For a low-motion nature ambience stream, start with 1920×1080 output at 30 fps. Set your video bitrate to satisfy both your streaming service’s current limit and your connection’s stable upload capacity, and use that service’s required encoder and keyframe interval. In OBS, enable Automatic Reconnect and test the complete setup before leaving it unattended. These are starting points—not a universal preset—because the right settings depend on your source, computer, network, and streaming destination.
Recommended starting settings

OBS distinguishes the canvas used to arrange sources from the output resolution sent to the stream, and notes that 60-fps streaming can be more demanding than 30 fps. The recommendation to begin at 30 fps for a relatively static ambience scene applies that workload guidance to this kind of content; OBS does not define a special nature-stream preset. Set resolution and frame rate
Choose the canvas and output resolution
In OBS, open Settings > Video. For a full-frame 1080p video source, set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 1920×1080 and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 if you want to send Full HD. The canvas controls how sources are laid out; the output controls the resolution of the encoded stream. If your source or layout differs, arrange the canvas for the scene and make sure the output matches your intended stream and destination capabilities.
Start at 30 fps
In the same Video settings, begin at Common FPS Values: 30. A static forest, aquarium, rain, or other slow-moving scene may not benefit from 60 fps enough to justify its extra system load. Try 60 fps only when the source has motion where smoother movement matters, the service accepts it, and your computer can encode it reliably. Compare the actual result and OBS performance rather than assuming a higher frame rate is better.

Choose an encoder and bitrate for your service
Check the destination before entering values
Open Settings > Output in OBS. Select an encoder that your destination accepts and your hardware can sustain. Depending on the computer, the menu may offer x264 or a hardware encoder such as QuickSync, NVENC, or AMD VCE. Performance varies by hardware and workload, so test your available options rather than relying on a universal “best” encoder claim.
Use the service’s current bitrate, codec, and rate-control instructions. For example, Cloudflare’s OBS walkthrough specifies CBR for its Cloudflare Stream setup; that is service-specific advice, not a rule for every destination. Cloudflare’s standard setup also recommends a 4-second keyframe interval, with different guidance for its low-latency mode. See Cloudflare’s First Live Stream with OBS.

Set a bitrate with upload headroom
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed and also staying within the streaming service’s bitrate limit. The speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained capacity: use a stable connection and leave room for other devices and changing network conditions. OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate if frames are dropping. Its connection guidance is dated 2024-09-30: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
For x264 at 1920×1080 and 30 fps, OBS’s x264 guide lists 5,000–8,000 kbps as a starting reference for the veryfast preset and low-to-medium motion. The same guide notes that low-motion content can need less bitrate and advises testing against the computer, network, and destination. Treat the range as context, not as a required or guaranteed optimum for your stream: OBS Streaming with x264.

Match keyframes and audio to the destination
Find the current keyframe interval required by your streaming service and enter it in OBS’s Output settings. Cloudflare’s documentation illustrates why this check matters: its standard live setup recommends 4 seconds, while its low-latency instructions differ. For Cloudflare Stream troubleshooting, its guidance gives a fixed interval in its own 2–8 second range; those values should not be transferred to another service without checking that service’s instructions. OBS’s overview guide describes around 160 kbps as a typical streaming audio bitrate, or less when upload capacity is limited. For a nature stream, set audio quality to suit the recording and service; speech is not required just to justify a higher audio setting. The destination’s accepted audio settings take precedence.

Make a 24/7 setup more resilient
- Prefer Ethernet when practical. OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A cable is optional; the benefit depends on your network and setup, and it does not guarantee uptime.
- Enable Automatic Reconnect. In OBS, open Settings > Advanced, find the Network section, and enable Automatically Reconnect. This can help OBS reconnect after a drop, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Stay within the service’s limit and choose a bitrate supported by stable upload capacity. OBS also suggests trying another ingest server if frames are dropping.
- Consider Dynamic Bitrate as a trade-off. OBS says it can reduce dropped frames by lowering stream quality when the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. It does not fix the underlying network problem.
- Test the real scene and full stream path. Before leaving the stream unattended, check the source video, sound, bitrate stability, dropped frames, and CPU/GPU load on the intended computer. OBS recommends checking scene and stream performance before a first live stream; do not assume a brief preview proves a continuous stream will remain stable. See OBS Streaming Getting Started.
If you stream through Cloudflare Stream, its troubleshooting page points to service-specific keyframe and upload-to-duration metrics for diagnosing freezing or buffering. Those metrics apply to Cloudflare Stream, not to every streaming platform.

Copyright and YouTube considerations
OBS settings do not establish that a video is cleared for public streaming. Before using a nature recording, confirm that you have permission for the footage and any music or ambient audio it contains. A video that is licensed for personal viewing is not automatically licensed for a monetized or continuous public stream. Review YouTube’s current policies and the terms of any footage or music license before going live; do not assume that looping a recording makes it original or exempt from copyright rules.
