There is no single best OBS preset for every YouTube Live stream. Choose the resolution, frame rate and codec your computer can encode while your internet connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended video bitrate. A dependable starting point is CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, SDR Rec. 709 at 8-bit, and a test stream before you go live.
Start with resolution and frame rate
Set the stream’s output resolution and frame rate before tuning bitrate. Higher output demands more from both the encoder and upload connection. Use the target you need only if your system and network can sustain it; if performance is unstable, reduce frame rate or output resolution.
- 1080p60: A useful target for motion-heavy content when the computer and upload connection can handle it.
- 1080p30: A lower-demand option for talk, tutorials, and other content that does not need 60 fps.
- 1440p or 4K: Choose these when the extra detail matters and you can provide the higher bitrate shown below. YouTube says 4K/2160p live streams do not offer its low-latency optimization option.
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the area used to arrange sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to YouTube. Select the intended common FPS there as well. These distinctions are described in the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
If 60 fps is not working, OBS recommends trying 30 fps. A lower frame rate or output resolution can ease rendering, encoding, and network demands, but will reduce motion smoothness or image detail.

Choose an encoder and codec your setup supports
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Which options appear in OBS depends on your operating system, hardware, drivers, and OBS build. Do not assume every computer offers every codec.
OBS notes that hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but available capabilities and quality vary by system and encoder generation. Software encoding with x264 and hardware encoders have different trade-offs; test the actual computer and scene rather than assuming one is always better. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.

Set rate control, keyframes, and video bitrate
In Settings → Output, choose Advanced output mode if you need independent stream and recording controls. Under the streaming output settings, select CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and enter a bitrate based on the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Exact labels can differ by OBS version and encoder. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
The following are YouTube’s recommended video ingestion bitrates, in Mbps, on its official encoder-settings page accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not a promise that your connection can hold the bitrate or a statement of hard minimums.

| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1 or H.265/HEVC; for 1080p30, its recommendations are 14 Mbps and 10 Mbps respectively. If your upload cannot sustainably carry the relevant recommended rate, lower bitrate and, if needed, output resolution or frame rate. A speed-test peak does not establish sustained capacity, especially on a shared or variable connection.
Set audio and color for the intended workflow
YouTube lists 128 kbps for stereo audio. Select the intended microphone and desktop-audio mix in OBS, check that levels do not clip, and verify synchronization in a test. The platform-specific 128 kbps figure is a baseline, not a universal mixer configuration.

Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
For a standard SDR stream, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit color, which YouTube lists for SDR. HDR needs a deliberate, compatible workflow: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in its cited settings. Treat HDR as a separate configuration rather than a general quality switch. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test the stream before the event
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast using the intended OBS scene and output settings.
- Include sound and video movement similar to the actual stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement like those planned for the live event.
- Check audio level and sync, motion quality, the intended output resolution, OBS performance indicators, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Let the test run long enough to reveal instability under realistic conditions; a brief speed test or static scene cannot confirm sustained performance.
- Change settings in response to the observed problem, then repeat the test.
Monitor stream health and messages during the actual event too. YouTube’s recommendations and testing guidance are on its official live encoder settings page.

Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding lag | The encoder cannot keep up with the chosen workload. | Try a lighter encoder preset or an available hardware encoder, then reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Hardware options vary by computer. |
| OBS reports rendering lag or GPU overload | Scene compositing or another GPU workload is competing with OBS. | Simplify demanding scenes and reduce output demands. A game using the GPU can compete with OBS rendering. |
| Dropped frames or unstable ingest | The upload path may not sustain the selected bitrate. | Check available upload capacity and connection stability, then choose a sustainable bitrate. A CPU or encoder adjustment alone will not fix a network problem. |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Viewer networks or devices and delivery behavior may be involved. | Consider lowering bitrate or output demands if wider accessibility is the priority. YouTube transcodes live streams, but that does not guarantee every viewer can receive a high-bitrate rendition smoothly. |
| The stream appears limited to a lower resolution | Source output settings or YouTube processing/transcoding may explain the display. | Confirm OBS is sending the intended output and inspect stream health and ingest messages. Do not assume a fixed propagation delay. |
OBS’s guidance distinguishes encoding performance trouble from stream buffering and dropped-frame issues. See its encoding performance troubleshooting and stream buffering troubleshooting pages.
Save separate profiles for different conditions
If you alternate between a high-quality setup and a more conservative one, save separate OBS profiles rather than repeatedly changing values by hand. Profiles store stream, video, and output settings, making it easier to choose a setup appropriate to the current computer, network, or event. OBS explains profile management in its Profiles guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded recordings 24/7, OBS is not the only option. StreamNeo runs those videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
