For a mostly static lecture, start with OBS at 1920×1080, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously, then test and monitor stream health.

Recommended OBS settings for a 24/7 1080p lecture stream

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Output resolution 1920×1080 Matches the target 1080p stream. Use a canvas that suits your source and layout; scale to 1080p when needed.
Frame rate 30 fps A sensible baseline for a lecture with little motion. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps.
Video codec H.264 A broadly compatible baseline for YouTube Live.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate for the live encode.
Video bitrate 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube for H.264 1080p30 These are YouTube’s current ingestion recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. The recommended figure does not guarantee a stable connection or playback for every viewer.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz stereo; 128 Kbps stereo These are YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS audio parameters. Aim for a clear, continuously present lecture voice.
Connection protocol RTMPS where supported Use the secure ingest option when available in your stream setup.

For SDR, YouTube’s recommended advanced video parameters include progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit video, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. In OBS, the exact names and availability of encoder controls can vary by encoder and version, so set the parameters that your selected encoder exposes.

Set up OBS and YouTube in a deliberate order

  1. Build the scene. In OBS, add the lecture source—such as a video, slides, or a capture source—and arrange it on a canvas that matches your content. Avoid unnecessary scaling; if the canvas and source differ, scale the output to 1920×1080.
  2. Configure the video output. Set the output resolution to 1920×1080 and frame rate to 30 fps. This is a baseline for a mostly static lecture, not a requirement for every source.
  3. Choose the encoder and rate control. Select H.264, set rate control to CBR, and enter a bitrate supported by your sustained upload capacity. YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 1080p30. Test at the chosen value rather than assuming the maximum recommendation will be stable on your connection.
  4. Set keyframes and compatible video parameters. Use a 2-second keyframe interval, staying at or below YouTube’s 4-second maximum. For SDR, use progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, and 8-bit output where available; the listed YouTube advanced parameters also include two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  5. Configure and listen to audio. Choose AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 Kbps stereo. Listen to a representative segment for intelligibility, consistent level, and unwanted room or microphone noise; suitable filters depend on the microphone and room.
  6. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s live streaming setup, use the stream key for the intended broadcast and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a screen share or publish it. Use RTMPS when supported.
  7. Test before relying on it. Run a private or unlisted test with representative lecture audio and motion. Check OBS for encoding or connection problems and review YouTube’s stream health and messages before making the stream public.
  8. Save a tested configuration. OBS profiles can keep a tested set of stream and output settings separate from other configurations. Use a distinct profile for this YouTube setup so a later change for another production does not silently alter the settings you have verified.

Choose an encoder your computer can sustain

OBS says hardware encoding can offload work from the CPU and is generally recommended for performance when supported. The trade-off is that older-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. There is no universally best encoder or preset without knowing your computer and testing it under sustained load.

  • Try a supported hardware encoder if the CPU is under pressure, then check the resulting image quality at your selected bitrate.
  • Use a software encoder only if the computer can encode continuously without missed frames or instability; CPU capacity and competing workloads matter over a 24/7 run.
  • Judge the configuration by a sustained test on the actual machine, not by a short preview. A stable stream depends on encoder load and the upload connection, not just on matching a setting table.

Plan for internet interruptions and long runtimes

Enable OBS automatic reconnect and test what happens after a brief network interruption. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health and messages. Official guidance reviewed for this article does not establish universal reconnect retry values for a 24/7 production, so verify recovery behavior with your own setup rather than relying on a presumed default.

A stream’s bitrate must be sustainable on the upload connection for the entire broadcast. If the connection cannot reliably hold your chosen rate, lower it and test again. YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and connection qualities, but that does not remove the need for a stable feed into YouTube.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?

Do not rely on YouTube to archive one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need YouTube archives, break the broadcast into shorter events; if you need a dependable copy, make a separate local recording.

For local recording, OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop does not corrupt the entire file. Account for the storage required and ensure the recording process itself can keep running. A separate recording needs its own disk space and operational plan; it is not a substitute for monitoring the live stream.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream health reports connection trouble: The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Test a lower sustained bitrate and check the connection during a representative long run.
  • OBS struggles to encode: The selected encoder or its settings may exceed the computer’s capacity. Test a supported hardware encoder to reduce CPU load, or reduce the encoding burden and verify image quality and stability.
  • Picture looks soft or blocky: Check that the output is actually 1920×1080, that the bitrate is suitable for the content and connection, and that scaling has not unnecessarily degraded the source. YouTube’s 14 Mbps figure is a recommendation for H.264 1080p30, not a guarantee of a particular visual result.
  • Audio is missing or inconsistent: Confirm the intended source is active in OBS, then check levels and listen to a test recording or private stream. Keep the lecture voice present throughout the program.
  • Stream does not recover after a drop: Confirm automatic reconnect is enabled and test a controlled interruption before depending on it. Check OBS and YouTube’s status messages rather than assuming a fixed retry policy.
  • No full YouTube archive appears: An uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter broadcast events for YouTube archiving and a separate local recording for preservation.

Copyright and lecture content checks

Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights or permissions needed for the lecture materials, including any music, video clips, images, and third-party recordings. A lecture format does not itself establish permission to retransmit copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s applicable policies and use material you are authorized to stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube channel to continue while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. The basic setup is:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from its cloud service.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
