settings for RTMP/RTMPS.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams to make multiple output formats available. That does not remove the need to send a stable stream at the settings you select. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Choose the output quality your connection can sustain

The following are YouTube’s current H.264 recommended video bitrates, not measurements or guarantees of connection performance. Use the recommendation that matches the output resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s official guidance also covers other resolutions and minimums.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps

If 1080p30 at 14 Mbps produces dropped frames, try 720p30 at 8 Mbps, or reduce further until the connection is stable. OBS identifies dropped frames as a possible sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; a single speed test does not establish that upload capacity will remain stable continuously. Check YouTube’s current encoder bitrate table if you choose another resolution, frame rate, or codec.

Keep the source active

A Media Source can be configured to restart when it becomes active. In a continuous setup, avoid unnecessary scene switching: if a source is hidden or made inactive, playback behavior depends on its source settings. Check playback and sound in the Audio Mixer before leaving the stream unattended; OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains how to use the mixer meters to verify audio.

Configure OBS output and encoding

  1. Set output size: use OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution for the actual size sent to YouTube. Match it to the lecture and the bitrate you can sustain.
  2. Set frame rate: choose 30 or 60 fps according to the source and content. Sixty fps can be more taxing than 30 fps; it is not automatically better for slides.
  3. Set video encoding: choose H.264, CBR, the YouTube-recommended bitrate for your output, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
  4. Set audio encoding: for a normal stereo lecture, use AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube also lists MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For 5.1 audio it lists AAC at 384 kbps and 48 kHz; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
  5. Choose an encoder your system can handle: OBS says hardware encoders generally shift encoding work away from the CPU, but quality and compatibility vary by hardware generation and platform. Do not assume a hardware or software encoder is best on every computer.

Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard for an initial fit to your hardware and network, then test with the actual lecture and scene. The wizard considers hardware resources and network conditions, but meeting OBS’s system requirements alone does not guarantee that a particular encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene will run reliably. Read OBS’s Overview Guide, Quick Start Guide, System Requirements, and Hardware Encoding guide.

Test for 24/7 operation before relying on it

  1. Run the complete setup with representative lecture content, including audio and the file or playlist transitions.
  2. Watch OBS for dropped frames and other connection problems while the test runs.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm the stream is arriving as expected.
  4. Enable OBS Automatic Reconnect in Advanced settings so OBS can attempt to reconnect after a connection interruption.
  5. Test the setup for an extended period. Reconnect helps with some interruptions, but does not guarantee the computer, media playback, network, or YouTube service will remain available continuously.

OBS recommends testing and its connection troubleshooting guide explains dropped frames and bitrate adjustments. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its live encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common lecture-stream problems

  • Dropped frames: the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Lower the bitrate, consider a lower output such as 720p30 at 8 Mbps, and test again while watching OBS and YouTube stream health.
  • VLC Video is missing: install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • The lecture does not repeat: check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
  • Playback stops after a scene change: check whether the source has become inactive or hidden and review its restart and source behavior settings. Avoid unnecessary scene switching in a continuous broadcast.
  • Viewers cannot hear the lecture: verify the audio is present in the source, check the Audio Mixer meters, and listen to a test stream. Use a supported audio codec and suitable sample rate.
  • Reconnect does not restore the stream: Automatic Reconnect is an attempt, not an uptime guarantee. Check the computer, source playback, connection to the ingest server, and YouTube stream status.

Or let it run in the cloud

If keeping a computer, OBS, and a stable home connection running around the clock is the hard part, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files, not a live camera feed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can OBS stream a playlist of prerecorded lectures continuously?

Yes. Use a VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Should a lecture stream use 30 fps or 60 fps?

Use the frame rate suited to the lecture source and content. Thirty fps is a reasonable efficiency-oriented starting point for mostly static slides; 60 fps can require more resources.

Does enabling Automatic Reconnect guarantee a 24/7 stream?

No. It helps OBS attempt to recover from a connection interruption, but cannot guarantee continuous operation of the computer, playback, network, or YouTube.
