For a 4K 60fps SDR YouTube Live stream, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265. For a resilient local recording, capture to MKV and remux to MP4 if your editor or upload workflow needs it. The right codec and whether your computer can stream and record at once depend on its encoder and workload, so test the full setup before going live.

Recommended OBS settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

These settings target SDR video. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewers and automatically detects encoder settings by default; the figures below are its recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer can sustain them.

OBS setting Recommended value Practical note
Output resolution and frame rate 3840×2160 at 60 fps Use the 4K/2160p 60fps output you intend viewers to receive.
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate for the live output.
Video codec and bitrate H.264: 50 Mbps recommended; AV1 or H.265: 35 Mbps recommended Use the codec available through your selected OBS encoder. YouTube’s table also lists minimum settings of 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K60; treat these as minimums, not recommended targets.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo; 44.1 kHz for stereo YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists these options and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. For 5.1, its guidance is 384 Kbps at 48 kHz, and RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC.
Advanced video settings Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC These are YouTube’s recommendations. Apply them only where the encoder selected in OBS exposes compatible controls.
Color for SDR Rec. 709, 8-bit HDR requires different settings; see below.

For the live encoder, choose settings under OBS’s Output options in Advanced Output mode, then configure the stream encoder’s rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval, and codec where those controls are exposed. Exact field names and availability vary by encoder, operating system, and OBS version.

YouTube’s official recommendations are on its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page. Its recommended bitrate is not an estimate of your internet plan’s speed or a promise of performance. Check upload capacity under the conditions you will stream in, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event.

Choose the recording format and encoder separately

Container: MKV for resilience, MP4 when your workflow needs it

MKV is a good default when protecting a local capture matters. OBS says an MKV recording will not corrupt the entire file if recording does not stop gracefully. If an editor or platform needs MP4, use OBS’s remux function to convert the recording container without recording the stream again. OBS also notes that fragmented MP4/MOV can suit workflows that need direct upload or editing, so the choice is between resilience and compatibility with the tools you use—not a rule that every recording must be MKV.

OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide explains its recording formats and remux workflow.

Codec: balance file size, quality, and editing support

OBS’s formats guide gives a general quality/file-size direction of AV1, then HEVC, then H.264 for available hardware encoder choices. That is not a guarantee for every encoder or a substitute for checking whether your editor supports the resulting file. OBS notes that AV1 is not yet well supported in editing software. H.264 is a practical compatibility fallback; HEVC can be appropriate if both your encoder and editing workflow support it.

Codec availability depends on your platform and encoder. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide describes format considerations, while its Hardware Encoding guide explains that hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Neither guide establishes whether an unspecified computer can sustain simultaneous 4K60 streaming and recording.

Recording quality presets and encoder choice

In OBS’s Advanced Output settings, choose a recording encoder and quality separately when you want a local file with different settings from the live stream. A separate encoder can preserve a higher-quality recording, but it uses extra resources; test it with the stream running.

  • Same as stream: Reuses the stream settings. OBS says this mode does not allow pausing recordings.
  • High Quality: Aims for high quality with medium file size.
  • Indistinguishable: Produces higher quality with larger files and may affect older or weaker systems.
  • Lossless: Not a routine choice for 4K60. OBS reports about 7 GB per minute and says this preset uses the CPU encoder.

Hardware encoders are generally recommended by OBS for performance because encoding work is handled by a specialized GPU component rather than the CPU. The codec and modes available still depend on the system’s platform, hardware, and encoder. Read OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide before selecting a preset whose file size or resource demands matter to your workflow.

Use different settings for HDR

The settings above are for SDR. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and 10-bit video; it does not support AV1 for HDR. YouTube also says 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency: low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K.

Confirm that the selected OBS encoder exposes compatible HDR controls before configuring the stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers the platform’s recommended settings.

Test the complete stream-and-record workload

  1. Set the stream output: In OBS, configure 3840×2160 at 60 fps and the recommended live codec, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframe interval. Set the ingest to RTMPS where available.
  2. Set up local recording: Choose MKV if resilience is the priority. If you need a different codec or quality from the stream, configure the recording encoder separately in Advanced Output.
  3. Run a representative test: Stream and record at the same time, using movement and audio like the actual broadcast. This reveals whether the computer and connection sustain the real workload; a still or short, simple test may not.
  4. Check upload capacity and stream health: Test under conditions similar to the event and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube advises testing before going live but does not establish one universal upload-speed multiplier.
  5. Inspect the recording: Check that the file plays and that picture and audio are acceptable. If your workflow requires MP4, remux the MKV in OBS and verify the resulting file in your editor.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely issue What to check or change
YouTube reports unstable stream health or the stream drops frames The connection or encoder may not sustain the selected live bitrate. Test upload capacity under event-like conditions, verify the stream bitrate and encoder, and monitor stream health. Do not assume a nominal internet-plan speed guarantees a stable 4K60 upload.
The stream works, but the local recording stutters or performance degrades A separate recording encoder adds resource demand. Test stream and recording together. Try a less demanding recording quality preset or use the same encoder settings as the stream if a separate high-quality file is not essential.
The recording is much larger than expected The selected recording preset or codec may produce large files; Lossless is especially demanding in storage. Use High Quality or Indistinguishable only if their file-size and performance tradeoffs fit your workflow. OBS reports about 7 GB per minute for Lossless.
Your editor will not open the recording The editor may not support the chosen container or codec. Remux MKV to MP4 in OBS if the issue is the container. If the codec is unsupported, select a codec your editor accepts for a future recording; remuxing does not change the video codec.
HDR does not appear correctly The encoder or output may not match YouTube’s HDR guidance. Check for H.265 over RTMP(S) and 10-bit output. AV1 is not supported for HDR on YouTube.

Or let it run in the cloud

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pause a recording if it uses the same settings as the stream?

No. OBS says the “Same as stream” recording mode does not allow pausing.

Will remuxing an MKV to MP4 change its codec or improve quality?

No. Remuxing changes the container, not the encoded video or its quality.
